inconvenient and treacherous, but it’s worth it. There’s nothing better than a Currier and Ives scene out my window. The key words here, though, are “out my window.” I particularly enjoy snow from the cozy confines of our house. I was brought up to love being outdoors. My dad grew up on a farm and my mom had a favorite wedge for splitting firewood. I had a fast sled and the figure skates of my childhood dreams. It was a short drive to the Colorado ski slopes from my Nebraska panhandle hometown and I’m spoiled about fresh powder. But the best thing in the Rockies is après ski. My Minnesotan snowshoes and hockey skates gather dust. I love snow because it’s picturesque. I don’t particularly like to be cold. Picture a fireplace, a cup of tea, a bulky throw and a sleepy dog by my feet. My wintry scene is less than poetic, though. The snowy ground is pristine for mere heartbeats

I’ll strap on my cleats for safety’s sake, don my jaunty beanie in a nod to sensible fashion, make sure my downfilled pockets are stocked with plastic bags and venture out. I'll brace for the windchill and remind myself that fresh air is good for us and puppies take naps after their walks.

TIPS FOR A FIT AND HEALTHY 2019

Curling Members of the “Odd Couples” group, a bunch of active Eden Prairie Swim team parents, get together once a month. They recently took a group curling lesson at Chaska’s Curling Center.

We asked Dr. Josie Runyan, DC at Vital Elements Healing Center, for winter health and exercise tips. IMMUNE SYSTEM AIDS "Odd Couple" curlers.

+ Echinacea/Elderflower tea. Tea is soothing for your throat, great for hydration, and helps your immune system fight stressors such as the common cold. + Naturally colorful meals. As a general health booster, meals that have a variety of natural color cover most bases for protective nutrients and help ensure your body has the building blocks to fight off anything winter throws at you. + Sleep.

Cross training and socializing Pam Reimer is a multisport athlete. She participates in a pickleball league, runs lots of races and is an avid skier. She provided pictures of her having active fun on the courts, courses and slopes with family and friends.

system gain the strength to fight off colds. Thirty minutes of “no tech” time before bed will help regulate your sleep cycle for a quality night’s rest. EXERCISE AND RECOVERY + Balanced workouts If you’re thinking of hitting the gym this winter, remember to work on muscle groups opposite each other, for example, biceps/triceps (front/back). Spend time focusing on upper body, front/ back then alternate a day of lower body, front/back. This strategy allows muscles to recover on “off” days and prevents muscular imbalances. + Balanced stretching Similar to balanced workouts, paying

attention to counter muscle groups when stretching prevents imbalances and injuries.

+ Dynamic workouts. Activities like pickleball, basketball or Zumba help maintain range of motion in joints, benefit the cardiovascular system and add fun to your fitness plan. Start Slowly! Many people over-do a new workout regimen initially. This can result in extreme soreness, acute injury, and often deters people from Pam Reiner and her pickle ball partner, Frank Klein.

THE SAME RESOLUTION, AGAIN? It’s that time of the year when people make resolutions. They are defined as a firm decision to do or not to do something. In chemistry, resolution is defined as the process of reducing or separating something into its components. Now we’re on to something! People star t out the year with good intentions to do something - lose weight, have a healthier lifestyle, quit smoking, not to worry so much, be more confident, get more sleep, study harder. But about three days later (this is why World Hypnotism Day is January 3rd), these resolutions have begun to fade away. Why is that? Perhaps this is where the chemistry definition comes into play. Have you thoroughly explored the reasons why this goal is impor tant to you? Have you examined what is driving your behavior to easily let it fade, only to be put on the list next year? What is it that is distracting you or preventing you from getting what you really want? Chances are the culprit is an emotion - they drive most all behaviors. All emotions are good - they are simply an indicator that you have a need or desire that isn’t being met and that you are out of alignment with what you really want or who you really are. The problem is that most people have a hard time figuring out exactly what that emotion is and how to satisfy it - especially if the problem has been on your list of resolutions for a long time. Emotions are all stored in the subconscious mind - everything in fact, that you’ve felt, experienced, tasted, smelled, seen. Hypnosis helps you discover what’s behind your behaviors by identifying the emotion and figuring out how it can be satisfied, then changing your perspective and your habits around the issue. Want to take back control over what’s on your resolution list? Let us show you how to reach your full potential today!

Minnesota music & M ex i c a n mountains MARTIN ZELLAR ON JUGGLING GIGS AND WORKOUTS

ARTICLE MARY FENSKE PHOTOGRAPHY DAVIN BRANDT

GETTING OR STAYING FIT ISN’T EASY FOR ANYONE. We’re all busy with work, family and an endless list of errands. Etching time out of a day for exercise doesn’t always happen. Eden Prairie Lifestyle had a chance to catch up with Martin Zellar, musician, podcaster, husband and dad. Zellar, once the frontman of Gear Daddies fame, now tours with his band, Martin Zellar and the Hardways. Fans of all ages go weak-kneed for his solo Neil! (Diamond) tribute sets, too. Martin, his wife and daughter reside in a mountain town in Mexico but spend a great deal of time visiting and performing in Minnesota. While maintaining a regular workout schedule isn’t in the cards for this 14

guy given his sometimes-crazy schedule, his lifestyle in Mexico lends itself to days of walking everywhere. In fact, the Zellars don’t own a car and easily get a minimum of five miles of walking in each day. He meets his 10,000-step goal without even trying. When Zellar is traveling, it’s tough to get those steps in, so he’s more thoughtful about getting to the gym for a workout. He’ll lift, run or hop on a machine, but that’s only when he’s got more time and not hoofing it around the walking city where he lives.

“ I ’ ve b e e n blessed with good genes and i f I fe e l l i ke I ’ ve l e t things slide, it doesn’t t a ke m e long to get things back i n l i n e .”

Zellar is a vegetarian, and Indian food is his go-to

favorite.

Finding

things to eat when touring is a challenge. “I am often leaving work at 1 a.m. or later and it’s hard to resist the urge to stop and pick up junk food,” said Zellar. If he starts to pick up extra weight, it’s usually after an extended time on the road and he’s quick to get back into his healthy lifestyle in the mountains. “I’ve been blessed with good genes and if I feel like I’ve let things slide, it doesn’t take me long to get

things back in line.” When asked if he played sports as a youngster in his hometown of Austin, he’s quick to say that while he played baseball and hockey early on, by the time he hit high school his band was performing most weekends and he didn’t have time for school sports. That said, he’s a die-hard Twins Fan. “Good or bad, the Minnesota Twins are near and dear to me.” Staying fit and managing a busy life isn’t easy. Martin Zellar has figured out a way to incorporate exercise into his everyday life patterns and when those patterns change due to work and travel, he adjusts to stay fit and ready for the limelight.

Miso is a paste made from soybeans and fermented rice or barley. It is high in beneficial bacteria, which promotes a healthy gut. It has numerous uses in healthy cooking. I am using it here as a glaze for the fish. Wonderful served with a side of sautéed greens.

INGREDIENTS + 2 Tbsp. miso paste (I prefer the sweet tasting brown rice miso for this recipe) + 2 Tbsp. low-sodium Tamari soy sauce + 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil + 1 Tbsp. raw honey + 1-1½ pound salmon fillet

Vegetarian Bean Chili

I like to think of beans as “artery scrubbing,” because they help to lower cholesterol. They have a lot of other health benefits including keeping blood pressure normal and blood sugars steady. Feel free to vary ingredients. Serves 6-8.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees 2. In a small bowl, combine the miso paste, soy sauce, oil and honey. 3. Place salmon in a baking pan brushed with olive oil or on parchment paper. Brush salmon with glaze (you may not need all of it). Bake for about 12-15 minutes or until fish is cooked through. (Generally, cook fish ten minutes for every one inch of thickness). This is also great grilled on direct medium heat for about 10-15 minutes!

TRAVEL DESTINATION Copenhagen. The iconic harbor scene at Nyhavn.

bringing hygge home WINTER SURVIVAL WISDOM FROM DENMARK

ARTICLE MADDIE RENNEKE

WHILE MOST PEOPLE DREAM OF WARMER WEATHER WHEN JANUARY COMES AROUND, I’M MISSING A CHILLY, DARK ENVIRONMENT NOT TOO DIFFERENT FROM OUR OWN. Rather than opting for a beachside getaway, I’m reminiscing about one by candlelight. I would take the 3 p.m. sunset over a sunburn any day if it meant I was cuddling up for a hyggeligt Scandinavian evening. I had the unique opportunity to study abroad twice when I was in college. I spent the spring of 2016 in Copenhagen, Denmark and the month of January 2017 in Stockholm, Sweden. These experiences were very different from one another. I was studying in Copenhagen and working in Stockholm, and I had to adapt to local cultures each time; I only got a month in Stockholm and spent a full semester in Copenhagen. My experiences in both places were wonderful, enlightening and meaningful. They were also dark and cold. Enter “hygge.” It’s a Danish term that doesn’t translate well to English, but it is often explained as being cozy, merry, or a combination of the two. To me, hygge is a good laugh with my family during dinner, cuddling up under a big warm blanket to watch a movie with my boyfriend, or even lounging on my couch writing this article next to my tiny Christmas tree, 22

listening to my clock tick and candles flicker. To my host sister in Copenhagen, hygge was watching Netflix. It’s really more about the feeling it creates than the activity itself. I reflect on hygge as a warm and lovely tradition, but I believe it to be more of a coping mechanism than anything else. Denmark isn’t excessively cold - it’s no Eden Prairie, Minnesota, anyway. But it's rainy and dark, and they don’t have the warmest of summers to look forward to. Hygge is the way the Danes keep warm and keep their status as some of the world’s happiest people. We talked about hygge a lot when I was in Copenhagen. We learned about it in classes, we participated in it, we blogged for our travel writing classes about it, my American friends and I mentioned it in Instagram captions once a month or so, and we promised ourselves we wouldn’t forget it when we came home.

Mayo Clinic Guide to Stress-Free Living by Amit Sood A few years ago, I was driving and heard an interview with Dr. Amit Sood. I stopped by a bookstore on the way home and purchased his book. Based on the popular stress management program he developed and offers at the Mayo Clinic, Soot fills this guide with stories, easy-to-understand science and practical steps towards achieving greater peace for you and those around you. Protecting Your

BUSINESS The most important fact in the life of a business owner of any size is to generate profit. Profit ensures the future of the enterprise. Another critical fact is effectively protecting the business. Commercial Insurance is one of the most important investments a company can make. Good commercial insurance will protect a company from severe financial loss and can be the difference between going under and staying and growing for the long term. Commercial insurance protects a business from losses such as property damage, theft, liability and employee injury. Other areas critical to protect a business and should be

a major consideration are Workers comp claims, 1099 employees and professional liability. An example of commercial insurance would be the Restaurant industry. Quality coverage can protect a restaurant from things like mechanical shutdowns, loss of open hours for any number of reasons, unforeseen employee actions causing costly liabilities. Every business category has its respective danger areas. A close examination of ones business category and the potential risks and pitfalls is well in order as a standard procedure as a best practice. Any business that has suffered an unforeseen happening will tell you

that working with a knowledgeable commercial insurance agent who understands their business category and critical need is well worth the investment. David Freeland of Farmers Insurance is the Eden Prairie and surrounding areas expert in the commercial insurance field. It may be well worth the effort to contact David Freeland for a close examination of areas that will protect your business now and in the future. You can contact David Freeland your local Farmers Insurance expert at 952-893-9443.
