You start your car at 7:45 in the morning. It’s still pitch black out. It will be just as dark when you return.
Your commute is a grim slushy ribbon of asphalt, packed to the hilt with drivers who apparently only saw cars for the first time earlier that morning. Your first attempt to sip coffee from your new travel mug (Sharper Image, $34.99) produces a real Gorbachev of a splotch on your favorite necktie (Disney Store, $64.00). You didn’t have time to cook breakfast, so you’re relieved to discover a not-too-hard donut (Speedway, $1.09) under the passenger seat.
You arrive at the office. You feel its fluorescent beigeness wash over you as you walk to your desk. A faint whiff of hot photocopier chemical serpentines into your brain. You take your chair and set about your duties. A semi-productive 17 minutes pass before your boss beckons everyone to come to listen to him.
Goals. Teamwork. Communication. Wellness. “Everyone go ahead and give yourselves a pat on the back.” Oh no. The boss is attempting to motivate you. You wonder how large of a tent you would need to get by in Hawaii until a mention of your name snaps you out of your reverie.
“...well? How about it?” the boss asks. His expectant expression gives way to one touched by disdain as you fumble for an acceptably vague answer. “Oh … yes, absolutely,” you offer, eyebrows raised, prayerfully. The boss hates your answer. He then takes notice of your Buzz Lightyear necktie, rolls his eyes, and moves on.
The rest of the day is a blur – immemorable, like so many days at the office have been, and like so many more will be. You don’t really feel anything at all until that precise moment when the thin beams of your headlights pierce the inky dark night to connect with the world’s most precious and beautiful thing.

A sofa that had been imbued with the musks of a thousand vermin. A bed which creaked so noisily that it elicited complaints from my neighbors. Milk crates deemed “no longer fit for service” by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
I have owned all of these pieces of furniture before. Thank goodness I now have money, taste, my own home, and a wife who forces me to buy actual decent furniture, or else I might never have progressed past them.
Now that I’ve shopped for furniture indoors, I’m acquainted with every type of furniture shopping experience there is. Many stores treat me like I’m an intruder, who has ungraciously taken it upon himself to distract the staff from their cell phones. Many others have decidedly more helpful staff, even if that just means they can recite from sales sheets. But only a few – and by “a few,” I mean “Yetzer” – actually instill me with what is unarguably the best thing you can feel while you’re making a major investment in your decor.

That means when you foamjack next to your house, you’re depositing a giant blob of toxicity there – forever, or until it goes to a landfill.” CONTINUED

Many homeowners would enthusiastically pump pure botulism toxin into their soil if it posed the cheapest fix for their sunken pool decks. If I don’t consistently do it the right way and on the first try, then I simply can’t afford to do business.”

Ordinary happenings at Grace Beginnings Academy are beautiful enough to bring Becky Mielke to tears.
“It happened the other day, outside the 1-yearolds’ classroom, just after the babies had finished ‘finger painting’ – but using their feet instead of their fingers,” recounted the senior director of communications for Grace Church. “I peeked into the room to spy a teacher washing the paint off a little boy’s feet. She tended to him with such love and care in that moment that I couldn’t help but feel His light.”
“Jesus is the foundation for everything we do,” said Rebekah Hall, head of school for Grace Beginnings Academy. “Our non-denominational church offers affordable childcare to everyone, regardless of their beliefs.”
“One of our greatest priorities is to reach and make disciples of children. They’re especially fond of the slides built into the hillside surrounding the playground.”
“Our 30 classrooms are all state of the art: newly renovated, and jam packed with interesting learning materials,” said Rebekah. “Of course, these are children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old we’re talking about. Kids that young predominantly learn by playing, which is why we recently added 4,000 square feet of indoor space dedicated to exactly that.”
Neat things to climb on. Tracks built for frenetic tricycling. A projector that casts interactive games on the floor. A wall-sized ‘Lite-Brite’ board, where big neon dowels bring technicolor fantasies to life. It’s all lined by floorto-ceiling windows – a far cry from the mildewy church basements more than a few of us were molded in.
“There are so many exciting things in our indoor play area that we constantly have to rotate them in and out,” said Rebekah. “The kids would become overstimulated otherwise.”
Grace Beginnings values children’s safety above all else, and takes extensive care to secure it. “We all wish the most uneventful career possible to our school resource officer,” Becky added, “but we take heart knowing he’s here all the same.”
“I was walking the halls the other day when I happened across a teacher and preschooler,” Rebekah recalled. “The kid was taking a much-needed breather from the rough day he was apparently having. His teacher suggested they stop and pray. ‘But what should we pray for?’ the boy asked. ‘Well … what should we pray for?’ the teacher answered. ‘Hmm,’ the boy thought. ‘Let’s pray for you!’
“So they prayed together, for her. It was beautiful .”

Toronto. 2007. I’m relocating from a slummy apartment to another equally slummy one. I’m not moving up in the world. I’m not moving down in it, either.
All my possessions are crammed into a cab. My mattress is lashed to its roof. I spy treasure en route. Drawers. Bookcase. Easy chair. All left on the sidewalk for anyone to take.
