On April 19th, 2024, the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame inducted Eden Prairie’s greatest resident singer-songwriter: our very own Pamela McNeill.

A native of Winona, Pamela has written for many artists including lyrics for Yanni and songs for Wynonna. Pamela has also released seven original studio albums, including American Breakup (2002), Hurtsville, USA (2014), and Neon Lightning (2022). Her induction celebrated Pamela’s long commitment to her craft – and placed her among legends.

“Prince. Bob Dylan. Judy Garland. When I first learned I would join such a rich company of artists, I was moved to tears,” Pamela reflected. “All it took were decades of practice, a million rehearsals and auditions, and more shows than I could count. It’s been a tremendous and rewarding journey, and receiving this honor was its highest point.”

It began out of love of benefaction. Over six decades ago, the Eden Prairie Lions took action. To raise money for worthy causes, especially those helping diabetics and the hearing and visually impaired, they came up with a great new idea: a fair.

Today, Schooner Days is our town’s biggest attraction. Why did it gain so much traction? It’s not just because the Lions’ mission includes free admission. There are trucks serving fried eats, iced treats and grilled meats – and things you’ll agree are tasty and good even if you’re not hasty to eat carnival food. There are rides aplenty. You’ll feel truly alive whether you’re 5 or 20. There is also a midway, where festivalgoers mill and dance around games of skill and chance.

Dr. Amanda Haeg

No drugs. No surgery. Only abilities you were born with, but may need help regaining.

Dr. Amanda Haeg is lucky. Her special number is seven – though she might not have thought so, were it not for chiropractic.

Seven was Dr. Haeg’s number while she played volleyball in high school and in college. It was the number she wore for eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Passion, the full-contact women’s football team that she joined in her twenties and most recently played for last year. Sadly, seven was also the number Dr. Haeg wore when a couple of linewomen nearly snapped her in two.

“I had one knee in my chest, my other leg straight behind me, and the weight of two very powerful women on top of me,” Dr. Haeg recounted. “I heard a pop. From that point on, I could no longer walk without pain – let alone run.”

Dr. Haeg received several different types of specialized care for her injury. After six months, nothing improved. The constant pain forced her to face a nasty prospect: her new, nightmarish normal might last forever. No more playing sports. No more working as an athletic trainer. No chasing around the children she hoped to have someday.

“Finally, I went to see a chiropractor,” said Dr. Haeg. “Two weeks and six adjustments later, I was jogging without pain again. The whole experience was a revelation. Chiropractic didn’t just give me back my future. It also became what I wanted to do with my future.”

Dr. Haeg has now spent seven beautiful years helping people at Cadence Chiropractic, her clinic in Eden Prairie. She is Minnesota’s only practitioner of the Pierce Results System, and one of very few with a video X-ray. Alongside her thermography scanner and traditional X-ray machine, these tools allow Dr. Haeg to scientifically analyze each patient’s spine – and pinpoint the source of its dysfunction.

“Such thorough examination gives me objective insight into how each patient’s joints, muscles,

ligaments and nervous system all function together. Wherever there is miscommunication between them, there is an opportunity to heal. No drugs. No surgery. Only abilities you were born with, but may need help regaining.”

Dr. Haeg has helped people from all walks of life over the years. A young hockey player who could no longer train or compete without crushing headaches; back on the ice, free of pain. A man whose neck had degenerated so badly that he could no longer look upward; now able to look in whichever direction he pleases. A woman who had been scheduled for two knee surgeries two years apart; recovered so quickly that she finished both in a span of five months. A baby, whose soft head had flattened on the side she preferred sleeping on; recovered without spending a minute in helmet therapy. She has even explained how she could save a certain magazine writer from having to listen to his own neck every time he looks at his second computer monitor. (It is where I watch funny dog videos in between writing paragraphs.)

“If sports have taught me anything, it’s the importance of teamwork in every relationship – including the ones I share with my patients,” said Dr. Haeg. “Careful analysis must precede effective treatment for arthritis, migraine, ear infection, vertigo, degenerative disc disease, and any of the dozens of other issues people regularly seek my care for. But if you only look at biomechanics, you’ll miss the big picture. That’s why I make each patient a true partner in their recovery. It’s the only way I can understand how their condition is holding them back, and what I can do to help them achieve their health goals. Some people want to resume playing sports. Some have to get back to work. Plenty of others just wish they could keep up with their grandchildren. To all of them, I say let’s work it out – together!”

Chiropractic didn’t just give me back my future. It also became what I wanted to do with my future.

Dr. Haeg’s specialties are sports, pregnancy and pediatric chiropractic, although no joint in the human body is beyond her powers of restoration. Her clinic also offers contrast therapy, which is yet another treatment she has found immensely helpful during her own recovery journey.

Pedego Twin Cities

No more excuses.

Too many hills, too long a ride, tough pedaling – all those excuses, familiar to so many cycling enthusiasts, vanish when you hop on an electric bicycle, or e-bike.

“E-bikes eliminate all the things that keep people from getting out and enjoying a ride,” says Tony Gaffney, owner of Pedego Twin Cities. The Eden Prairie dealership carries the full line of e-bikes by Pedego, one of America’s leading brands. “Hills disappear, miles traveled aren’t a problem anymore. People say, ‘Where else can we go today?’ They’re proud of being able to take longer trips than they ever could before.”

At first glance, an e-bike looks like a slightly chunkier version of a conventional bicycle –pedals, chain, handlebar, they’re all there. The big difference is a compact battery, mounted either on the frame or behind the seat, and a small motor mounted at the hub of the rear wheel. (Many European e-bikes and some mountain bikes mount the motor midway, between the pedals’ crank arms; all Pedego models have hub-mounted motors.)

On an e-bike, the battery-powered motor shares the work with the rider – and the rider decides just how much sharing is involved. “All of our models are equipped with an independent

throttle,” says Tony. “The rider uses the throttle with as much or as little pedal assist as desired. To get across an intersection quickly, you can use the throttle for a fast start without any pedal assist at all.” The throttle alone can get the bike up to 20 mph, the motor’s governed top speed.

It’s possible to stay with the throttle and not pedal at all, although that will drain the battery more quickly. Ideally, a rider finds the right match between motor power and pedal assist. As on a conventional bike, pedaling effort is also regulated by shifting gears. “Most of our bikes have eight gears,” Tony explains, “and there are 10 on the higher-end Platinum models. You shift the same way you would on a regular bike – all the controls, including the throttle, are on the handlebar.”

How far can you ride on a battery charge? “It depends a lot on how much you pedal,” says Tony, “and on how flat the terrain is. Pedego bikes use Samsung lithium-ion batteries, in ranges from 36 volt/10.5 amp up to our biggest battery, 52 volt/17.5 amp.” For the smallest batteries, figure on a 15 to 30-mile range, with a reasonable amount of pedal assist. Bigger batteries can keep an e-bike going upwards of 60 miles, again depending on rider effort. “And watch your tire pressure,” Tony advises. “Check before taking your ride. Underinflated tires make more work for you and the motor.”

Depending on size, an e-bike battery will charge in two to six hours. “If you’re in a hurry, though, you can partially charge,” Tony advises. “It’s a good idea to unplug when you reach full charge, although it’s OK to leave it on the charger overnight. Just don’t leave it on all weekend.”

How long will a battery last? “It depends on how many miles you travel a year, and how many charge cycles the battery runs through per year. Seven to ten years is average,” according to Tony.

E-bike prices at Pedego Twin Cities range from around $2,000, for an entry-level Comfort Cruiser, to the $4,500 range for one of the Platinum models. Those are equipped with front suspension forks, seat posts with suspension, and torque sensors that match motor input to pedaling effort. The dealer’s currently most popular bikes are two “step-through” models, the Interceptor and Boomerang, priced at around $3,000, with an additional $1,000 for the Platinum upgrade. “Step-through” refers to the frame style that once characterized what were called “girls” bikes, a concept that’s nowadays been put to rest. “Both men and women like step-throughs,” says Tony, “especially if they plan on keeping their bikes for a long time. They’re easier to get on and off.”

Tony reports that the biggest e-bike market is the over-55 set, including “anyone who wants to keep up with a partner who rides a regular bike. We’ve even retaught people how to ride a bike.” Pedego Twin Cities is also starting to see interest among younger buyers, as cargo and child-carrying accessories are available. Some enthusiasts use their e-bikes to commute, including hardy types who ride in snow. Winter riders usually use wider tires – and, Tony adds, “you can even get studs.”

Want to try before you buy? Pedego Twin Cities offers rentals, hourly and up. The dealer also runs guided tours and group rides. They’re mainly for folks who already have an e-bike, but rentals are available for friends and spouses who want to join in. “There are lots of trails in our area,” says Tony, “especially in Eden Prairie.” And they’re all accessible to e-bikes.

“I started my own business in February 2022,” said Kristin Derus Dore, owner of Eden Biofeedback. “Back then I had zero clients, and not many more professional connections to speak of. That all began to change once I joined the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce Women's Committee. It’s where I met so many great women who became my clients, introduced me to their own clients, mentored me, and helped me grow and achieve. Today my business is successful, and I owe so much of it to the friends I’ve made over the past two years!”

“No offense to any women who feel that they aren’t,” said Marcia LeVoir, independent associate with LegalShield, “but for the most part, I think we’re fairly social beings. We have a certain energy that only comes out when we share time together. The Women’s Committee creates that positive, uplifting energy, and then turns it into meaningful, rewarding relationships.”

The quarterly Women’s PowHER Up Networking Breakfast, a smash hit thanks in no small part to The Original Pancake House. The Ladies in Leadership Luncheon, the latest of which featured guest speaker and certified mental performance coach Dr. Cindra Kamphoff. The Purse Bingo fundraiser, which is even better than its name indicates because it also involves drinking at Fat Pants. The Women’s Committee of the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to their regular events, and especially encourages your attendance at Purse Bingo even if you don’t give a fig about business.

“Men are also welcome at Purse Bingo, and there are other prizes, too,” said Kristin. “But it is mostly women. And purses.”

At its heart, the Women’s Committee is about elevating Eden Prairie. Successful businesses, be they women-owned or otherwise, chum the waters of mercantilism in ways that benefit us all. But committee members aren’t merely networking. They’re also selflessly giving of themselves to worthy causes. CONTINUED

“Raising money for training, programs and scholarships has always been central to our mission,” said Kristin. “Many of our networking events focus on giving, like the Derby Warm-Up Happy Hour we hosted at Flying Dutchman Spirits last spring. We wore fun hats, drank good mint juleps, and raised money for several local non-profits such as PROP Food Shelf and Eden Prairie Schools.”

“Before 2020, the Women’s Committee also focused on community outreach,” said Marcia. “For example, a few of us had come together to sow a beautiful vegetable garden that helped feed many of PROP’s clients. The events of 2020 sadly undid all that great work – but at the rate we’re rebuilding, I expect it won’t be long until our group resumes doing good for the community we're so proudly part of.”

“I speak from experience when I say how isolating entrepreneurship can feel,” said Kristin. “Our group gives many women a community they never knew existed, let alone experienced before. Here they find their peers, who can give them objective insight into their goals, ideas that revolutionize their marketing, and referrals that help them achieve success faster.”
