NATURAL HEALING, ONE DROP AT A TIME

O
kay, guys, do you know that essential oils are great for MEN? Most of you probably have heard the ladies in your lives talking about essential oils and how amazing they are. Perhaps some aromatic and fragrant essential oils have even made their way into your home. But, did you know the health benefits of essential oils are vast and that several of the oils carry neutral or masculine scents?
Which Essential Oils ARE MEN’S FAVORITES? FRANKINCENSE:

to keep on hand.
Essential oils are plant-based medicine. The oils are derived from seeds, rind, leaves, flowers and barks of plants found all over the world. The oils are extracted from the plants and distilled into amazing essential oils that can provide health benefits for a wide variety of health concerns. Essential oils can be used to assist with workout recovery and provide relief to tired muscles. They can also tame skin irritations caused by shaving, offer relief from digestive issues, soothe away headaches, alleviate symptoms of allergies or a stuffy nose. This list goes on and on. Essential oils are truly gifts from the earth and because they are made from plant compounds, our bodies intuitively know how to utilize them for our benefit. QUALITY IS CRITICAL
There are many companies that sell essential oils, and not all brands are pure, high-quality essential oils. I encourage you to do your own research to determine which brand to purchase. After all, you will be using these wonderful oils to overcome various health concerns, so be sure you are using a brand that is 100% pure and has no chemical additives (which may negate any benefits).

respiratory concerns.
A couple of years ago, when I first purchased several essential oils, my husband laughed and rolled his eyes. He assumed the oils were just a waste of money. It didn’t take long for him to change his opinion! The first thing he noticed was the fact that the oils didn’t smell like chemical-laden perfumes. The next thing he noted was that I received nearly immediate health benefits from the various oils I tried. Observing all of this, it wasn’t long before he started asking questions about what each oil was used for. Within a few weeks, he started using essential oils himself—and he tells everyone he knows about how amazing they are (like he discovered them)! Now, essential oils are the first thing either of us turns to for aches and pains, stuffy noses, digestive issues, etc. My skeptical husband was easily converted into regular oil user—maybe you should give it a whirl and find out for yourself the remarkable benefits of essential oils!

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | June 2017
“C
ome on, Jay. Don’t embarrass yourself.” As if on a continuous loop, this thought kept running through my mind as I timidly lined up my tee shot on the first hole at the recently remodeled Olympic Hills Golf Club on an early-spring Friday morning. My internal monologue was not always this bleak when it came to golf. But times and circumstances change. You see, until recently, golf had always played a significant role in my life. My earliest golf memories involved trips to a local park with my late father when I was about 6 years old. He would patiently stand there and watch me hit balls with an old set of clubs he had cut down to size upon which he had used a mixture of green athletic tape and duct tape to fashion grips. I continued to play throughout my childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood and cherish all the friendships formed and life-lessons learned through the game of golf. Following graduate school, my wife and I relocated from Southern California to Minnesota. Starting a new job, discovering all the Twin Cities had to offer, and contending with seasonal restrictions cut into golf time. The ensuing years brought with them several
exciting changes, namely the purchase of our first home, the birth of our children, and moving from the city to the suburbs. It was also during this time that I made the calculated decision to leave my career as a forensic psychologist and venture into the world of real estate. While these changes have proved to be both wonderful and fulfilling, they also really cut into golf time. In the last 5 years, I have swung a golf club on two occasions. However, now that my kids are a little older (4 and 2 years old) and I have established a foundation in my real estate career, I have been pining for an opportunity/excuse/divine intervention to get back into the sport. As fate would have it, Eden Prairie Lifestyle Magazine intervened. Namely, Andy Stavast, the publisher of the Magazine, asked if I would be interested in writing a story about golf at the Olympic Hills Golf Club. I told him my history with the sport and that I would be thrilled to take on the assignment. After chatting for a bit longer, we decided that an article about reconnecting with the game would be interesting. But the article would require one critical component – a round of golf by the author. As a Realtor with CONTINUED >

RECONNECTING (CON TI N U ED)
the Eden Prairie office of Edina Realty, I have heard numerous accolades from friends, colleagues, and clients about the course at Olympic Hills Golf Club. So, when Andy made arrangements for a tee time with his friends at Olympic Hills, I was elated. On (the) Friday morning, I arrived at Olympic Hills Golf Club. I was greeted by Andy and Peter Eaton along with a number of most welcoming staff members. During my warm-up on the range, I quickly realized that a 5-year golf hiatus was going to provide for a very interesting round of golf. Gone were my aspirations of shooting a “respectable” round. I was now desperately clinging to the hope that I could complete a round of golf with 3 strangers (who quickly became friends) without embarrassing myself. Following the warm-up, I was introduced to my partners for the day: Adam Sklader, Tom Berg. Peter Eaton joined us to round out the foursome. After some brief introductions, we were off. Adam, Tom, and Peter are all current members of the club. Peter has been a member since 1989, while Adam and Tom are both newer members. On the first tee box, each of these gentlemen hit impressively long drives down the center of the fairway. Then it was my turn. Consciously trying to push my nervous thoughts to the back of my mind, I lined up my shot and tried my best to put a smooth and easy swing on the ball, but sliced it into the rough off the right side of the fairway. Not ideal, but I made solid contact! After getting over my first-hole-jitters, I was actually able to process the scenery around me. The course is beautiful, even in the early part of spring during which time courses all over the region are still waiting for much of the course vegetation to fully blossom. Several of the holes run along wetlands, which served as a majestic frame for the picturesque fairways and undulating greens. As we played, the pride that each of my golfmates feels for the course became apparent. They discussed how they enjoy the challenging layout of the course, but appreciate that the wide fairways make the course approachable for less experienced golfers. One of the most striking features of the course is the greens. Even after a long hiatus from the 18

game, I immediately realized that the greens at Olympic Hills are fast – some of the fastest that I have ever played on. Moreover, several of the greens were characterized by dramatic undulations and tiers – straight puts were a rarity. During his tenure as a member at Olympic Hills, Peter has assumed an operational role and was very knowledgeable of the changes that had been made to the course during the major remodeling that was completed in the last several years. As our group walked the course, Peter highlighted several of these changes and discussed some of the innovative methods that are being used to maintain the course, such employing use of solid-tine in lieu of core aerification methods for maintenance of greens and fairways. Others seem to have taken notice of the impressive changes at Olympic Hills too, as Olympic Hills will be hosting an upcoming NCAA Collegiate Golf Event this fall hosted by golf great Annika Sorenstam. As our round played on, I found myself becoming less and less concerned about my performance (which continued to be pretty poor) and more focused on what I believe to be one of the most important components of golf: spending quality time with people. Adam, Tom, and Peter could not have been kinder and more welcoming. As we played, everyone seemed to enjoy basking in the joy of each other’s successes, occasionally mocking misfortune, and cracking jokes. We even added two members to our group along the way – Nick Oprish joined the group at the 11th hole and we added another Tom Groom on 16. Just like their Olympic Hills brethren, Nick and Tom were great guys as well. On one of the later holes on the course, Tom even invited us into his home that was nestled near to the green for a drink. After we finished the round, I was filled with gratitude not only for the opportunity to play a round of golf on a spectacular course but also for the hospitality that was extended by the gentlemen that hosted me. The experience reconnected me with a game that I love and has also motivated me to start introducing the game to my own children. Thanks again to Olympic Hills Golf Club and everyone I played with. Hope to see you out on the course soon. June 2017 | Eden Prairie Lifestyle

ow many of you have started a hobby that initially only required a minimal financial investment, only to see it slowly eat away at your retirement portfolio? That special golf club, the first of many, to add to your bag? The newest camera with the most features, many of which you may never use? Well, if your New Year’s resolution was to keep those discretionary dollars for junior’s college fund, you may want to stop reading. If, however, you enjoy the taste of perfectly smoked pulled pork or the aroma of smoked turkey, I may have the newest way to keep your wallet, if not your waist, thin: smoking your own meat. My addiction, I mean hobby, started when my employer gave me the opportunity to choose a gift in appreciation of my years of service. I was given the link to a catalog of gifts from which I could choose an item. Most of the items held no interest for me (cocktail glasses with my employer’s logo? Really?) but then, as I scrolled down the page, there it was. A small wood smoker. It looked like a stripped down R2D2. And it was shiny. Wow, smoking my own meat; a lifetime desire that I had only just become aware of. I enjoy cooking and baking, and have done a
few turkeys on our gas grill for Thanksgiving (wearing an oven mitt for warmth while sliding across a snow covered deck to check on the bird is true dedication) Without hesitation, or much thought, I ordered the smoker. While waiting for it to be delivered, it dawned on me that I probably should read up on how to use a smoker. Mine is what is known as a water smoker. I soon wondered if I had perhaps been a bit rash in choosing this new hobby. Using a smoker, especially a wood burning one, requires a lot of time and work. Low and Slow is the battle cry of those who smoke their own meats. Low heat, maintained for hours… sometimes many hours, is a basic requirement. You don’t want to quickly bake the roast or chops; you want the smoke to have sufficient time to slowly develop, cue the flourishing trumpets, the holy grail of smoked meats: the smoke ring. That slightly reddish layer of meat on the exterior surfaces of whatever you are smoking. The goal is to avoid making jerky or to have a cut of meat that tastes like the bottom of a grill. The end results can be very rewarding, but when your Saturday afternoon is spent tending the firebox and all you end up with is a CONTINUED >

dry, tough, the-only-flavor-is-smoke end product, well, those days of shivering by the gas weber as it held a constant temperature with the mere twist of the controls and then bringing a big, bronzed, beautiful turkey to the supper table look a lot better. I quickly realized that I have neither the patience nor the skill to maintain a constant temperature while using wood or charcoal to create the heat and smoke for the smoker. I committed what many, if not most, hardcore folks who smoke meat consider a sin; I converted my wood fired smoker to an electric one. You add small amounts of soaked wood, such as hickory or cherry, to an electric element that replaces the wood or charcoal that is normally used. The cost was minimal, and it would keep the smoker from gathering dust in the garage. Sadly, I soon learned that my ‘updated’ electric smoker, while definitely slow, was way too low. If I used it on a day when the ambient temperature was under 80, I had trouble keeping the temperature in the desired 220-240 range. This is a hobby; a past time; not a mandate to work around a hot smoker for hours in the heat of a balmy Minnesota July 4th.
It was at this time that I fondly recalled how easy it was to control the heat of my gas grill. I ordered a special adaptor that would allow me to convert my smoker to an LP gas one. The cost was not that great, and I had gone too far to turn back now. While smoker purists reading this are no doubt in tears by now, I have been able to create some mighty tasty smoked meats with my gas fired smoker. Set it and forget it. Well, come to think of it, you don’t want to forget it. Even Slow and Low will result in leather if you allow the internal temp of the meat to get too high for too long. What I need is a remote temperature probe; I can sit on the deck under the umbrella while the smoker smokes away in the back corner of the yard. (My one serious piece of advice: don’t use your smoker on your deck) With a remote sensor, I can set it to chime when the temp is ‘just right’. I recently saw one for only $245.00. But to justify that cost, I really should abandon my ‘starter’ smoker and look into a larger model that can handle a side of beef. And then, once I am ready for the competitive circuit, a trailer to mount it on. And a truck to pull it. Yes, nothing like a little hobby; smoking meats and burning up cash.

T
he 10,000 lakes have thawed, and it’s time for your style
to follow suit. We all need a few reminders after essentially dressing for survival all winter (and most of spring, if we’re being honest). Allow us to jumpstart your summer wardrobe inspiration! Find one standout piece that you can wear repeatedly all season.
Summer is social. It’s the time for dressing to be photographed, and a signature piece will consistently make you a centerpiece. If you cop a bold statement item early in the season, you can spend the entire summer imbuing it with memories. It might sound silly now, but come winter you’ll be able to look back fondly on an entire season of photos of you in your summer-2017-defining look. It’ll keep you warm, we promise. Nostalgia still reigns supreme, and the 90s trends we saw all winter will likely continue throughout this summer. You don’t have to go full 90210 to capitalize on the trend. Wear modern fits in throwback colors, or consider revisiting brands you might not have worn in a while. Many beloved 90s names are putting out affordable collections aimed at an audience who didn’t get to enjoy similar looks in their heyday. Looking for absolute authenticity? Scout out vintage or thrift shops for inexpensive pieces your friends won’t have. Swimwear options are limited for men, so don’t be afraid to wear a secondhand swimsuit in the name of individuality— just wash it first. If you’re a fan of the layered look, there’s no reason to stop when the weather warms up. Layering makes for great transitional outfits at the beginning and end of the season. Go for thinner fabrics or denim. Let those heavy flannels rest. Think of a button-down shirt as a light jacket. You can always tie it around your waist later if things really heat up. Pair with a baseball cap for a look that can transition throughout the day. Layering in the summer works well in Minnesota where we often end up altering our outfits throughout the day as the weather changes. It makes sense to wear long sleeves with shorts here, don’t let someone tell you otherwise. You may also wear sandals with pants—as long as they are not flip flops. “Seasonally appropriate” is a relative term in the Midwest. Are you partial to wearing darker colors? You can keep your fifty shades of black and still fit in at the beach. Just look for patterns in darker tones that still tap into that warm-weather whimsy. If you’re wearing solid dark colors, choose airy fabrics to avoid overheating. Do try some color if you dare. Brighter colors go with blue skies, and pastels can be dressed up or down to fit your mood. Winter was full of heavy, clunky fabrics and garments. Take this time to dress lightly while you can, and above all have fun with it. Use the summer to wear what you want—not what you have to.

Parting Thoughts
Minnesota Monarchs D
ARTICLE KELLY LORENZ id you know that Minnesota’s state butterfly is the Monarch? The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), also known as the milkweed butterfly, was
adopted as the state’s official butterfly in 2000. Because of its size and colorful markings, it is hard to miss in backyards, parks, and rural areas. The life cycle of the monarch is fascinating. We see as many as three to four overlapping generations throughout May to October in Minnesota.
Each generation lives approximately four weeks with the exception of the last of the season. As many as 50 million, which also include our Minnesota Monarchs, migrate south to central Mexico for the winter in a state of semi-hibernation from November to March. In the spring, Minnesota monarchs that have wintered in Mexico, fly north laying eggs on milkweed plants there or in southern states. Then the adult dies, one month later, the young butterflies head to Minnesota. Mature caterpillars of the first generation are found in Minnesota around mid to late June and hatch in July. The second generation appears by mid-August. According to Karen Oberhauser, director of the University of Minnesota’s Monarch Lab: “If you spot eggs, they typically hatch within three to six days depending on the weather. The iconic yellow-, white- and black-striped caterpillars spend nine to 14 days making their way across the milkweed, eating, growing and shedding their skin about five times to fit their growing size. The final step is the green chrysalis, which protectively blends in with leaves, keeping the creature safe for the 8- to 14-day transformation into a butterfly. When the colors are really vivid, they’re ready to come out", Oberhauser said. "The just-hatched butterflies break the chrysalis open using their legs for leverage and carefully emerge. It can take four to six minutes for wings to expand and four to six hours before they’re ready to fly." Want to attract, encourage the Monarch butterfly population? It is fun and easy to create and incorporate a butterfly garden in a new or existing garden space. Here is a step by step plan to get you started to create a garden that will support all stages of the monarch’s lifecycle: Firstly, most butterfly plants prefer soil that is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Compost is a great amendment that will enrich the soil to successfully grow butterfly plants. It is then important to know the types of plants that will attract butterflies, choose plants that require full sun to part sun and work best for your garden space. Also, ensure that your butterfly garden has little to no wind. Lastly, be sure there is an absence of herbicides in your garden so the butterflies may stay strong and thrive. The adult monarchs use its long straw-like mouth to consume nectar from a variety of flowering plants. Some of these plants include perennials such as asters, bee balm, butterfly weed, chrysanthemums, daisies, live forever, purple coneflower, sedum, and yarrow. Annuals, like coneflowers, impatiens, marigolds, phlox, sunflower, and verbena. And wildflowers, including Black-eyed Susan, butterfly flower, coreopsis, and ox-eye daisy. To learn more about monarchs, visit The University of Minnesota’s Citizen Watch program (mlmp.org) where volunteers monitor milkweed for larva at more than 900 sites across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
