Lifestyle Letter

Happy March everyone!

U

p to this point, winter seems to have left us high and dry showing off all the flaws around the house. Have no fear fellow homeowners; there is help out there for all your projects.

Established in 1880, Eden Prairie truly had its building heyday a full one hundred years later. I've been a part of so many conversations about whether to stay or go when the house needs some bigger investment dollars. I say, "Go where?" there is no 'where.' We are just 12 miles outside of the city center of Minneapolis. We know what is happening in our community; where building and developments are going to happen because we've matured as a community and the best is here - not yet to come. To me, this means it's time to update our homes and landscapes and enjoy this beautiful place we call home. I hope that you are looking around your house and yard seeing all the possibilities. It's time to start a plan. Take the inspiration photos you've been dreaming about and visit the local landscape and garden center or get a meeting with a reputable remodeler to start the conversation. They'll help you figure out how to make it happen in a way that you'll be happy with for a very long time. Significant investments in your home and landscaping are not wholly DIY projects. Leave it to the pros to zero in on what you can do and what they can do to get the best outcome that will save you money and make you happy. Save-the-Date, please! Saturday, April 29th is the annual EP Gives event that is going to blow your socks off! I'm so excited to find out that The Dap Squad will be playing the dance party. Google The Dap Squad and sample the music, you won't be disappointed. So, get a sitta, or better yet reserve a room and spend the night. See you there!

Fun For Good TOP 5 REASONS TO ATTEND EP GIVES! ARTICLE MARY MACKMILLER

T

he Eden Prairie Community Foundation is now in its 36th year of positively impacting all EP citizens. Five hundred grants have been awarded to over 84 organizations. Four priority areas for granting are social services, recreation and the environment, arts and culture, and education. The largest source of grant funding is our annual event; EP Gives scheduled for Saturday, April 29th. Whether you have never missed, have never been, or attended recently, here are my top five reasons why you can’t miss my favorite night of the year. I call it “Fun. For Good.”

New Venue, Award Winning Chef

We debuted EP Gives in 2013 at Green Acres Event Center thanks to the generosity of owner Steve Schussler and Sunhi Ryan, and feel honored to have been their first public event. Sadly we outgrew this unique venue. After a search for a larger venue in Eden Prairie, we discovered there were no options. We were delighted to find Oak Ridge Hotel and Conference Center in Chaska, an easy 12-minute drive from Kowalski’s. Starting at 6:00 PM you can mingle and sample food from four countries created by Virgil Emmert CEC, ACE. Virgil was the 2014 American Culinary Federation Chef of the Year for the Minneapolis Chapter. At 7:30 the formal program will begin with the Awarding of Grants, Live Auction, and Fund-a-Need.

Hot New Band – Stay the Night!

Beginning at 8:30 you can savor scrumptious desserts and coffee. Afterward, dance the night away to The Dap Squad billed as the “Midwest’s #1 Variety Event Band”. Comprised of an elite group of musicians (you can sample the band on their website). This award winning, sought after Band has played at the Dakota, for corporate events and weddings. Make it a night! Oak Ridge is offering a special room rate of $99. To reserve, call (952) 368-1492 and use the Group Code: EP-Gives.

Ring in Spring - Connect With Your Neighbors

Come out, come out wherever you are! After a long Minnesota winter, you will be ready for an excuse to ring in spring. EP Gives guests report that they love seeing old friends and catching up with people they don’t see often enough. It is also the perfect place to re-charge your batteries. I promise you, the energy in the room is palpable when so many people come together for a common cause. Guests feel that Eden Prairie has been good to them and it feels good to give back in such a powerful and meaningful way.

Meet Some True Local Heroes

The highlight of the evening for me is always the awarding of grants. EP-based non-profits and service organizations apply for grants. EPCF Grant Committee Chair Katie Castro and a dedicated group of your neighbors decide who receives grants. One representative from each of the grantee organizations is called to the podium to receive their check. They have an opportunity to describe how the grant will be used, what it means to them and who will benefit.

Recharge Your Batteries

I am willing to bet you could use a night out to just be you and reconnect with who you were before life got so complicated. For many people I know, and for me EP Gives is one of those nights. It is a gift you can give yourself, and the good thing is many will benefit. I have had the privilege of being affiliated with the Eden Prairie Community Foundation since 2007 and an unanticipated side benefit is that I have met some of the nicest people in my life. Won’t you join me for my favorite night of the year? Tickets are $100, and $65 is tax deductible. Purchase tickets online at EPCommunityFoundation.org or call me at (952) 294-0526

Renovate & Refine

Simple Ideas to Renovate and Refine Your Outdoor Spaces ARTICLE KELLY LORENZ

16

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | March 2017

T

he word “renovate” brings to my mind an endless project that will require abundant resources and much time to complete. I also think “big mess” and immediately begin to wonder if it’s even wise for me to start a renovation project. In previous years, after pondering an outdoor renovation idea for an extended period of time, I’ve either changed my mind or told myself that I would tackle the project next year. Well, it’s a new year and that was my old attitude! My new attitude realizes that when a project is broken down into small pieces, it can be comfortably managed, achievable, and enjoyable. That’s right! Renovation projects can be enjoyable! I would like to share a few simple ideas about how you can renovate and add an updated look to your outdoor spaces this year. Paint is a definite go-to item for a fresh, updated look for any outdoor area. Instead of tossing out your tired-looking flower containers, which you may have been using for endless years, give them a facelift with a fresh coat of paint. Consider repurposing an old crate or basket into an outdoor container by covering it with a durable coat of exterior-grade paint, lining it with landscape fabric, and filling it with potting soil. When the spring planting season arrives, fill it with a variety of beautiful flowers and plants. By painting only one or two colors on the container, you can add more flair and interest by using a variety of flowers. Let your new plant container be the focal point of your patio or front entry! With a renovated and dynamic-looking old crate or basket, you can compliment even the fresh green leaves of simple herbs or grasses. Another way to set the mood, in your landscape, is to use some accent lighting. Try dropping a few votives into a collection of mason jars, or into drilled holes in a Birch log, to subtly illuminate your outdoor entertainment area. Simple projects like these can be done with supplies you may already have around your home. Adding ribbon, along with a touch of paint to your votive holders, will complete the look. Consider adding lighting to the potted plants that surround your outdoor seating area. Grouping a few citronella torches or candle stakes into outdoor containers creates a greater impact than a single torch. This same type of lighting can be expanded out into the yard to light the way for guests to venture out to a secluded garden bench. In addition to lighting, stepping stones, cut into the lawn, will draw your guests out into the garden. A stepping-stone path is inviting and functional, yet requires minimal work to install. Planks of wood can also be used to create a small boardwalk across a dry creek bed or narrow drainage area in the yard. Wood planks and stepping stones also work well for making small pathways to access water spigots, hoses and garden sheds. Hopefully, these simple ideas will spark ideas for new ways you can refresh your outdoor living space! With spring just around the corner, take a look at your storage areas and find that old container or item to renovate and fill with beautiful plants. A few simple enhancements will give your landscape a fresh new look for a great new spring! Visit www.themustardseed.com for more.

Unlikely competition ARTICLE ELIAS JOHNSON

I

t isn’t too surprising to discover that the video game industry is catching up to the film industry. After all, video games are starting to look just like movies, and they even are starring big-name actors to voice the characters and work with motion-capture technology so that their facial expressions and body language appear in the games. What is surprising, is that many people still choose dice and cards over joysticks and remotes. Not only are tabletop games more popular than ever, but because of public acceptance and cultural exchanges, tabletop games are better and more accessible than ever as well. During my first year in college, I spent more time playing the board game Settlers of Catan than I did reading over my lecture notes or playing the newest video games. In fact, the nearest study room was almost always filled with people playing cards, rolling dice, or negotiating trade deals, with no real money on the table at all… except for the rare poker night. Board games aren’t just for families or little kids anymore, they’ve branched out into the mainstream and attract people of all ages and interests. Settlers of Catan, often called a “gateway game” because of its low difficulty but high enjoyability, is a must-play for any fan of classic board game Monopoly or civilization-themed video games. Every flaw of Monopoly has been addressed in this addition to the trading and buying genre. If it’s not your turn, you still need to pay attention to the dice rolls of other players, which often result in

18

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | March 2017

all players receiving cards. If one player is dominating the board, there’s still time to catch-up using strategy, diplomacy, or even luck. Nobody is defeated before the game ends, which is common in European-style games, or “Eurogames,” and since the board is made up of randomized tiles, no two games are alike. And finally, Catan sessions last for about an hour, instead of the night-long sessions that some Monopoly games can provide. “Tabletop games?” “Eurogames?” Since when did Parcheesi get so complicated? For those of you put-off by all the jargon with these newer games, let me ask you, have you ever heard of En Passant? What about Prophylaxis? Both of those terms (and much more) come from the most famous board game of all--chess. “Tabletop” just refers to any game played on a table, from the simpler card and dice games to the more complex war and tile games. And “Eurogame” is the counterpart to American-style games, which are often called, and I’m not lying, “Ameritrash” because of a reliance on theme and luck. “Ameritrash” is a problematic name for several reasons. “Trash” seems overly negative, given that these games are often well received worldwide. The other half of the name is also ridiculous since these games are not always produced in America! The name has almost become a dig at Eurogamers and their supposed sense of superiority about spartan themes and games of pure skill with no chance. The notion that “games are supposed to be

Here are some quick and fast recommendations:

Settlers of Catan: An improvement upon

Monopoly. More trading, better building, and more interaction. Ticket to Ride: Players claim railroad lines to connect cities. It’s Sequence but more colorful and slightly more intense. A great family game. Pandemic: Work together to save human-

hard, not fun!” is almost universally said in jest, and this allows for a public appreciation of both genres. An aspect that is usually lacking or not very developed in Eurogames is a theme. The first thing we see when we look at a board game is its theme. This is the story that the art is telling us. Candyland tells a story of kids traveling through a fantastical land where everything and everybody are either made of candy, or obsessed with it. The gameplay is simply matching colors on cards, and without its theme, Candyland would simply be flashcards. While a good theme can help a game sell, it cannot fix broken or simple gameplay. Therefore, read some reviews on Amazon.com or Boardgamegeek.com before buying the newest board game featuring famous characters, it might just be a bad car with a good paint job. And on the opposite side, don’t immediately dismiss abstract games, that is, games with no theme, such as Backgammon. In an age where video games are becoming as cinematic as films and as literary as novels, it’s refreshing that we are also experiencing a renaissance in board games, an experience that connects us face-to-face with friends old and new.

ity from four spreading diseases. A cooperative game where everybody wins or loses. Each player has a special ability. Number 1 on boardgamegeek.com. Carcassonne: Players take turns placing tiles to create a city similar to Carcassonne, France. You try to complete castles and roads to earn points. Very fast and easy. A good social game. Agricola: Each player is in charge of growing and feeding a family. You plant crops, breed animals, and try to utilize your family farm in the most efficient way. Complex but very fun. Surprisingly one of my sister’s favorites. Not much social interaction is built in.

But, it’s our job to help our clients think of how a design will impact their home not only today but 5 to 10 years in the future.” Lecy Bros work on remodeling projects ranging from homeowners who purchase a house with the intention of changing the rooms or aspects of the floor plan that do not work for them, to remodeling the home they’ve lived in for many years. When a family outgrows a home but loves the location, schools, and their neighbors, remodeling is sometimes an overlooked option. Two common misconceptions about remodeling involve time and cost. With the abundance of home improvement shows on television, it sometimes leads to an unrealistic perception of what the process of remodeling is actually like. Homeowners often believe they can remodel an entire kitchen for an unrealistic amount of money in an impossible timeframe or they believe it’s going to be extremely stressful with thousands of dollars in hidden costs. Johnsrud says they strive to complete their due diligence up-front. “We want to tell homeowners the good news and the bad news before we start. We take their expectations and goals and lay them out on paper, while being realistic about cost and design constraints. We put a lot of time and thought into each design and do our best to make sure each bid is as accurate as possible. We don’t tell a client it’s going to take one month when it’s going to take four, and we don’t tell them it’s going to cost $100,000, when it’s really going to cost $200,000. We understand that a realistic bid is the best way for a homeowner to make an informed decision that works for their family.” For those who don’t have the funding for one large remodel, there are options as well. Johnsrud says many homeowners remodel in stages for cash flow reasons. “We develop a master plan of what the end result will be, which also ensures you’re not remodeling something today that you want to change in two years. They might do the lower level one year, then the main floor, and the following year the master bedroom. It’s a great way to get the results you want without paying for everything at one time.” As for his favorite part of the business, Johnsrud says it’s the people. “A dramatic home transformation is always great, but watching a family see their dream home become a reality is incredibly rewarding.” Their custom homes can be seen in the Parade of Homes, which runs March 4th through April 2nd, and the Artisan Home Tour in June. More information on these shows can be found at www.paradeof homes.org. Lecy Bros. Homes and Remodeling is located in Minnetonka and can be reached at 952-9449499. Paris International Escape:

What is more amazing than a trip to Paris in the springtime? Paris is generally

recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful cities; however, as giddy tulips and daffodils burst forth, laughing off winter’s grime and gloom, everything takes on a fresh and new feel. The excitement and energy of spring in Paris is palpable.

sightseeing

Paris is steeped in history and there are so many impressive sights to visit,

that you could live in Paris for an extended period and still not see everything of interest. Therefore, I will mention only a few highlights of a visit to Paris. No trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. The eternal symbol of romance, the Eiffel Tower, or Tour Eiffel as it is known in France, is extraordinary. I propose visiting during the day and again in the evening as the two experiences will be completely different. I also highly recommend an evening River Seine boat tour. This romantic tour takes visitors past many well-known sights making for a spectacular view of Paris’ famous landmarks. You’ll definitely want to stroll along the Champs-Elysees, the grandest tree-lined shopping avenue in all of Europe. Be sure to visit the Arc de Triomphe which honors those soldiers who fought in the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Beneath the vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. While there, take in the breathtaking view of the Champs-Elysees from atop the Arc de Triomphe. Cycling fans will recognize the ChampsElysees as the site of the celebrated eight-lap dramatic cobblestone finish of the Tour de France which takes place there every July. A visit to Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre is not to be missed. The Basilica du Sacré-Coeur is perched on a hill and its white domes can be seen from all over Paris. Situated in the Montmartre neighborhood, once popularized by artists such as Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh, the area has retained its bohemian charms. The neighborhood, bursting with cafés and museums, remains a haven for artists and art-lovers. If you enjoy art, you’ll want to visit two of the most famous museums in the world: The Louvre and Musèe d’Orsay. The Louvre is massive and you could spend several full days visiting the museum. Therefore, you may want to determine which exhibits (like the Mona Lisa) that you want to see and plan to return on a future visit to the City of Lights. The much smaller Musèe d’Orsay, housed in a converted railway station, is known for its superior collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art. You’ll find works by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh and many more of the great masters sprinkled throughout this breathtaking museum.

Day Trippin’

Travel Destination

If you have enough time, take a day trip outside of Paris. The countryside surrounding Paris is beautiful and it will be a nice change of pace from the huge city. My all-time favorite day trip from Paris is a day in Chartres with a visit to the incredible Chartres Cathedral, one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in the entire world. Another option is a visit to the gorgeous Loire Valley, resplendent with castles, châteaux, and vineyards. Paris, and all of France for that matter, holds an unforgettable and indelible place in the hearts of folks who have had the pleasure of visiting. If you’ve never been to Paris, you may want to plan a visit and find out for yourself the true meaning of joie de vivre. Create your own precious memories of the most beautiful and romantic city on the planet!

People Watching

Cafés in Paris are places to see and be seen.

People watching at a café, observing Parisians in their day to day lives, is one of the great highlights of a visit to Paris. Linger over lunch or dinner or simply enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, but either way, relax and soak in the moment. The French have a way of living, being in the moment and enjoying life which they refer to as joie de vivre.

Trend Setter

THE 2017 MOODBOARD ARTICLE ALEX RAMEY

R

edecorating, renovating, or waiting for the perfect finishing touches to find their way home - whenever we make a change in our space, we don’t just think about how it looks, but how it feels. Color is the most emotional characteristic of the visual experience, so we’ve rounded up the top trending shades to make your space feel as beautiful as it looks.

Green, with bright notes of yellow

According to Pantone, printing-company-turned-color-authority, the color of 2017 is their spring green shade Greenery. This effervescent shade of earth is cheerful and enlivening, perfect for welcoming in another Minnesota spring. A yellowy green is perfect for complementary accent walls as well as kitchen accessories like stoneware, dish cloths, and glass. Of course, we can’t forget the ultimate embodiment of Greenery: wandering potted vines, lush succulents and suspended air plants.

Nude, peachy pink

Soft peach is cozy, demure, and fresh. Thanks to its versatility, it embodies these different personalities based on how it is presented. To keep it feeling new, focus on warm, more saturated shades; this avoids any dustiness associated with the pastel. For comfort and sanctuary, we love pinky-nude in textured fabric like wide-knit or rawfringed throw pillows or linen, light-filtering curtains for that nostalgic late-afternoon glow. Minimalists will adore pops of peach in smooth, accessorial touches: a structured floor cushion or a planter with clean lines.

Dark, smoldering red

Burning embers, spiced rum, and cherry reduction: this timeless sangria shade feels more lively than ever. A perfect color to embody warmth and life, spiced red continues to be our favorite for adding depth and energy to our living and sleeping spaces. To incorporate red’s nuances into a space that already has individuality, add wooden textures with warm finishes or artwork that includes this garnet hue. It especially suits rooms that do not get much natural light, as it adds a vibrancy that can stand alone.

The deepest grey-blue

This muted take on Prussian blue is stimulating and so modern. A work of art alone, this color is reminiscent of both serenity and endlessness. At once more purple and grayer than 2016’s Moroccan ultramarine blue, this not-quite-navy tone originates more from the center of a stormy lake or a starless night sky. To capture this blue’s vastness, we focused on flat, dominant surfaces like a minimally accessorized wall or even a high ceiling. The shade is especially flattering to rooms that are already furnished with plenty of texture and patterns. To keep it from overwhelming smaller spaces, aim for a blue with plenty of gray undertones that aren’t too dark.

Marigold, the richest yellow

When opulence meets playfulness, we get marigold. This tone is dichotomous as youthful and old-souled, which serves the beholder in all of our complexity. This goldenrod yellow manifests optimism as an all-over wall color or woven through patterned area rugs and printed throw pillows. A yellow-gold wears well in a central living area, or rooms with lots of sunlight. We also love it in small doses in rooms with dark, rich color schemes. For a contrast in rooms with lots of depth, try ceramic details at coffee table height. Whether we are doing a visual overhaul or tweaking a work in progress, joy happens when beauty and intention aligns. And when we find eye candy that’s also soul food? It feels good.

T

he saying, "what goes around comes around" has never been truer than with household tips and tricks. Cleaning short-cuts and tips got their start during the depression years to help the woman of the home save time, money and solve a common problem, household tips have been traded and shared by anyone running a home for years. There's even been a series of books that made the New York Times best-selling books list for three years, Mary Ellen's Household Hints was hugely popular through the 70's and 80's. These days those books have been replaced by Pinterest, and hints and tricks pages abound and are new to the younger generation who in turn are improving these home tips and making them their own. You'll find it's no longer the women of the house who gets in on the fun, the man of the house enjoys these shortcuts as well. The common thread for many recipes that will safely clean your home without the worry of being toxic is white vinegar. White vinegar is harmless, non-toxic and can successfully clean many surfaces just as quickly as the expensive cleaners from the household cleaner aisle at your grocery store. I swear I smell a good amount of vinegar in my favorite store-bought cleaning supplies. For a general all around housecleaning solution I take a canning jar and fill 3/4's with white vinegar and top it off with the rinds from oranges, lemons, limes or grapefruit, any combination will do. Cover the jar securely

42

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | March 2017

and keep in a dark place for 2 to 3 weeks. When ready to use strain the citrus rinds, return the vinegar to the jar and when needed pour about a 1/4 cup of vinegar into your cleaning pail and fill with one gallon of hot water, use as you would have used a Pine-sol type of cleaner. This solution is perfect for kitchens and baths, cutting soap scum, removing calcium deposits plus deodorizing the air. Who knew that simple vinegar and leftover citrus rinds could make your home smell better! The other vinegar solution I always have on hand is one just for showers. In a 32 oz spray bottle (use a good quality bottle) fill almost full with water, measure in approx 2 to 3 tablespoons of white vinegar and follow with a 1-second squirt of dishwasher rinse aid such as Finish or Jet-Dry. Cap the bottle with the spray nozzle, give it a quick shake and place in the shower. To use, simply spray down the shower walls after every shower, you don't need to go overboard; a generous misting is all that's needed. This solution will prevent mold and calcium buildup, plus those permanently etched water stains will not form if used after every shower and you won't need to clean the shower so often (maybe once every month or 2 instead of every week). I have been using this solution successfully for so long I don't remember where I got the tip to credit the creator. These two solutions are perfect for spring cleaning, will save you time, money, and deodorize the air. Is there a better enticement than getting the job done now so you can get on with welcoming spring?
