It’s Going to be All Right

A close friend who knows about my law practice asked me, “What’s the most important thing you can tell someone who comes in to see you about a divorce?”

“Well, it depends, but generally speaking, I’d want them to know it’s going to be all right,” I said.

“Really? I mean, you don’t know much about them yet.”

“Well, I know this: when they talk to me, they’re living in an unbearable situation.

And it’s bad enough they’re talking to me about an Unknown--the divorce--that they’d rather not deal with.

“But the divorce itself will end some day, and probably soon. And after it’s over, that person will go on with their life.”

“The people who come to me know I do mostly Collaborative cases, where the couple have to agree on what happens before anything can happen. So, they each must give their spouse a reason to agree with them. More importantly, over the course of the case, they have many

opportunities to refine that conversation, discover what’s at the heart of their goals, and explore different ways of satisfying their spouse’s interests.

So, by the time they reach all their agreements, they have talked everything through--usually multiple times--and they have a plan they can live with. All the discussions were based on their actual situation, not some hypothetical. They’ve spoken with their lawyers; they understand what the courts can and can’t do.

If I’m talking to someone who just wants revenge on their spouse, I know that person will never succeed--either in a Collaborative case or in court. Because courts are not in the revenge business.

Someone who’s hurting that badly almost certainly will get more help from a therapist than a lawyer.

But for the client who is most interested in life after divorce, history teaches us, time and again, that it really will be all right.

Your brain has no processing center for pain. Signals are sent from the injured area to your brain that something is wrong and your brain decides if it is a real danger. Let’s say you are crossing the street, fall and break your ankle. You see a bus coming, which your brain perceives as a bigger threat. You run out of the way, not noticing your ankle. After you get to safety, the brain perceives the danger in your ankle and you feel pain.

Pain is based on your perceptions, emotions, previous experiences and those you’ve heard from others. Your brain determines if and how you perceive pain.

Many neuroscience experiments show the brain cannot tell the difference between what is real, and what is vividly imagined. Imaging equipment, like fmri’s, have shown that very similar areas of your brain that process thoughts (I think I’m moving my finger), also process the actual doing (I’m really moving my finger).

A study by Drs. Guang Yue and Kelly Cole looked at 2 groups over four weeks, one that exercised a finger, and one that imagined exercising the finger. In the end, the group that did the finger exercise had increased strength of 30%. The group that had only imagined exercising the finger had increased strength of 22%!

SINCE ITS INCEPTION AS A COMPANY IN 1978, LAND ROVER HAS BEEN A FLAGSHIP PRODUCT OF ENGLAND LEADING THE PACK IN BOTH LUXURY AND OFF-ROAD PROWESS. Land Rover predicted and started the large luxury SUV segment taking its off-road capabilities to the streets of London as the Range Rover, which has since become synonymous with success and affluence. Nine years later, in 1987, the Range Rover arrived in the U.S. and began traversing high-end neighborhoods and the occasional off-road trail for the more dedicated clientele.

Land Rover had the large luxury SUV segment cornered until the year 2000 when the SUV boom began in the U.S. During this time, Land Rover, like many others, began to produce SUVs to meet every buyer’s need whether it was a six-figure Range Rover or the entry-level SUV, the Discovery Sport. Creating a wider offering of vehicles, Land Rover was able to expand its client base as the smaller SUVs remain true to the Land Rover heritage as true Luxury vehicles that do not forget they also have purpose beyond shepherding their occupants to the country club.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport plays in the small luxury SUV segment against rivals like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, yet it is almost in a segment of its own as it offers versatility no others in the segment do. This great organization would not exist without this dedicated group whose sole purpose is giving back to those in need.

HOW CAN YOU HELP THE PROP SHOP? The organization is entirely self-funded, and cash donations are always appreciated. A great way to assist the effort would be as simple as looking in our closets and finding clothing items that have not been worn for some time and donating them. We are in spring cleaning season, so now would be a great time to “prune the closet.” Your donation will be appreciated and be put to good use helping a family in need.

DID YOU KNOW THAT IN 2016, WORLD PLASTIC PRODUCTION TOTALED AROUND 335 MILLION METRIC TONS, ACCORDING TO THE EARTH DAY NETWORK? Although you probably can’t singlehandedly change the environmental toll of the amount of plastic pollution that comes from that kind of number, we’ve rounded up a few simple ways you can curb your consumption and do your part toward a healthier environment.

01 PREHEAT your oven to its lowest setting.

02 CUT FABRIC into desired shapes. Using pinking shears so the fabric doesn’t fray, you can cut your fabric into any shape or size you’d like. Consider what size or

FOR REUSE, wash in cool water (you don’t want the wax to melt!) with mild dish soap and let air dry.
