LIFESTYLE LETTER
We’re Getting Growing Happy Spring Edina! Hopefully, you were able to escape the frigid weather to some of our wellknown snow birding or spring breaking spots like Naples or Cabo. Fingers crossed it will be blue skies and warmer temps from here on out. Personally, I’m excited to get back out on the golf course and visit some fun patios this month. If you did not get a chance to travel yet, read about our giveaway trip to Denver, which could be a quick and easy destination any time of the year. If you’re looking for a mini, local escape this summer, we spoke with Paradise Charter Cruises and learned about the opportunities they offer to get out on the water while still remaining close to home. Their fleet covers Lake Minnetonka and the Mississippi River, providing fun cruises for sight-seeing, happy hours, school field trips, or outings like the “Fiesta” cruise or the “Cheeseburger in Paradise” cruise for those who desire a different, yet unique dining experience. Spring is still a great time to continue refining your home improvement list, so we share Ring Construction’s story and how Joe Ring’s remodeling philosophy is helping to refresh and restore the beautiful homes in our community. Hirshfield’s also provides some tips and trends for the 2022 season. Sometimes all you need is a fresh can of paint to transform a space for the better. Finally, we spoke with Dr. Susan of SuNu Wellness. She and her team are hyper focused on holistic wellness from nutrition to acupuncture, massage, and so much more. After coming out of the last two years, we could all use a little more kindness and self-care. This month marks our second issue of Edina Lifestyle, and our team could not have been more excited by the positive feedback from readership and partners. Many thanks to everyone involved in making this happen. We’re excited to continue to grow and bring you the best. Enjoy the issue,

RING CONSTRUCTION FOCUSES ON THE FINE DETAILS

A pride of the Twin Cities has always been its beautiful houses. The original trim, antique woodwork, and character of older houses are a selling point for those looking for homes in the city. But when it comes to remodeling, updating, or upgrading them, older houses pose unique challenges for homeowners. That’s where Joe Ring, the owner of Ring Construction comes in. Joe has been constructing, remodeling, and adding to houses in the Edina and South Minneapolis area for a decade with a specific focus on those fine details of older homes during remodels and additions. And it is that knowledge of houses sometimes more than a century old that has served Joe well since Ring Construction opened its doors. After a brief stint in culinary school, Joe got into real estate early: “I got my real estate license at 18.” Says Joe. And less than a year later, he began working with an investor renovating properties and had already gotten his general contractor’s license. By working in real estate, Joe quickly realized construction was his passion. “I liked the build process more. In construction there are so many factors and it’s just a lot more fun to see something come together.” Says Joe. And two years after getting his general contractor’s license, Joe “Started a company with a friend of the business for 6 years: Wilson and Ring” says Joe. And it was that first experience with construction in the Twin Cities area that led to Joe starting his own company in 2020 calling it Ring Construction. Joe’s experience in real estate still guides Ring Construction. Joe remains a fully licensed real estate agent even though he doesn’t sell houses anymore: “Its good to just have both aspects” says Joe. His continued knowledge of real estate remains, “A useful tool to access the MLS, being able to assess how much clients should be putting into a house, and being able to look at the market as a whole and help them make that decision.” On top of that understanding, Joe maintains contacts in real estate so that “If a client is looking for a new property, I can refer them to somebody I trust that will be able to help them.” And when a client chooses an older home, Joe has an experienced team. “There’s a lot of factors that go into older homes, and you need a lot of experience with those to make sure that you aren’t running into issues during the project. And we have a lot of experience with that. That’s basically all we’ve done the 10 years we’ve been in business,” says Joe. Factors like the plumbing, framing, electrical, to even the use of drywall instead of plaster can be difficult to renovate or work around, especially if these were installed close to one-hundred years ago. Therefore, finding talented crews who understand these difficulties and can work with and around them, is important. When it comes to the details of trim and stain, some clients don’t want to disrupt the antique character of older homes. Joe takes his craft and craftsmen seriously. The woodworking skills and construction techniques used in older homes are,

“Getting harder to find, but we work to recreate the look that’s needed” says Joe. Both his cabinet and carpentry crews work at “Recreating the old trim and trim profiles and cabinet details that you would find in a home 100 years ago,” as well as flooring crews that “Can feather in existing wood floors and do a really good job stain matching to keep everything synced up and looking really nice.” It is because of these craftsmen and experience that Joe can do the work that “fits the home” and not disrupt its character, while at the same time offering modern conveniences. Despite the rising costs of lumber, metal, and electrical wiring, business has been growing. Because of the pandemic, “People started to spend quite a bit of time at home. They sort of realized

they needed to get that remodel done,” says Joe. Recent supply chain issues have also been challenging. Joe cites the doubling or even tripling of window lead times as an example. That pickup in remodeling, however, helps people “Get exactly what they want,” from their homes instead of moving. Ring’s recent project where the homeowners added an addition to double the existing size of the home allowed them to be extremely specific about their wants and needs. Ring’s talent and extensive knowledge of remodeling helped these home owners get exactly what they wanted out of their existing space. This has, and always will be the passion and goal. Paradise Charter Cruises Scenic Boat Tours on Lake Minnetonka and The Mississippi River ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PARADISE CHARTER CRUISES
Paradise Charter Cruises offers everything you need to take to the water in high style this summer. Their four award-winning vessels treat over 50,000 passengers each year to breathtaking voyages across Lake Minnetonka and down the Mississippi River. “I’ve always had a passion for making people happy,” said Dave Lawrence, who founded Paradise Charter Cruises in 1985. “And when those people are lucky enough to live in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there’s no better way to do that than by taking them out on the water.” Paradise is now celebrating their 37th summer afloat Lake Minnetonka, where they depart from the

scenic downtown ports of Excelsior and Wayzata. The Paradise Grand and the Paradise Princess II, both 57-foot yachts, each accommodate 10 to 50 passengers, while the stately 70-foot Paradise Destiny II will take 40 to 100. Lake Minnetonka is the ideal destination for a summertime escape. Passengers admire the natural beauty and crystal pure water which shimmers beneath a cornflower blue sky, and perhaps wish they could own one of the picturesque mansions dotting the shoreline. waters of Lake Minnetonka.” But spending a day gliding around it on a luxury yacht is just as revitalizing! Paradise christened the Minneapolis Queen in 2004. The modern 80-foot paddleboat departs from Bohemian Flats Park in Downtown Minneapolis to take 40 to 125 passengers up and down the great old river. Guests enjoy stunning views of St. Anthony Falls, the historic Stone Arch Bridge and the legendary river bluffs, each made only more gorgeous by the backdrop of Minneapolis’ aspiring towers. Paradise offers regular cruises on Lake Minnetonka and the Mississippi River almost daily from Mother’s Day through the third weekend of October. Their Happy Hour & Pizza Cruises, which make the cruising experience even greater by combining it with the two finest substances known to man, are available on both bodies of water, as is Margarita Monday. And if you are looking for the perfect date or a family outing everyone will cherish, you need only book a table during one of the Friday Night Dinner or Sunday Brunch cruises. The yachts of Paradise Charter Cruises and the Minneapolis Queen are also available for private parties. The spacious and elegantly furnished ships set the ideal stage for corporate events, client appreciation parties, and team building outings. Paradise has helped many companies hold staff reunions in a COVID-safe environment throughout the pandemic. Paradise Charter Cruises also provides the venues for Minnesota’s most memorable anniversaries, birthdays, sweet sixteens, bar and bat mitzvahs, baby showers and family reunions, and there is perhaps no better way to celebrate a wedding. “People tell us over and over again: Paradise weddings are the most beautiful they have ever been invited to,” said Dave. “Whether you want to treat your guests to a scenic rehearsal dinner, have your ceremony on the shore and then board the ship to

HEALING COLORS 2022 COLOR TRENDS FROM BENJAMIN MOORE & HIRSHFIELD’S
20
T R E N D SE T T E R | HOM E + DE S I GN
We are immersed in color! It’s so much a part of us that we may not even notice its (omni) presence, but the impact color has on us and our interaction with it is a significant part of our lives. Color trends bubble up as an awareness or statement of our mood, current needs and our ever-changing environments. We surround ourselves with colors that help us navigate the latest shifts. Currently we’re turning to greens, terra-cottas, muted color-washed tones, hopeful hues and statement tones that reflect our personality; they’re colors we’re making priorities in our homes for a variety of reasons relating in large part to what’s happening in our world.
All things green is a strong trend currently and various shades of it have been chosen as the 2022 Color of the Year by several paint companies, including Benjamin Moore. Green reflects our desire for calming nature, renewal and growth, and the healing that comes from the way green can act as nature’s pain relief. Its effect can be restful and refreshing. Green shades can expand and cool a room, giving us space to breathe. In a time when our routines have been changed, green brings a feeling of restoration and freedom. The three greens in Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Trends palette — “Fernwood Green”, “High Park” and the Color of the Year “October Mist” — are soft, muted and easy to incorporate into our homes. Terra-cotta shades are bringing us warmth and security and help to make us feel grounded, which is a big benefit when unprecedented changes occur in our lives. Benjamin Moore’s “Wild Flower” and “Venetian Portico” are shades in this year’s trends that add a little punch and interest to the palette without being overwhelming. Being grounded is helpful when the world feels chaotic, but we’re also simultaneously craving travel. Muted, color-washed tones that remind us of exotic and anxiety-free destinations are being painted on our walls. Soft blues, lilacs, lemon and sage greens remind us of easy sunsoaked days and renewing our spirits. They are the primary focus of both the Benjamin Moore and Hirshfield’s 2022 Trend palette, including the hope-filled soft lilac of Hirshfield’s Color of the Year, “Desiree”. Along with the serenity represented in “Desiree” and Benjamin Moore’s “Hint of Violet” is a spiritual strength that symbolizes our ability to create our own happiness and joy. This personal agency is also appearing in our homes as part of the Maximalist trend: bold feature walls, large patterns and inspiring accent colors that are visual representations of our individual personalities. Yellow is one of those strong colors and has been trending for a few years. And yellow continues to influence several of Hirshfield’s and Benjamin Moore’s 2022 palette tones. “Collector’s Item” from Benjamin Moore is a yellowed-white with a unique hint of pink that reflects a larger trend

to warm up the bright whites we’ve been seeing. Whites in general are softening up and after years of being crisp to complement the huge wave of gray, they are heading back in the direction of warmth and creaminess. The neutrals have shifted away from the grays of the past few years and are warmer, cleaner shades of beige. Hirshfield’s “Sheepskin” and Benjamin Moore’s “Natural Linen” are easy colors that work with the color-washed tones of the 2022 palettes. The additional neutrals have, not surprisingly, a hint of green to them: Benjamin Moore’s “Morning Dew” and “Quiet Moments” and Hirshfield’s “Lady Nicole” are background colors with a hint of interest to help our spaces feel fresh. Fresh shades need anchors to act a backdrop to their dramatic impact. Established classics such black, bronze and navy blue show up in Benjamin Moore’s “Mysterious”, a rich deep blue black that belongs in the stable of trusted anchor colors in design, and in Hirshfield’s “Terra Pin”, a deep gray green. The inspiring and harmonious colors in both Hirshfield’s and Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Trend palettes reflect another major trend: a change in how we spend our time. We’re reconsidering how and where we work and focusing on our friends and families in new ways. Authenticity is at the forefront of our interactions online and in person. Colors that allow us to stay true to who we are and how we want to function in the world will continue to trend strongly. And colors that help us feel good, happy, strong and inspired will keep emerging as trends we will embrace. hirshfields.com. 3441 Hazelton Rd, Edina. (952) 927-4647.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO OVERALL HEALTH GET STARTED ON YOUR JOURNEY TOWARDS A NEW BEGINNING ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE

Dr. Susan Quigley was exposed to chiropractic medicine as a young child. At the age of two, she was very pigeon-toed, so her parents brought her to a chiropractor. By correcting her hips, she was able to avoid surgery. It was also beneficial to her brother, who had asthma and ear infections. While in her teens, it helped her again with endometriosis and that, along with the right nutrition, is what she believes enabled her to conceive a baby years later. In 2009, Dr. Susan became a doctor of chiropractic medicine, and since then, has been inspired to heal others. “In 2011, with a 2 month old baby, I started my own brand and business,” she says. “SuNu means ‘New Beginnings.’ It was a new beginning for me as a business owner and a mom. I was fortunate to find a space in Minnetonka, a lovely healing setting surrounded by a wonderful community.” SuNu Wellness has since grown to include another center in Linden Hills, which is owned by her best friend, Dr. Liz Gingrey, and has a combined total of 32 staff members. “From the beginning we’ve been continuing to learn and grow together, and constantly come back to our pillars: Commitment, Trust, Honesty, Empathy, Gratitude, Awareness, Collaboration, Service, Personal Growth and Personal Responsibility,” says Dr. Susan. In addition to Chiropractic services that include pediatric, infant, prenatal/Webster technique and sports/rehab, there are massage and bodywork (including Swedish, deep tissue, myofascial release, prenatal and postpartum massage, and shiatsu), holistic nutrition and quantum integration (muscle testing), bioressonance scans (hair and saliva lab test for nutrient deficiency, food sensitivities, and underlying immune challenges), acupuncture and
herbs, reiki, sound bowl therapy, hypnobirthing classes and mental health therapies. SuNu basically covers the whole spectrum of health. “Our collaborative approach sets us apart,” she says. “Feedback we get from our clients is that SuNu is a ‘one stop shop’ for health. We tailor a treatment plan for each client to meet their health goals, and our practitioners collaborate on their care throughout their wellness journey. We strive to create a safe space that is welcoming to all.” A doctor of chiropractic, Dr. Susan explains, uses a hands-on approach to health care that focuses on how bone, joint and nerve problems affect overall health. “Chiropractors detect and remove subluxations, or misalignments of the spine, allowing proper communication between the brain and body, therefore restoring function to the nervous system. As a result, many patients experience improvements in a variety of conditions. Chiropractic doctors utilize this drug-free approach since they treat the whole body as a holistic system, focusing less on symptoms and more on maintaining a healthy body.” A common misconception, she says, is that chiropractors only “crack bones” or treat back pain. “At SuNu, we use a very gentle approach and can help so many different conditions just by removing interference in the nervous system (we’ve had success helping with carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, migraines, vertigo, insomnia, and pregnancy symptoms, as well as back/neck pain and stiffness). Our organ systems and muscles are all connected through our nervous system and the spine.”

SuNu’s six female doctors are certified in many different techniques and have additional training in pediatrics and prenatal care, and utilize soft tissue modalities, sports medicine, and craniosacral. “There have always been skeptics and non-believers of ‘alternative medicine’ but science and research is showing more and more what many have already intuitively known - our health and wellness depends on our structure and function,” says Dr. Susan. “I believe that this industry will be the leaders in healthcare in the future.” Dr. Susan, who lives in Edina with her husband, Josh, and two sons, Desmond, age 10, and Jasper, age 3, enjoys guiding people towards being their best selves on their wellness journeys. She and her family have a regenerative garden, since she also believes in using food as medicine. “It’s so rewarding to empower people to understand their bodies and partner with them toward their health goals,” she says. Here, she gives us advice on practices we can implement today to improve our health: • •
• • • • •
Get ample sunlight and fresh air Aim to eat 30 different plants per day! A plantbased diet full of diversity is what builds a healthy microbiome. Our gut health directly impacts our brain and immune system Exercise - any movement, especially a walk in nature, helps to ground us Find stress reducing practices like meditation, yoga, and breath work Spend time barefoot – it balances our nervous system Plant a garden Pay attention to media consumption to reduce stress and cortisol
To learn more, SuNu offers a free 15-minute phone consultation to answer any questions before scheduling. And readers of Edina Lifestyle will get $25 off their first session! Just mention Edina Lifestyle magazine when you call. 952.314.7035 www.sunuwellness.com

Lavender Lemonade ARTICLE BY KASSI MIRANOWSKI
This lemonade recipe is perfect for baby shower drinks, bridal showers, or even a simple summer brunch.
INGREDIENTS • 6 cups water divided • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/4 cup honey • 3 Tbsp dried lavender • 2 cups lemon juice • Lemon slices and lavender stems for garnish • Blue or purple food coloring optional
DIRECTIONS 1. Over medium heat, combine two cups of water and sugar, bringing to a boil until sugar is dissolved. Turn off of the heat and stir in honey and lavender. 2. Allow mixture to steep for 2 hours (less if you want less of a lavender taste). Strain the liquid, pressing the lavender down to make sure you get all of those juices into your mixture! 4. Feel free to add a couple drops of blue or purple food coloring if you want more color than the lavender provides. Makes the lemonade especially cute for those brunches! Serve over ice. 5. If you want to make this a cocktail, just add in a bit of vodka, whiskey, champagne…whichever type of alcohol you prefer for your drinks. 6. Enjoy!
