ne of my 2016 New Year’s resolutions that I made in January was to get a job that allowed me to be creative, work with inspiring people, and make a positive impact on my community. Fast-forward to about 7 months later, when I walked into Mary Abeln’s office in response to a job opportunity for her company. Halfway through the interview, the conversation veered over to a different project that she and Andy were starting, a magazine.

Fortunately, I did not get the job I was interviewing for that day. Instead, I got an internship for the launch of Eden Prairie Lifestyle. As the magazine grew, so did my position for the publication, I went from intern, to associate editor, to editor. I could not be more proud of our magazine, our writers and photographers, the readers, the advertisers, and the positive community impact Eden Prairie Lifestyle has made. I am passionate about the small businesses, diversity, art, philanthropy, and people that bind this community together. I strive each month to create a publication that Eden Prairie can also take immense pride in. I would like to thank our readers for your constant feedback and involvement, Mary and Andy for keeping me around even when I am being annoyingly particular, and my family for your never ending support. Have big goals for 2017, and stay positive that your goals can be achieved. Take every situation as an opportunity and let life surprise you. A new year is, for many of us, a time of renewal. To break free from our day to day activities, and experience renewal, a trip to an area that is celebrated for its rejuvenating qualities may be in order. Sedona, Arizona is known around the world for its vast beauty and unique restorative and healing qualities. A short two-hour drive north of Phoenix, nestled among the stunning Red Rock formations, Sedona is truly a world unto itself. Far from the hustle and bustle of the big city, life in Sedona ambles along at a less-hurried pace. It’s a great antidote for stress and day-to-day problems and an ideal setting for the three R’s: relaxation, rest, and renewal. An escape to Sedona allows one to commune in nature, visit the energy-rich vortexes found in the breathtakingly beautiful surrounding Red Rocks, or hike along the numerous trails in the area. Sedona is famous for its numerous art galleries, handcrafted jewelry, and spas; however, the main attraction in Sedona is truly the scenery. There are over 100 maintained trails in the Sedona area to enable visitors to enjoy the outdoors and experience nature at its finest. Hiking, biking, and exploring are favorite year-round outdoor activities. Sunrises and sunsets are especially amazing as the sunlight reflects off the red sandstone. Additionally, there are numerous tour operators in the area offering everything from jeep tours into the mountains, guided spiritual encounters at the vortexes, hot air balloon rides, sightseeing and much more. Sedona is truly an all-season paradise! ATTRACTIONS NEAR SEDONA

The area surrounding Sedona is also rich and varied. To the south lies the Verde Valley which boasts an abundance of wineries with tasting rooms open year-round. Just north of Sedona is the gorgeous Oak Creek Canyon, which is not to be missed. Less than an hour farther north of Sedona is Flagstaff, which is a jumping off point for the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The South Rim and all its’ grandeur is just 90 minutes north of Flagstaff, making that loop a very easy day trip. Also within easy driving distance is Winslow, which was popularized by the Eagles’ hit song, “Take It Easy.” A visit to Standin’ on the Corner Park, which commemorates the catchy tune, is a fun bit of nostalgia for those familiar with the song. Plus, just a few miles from Winslow lies the Meteor Crater which is the world’s best preserved meteorite impact site. It’s a whopper measuring nearly a mile wide and 550 feet deep! A VISIT = RENEWAL

There is such an abundance of amazing things to do during a visit to Sedona, be sure to allow several days to fully experience the area. Sedona is a very experiential place to visit and one must allow plenty of time to just be in the moment, reflect, and experience the renewing energy and vitality of the area.

Slowly whisk the wet ingredients into the dry, be careful to go very slowly so the ingredients do not prematurely react. The mixture should have the texture of damp sand. We wanted our bath bombs to have layers of different vibrant colors, so we separated the mixture into small bowls and added a good amount of food coloring to each. To mold the bath bombs use a spoon to scoop in some of the mixture, then use the back of the spoon to press and compact each layer. Make sure that both sides of the mold are overflowing with the mixture before firmly compressing the mold together. Tap the mold lightly to loosen the bath bomb and carefully remove from the mold. Set your bath bomb out to dry for at least 24 hours, drop into your bath and enjoy! CONTINUED >

I am Indian, but I had no idea how to explain it. S

o where are you really from? For so long I wasn’t sure what people were asking me when they posed that question. I’m from Minnesota. It was the only answer that made sense considering I was born here, raised here, and went to school here. Little did I know that being from Minnesota just was not enough of a response for people. Then I thought, wait a minute, where am I from? And I don’t mean, where was I born, I know the answer to that. I was born and raised in Minnesota. So then when people asked "Okay, but where did your family come from?" I would say: My dad was born in Uganda and my mom was born in Kenya. The response then would be: "So, you’re African?" I was then even more confused because I never identified as African and my parents didn’t refer to us as Africans. We cooked some African style dishes at home; still, it didn’t feel right. At this point, I didn’t know what I was, but knew what I wasn’t. Being Minnesotan didn’t feel 100% right, and being African didn’t quite fit either, I had some work to do to figure it all out. So "where are you really from?" ended up being a question that wasn’t for the people asking, it was more for me to understand my journey, my families story. When my mom used to tell me that we were going to Kenya, I never questioned it. I just thought it was normal to go back to

Kenya every year. That’s where my family is, that’s where the Memon community is, that’s where the people who look like me and speak my mother tongue come from so what was there to question? Gradually, as I took more interest in Bollywood and Indian culture such as my clothes, foods, family values, and being friends with other Indians, I thought, wait - could I possibly just be South Asian? How? I’m not from India or any other South Asian country? I think I always knew that I am Indian, but I had no idea how to explain it. When I got to college, I learned a word: diaspora. Diaspora is a population that moved from its original homeland. Which made sense because there are a lot of people in Kenya who look like me, watch the same movies, speak the same language, and eat the same foods. Okay, so now I know I’m Indian, and my parents were born in Africa. How did we get there? When did that start? Where did we come from? There’s a small district named Cutch in the state of Gujarat India where my language Cutchi originates. The Memon people (which also originate from the state of Gujarat) speak Gujarati (including my father.) I've been in awe of my dad for years as I wondered how he could know the seemingly complicated language. It is all about where he comes from that fills all the questions asked with answers to treasure. We came from that little district in the vast country of India. But that doesn’t respond to the question of how we got to Africa. The answer being, the East African Railway system. It turns out that my family, going back quite a few generations, were dispatched to different countries in East Africa because of British colonization. During the time that India was colonized by the British, East African countries were as well, those including Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. slaves to build the railway system. My gran dma on my mother’s side was from Tanzania, so it all started to make sense. Not only because people who spoke the same langu age from my community were there, but plent y of South Asians who speak Guja rati too. And lastly, how did we get to the United States? My dad came from a smal l town called Kumi, Ugan da. From 1971-1979 Idi Amin was the president and dismissed all the South Asians from the country. Due to genocide, my fathe r, and his family got a church sponsor from Minnesota. He was 12 years old when he arrived, went to school and then joine d the Marine Corps to proudly serve his new country. Much later, he went back to Kenya to meet a girl and marr y her. My paren ts had an arranged marriage in September of 1991. My mother gained her status as she was then married to a US citizen. See the thing is, people, for the most part, are fami liar with the last names Pate l and Singh, thos e two sir names mean that you know that they are from India, or they have fami ly from India. You rarely hear last names like Bagh a and Bakh rani and you’re not sure what part of India they are from or if they ’re even from India or Sout h Asia at all. For a long time, I didn’t know who I was or where I had come from. When I got to college, I parti cipated as an executive board member of an organization called Students of South Asia (or SOSA, for short). The friends that I made are people I now call my family. SOSA was my home away from my home. I was able to learn that when you don’t know where you came from, you shou ldn’t expect others to know eithe r. My heritage is my home. My history is my power, especially as someone who is the first-generation U.S.-born.

Scrape the roasted flesh from the skin, and simmer it with sautéed yellow onion, fresh sage, and a tart Granny Smith apple. When everything’s soft and the flavors have melded, purée it all in the blender. Finally, enrich the soup with a bit of heavy cream.

1. Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on the baking sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves (alternatively, you can rub it on evenly with your fingers). Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel, core, and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the apple, onion, and sage, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened,
