Wow! It’s almost the end of the year, and I literally cannot believe it. Tying in with the celebration of Thanksgiving, November is our Thankful issue. The Edina Lifestyle Team certainly is thankful for our readership, our community, and the opportunity to help support local. On a personal note, November is always a reflecting month for me, and this year I am thinking a lot about gratitude. The formal definition is - the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. Bottom line, it is something I try to remind myself of every day. Lots of my own decisions are based on what it might feel like to stand in someone else’s shoes, showing kindness and empathy, trying to give the benefit of the doubt, and paying good things forward. The holidays are fast approaching and we caught up with Claire Ferrara of Standard Heating and Air Conditioning. You can tell Claire is thankful for her education at Dunwoody Institute and grateful for the vast opportunities her company is able to offer those seeking a new path. We also caught up with local business owners and members of the community to get a feel for what they are thankful for this season. For those who are shopping early, we have included a gift guide so you can start checking things off the list. For those who love to decorate, we have highlighted a tablescape you can easily re-invent at home. And if it’s not too chilly, we offer some tips from the owners of Savor & Swirl on how to prepare for a fun and unique autumn dinner party. Creating a unique fall or holiday tablescape setting that will stun your party guests doesn’t have to be an overwhelming step of your party planning! Keep it simple and follow the steps below to create a similar beautiful look for your own gathering. Head to your local craft store and pick out faux pumpkins in a variety of sizes and colors to creatively pile in the center of your dining table. The amount of pumpkin decor will vary depending on the length of your table, so keep that in mind as you choose! For longer tables, adding in some larger sizes will help fill the space up easily. An Industry that Fosters Job Satisfaction Through Helping Others

As president and CEO of Standard Heating & Air Conditioning in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Claire Ferrara couldn’t imagine doing anything else. “I really like that we provide a service that people actually need and we have an opportunity to help them with something they may not understand,” she says. “We enjoy it and are up for the challenge!” Claire wants to encourage more people, especially women, to look into a career in the trades. She has seen massive growth in the industry, especially over the last five years, and says there are more people working in the HVAC profession than ever before. But, there is also a bigger labor shortage than there’s ever been before. “This is actually good news for anyone who’s been displaced out of their job by the pandemic and looking for a career change,” she says. “I’m seeing growing interest from women towards our industry and trades in general, which is amazing, but I think we still have a long way to go.” She says many people think they need a technical background or experience working with tools in order to get into the field, but that’s not so. “You will be plenty qualified if you have a desire to learn and problem solve and work well with others. I think the biggest thing is to have the interest - if you’re interested in doing something, then go and learn more about it.” Claire attended Dunwoody College of Technology and is thankful for the education and guidance she received there. “The teachers at Dunwoody care about their students being ready on day one, and they put so much into their curriculum. But they also want their students to have a great work ethic and the skills to know how to interview. The instructors do everything they can to put the students in a place to be ready for the working world, not just the trade.”

A trade school, she explains, is typically a one- or two-year program, but you don’t have to start in trade school. “We promote going to trade school, and people come to us out of trade school, but they also come to us as career changers. “If someone hasn’t gone to trade school yet, we will work with them to work for us and earn a living and learn about the industry while they’re going to school. We have internal training programs and we have an accredited apprenticeship program, and whether they’ve gone to trade school or not, we’re going to put them through that.” The employees at Standard Heating & Air Conditioning have very diverse backgrounds in terms of age, sex, gender, identity, nationality and more. “We have employees 19 years of age all the way to almost 70, and many of them have come to us from a variety of industries such as, among many others, healthcare, food service, automotive, carpentry, the military and the corporate world,” says Claire. What the technicians have in common is they generally like to be on the move - going to different homes every day - working with their hands, and taking great satisfaction in seeing a finished product, whether it’s equipment that’s now working or something that’s been built. “They don’t shy away from solving a problem and helping people,” she says. The company offers its staff ongoing training since they have to evolve with the times. “The physics of heating and cooling don’t change that much, but pretty much everything else in our industry changes over time,” says Claire. “There are certainly continued advances in technology such as smart home devices, the ability to get real-time feedback on the function of your equipment, and how your house is performing. People are more tech savvy, and they want us to be more tech savvy too.”

We enjoy it and are up for the challenge!” They are also much more conscious of how they shop and what businesses they patronize. “Consumers hold a business like ours to an even higher standard than they did even five years ago, and this is good, because it keeps us on our toes and makes sure that we maintain the highest possible standard we can in everything we do. So, it’s a good challenge to have.” She wants people to know there are many lifelong career paths in the HVAC industry and hope they will

look into finding out more. “These positions not only offer top pay and benefits, but there are real opportunities to lead, teach and help people. There’s literally just about something for everyone, and I wish more people would come join us.” Claire encourages those with an interest to contact the company. For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. • Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
