LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Greatest Wealth is Health Somewhere, over the rainbow, Way up tall, There's a land where they've never heard of cholesterol. – Allan Sherman Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle readers, Do you know why Eden Prairie Lifestyle is consistently ranked among the top greatest works of Western literature? The finely worded articles, expertly framed photography and endlessly fascinating advertisements are all a part of it, to be sure. But none of those things could have come to be if we weren’t in peak physical and mental condition. We can’t disclose all the secrets behind our Herculean physiques and crystal clear psyches. The world just isn’t ready for them. Still, we know we can trust you with exactly four of our health tips: 1. Follow a fun fitness regimen at either of Life Time’s two Eden Prairie locations 2. Achieve your full potential with holistic modalities by F.Y.T. Health & Wellness 3. Enjoy having a perfect smile courtesy of The Dental Specialists Orthodontics 4. Feed your dog or cat wholesome foods and supplements from Pet Evolution Pickleball. Reiki. Invisalign. Digestive probiotics for dogs. There. You’re already well on your way to becoming an even better you. Just don’t get so focused on health and wellness that you forget the other three things you’ll need for success: cybersecurity, philanthropism, and a sound understanding of your company culture and what you can do to improve it. I swear, though, it’s pure coincidence that this issue happens to feature Arctic Wolf, the Eden Prairie Community Foundation, and SELECTTORS by Full Sail Solutions. As always, I would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. I always welcome any feedback or interest you may have in appearing on our magazine’s pages! Best regards,

Medusa’s message to Minneapolis Public Schools on March 7th, 2023 began with that chilling warning. The ransomware gang proceeded to explain it had seized over 300,000 of the school district’s files and would restore them in exchange for $1 million. On the advice of the FBI, Minneapolis Public Schools did not submit to Medusa’s demand. The gang retorted by leaking all the information it had stolen to the general public. Medical records. Discrimination complaints. Reports containing intimate details of children’s private lives. In total, the breach affected more than 100,000 people. Ransomware actors are estimated to have extorted $900 million in 2023 alone. They will continue targeting more school districts, as well as any other organizations and businesses that possess valuable information. Fortunately, their attempts to raid Eden Prairie Schools will be met by the fiercest cybersecurity in the industry. Our town’s own Arctic Wolf stands guard. “As of 10 years ago, cybercrime outpaced the international drug trade in terms of pure revenue,” said Dan Larson, CMO of Arctic Wolf. “And thanks to modern technology, it’s no longer impractical for cybercriminals to target even the smallest mom-and-pop coffee shops. Connecting your business to the internet without protection isn’t like leaving your door unlocked. It’s the equivalent of leaving it wide open. “Ransomware is currently the greatest threat to cybersecurity. Once the malicious software has secretly installed itself, it begins quickly encrypting and locking files, rendering the end user totally unable to do business for several weeks. Ransomware operators usually demand millions of dollars for the key that will restore their victim’s data – and once they are paid, there is no guarantee they will provide it. “Ransomware is just one example of increasing cybercrime. We’re also seeing a rise in business email

compromise, where cybercriminals pose as employees so they can trick others into wiring them money and sharing sensitive information. Like ransomware, this type of fishing attack cannot be thwarted through conventional means. If a firewall and antivirus software constitute your entire approach to cybersecurity, then you truly are bringing a knife to a gunfight. “Arctic Wolf was founded by multiple cybersecurity industry veterans in 2012. We understood which tools are most effective at repelling ransomware and other attacks. We also understood that those tools – like any other tools – cannot be effective in amateur hands. That’s partly because many end users adopt a ‘set it and forget it’ attitude toward cybersecurity. They pay for a product, turn it on, and assume everything will be good from there on out. What they don’t realize is that cybersecurity requires constant vigilance. And if they do, they probably don’t have the resources they would need to exercise it. “Arctic Wolf solves that problem with our Concierge Security Team, which monitors our clients’ networks and instantly responds to threats 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whenever one of our clients believes they have a virus or any other need for our assistance, they’re immediately in touch with an advisor who already knows the ins and outs of their organization. To this day, our Concierge model remains unique to our industry. “Effective cybersecurity isn’t just reacting to threats. It’s also proactive, which is why we continually assess each client’s security posture and advise how they can strengthen it. That may include implementing various supplemental security products, setting up two-factor authentication, and providing cybersecurity awareness training for their team members. For example, once employees know to treat certain emails with an appropriate amount of skepticism, about 90% of cyber attacks will make it no further than their inboxes. CONTINUED >

“We make our training more effective by making it more accessible. Rather than force employees to attend grueling 90-minute seminars, we regularly share bite-size clips that gradually transform them into cybersecurity experts. “We’re proud to call Eden Prairie Schools one of our clients, and we consider it a special point of pride to safeguard the Minnesota Vikings as well. Those are just two of more than 4,600 organizations across the globe

that are currently protected by Arctic Wolf. At this rate, Eden Prairie might just become one of the cybersecurity capitals of the world.” The Arctic Wolf Platform currently processes over 4 trillion security events each week. If you would like to confidently do business in an increasingly perilous digital world, then the Arctic Wolf Platform is ready to process your security events as well. Maybe you are a teenager, and are currently rewarding yourself for finishing your homework by reading your favorite magazine. Or maybe you haven’t been required to learn algebra since rotary phones were in vogue. No matter. So long as you still have them, it’s always a good time to straighten your teeth. And you live in the best place to do it, because our town is home to the practice of Dr. Adam J. Sperl. As a member of The Dental Specialists, Dr. Sperl belongs to a network of 31 doctors who practice every type of care modern dentistry has to offer. He is an orthodontist: an expert at setting things straight. “I specialize in orthodontics because I love providing truly transformative care,” said Dr. Sperl. “By making major improvements to their smiles, I’m also making major improvements to my patients’ health, self-confidence, and overall outlook on life. I would never diminish my peers who specialize in fillings, crowns and root canals, but only orthodontic care can literally put smiles on people’s faces. “Invisalign gives the Diamond Plus accreditation to the top one percent of their providers. A practice has to complete at least 400 cases annually to earn that distinction. Altogether, the orthodontists of The Dental Specialists exceed that many cases each year, and I complete the highest volume of the four of us. “Braces aren’t obsolete. Sometimes they’re the best option for straightening teeth. Sometimes they’re the only option. That said, many of my new patients are surprised to learn they are good candidates for Invisalign. They may already know that Invisalign treatment is quick, comfortable, and virtually invisible. What they haven’t learned is how far Invisalign technology has advanced over the past decade.

“Invisalign is now suitable for the majority of teenagers and adults who would like to straighten their teeth. Even if you suffer from severe bite issues, require oral surgery, or have two or three teeth that could only be straightened by braces, you can still correct your smile discreetly with Invisalign. I have provided Invisalign to patients who are in their 80s. Just recently, one of my senior patients told me her only complaint about Invisalign is that she hadn’t done it 20 years ago!” Dr. Sperl is aware that his patients have better places to be than his waiting room. That is why his practice has focused on providing efficient care, and has invested in technology like the iTero digital scanning system. “Traditionally, an orthodontist had to create a mold of their patient’s teeth, send it to a lab, and wait to receive the results before developing a treatment,” said Dr. Sperl. “They had to repeat that same long, arduous process every time they wanted to gauge how well a treatment was working. But thanks to the iTero oral scanner, I’m now able to create a full 3D digital image of my patient’s entire mouth right here in my office and in a matter of seconds. It has made orthodontic care considerably more convenient for my patients who are eager to get life-changing results. “If you have a major life event coming up – a prom, a college graduation, a wedding, even a 50th wedding anniversary – then I am confident I can give you your best smile before the big day arrives. In some cases, Invisalign treatment can take as few as three months!” The Dental Specialists Orthodontics practice in Eden Prairie is located at 18315 Cascade Drive. Please call (952) 653-0475 to schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Sperl, or visit smiletds.com to learn more.

DOING THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE THE GREATEST IMPACT ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

Your body is a universe. Your mind is immeasurable. And your soul? It is beyond Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s powers of estimation, though suffice to say it is rather big. Barriers. Imbalances. Disconnections. Machines can’t detect when these things are in your body, mind and soul. But they don't need to. You can sense them well enough – as well as address them, with Vanessa Nordstrom’s help. Vanessa’s mother was a Christian Scientist. Her father was a Buddhist, and also practiced the same spirituality as his Native American ancestors. Vanessa therefore grew up surrounded by holistic health and wellness; to her, good health and good beliefs were inextricably tied to one another. The country where Vanessa’s father learned Buddhism was also where he was exposed to Agent Orange. He showed no sign of harm until 24 years later, when he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung and brain cancer. “His doctors gave him two weeks,” said Vanessa. “But they didn’t know what he was capable of. His powers of healthy living carried him another 18 months. He passed away on Father’s Day, just five days after my high school graduation.” Vanessa studied environmental policy in college. Upon discovering limited demand for that area of expertise, she went to work in the consumer packaged goods industry. The corporate world would keep her for decades until she finally left to found a business that helped other businesses adopt more sustainable practices. That was in 2019. The following year did not sustain Vanessa’s new venture. So much the better. Vanessa’s worldview hasn’t been the same since her father’s battle with cancer. That is when she witnessed the big picture – the ways in which physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health must intersect to create true holistic wellness. She now shares that insight with others through F.Y.T. Health & Wellness. CONTINUED >

“I founded F.Y.T. to help people remove the barriers, imbalances and disconnections that are keeping them from becoming their true selves,” said Vanessa. “By breaking down their care into eight pillars of wellness – physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, financial, environmental, nutritional and occupational – I’m able to see where the whole person’s strengths lie, and where their opportunities for improvement begin.” After gaining an understanding of how you are feeling and which symptoms you seek relief from, Vanessa may treat you with any of four modalities: Body Code, Emotion Code, Healy and Reiki. “Body Code allows me to tune in to my client’s subconscious – not in the same way as therapy, but more directly, so I can sense where the most troubling imbalances are and what’s causing them. Body Code rebalances the body, releases the trauma and disconnections which manifest as painful symptoms, and reveals causes of previously unexplained injuries. “Emotion Code focuses on emotional baggage. When negative feelings become

30

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | WE LLN E SS

trapped in our subconscious during points of weakness, physical and mental illness can both follow. That’s because each stressor you encounter can create what is known as a ‘heart wall.’ In addition to interrupting the body’s natural ability to heal, heart walls can make it difficult to form strong relationships. Emotion Code breaks them down. “During a Healy session, my client wears a small device that stimulates healing with individually determined electromagnetic frequencies. It resynchronizes the body’s natural frequencies and restores balance to them, and can be directly applied to problematic areas as well. “As a Holy Fire Reiki Master, I support healing, relaxation and stress relief by guiding my client’s energy flow to where it’s supposed to be. Reiki can bring substantial relief to anyone who is suffering from emotional distress or anxiety, but the feelings of peace and calmness it instills truly are beneficial to all.” F.Y.T. Health & Wellness fosters greater well-being in humans and animals alike. You may learn more about Vanessa’s holistic approach to wellness and schedule your initial consultation at fythealthwellness.coach.

THE EDEN PRAIRIE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S CHIEF FUNDRAISING EVENT

The Eden Prairie Community Foundation is an aspect of our town’s kindness. It has made Eden Prairie a better place to call home since its establishment by community members and city leaders in 1981. Over the past five years alone, the foundation has facilitated the philanthropic investment of over $1 million into nonprofits and agencies that serve Eden Prairie. “Love thy neighbor. It’s succinct, but it’s all the reason we need to do what we do,” said Greg Leeper, executive director of the Eden Prairie Community Foundation. “Thanks to our volunteers and our donors, we have supported PROP and helped bring the Every Meal Food Program to Eden Prairie Schools. We have partnered with the Sojourner Project, which gives shelter and legal advocacy to the West Metro’s most vulnerable women. We provide funding for the Eden Prairie Community Band, invest in many projects that benefit community members with disabilities, and supported the fundraising for the construction of Miracle League Field and Purgatory Creek Park’s Veterans Memorial. We’re proud of our efforts to support a great variety of needs and opportunities throughout our community.” The Eden Prairie Community Foundation’s biggest fundraising event of the year will be held on Friday, April 26th at the Marriott Southwest in Minnetonka. Consider this your cordial invitation to EP Gives: an evening of fine food, fine drink and fine company all made even finer by a prevailing air of benevolence. EP Gives makes donating to the foundation feel even more rewarding thanks to the magic of fabulous prizes. The wine pull is a perennial favorite. Pay $30

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" – Martin Luther King Jr. to select a random bottle of vino – you won’t get a ‘61 Château Latour, but you’ll be quite pleased nevertheless. The silent auction offers a wide range of gift baskets and experiences from local businesses. And once dinner is done, the foundation will unsilently auction off trips to faraway places. Previous years’ destinations have included Bali, Mexico, Costa Rica, Boston and Chicago. CONTINUED >

“EP Gives isn’t just about raising money for our programs and grantmaking,” said Greg. “It’s also about bringing people together for a great time, and showcasing all the great work we’re doing for our community. I hope you’ll come celebrate our legacy with us, and share the same sense of satisfaction our volunteers are fortunate to feel every day.” Register for EP Gives today at epgives.org, or make a charitable donation by visiting epcommunityfoundation.org/donate.

LIFE TIME Experience Healthy, Happy Living at Its Best

It’s midnight, January 1st, some year past. You cheer at the strike of the hour, pretend to know the words to “Auld Lang Syne,” and maybe – maybe – get a kiss. You are aglow with champagne and cordiality. But then reality pokes one of its little claws through your blinders. You recall the resolution you made, and realize you now actually have to do it. This is meant to be the year you finally get in shape! You try exercising at home, where there is no space or equipment for exercising. You try exercising outside, which is intermittently frozen solid or filled with trillions of mosquitoes. You try exercising at a gym, but just can’t seem to make yourself fall in love with its concrete-andsweat-sock ambiance. You find yourself wishing you had the perfect place to exercise. Some sort of “athletic country club,” perhaps, where there are pickleball, tennis, basketball, racquetball, swimming, yoga classes, cycling, personal trainers, cardio machines, weights and weight machines, saunas, whirlpool tubs, eucalyptus steam rooms, and complimentary towels for the shower. And so long as this hypothetical country club continues meeting your highest standards, it would also have a cafe, beauty spa, nail salon, and childcare for kids ages 3 months through 11 years. It would even be a nice spot to socialize in. Sadly, such a place could only exist in fantasy. If only that weren’t so, because surely you would have kept a past New Year’s resolution to get in shape otherwise. Oh. Wait. That place is real. And Eden Prairie, being the kind of town it is, has two of them: Life Time Crosstown, and Life Time Eden Prairie Athletic.

“I call it a country club without a golf course,” said Michael Schuh, club leader of Life Time Eden Prairie Athletic. “Wellness and exercise are the main attractions here, of course, but we’re about so much more than living a healthy lifestyle. This is a place where people want to spend their free time. They come here to forget about the stress of their day-to-day lives. They visit Life Time to be happy.” “My office is set up like a big glass bowl, hanging above the center of the club,” said Cooper Craig-Casmer, club leader of Life Time Crosstown. “Just behind me are the tennis courts, where 35 people are currently doing drills. Our members on the fitness floor are doing GTX, a group total body workout program, and Alpha, which combines Olympic-style lifting and strength training. A few others are doing one-on-one Dynamic Stretch with our Certified Stretch Specialists. And in our LifeCafe, I see people enjoying protein shakes after their workouts. Some have their laptops out, no doubt squeezing a little work in so they can justify staying in their favorite spot just a bit longer.” “Life Time is the currently biggest pickleball destination in the country,” said Michael. “The sport has gotten so huge that several Life Times have converted some of their basketball courts into pickleball courts. Our Chanhassen location is even building its own free-standing pickleball destination. CONTINUED >

“This is a place where people want to spend their free time. They come here to forget about the stress of their day-to-day lives. They visit Life Time to be happy.”

“I’m glad to see pickleball’s rising popularity. We’re welcoming more and more guests of all ages and abilities thanks to a sport anyone can pick up and play in just five minutes. We’ve got kids who are only just big enough to hold paddles, all the way up to our oldest pickler who is 95.” “Life Time has always been a great destination for seniors,” added Cooper. “We offer over 100 classes, and our instructors are trained to make them accessible to anyone who’d like to join. And now that we’ve introduced our ARORA Program, our senior members know exactly which classes are best suited to their athletic abilities. It’s perfect whether you’re starting out with the basics, looking for a challenge, or just want to improve your flexibility, balance and strength.”

40

AT H LE T E LIF E | S P O RTS + RE CRE AT ION

“We recently welcomed a new senior member who had never belonged to a gym before,” continued Michael. “At first she only came for water aerobics, though I eventually challenged her to try experiencing some of our other amenities. She never dreamed she would go on our fitness floor, but pretty soon she was doing dance, yoga, and yes – even pickleball. She is down 60 pounds and two blood pressure medications since she first started. She just walked her first 5K!” “We cater just as well to the opposite end of the age spectrum,” said Cooper. “Our Kids Academy Program welcomes babies as young as 3 months – enormous for new parents who are eager to get back to their fitness routines. Older kids get to participate in arts and crafts, academic and learning activities, and progressive lessons in dance, martial arts and gymnastics. There are lots and lots of sports to play, and we’re always adding new programs that keep things interesting for our youngest guests.” “At its heart, Life Time is driven by relationships,” said Michael. “I’m fortunate to work with a great team. I’m equally blessed to see new friendships blossoming between our members every day. Like I said before, we’re about so much more than living a healthy lifestyle. We’re building community!” Life Time Crosstown is located at 6233 Baker Road; Life Time Eden Prairie Athletic, 755 Prairie Center Drive. You can visit either for LifeSpa, or Eden Prairie Athletic if you are intrigued by Rare Steak and Sushi, the on-site upscale restaurant. Day memberships are available! SELECTTORS by Full Sail Solutions IS IT TIME TO TAKE A DEEPER LOOK INTO YOUR COMPANY CULTURE?

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

46

EXP E RT H E LP | P RO FES SION AL SE RVICE S

It is essential for productivity. It reduces costs. Employee retention and the pool of available talent both shrink without it. What is it? It’s a great company culture – and you might have no idea whether your business has it, or what you can do to create one. But you can. Jean Miller spent over two decades examining businesses inside and out. On many occasions, she witnessed glowing deficits in her clients’ company cultures – but as the consultant for her own boutique consulting firm, those weren’t the deficits she had been hired to account for. Over the years, Jean realized that every company culture is affected by ten influencers. She acronymised these influencers SELECTTORS®. When all the SELECTTORS are healthy, a harmonic and high-yielding workplace can exist. But when team members aren’t aware of who leads them – or given the training they need to avoid repeating mistakes – or able to communicate effectively – or offered opportunities to grow and excel – then company culture will suffer for it. “You can see the impact of poor company culture on many lines of a profit and loss statement,” said Jean. “High recruitment costs? A direct result of high employee turnover. Decreasing sales? Because of errors and mistakes, customers are taking their business to your competitors. I developed SELECTTORS because I grew tired of seeing so much wasteful spending due to poor company culture. Rather than tell my clients how much money they’re mistakenly wasting, I now help them identify and correct their wasteful mistakes on a continual basis.” The SELECTTORS assessment tool is an annual program that is administered quarterly, voluntarily and completely anonymously, and it takes less than ten minutes to complete. Employees’ honest answers to simple questions will provide a comprehensive overview of company culture,

Jean Miller

allowing leaders to focus on what needs improving and what’s working well within the organization. “One way we help companies learn how our tool can be beneficial to them is by asking two simple questions,” explained Jean. “First, on a scale of 1 to 10, how important to you is the culture within your company? Second, on the same scale, how much time does your company actually spend on improving company culture? Using SELECTTORS will close the gap between the scores. “In addition to specific opportunities to improve company culture, the SELECTTORS tool provides our signature Compass Heading™ which measures employees’ overall satisfaction with their workplace. That’s all the information leaders need to begin developing strategies that will streamline production, synergize different departments, and motivate team members to place higher value on their contributions to the company. “Think of SELECTTORS as an X-ray. When your doctor takes one, they don’t just send you home with the results. Instead, they use it to figure out how your problem can be fixed. Likewise, once the results of SELECTTORS have been compiled and opportunities for improvement have been identified, companies have three choices: your internal resources can enhance the company culture, external experts trusted by your organization can enhance the culture, or one of our external experts who understands our tool can enhance the culture. “We advise against taking a scattershot approach to improving company culture. Rather than chase down all ten SELECTTORS at once, it is best to focus on a few at a time. Improving company culture is just as vulnerable to scope creep as any other project.

No one will ever finish creating a great company culture. Because companies continually evolve, it is an endless journey, which is why the SELECTTORS tool is so invaluable. CONTINUED >

“No one will ever finish creating a great company culture. Because companies continually evolve, it is an endless journey, which is why the SELECTTORS tool is so invaluable. So long as the program is administered in quarterly intervals, and, most importantly, leaders use the report to make improvements, it will provide an accurate picture of where your company culture is heading – and what you can do to help steer it in the right direction.” Visit selecTTors.com to learn more about SELECTTORS, or call (855) 787-8398 today to talk to Jean about the culture within your organization.

SO, come visit our greenhouse this winter and take a deep breath of the fresh soil and humidity and feel the softness of the leaves on our indoor plants, just don’t touch the cacti! Maybe you can’t really buy happiness, but we think buying plants and flowers comes pretty darn close.

What is the Yetzer Experience? It’s our free in-store and in-home design services. It’s our vast selection of inventory, and knowing you can take home anything on our showroom floor the same day you fall in love with it. It’s the freedom to customize the perfect piece of furniture by great Amish brands like Canadel, Fusion, Oakwood or Smith Brothers. If you can dream it, we can create it! And above all else, the Yetzer Experience is high-quality (yet highly affordable) American-made solid wood furniture – not flimsy particle board shipped from overseas like some big box stores sell. You don’t stay in business for over 80 years by selling junk! Come discover the Yetzer Experience at our stores in Waconia or Forest Lake today! – Thomas Wiest, Owner
