Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle Readers, Welcome to the new and improved magazine! Our graphic designers drank previously unheard of amounts of coffee while creating an even prettier periodical than we had before. We have also upgraded the quality of our articles, as we have added two more monkeys and yet another typewriter to the writing department. (They will have to share.)

In this issue we feature Hi-Five Sports Zone, which is owned by former Harlem Globetrotter Reggie Perkins and offers everything budding athletes need to build confidence, learn leadership and share camaraderie. We were pleased as punch to interview Susan Brust and Corrine Lynch for this issue. They’re two of the family members who run Nordic Ware, the company that put Minnesota on the map with the original Bundt pan back in the ‘60s. We also got an exclusive with Sondra Wentz, dog grooming extraordinaire for Petco. If you think coiffing pooches all day, every day sounds like fun – then you’re right!

You’re forgiven for not attending every ribbon cutting ceremony held at new businesses throughout the greater Eden Prairie area last year. Kids can go to Hi-Five Sports Zone to become better athletes. They can also go to Hi-Five to become better leaders, make new friends, or develop their self-esteem. But all kids who go to Hi-Five share one thing in common: They have a ton of fun!

The state-of-the-art indoor sports center in Eden Prairie teaches children up to seventh grade how to play football, basketball, baseball, soccer and more in a safe and wholesome environment.

The action is structured by career athletes and coaches, who have loved sports all their lives and want kids to share that same passion.

The Hi-Five staff certainly have the charisma to keep kids attentive. As a former member of the Harlem Globetrotters, owner Reggie Perkins appreciates both the fun and the technique which make sports so rewarding for kids.

I couldn’t help but ask Reggie why his team never let the Washington Senators win a game. “Ha!” he laughed. “Well, when you’re better than them, nine times out of ten you’re going to beat them, too!”

“I don’t consider myself a star athlete, though,” said Reggie. “What I consider myself is a fortunate athlete. I was fortunate to spend so much time learning how to play basketball as a kid. I was fortunate to be able to join a team. Now I’m fortunate to offer those same incredible opportunities to any kid who wants to come play!

“It’s always amazing to see how sports can help a kid to come out of their shell. Right now we have a bunch of kids who are just finishing up our eightweek Little Ballers program, which takes ages three through six. Watching their progress from not knowing how to dribble to executing the triple threat position whenever they catch the ball – well, you can just see on their faces, how much more confident they’ve become.

“I would say self-esteem building is the biggest thing we do here. Any hesitation to participate?

That’s always gone by week three at the latest.

“Leadership is an especially important value in my book. For a kid, becoming a great leader means learning how to actually listen to people. That’s how they go from taking instructions to taking action, and it’s also how they get better at communicating their own directions to their peers.

“Our other Hi-Five values are family, friendship, respect, loyalty and teamwork. When we see a kid showing those values by participating and following instructions, we reward them with a Murphy Coin. These tokens have our loveable mascot Murphy the Dog on them, and they give children an instant reward for being good athletes – and also something to spend at our Murphy Mart when the fun’s done for the day.

“This is a great time to join Hi-Five! We’re just starting our new winter classes, where we’ll be focusing on soccer, football and basketball. We’ll welcome a bunch back to Little Ballers, who are going to be eager to earn their next color wristbands. They start out with white wristbands and slowly work their way up to red, white and blue – just like a real Globetrotter wears.

playing anything from flag football to indoor soccer to freeze tag depending on what the kids get excited about. Our Parents’ Night Out Camp also offers our full experience to children on Friday nights, so their folks can finally spend a little one-on-one time together.

“At the end of the day, we’re not training kids to become pro athletes. We’re teaching them to love sports, which nine times out of ten is going to help them enjoy healthier lifestyles. But more than anything, we’re bringing people together. That’s what I love most about sports: Your race and your nationality don’t matter – only your character counts on the court. We see a lot of kids leave Hi-Five with a lot of great friendships because of that.”

You’ve surely noticed Nordic Ware’s logo on the venerable white grain silo near Highways 7 and 100 in St. Louis Park. It is fitting that the logo depicts a Viking, his eyes intent on the horizon.

What could better symbolize a company founded by the children of Swedes and Danes, which today ships their fine products to over 40 countries?

Nordic Ware was founded by Dave Dalquist and his wife Dotty in 1946. As an engineer who had just completed his service in the Pacific theater, Dave certainly possessed the skills he needed to start a manufacturing company. Though he only had $500 for his venture, he also had a serviceable basement, a father who understood the finer points of bookkeeping, an eager brother, and, perhaps most importantly, an expert baker for a wife.

The Dalquists decided to manufacture Scandinavian cookware from aluminum. It was admittedly niche, but the market for Krumkake irons and Ebelskiver pans was warm in a state which suffered from no deficit of people who knew how to use such things. The couple could have little suspected their specialty would one day earn them national attention.

“During the early days of the company, my dad was approached by two women from the local Hadassah Society who were planning a fundraiser,” said Susan Brust, senior vice president of Nordic Ware.

“They brought him a ceramic tube pan from Germany, which they called a ‘bund pan,’ and asked if he would produce a cast aluminum model they could sell. He and a close friend from his high school days designed a beautiful prototype with alternating large and small flutes, and a hole in the middle to evenly distribute heat. It delighted his clients.

“In their German accents, the women had added a -t sound to the end of ‘bund.’

That’s why my father chose to name and trademark his new product the Bundt® pan in 1950.

“We didn’t sell very many Bundt pans until a woman used one to bake the ‘Tunnel of Fudge’ cake which won second place in the 1966 Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest. That’s when people took notice, and what happened next changed our company forever.

Pillsbury introduced Bundt cake mixes, and demand for the Bundt pan exploded.

Our family business began producing pans as fast as we could.”

“The Bundt pan is no longer our biggest seller,” said Corrine Lynch, who is not only Susan’s sister and a member of the Nordic Ware board, but also a resident of Eden Prairie (the shining light of the greater Twin Cities metro area). “Today its sales account for only a small percentage of our business, as we offer nearly 500 products including bakeware, cookware, microwave and barbecue accessories, and many commercial kitchen accessories as well. But one thing which hasn’t changed

is the way we operate: Nordic Ware has always been a family business.

“I remember working for our parents’ company when I was young, packing shipments and helping our mom develop recipes in the kitchen. I became a taste tester at a very young age.

“My dad was always innovating. When microwave ovens first hit the market, he worked alongside the other engineers at our company to invent the Micro-GoRound® – the original rotating turntable for microwave ovens. It revolutionized the way people cooked around the country.

“My mom was no less instrumental to Nordic Ware’s success. She was brilliant at developing new recipes for our products and did much of our marketing. If you study the photos in Nordic Ware’s earliest catalogs, you’ll see my hands holding up several of our products. The whole family was involved in product photo shoots.

“Our family spirit carries over to every aspect of our business. Our employees tend to stay with us for a very long time. We’ve had multiple generations from many families spend their careers with us. We take care to run our business as sustainably as possible as well. Aluminum is recyclable, of course, so we’ve always recycled our scrap rather than throw it away. We also donate second quality items to local charities. We’ve been doing things this way for 75 years.”

“Dogs love you,” said Sondra Wentz, grooming salon leader at Petco’s pet care center in Chaska. “There’s nothing they don’t love about you. They’re happy to see you, happy to be with you. And I feel the same way about dogs.

Sondra loved dogs long before she had one of her own.

She spent many nights in her dog-less childhood home poring over the American Kennel Club encyclopedia, learning about the basenji’s ideal shoulder proportions and the German shepherd’s characteristic scissor bite.

If a neighbor brought home a new dog, they could count on Sondra to ring their doorbell within five minutes. And she was more than welcome, for she would walk anyone’s dog in exchange only for the dog’s company.

What does an inveterate dog lover do once they enter the workforce? Sondra went to the Petco in Eden Prairie to become a dog stylist.

“It’s my favorite thing ever,” said Sondra. “Helping dogs look and feel good is all I’ve ever done for a living, and it’s all I believe I’ll ever want to do. Petco’s fourmonth training program flew right by, which is when I learned how to bathe dogs, trim their nails, clean their ears, use the right shampoos and conditioners for each hair type, and even express their glands – a process I don’t imagine anyone wants to read about in a magazine. Every day was a little bit different with new breeds, routines and haircuts. That’s heaven, when you’re a dog lover like me.

“Dog grooming still feels fresh after so many years.

In a single day I might give an English springer spaniel a full shave-down, a standard poodle a lamb cut complete with big, fancy pom-poms, and an itchy old English bulldog a soothing oatmeal bath. Or I might just give a golden retriever a quick nail trim and brush the mats out of his fur.

“But if I’m really lucky, I’ll get a goldendoodle, whose light, fluffy hair makes the perfect canvas because you can do just about anything with it. An adventurous goldendoodle owner is my favorite kind of customer!

“Of course, some dogs don’t enjoy this as much as I do. That’s what two of the dog groomer’s greatest tools are for. A few treats are usually all it takes to convince a dog that you’re not trying to hurt them. (We ask the owners if treats are okay before administering them.) If a dog stays nervous, I pull out the big gun: baby talk. ‘Oh yes, aren’t you a good girl! Yes you are! Yes you are!’ That’s enough to make even the most skittish dogs start wagging their tails.

“One of the best parts of this job is watching the owners’ reactions to their ‘new’ dogs. They’re always so ecstatic to see them so nice and clean, with cute round faces and nothing stinky about them. Many of them also tell me they’re grateful for not having to vacuum so often.

“Cats? We certainly groom cats beautifully here at Petco, but I haven’t worked with one myself. It takes a special kind of person to groom an animal with less patience than a dog. I do know their stretchier skin makes a cat harder to shave, and that you definitely want to trim their nails first – before it occurs to the cat to use them.”
