t's been an exciting month for all of us at the magazine. The premier issue of Eden Prairie Lifestyle arrived in EP mailboxes September 1st and 2nd. It was a bit unnerving to start this new venture and hope that everyone's hard work paid off. Once we had it in our hands we knew we'd accomplished our mission. So how do we top the first issue? Well, Fall Fashion of course!
In this issue there are eight gorgeous pages and the cover of Fall Fashion to excite and delight you all. I want to thank Von Maur and store manager Liz Kuebler for providing us unlimited access to the amazing fashions for this Fall presentation. There is much more than we can show you at Von Maur, so get in there and give yourselves a re-fresh for Fall. Our models are my very own nieces! Eden Prairie Lions and Lioness Corn Feed
This year’s Annual Eden Prairie Lions and Lioness Corn Feed took place on August 6th at Round Lake Park Pavilion. Visitors enjoyed around 5,000 ears of corn with their meals. The proceeds from the event went towards various projects and nonprofits.
Olympic Hills 9/11 Lemonade Stand
The local lemonade stand happens annually on 9/11, friends and families of the Olympic Hills neighborhood work together to set up a fundraiser by selling cookies and lemonade and donating the proceeds to various causes supporting veterans and those affected by the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.

hat makes a sumptuous evening out? A great meal served by friendly people in an inviting and comfortable atmosphere would be our definition. Jimmy’s Restaurant at 11000 Red Circle Drive is just that place. Located at Crosstown Hwy 62 and Shady Oak Rd, Jimmy’s features contemporary and traditional American cuisine with global influences, market fresh fish and seafood, Top Quality Angus Beef steaks and chops, slowly roasted baby back ribs, gourmet salads, chicken pastas, burgers and hand crafted sandwiches. Jimmy’s invites everyone to come and celebrate 10 great years. The celebration is October 12 through the 23rd. Chef Corey Henkel will serve up great specials and a new menu will be introduced. Don’t worry, the dishes that made Jimmy’s great are still there. New items will be added to coincide with customers’ desire for healthier and lighter fare. Great food is in the planning and preparation. Chef Henkel is extraordinary at his craft. Prior to becoming head chef at Jimmy’s, Corey has been with great restaurant names such as Bacio, BLVD Kitchen and Zelo. Of note, he is also a graduate of the French Culinary Institute and told us that his grill cooks are the best in town. Owner Mike Jennings is a noted veteran of the restaurant business having owned and operated the classic Red Coach Inn on Excelsior Boulevard with Father Jim Jennings. The Jennings restaurant lineage goes back to the 1930’s with Mike’s grandfather known to all as “Big Mike”. The standards that Big Mike lived by was to serve a great product, deliver great service and do this in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Success over time has proven that “Big Mike” had the right formula. Upon entering Jimmy’s, we think that your first feeling will be that of pleasant comfort. The restaurant interior is rich and handsome yet casual. Note how the stone and hand-painted murals create a fun and exciting atmosphere. The bar is a great spot. Preparing your yard for winter LAWN CARE
Now is a great time to aerate your lawn, while it is still green. Aerating helps to break up the soil enabling water and nutrients to penetrate deeper and get to more roots. A stronger root system will help your grass bounce back well in the spring. Over-seed with a blend of grass seed. Spread seed after your lawn is aerated or even if you do not aerate. This will help thicken up your lawn and fill in bare spots. The cooler temps of our fall season are ideal for seeding, best to get the seed down in September to early October. Apply a Fall or Winterizer fertilizer. If you have some perennial weeds annoying you (like dandelions) then apply one with weed control in it. This will help to kill them yet this fall so they don’t come back to haunt you in the Spring. PLANT CARE
Fall planting can be done all the way until the ground begins to freeze, usually as late as Thanksgiving. Roots grow best in cooler soil and since the air is cooler your plants won’t be as stressed as when you plant them mid-Summer! Don’t forget to plant tulips and daffodil bulbs now so you have their great flowers in the Spring. Water evergreens and newly planted plants until the ground

Spray evergreens with an anti-desiccant, often referred to as Wilt Proof. This helps seal the moisture in the needles and leaves to prevent them from drying out over winter. Wrap tree trunks with light colored tree wrap to keep the rabbits, voles, mice and deer from damaging the bark. It also prevents against frost cracks. Cut back perennials to about 2” from the soil, making sure not to scalp the crown of the plant. If you prefer winter texture, it’s also okay to do this in the Spring. Trim spent blooms off shrubs and trim long branches to give a nice shape to the shrub but do not trim any lilacs or oaks at this time of the year. You would be removing the flower buds of the lilac and therefore you would not get any flowers in the spring. It’s best to trim Oaks (and most other trees) in Feb. while they are dormant to reduce the risk of diseases. Rake up leaves and compost them. Pull out dead annuals and add mums or fall pansies to your planters. Blow out your sprinkler system. Do this before a freeze to prevent possible cracks or future repairs if ice were to form in the lines and heads. Consider covering any backflow preventers to extend their life and possible damage from hard freezes. J. CARVER DISTILLERY If you are looking for the best local spirits, look no further than J. Carver Distillery in Waconia. Vodka, gin, whiskey, brandy, and even grappa, J. Carver has it all, and truly is the best you can find in Minnesota. The greatest way to grant access into all of what the local distillery has to offer is to take their tour. For a little more than the average cost of a cocktail, at $10 you can get a guided look around the distillery by one of the distillers themselves. I guarantee you will gain more information on how they make their liquor than you can even comprehend, and of course enjoy some samples. Before touring the car dealership turned distillery make sure to grab a drink from their cocktail lounge. With over 14 classic and specialty cocktails to choose from, you will surely be able to find at least one that you will want to sip on. I recommend the Blackberry cosmopolitan made with their premium vodka, the Barrel Gin Bees Knees, or the Minnesota Mule. If you are not taking the tour you can also purchase a tasting flight of three of their spirits for $8. So what makes J. Carver a Minnesota must try? The tour guide himself says it best, “it’s easy to make your stuff taste different from everyone else’s, and it’s just as easy to make it taste equally as good. But to make your spirits taste different and better, that’s harder,
and that’s what we did.” There is no arguing that, considering their premium vodka has absolutely no after-burn. If you need another reason to check out J. Carver, go for their stance on being local. Everything the Waconia distillery uses in their production, except the bottles and machinery itself, is local. Which means each ingredient that goes into the spirits is from around you, even the barrels and labels. Whether you purchase the flight alone or get it included with tour you need to try their Premium Vodka, plus a gin and whiskey of your choice. If you want to be real adventurous ask about the Marquette Grappa. If I could sum up the distillery in one statement, it would be that the folks at J. Carver love what they do, and do it well. WACONIA BREWING COMPANY Waconia Brewing Company is best described as an “adult coffeehouse”, with great beer, of course. WBC is another mandatory stop when drinking through Waconia, with its warm atmosphere, free popcorn, extensive board game collection, and amazing brew. Before jumping in headfirst, or mouth-first into a pint of beer, I suggest ordering a flight. The $12 flight includes six beers of your choice, and you can’t go wrong with whichever ones you end up choosing. Waconia Brewing Company has four flagship brews that you will always find on tap: 255 Amber Ale, WacTown Wheat, Carver Co. Kōlsch, and 90K IPA. These beers are flagship for a reason, all fantastic and worth a sip, or more. My favorites are the WacTown Wheat, which has fantastic orange citrus flavor, and the Carver Co. Kōlsch, which of course is a German style ale. As well as the four flagships, WBC also rotates a good number of seasonal and specialty brews and always has root beer on tap. If you happen to be at Waconia Brewing Company when they are serving up their Mo’ Whiskey brew, you absolutely have to give it a try. Waconia Brewing Company has a gas fireplace, some comfortable seating, a couple of TVs and a small area for musicians to perform. WBC also has a patio used for extra seating and even some outdoor yoga during the summer. Speaking of events, they host BeerGo (Bingo to win some free beer) every Monday, Wacky WacTown Wednesday ($3 pints of WacTown Wheat) on Wednesdays, and plenty of delicious food trucks scattered throughout the month. Waconia Brewing Company is the best stop for a quick pint of some great beer and some free popcorn to munch on while watching a game or listening to some music. Although you cannot buy bottles of their brew you can take home a growler...or two. Waconia Brewing Company is located at 255 Main Street West in Waconia. SCHRAM VINEYARDS WINERY & BREWERY If you are having trouble deciphering if you want a hearty beer or a delicate wine, or maybe you just want both, Schram Vineyards Winery & Brewery has you covered. With over fifteen wines and twelve beers, Schram can be overwhelming, but in the best way possible. I suggest tackling the winery/brewery by doing a wine tasting and a beer flight. Both samplings will cost you $10 each. Red, white, specialty, dessert, light, hoppy, dark, honestly you just have to try it all. More than just the beer and wine are great here, the scenery at Schram is just as stunning. When sitting inside enjoying your drink of choice you can look out large windows and see out to the vast vineyards. To the front of the winery is an open pavilion that has another bar with more seating and two large bocce ball courts to the side. Schram offers some cheese and crackers inside and will often have a food truck out front on the weekends. Live music and yoga events are also spread throughout the month. The Making of an NFL
Parent EP grows strong families through rich traditions

W
e see youth sports as an experience where our children develop their athletic abilities, learn teamwork, grow social skills, foster friendships and have fun. On unique occasion a young athlete progresses in their chosen sport and shows ability and the potential to progress to a high level of competition and perhaps join the professional ranks. Statistical estimates will say that this is very rare. In Football the percentage of high school football players who go on to play NCAA football is estimated at 6.5% and the percentage of NCAA players who go on to the NFL is estimated at 1.6%. Eden Prairie parents Fred and Marcia LeVoir have lived the life that defies the odds. Their son Mark was a standout at Eden Prairie High School, continued his career as a starting offensive lineman at Notre Dame and then went on to a six-year career in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Saint Louis Rams and the New England Patriots. We wanted to meet with Fred and Marcia to find out what it was like as parents as Mark progressed through his journey. We should note that the LeVoir family has enjoyed a rich tradition of football. Fred’s uncle, Babe LeVoir starred for the University of Minnesota in the 1930’s, winning a national title. Son Matt LeVoir played at Northern Illinois and son Steve LeVoir had a great career at Saint John’s University. After high school Mark was highly recruited. Name a big school and Mark was high on their list. Fred will tell you that he wanted Mark to patiently look over all of the wonderful opportunities that were in front of him. This patient approach changed when Mark and Fred visited Notre Dame. At the recruiting visit Mark and Fred toured the campus, then met with the administration and the football staff on a long and exciting day. Toward the end of the day, Mark told Fred that he wanted to go by himself and visit the locker room. Upon completing this visit Mark met up with Fred – with company. It seems that at least 10 Notre Dame players wanted to meet Fred and urge Mark to come to Notre Dame. It was then that Mark told Fred “I am going to Notre Dame”. Fred may have had tears in his eyes when he tells this story. Mark had a great career at Notre Dame as a starting Offensive Tackle for three years - NFL talent was there in Mark. As his senior year came to a close and the NFL Draft was approaching finding a Sports Agent to represent Mark was next. Fred and Marcia will tell you that Charlie Weis at Notre Dame was invaluable in helping Mark and his other players in this process. Charlie had been in the NFL previously and personally knew many of the Agents. Just as Agents have scouting reports on players, players have the same reports on Agents. Coach Weis conducted a meeting with all of his players and their parents to talk about the professional process, the transition from the college game, and how to best select an Agent. Fred told us that the Agent selection process was an interesting one. Not surprisingly, some Agents interviewed were overly aggressive, perhaps not showing the “total person” concern and some were quite good. Marcia wanted an agent that showed complete integrity as a person, was not impressed by f lashiness. She was looking to see that the individual was realistic and fully explained how the entire process worked. Integrity was also critical for Fred, but he also wanted someone with a keen business perspective. He wanted to know what the about the Agents experience with offensive line players and he also wanted to know about the Agents’ relationship with various teams. The Agent chosen was Ethan Locke, formerly a professor at Florida State. The family was unified in knowing that Ethan came to the table with the full package for Mark. The NFL Draft day was one of great anticipation for Fred, Marcia, Mark and family. This day provided an unexpected twist. Mark was not drafted. As you might expect this was not necessarily a happy moment. Then the realization became apparent that Mark was a free agent and could now negotiate with any team. The phone began to ring. One of the calls was from the Chicago Bears and Mark’s career as an NFL player began. The NFL game day at the LeVoir home were always exciting and full of anticipation. If Mark’s game was not televised locally Fred and Marsha knew the establishments with the most televisions. Marsha will tell you that her heart beat faster when she saw Mark in the game on TV. One of her cherished moments was seeing the camera isolated on Mark and Randy Moss hugging in the end zone after a touchdown. A great moment for Fred was when Mark was with the Patriots in a game versus the Jets. Mark made an absolutely incredible block on cornerback Fred Strickland. Take a look at this play on YouTube “LeVoir trucks Strickland”. You will clearly understand the moment. This writer sat with Fred for two seasons of Eden Prairie High School football and you can be assured that while you are watching, you feel like you are in the game. The LeVoir family always stressed the importance of God, Family, Team and Academics in their family – believing that your best is what’s important and what’s important is the kind of Man/Woman you are and will become started and ended each day in the home. Mark is now retired and works as a Sr. Account Manager at Aqueduct Technology and is co/founder of Boston Biopharma. Brother Matt is a Staging Team Leader at Arrow Systems Integration and Steve works for General Mills as a business category manager. Sister Bridgett is in the armed forces serving in the Air Force. Brother Andy resides at home in Eden Prairie. It is interesting to note that when speaking with Fred and Marsha and recounting great moments following their son’s football careers…a great moment was a great moment whether it was at Eden Prairie High School, Northern Illinois University, St. John’s, Notre Dame or the NFL. The LeVoir’s are a great family and what we have written is only part of their story. They are wonderful neighbors to all of us in Eden Prairie.

FARRELL'S EXTREME BODYSHAPING HAS ARRIVED! ARE YOU READY TO LIVE AT A LEVEL 10?
J
ust this past Spring Eden Prairie landed Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping (FXBS) located next to Jerry's grocery at 9627 Anderson Lakes in Eden Prairie. I’ll tell you now that I am biased because I am a FIT Member. That’s right – even this 55-year-old lady can do a 10 Week Challenge – survive and stick with it. For me, that in itself is an accomplishment. I have the best intentions to get and stay fit but there always seems to be something in the way but this time it’s working for a variety of reasons. My biggest roadblocks are time and injury. I was super fit in my 20’s then along came the career and raising a family.
I’m making time for myself these days. I’m at class five days a week at 7 AM. They have class starting as early as 5 AM and as late as 6:30 PM. I know that the early risers frequently use the showers at Farrell’s and buzz right off to work still beating the traffic. Good thing I don’t have far to travel to my office in Edina. As for the injury – I had a total knee replacement due to Water Skiing shenanigans about ten years ago and it has just never been the same – I know when the weather is changing by how much my leg hurts. The good news is that the Kick Boxing

and Strength training I’ve had at Farrell’s has helped build me up in the right way. The 10 Week Challenge starts out kind of easy but don't let that fool you. Each day the class whether Kick Boxing or Strength Training addresses a part of your body such as arms, legs, abs -you know the drill. Why it works is that each class takes you to the next level without you really knowing it. Oh, you'll break a good sweat but don't you worry you can and will be just fine. The first thing to do is sign up for the next 10 week session which starts October 10th. You will be provided with wraps and gloves and a student manual to review and record your progress. FXBS will assign each “10-Weeker” a Coach and provide Nutritional counseling, food plans, and Nutrition classes. There are regular outings that all Farrell's members can participate in like 5K's, Tough Mudder etc. And at the end of 10 weeks you get a party and two people will win $1,000 cash for the best improvement. The best part about Farrell’s (after getting good results) is the people there. Lance and Tracy Howard and son Jonathan have partnered up to open this location. They are so kind and inviting which permeates throughout the staff. I’ve made friends I’d never have even met and I am impressed by the wide variety of people (all shapes and sizes and colors just like me) that join me on my quest. Hope to see you soon!

INGREDIENTS
• ½ cup stout beer • 1/4 cup espesso or strong cold brew • 10 ounces 60% bittersweet chocolate chips • 1 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • 3 eggs • 1 cup flour INSTRUCTIONS
• Preheat oven at 250 degrees F. Prepare a 9" X 9" baking pan with parchment paper allowing the paper to hang over the edges and spray with cooking spray. • Bring stout to a boil and reduce to simmer and cook for about 10 minutes or until reduced to ¼ cup. Set aside to cool. • In a double boiler or a small bowl atop a small saucepan filled with 1 inch of water, melt chocolate chips and butter over high heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. • Pour melted chocolate into a medium bowl and cool slightly. Add sugar, vanilla, salt and stout and mix well with a whisk or wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time, mixing just until combined before adding the next egg. • Fold flour into mixture and pour into baking pan. Bake for one hour or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in pan for 2 hours or overnight to firm up for best cutting. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY 42
