here are very few things that I am as passionate about than the support and recognition of women. I find myself being inspired by both women I personally know and those I do not know on a daily basis. Many of these empowering women that I have the pleasure of looking up to are ones I have met through Eden Prairie Lifestyle. I have come to learn that to be a powerful woman, one does not need to solely be an activist for women’s rights, but can be influencing the people around them in many different ways. In celebration of the incredible women of Eden Prairie, we decided to host our first annual Eden Prairie Lifestyle Women of Substance award celebration. A group of powerful local women was selected to join us for a night of well-deserved recognition. The league of women consisted of those that work in the medical field, small businesses owners, activists, non-profit members, government officials, and school board members. I can't begin to describe the intimidation and inspiration I felt in that room. Although these women were all being honored for different reasons, a thread of commonalities string between each of them. Their passions and drive are palpable, they each lack the fear to fight for what they believe in, and all carry their kindness in every action they take. We are extremely lucky to have these women in our community. While putting together this issue I began reflecting on the fantastic women in my own life that I take for granted, most importantly my mother. The courage she has to always be herself is beyond admirable and has truly shaped who I am today. Happy Mother’s Day to all the fantastic mother figures of Eden Prairie.

GARDENING t o Improve your Healt h W
hen you think of the word gardening, do you cringe or start dreaming of digging in the dirt? Perhaps your answer depends upon your definition of gardening.
WHAT IS A GARDEN?
Webster’s dictionary defines a garden as: 1a: a plot of ground where herbs, fruits, flowers, or vegetables are cultivated b: a rich well-cultivated region c: a container (as a window box) planted with usually a variety of small plants In general, any work done in your yard constitutes as gardening and is not limited to a vegetable garden. Though definitions and feelings about gardening vary between people, the benefits remain the same. These benefits can be grouped into three general categories: Beautification, Physical Health, and Spiritual Health. BEAUTIFICATION
Touches of color from plants are eye-catching and add drama to bland outdoor spaces. An array of leafy shades of green accented with vibrant blooms around your house can soften its edges and help “nestle” it into the site. The architectural style of your home can also be complemented and enhanced through proper design of pathways, retaining walls and bed lines. Adding any of these elements into your landscape will increase the value of the property and create a welcoming feeling for you and your guests. Even during winter, the texture and shadows from your landscaping are beautiful to behold. PHYSICAL HEALTH
Spending time in a garden has been found to help reduce stress and anxiety in those that partake in this outdoor activity on a regular basis. Keeping active in the yard helps you burn more calories, increases your strength and dexterity while improving your heart health. Eating clean and healthy fruits and vegetables also help improve heart health. Harvesting the bounty of your efforts and enjoying the freshest food possible rewards your body and spirit with healthy eating and self-satisfaction. A stress-free day spent working in the garden may also help you to fall asleep more quickly and give you dream-filled sleep. Just imagine the sweet dreams of you and your family enjoying your beautiful yard! SPIRITUAL HEALTH
Time in the garden can be relaxing, restorative and balancing. Occasionally, caring for the yard may seem a bit overwhelming but once the chores are accomplished, you can sit back and enjoy the singing birds while a gentle breeze cools your brow. Being in the midst of a garden calms the soul. Sharing the joys and beauty of a garden with other people can also improve those relationships. Compassion for plants flows into more compassion for people and we can all use a little more compassion from time to time. Sharing your gardening successes enhances self-satisfaction, gives deeper meaning to your existence on earth and it causes a sense of gratitude. www.themustardseed.com

LOCAL WOMEN
INSPIRE TRAVELERS ARTICLE NANCY RENNEKE

ou may think you’re a savvy traveler. Lots of us have put a toe in all 50 states, toured abroad, logged lots of business miles and enjoyed exotic beach vacations. But three local women make most of us look like it’s our first time on an airplane. They’re innovators and all of them are inspired by helping people. These three intrepid women share a love for globe trotting, but their motivations fuel uniquely notable roles in the local travel scene. A COMMITMENT TO SAFE TRAVEL

Sheryl Hill is turning tragedy into power. Her teenaged son died while he was exploring the world on a study abroad trip. Ten years later, she’s still devastated, but instead of telling kids to stay home, works to keep other moms’ children safe. After her son died, she didn’t miss a beat in providing a host home to kids from other countries. She also worked as an advocate for students enrolled in study abroad programs. She’s now the founder and Executive Director of a non-profit organization called Depart Smart. Depart Smart’s mission is to inform and prepare people to see the world safely. Sheryl knows the statistics and wants people to know that the $7 trillion travel industry sometimes sweeps touring pitfalls under the rug and offers limited consumer protection. Sheryl’s inspiration is rooted in motherhood and she’s determined to keep kids safe, but everything she and Depart Smart teach young travelers applies to all travelers. While some of us forget to carry Purell in our purses, Sheryl always packs a door jamb (your Airbnb host has a key) and a smoke detector (other countries lack OSHA standards) in her suitcase. It’s important to understand, though, that she isn’t afraid to travel. She’s adventurous and wants other people to explore the world. She empowers travelers with the information they need to identify and
mitigate risk, and return home safely. Sheryl wants to, “wrap the ones we love in safety arms so they can have adventures and come home to us.” Depart Smart is hosting its sixth annual Around the World Safely event on May 18. More information about its advocacy and on-line travel safety course is available at departsmart.org. MAKING ADVENTURE TRAVEL POSSIBLE FOR SENIORS
Carol Giuliani loves old people. She’s enthralled with how all the decades they’ve lived affect their view of the world. Carol is also a travel expert. She’s been everywhere from Leech Lake to Dubai and she adroitly taps into local resources for both fun and health care. Carol – through her business, Senior Travel Companion Services – plans itineraries and accompanies seniors on travel adventures. Carol says that most elderly people feel like the world is too fastpaced. When seniors travel with her, she focuses on making the experience about them. She says the elderly just want to be treated like everyone else in spite of any physical handicaps they might face. “It’s an honor to be in any moment with them. I like moving at their pace.” Flexibility is key, because “anything can happen,” with seniors’ health or the unknowns that come with any vacation. Carol creates happy memories for seniors with her unique business. She possesses a knack for finding fun, a wealth of travel knowledge, a nose for finding a good deal, an ability to manage head-spinning logistics, an unrivaled sense of humor and resourcefulness to spare. She’s unfazed by being responsible for an elderly person’s welfare on a vacation. Most of all, though, Carol loves old people. And that’s what makes these trips magical for her clients. Carol also specializes in helping elderly clients relocate to live closer to their families and accompanies seniors to events like graduations and weddings. Visit her website at SeniorTravelCompanionServices.com to learn more. MEDICAL TRAVEL WITH 5-STAR CONCIERGE SERVICE
Maria Moldanado is literally a woman of the world. She was born in Spain and educated in both America and England. She speaks four languages fluently. She worked as a concierge in a demanding five-star hotel environment to help fund her college years and worked at both U.S. and European headquarters for Starkey Hearing along the way. She first learned about people traveling to foreign countries for medical procedures when doing research for Google Health in the U.K. Now she’s an Eden Prairie resident who has found a way to merge her affinity for health care with her travel expertise and her knack for juggling logistics through her medical travel company. As the founder and CEO of Trip4Care, Maria manages all the intricacies of both the itineraries and medical plans for her clients. The concept of medical travel is new to some of us. Lots of Minnesotans grew up knowing people who traveled from other states to visit the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (or noticed that the patient down the hall at Mayo was from a far-away country). But it’s surprising to many Americans that there are hospitals all over the world that are renowned for their quality of care and “best CONTINUED > practice” areas of expertise. LOCAL WOMEN INSPIRE TRAVELERS (CON TI N U ED)
Co-pays can be extremely high for routine procedures like knee replacement on some plans and other procedures may not be covered at all. Some people travel for a second opinion when there’s only one local doctor with the expertise required for their situation. According to Maria, Trip4Care matches patients with the right doctor in the right location so they get the best treatment, often at a lower cost. Certified by the Medical Tourism Association, Maria has developed relationships with doctors and hospitals specializing in a myriad of procedures across the globe. She’s well-versed in both medical systems and international travel. Her criteria for choosing hospitals is rigorous. She tracks infection rates, complication rates and outcomes. She only chooses facilities with international certifications and has visited all the hospitals she recommends. Unlike medical care in the United States, doctors’ and hospital fees can often be negotiated. Maria negotiates every facet of medical travel for her clients. Her quotes are all-inclusive for procedures, medicines, follow-up doctor visits, hotels and airlines. Many of her clients want to bring a spouse or friend with them. One double-knee replacement client who would have had a $40,000 co-pay at home, flew first class with his wife, saw Columbia for the first time, recuperated in a resort and still saved $14,000. Maria also provides help with obtaining medical files from patients’ local healthcare providers and communicating between foreign doctors and rehab teams back at home. Maria exudes confidence and competence. She also glows when she talks about how she helped a young couple conceive a child through IVF in Europe. She is motivated by the thrill of helping people find the ideal plan for the best medical care in the world, visiting a new place and learning about its people. She helps clients find health and happiness through medical travel. Learn more about medical travel and Maria at trip4care.com. 18

WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE (CON TI N U ED)
WHAT DRIVES YOUR PASSION?
My religion. As a Muslim, I believe the message of Islam deserves a better reputation. As a practicing Muslim, I find a lot of comfort in the teachings and it breaks my heart to see it being spoken about negatively in the media. It is also an obligation to clarify anything that hinders a proper understanding of the religion. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE EDEN PRAIRIE COMMUNITY?
I love everything from the people to the activities and how they are focused on families and kids. I also love the diversity. We were at the mall recently and my children pointed out a painting of a girl wearing a hijab. It’s beautiful to see this type of diversity represented in our city. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE?
I believe every woman is of substance, regardless of whether she’s acknowledged for it or not. Every single woman who raises children to be outspoken, inclusive, leaders has substance. Our country is focused a lot on working women, but the women who are raising the next generation are the heroes behind the spotlight. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED BECAUSE OF YOUR GENDER?
I have faced challenges because I am a Muslim woman more than simply a woman. There is a lot of fear, specifically for
HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATE, AND RECIPIENT OF THE 2016 EDEN PRAIRIE HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
veiled Muslim women. It’s a struggle because I can be called a world class peacekeeper by the Star Tribune, yet when I go to the supermarket, I’m a suspect. That makes me weary of my surroundings, when all I want to do is be a neighbor and a resident like everyone else.

FAMILY PRACTICE NURSE AT PARK NICOLLET EDEN PRAIRIE With an extraordinary amount of empathy and compassion, Jan touches the lives of her patients every day. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
I’m most passionate about people. I have a genuine interest in hearing their stories. I am privileged enough to see people in hardest and happiest times of their lives. It’s great that I can be of service to them, but I get just as much back for myself. WHAT DRIVES THAT PASSION?
My Dad was a great example of how to treat other people. It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from, he was always kind to others. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE?
A woman who thinks outside themselves and intuitively recognizes the needs of others. Sometimes it’s a phone call or bringing a dinner over, but always thinking about others. They are looking to make all of us better, not just themselves. WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FEMALE ROLE MODELS?
My friend, Robin Petrich. She is the total package. She’s incredibly intelligent, warm, kind, and extremely genuine in the way she cares about others. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG GIRLS IN EDEN PRAIRIE?
Don’t worry about everyone else and know who you are. Have confidence in yourself and ignore all the outside pressures that are so often put on girls today.
ADVOCATE FOR DISABILITY AWARENESS Marcia has worked tirelessly as an advocate and voice for children and adults living with disabilities. She works with state and local elected officials to bring attention to their unique needs. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?

WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE (CON TI N U ED)
EDEN PRAIRIE MAYOR AND ACTIVE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER Nancy is passionate about the sustainability efforts in the community. Since the 20-40-15 initiative started in 2006, the city has made great strides in reducing the consumption of fuel and energy by city owned vehicles and facilities. The next step is to spread this message out in the community. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE EDEN PRAIRIE COMMUNITY?
I like the diversity. The socio-economic and racial diversity make us a unique suburb, which makes the community so much richer. It also exposes our students to the wonderful diversity of the world, which is so important. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE?
Someone who is passionate about what they’re doing, passionate about the community, eager to help, willing to look for solutions to problems and has the tenacity to stick with it. I think there are a lot of women of substance out there, not just the ones being recognized today. HOW CAN WOMEN POSITIVELY IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY?
There are so many ways that women help. There are all sorts of volunteer organizations right here in Eden Prairie that can always use help like PROP, Let’s Go Fishing, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Eden Prairie Reads. There are just so many ways people can choose to get involved, they just have to make the choice and commit to it. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED IN YOUR FIELD BECAUSE OF YOUR GENDER?
I think it’s actually an advantage at the local government level. If you look at voting statistics, more women vote than men. Women tend to value balance and take the time to learn about the issues before voting. They wield a lot of power. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG GIRLS IN EDEN PRAIRIE?
Get involved in your community and find out what’s going on. Find something you’re passionate about and share it with others. When it’s something you care about, that’s where you’re going to make the most impact. 24

CAREER FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL AND ACTIVE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER Ranee is currently an Eden Prairie School Board Member, Eden Prairie Community Foundation Board Member, and member of the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Committee. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
I’m most passionate about being involved in things locally. A lot of people underestimate how important that is. It’s easy to get caught up in our busy lives and forget about what’s going on around you. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE EDEN PRAIRIE COMMUNITY?
Even though it’s large in size, it’s still a small community. The people are very friendly and incredibly involved. It’s such a nice place to live and raise a family. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE?
A woman who looks outside of themselves and gives back in a meaningful way. Someone who is there for other people and makes a heartfelt commitment to giving their time and energy to others. HOW CAN WOMEN POSITIVELY IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY?
Women positively impact our community every day just by being moms, grandmas, teachers, and business owners. Eden Prairie, more than anywhere else I know, has so many women who professionally and personally give back to our community. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG GIRLS IN EDEN PRAIRIE?
Always be true to yourself. Always be willing to put yourself out there, because you’ll miss so many opportunities if you don’t. Be confident in who you are and don’t let anyone tell you can’t do something.
SMALL BUSINESS OWNER AND ACTIVE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER Mary has been on the Eden Prairie Community Foundation Board for the past eight years. She was the chair for the Eden Prairie Community Foundation gala, EP Gives, held last month. The Eden Prairie Community Foundation has given more than 1.6 million dollars in grants to local non-profits and service organizations. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?

5 FOODS Most of us know how to construct a healthy diet, including both the trending superfoods and the old standbys. With long days to defeat, careers to conquer and families to feed, it only makes sense that women tend to arm themselves with knowledge and nutrients. But some foods have nutrition profiles that are especially beneficial to women’s health. Here are five foods that are particularly good at providing the necessities for a healthy female form.
WALNUTS Walnuts, the tree nut that’s just as good
caramelized and candied or tossed with cranberries on a salad, are antioxidant superstars. Vitamin E, specifically, can be found in spades in walnuts and has been found to reduce the risk of breast cancer. In fact, walnuts work double time; the omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts pair with phytosterols, a molecule similar to cholesterol, and have potential to slow and reduce breast cancer tumor growth.
salmon Salmon is another well-known source of
omega-3 fatty acids. The fish, especially the wild-caught Alaskan variety (recommended for its low contamination and sustainability) is an often-cited healthy source of protein, and for good reason. The omega-3s decrease inflammation and improve the function of our arteries. This makes it the perfect one-two punch of prevention against heart disease, still the number one deadly disease affecting women in the US. 28

KEEPING WOMEN STRONG ARTICLE ALEX RAMEY
oats
Oats, the humble breakfast basic, have an impressive profile of vitamins and minerals. The real star, however, is the vehicle they arrive in: fiber. Fiber, the part of food that our body doesn’t absorb, is crucial to the parts that our body does, like those vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients. Fiber also lowers LDL, bad cholesterol, and helps lower blood sugar levels by evening out the absorption of sugar. This metabolic harmonizer’s qualities make it an especially good breakfast choice for women approaching or experiencing menopause.
Red-hued fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, watermelon, peppers, and carrots all have their warm tone thanks to one common antioxidant: lycopene. We all know that colorful produce is good for us, but lycopene is emerging as an especially interesting phytonutrient for women’s health. It is used in the prevention of Human papillomavirus, a common cause of cervical cancer, and has also been demonstrated to
red-hued fruits & veggies
slow the growth of breast cancers. Lycopene can also work with calcium to strengthen the cells in our bones, a necessity for preventing osteoporosis. For savory dishes, a healthy source of fat like olive oil can be added for bioavailability. Lentils’ benefits are no secret, and for good reason. They’re delicious, cheap, and versatile. Luckily for women, they also have over 30% of our daily iron needs in one serving. Women are at a significantly higher risk of anemia than men, especially through the reproductive years. Anemia can manifest with weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and a multitude of other symptoms rooted in lower than normal blood cell count. However, a diet rich in iron increases our blood cells’ iron stores, allowing the body to efficiently metabolize and create energy and facilitate oxygen transport throughout the body.
While most women know what healthy foods to reach for, a

elebrating your child’s birthday should be an enjoyable occasion, but when you’re pulled in so many different directions, planning their birthday party can feel like one more thing on your to-do list. Fortunately, there are plenty of options for busy parents and the locations available for parties in Eden Prairie are as different as the interests of your kids. So, why not let someone else plan the party, wrangle and entertain the kids, and clean up the mess?
Conquer Ninja Warrior offers a unique birthday party location that replicates the popular American Ninja Warrior television show. The party features private gym time and a trainer dedicated solely to your group. The trainer will set up an obstacle course for the kids and time their run through, making it feel like the TV show. For the ultimate no fuss party, there’s also an option to have pizza, cake, and drinks in their party room. To find out more information, you can visit their website or call them at 952-378-1285. Conquer Ninja Warrior is located within the Champions Hall on Washington Avenue South, near Valley View Road and Highway 169. It’s a 55,000 square foot complex housing a variety of sport courts, fitness destinations, and AirMaxx Trampoline Park and Fun Center with mini golf, laser tag, and an arcade. The site is also home to a restaurant, snack bar with Starbucks, and a frozen yogurt stand.

An Art Center party offers the option to create jewelry, make books, cards, board games, and many others. For the nature lover in your family, the Outdoor Center features a log cabin setting and a short hike with a naturalist who will introduce the kids to an animal that lives at the nature center. skin damage – UVA and UVB. Natural sun is mostly UVB while tanning beds are mostly UVA. While all UV damage is cancer causing (carcinogenic), UVA rays are more damaging. These rays penetrate more deeply. In addition to skin cancer, UVA also plays a huge role in the aging of the skin. HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN SHOULD WE ACTUALLY BE WEARING?
When spending time in the sun, it is smart to apply a good coat of sunscreen 30 minutes prior to exposure. Both chemical and physical blockers are protective. Since physical blockers such as zinc or titanium do not sting if eyes are exposed, it may be best to use these on the face. Sunscreen should be re-applied every 90-120 minutes – sooner if exposed to water. A general rule of thumb is that a shot glass – or one ounce – of sunscreen is needed to coat an average size adult. ANY OTHER TIPS FOR PROTECTING OUR SKIN?
In addition to using sunscreen, I recommend using an anti-oxidant serum once daily prior to applying sunscreen. While my favorite product is SkinMedica TNS Essential serum, I also recommend the

selves up and get back on track to living a more peaceful and self-loving life.
Tips To Break Free From Feelings Of Not Being Good Enough: Tell your inner critic to go on silent mode. Understand that the little voice that tells you that are not good enough will always be along for the ride; however, you can make peace with it and turn down the volume. Stop self-sabotaging yourself. Really, when you think about it, feeling like you don’t measure up is really an excuse to not measure up, isn’t it? It’s like a get-out-of-jail-free-card, of
sorts. As Lori Deschene, author of The Tiny Buddha says, “We can’t hate ourselves into a version of ourselves we can love.” Let that sink in for a couple of minutes. Call a cease fire on your need for perfection! Women struggle mightily with their need for perfection. It’s like there is no middle ground–if we don’t do something absolutely perfectly, we jump to the irrational conclusion that we have failed and, therefore, we are not good enough. Rather than celebrating our near perfect performance, we berate ourselves for our imperfections. In the end, who cares? We do. To live a full and satisfying life, we need to allow ourselves to not be perfect. Otherwise, we will remain eternally caught up in the struggle for unobtainable perfection. Be kind to yourself. Now. Beating yourself up takes the joy out of each day and offers no positive outcome. It’s not like negative self-talk miraculously produces feelings of self-love or kindness to others. Be your own friend, and if your friend talked to you the way you talk to yourself, would you still want to be friends with that person? Highly unlikely! No one wants to get pummeled verbally, why do we do it to ourselves? You get to choose how you respond to every situation, every day. It’s the law of attraction in action: Choose to be miserable and you’ll find plenty of reasons to be miserable, but on the other hand, choose self-acceptance and you’ll find ways to be at peace with yourself. Changing lifelong behavior patterns takes time and repeated conscientious effort. Believ-
ing we are good enough and that we are lovable is not only possible, but it is a necessary ingredient to attaining a fulfilling and meaningful life for ourselves.
