Letter from the Editor

It is so fitting that our premiere issue focuses on holidays and giving. That’s precisely the reason why Kim and I decided to start this magazine—to give back to our community. We’re both Boonton Township residents, and while I’ve lived here for ten years, Kim has lived here for twenty-five years. We feel so honored to make a positive contribution to the place we call home.

Our feature story is about the Annual Charity Christmas Tree Sale hosted by Peapack Private Bank & Trust. It’s such a joy driving past this nostalgic setup. This sale is the epitome of small-town spirit. This year, 100% of the proceeds go to the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry in Boonton.

You’ll also get to know Felisha Lynch. She’s a Morris County mom of FIVE cuties, who shows up on Instagram each day sharing her life with a dash of humor. She’s our resident monthly columnist, offering her take on a host of topics with that signature spin only she can provide.

And who doesn’t love LOCAL?  We’ve rounded up the ultimate gift guide, featuring goodies that are right in your own backyard. We love supporting small businesses all year, but holiday shopping locally is something extra special. It gives your gifts a story that any recipient would appreciate.

Lastly, you’ll get to meet US—the two women behind this magazine who are starting their best chapter yet. Kim and I both reached a point where doing something meaningful and fulfilling our dreams was more important than ever. We’ve poured everything we have into this publication and look forward to seeing it grow each month. We so appreciate all of you who are along for the ride.

During this holiday season, we hope you take the time to enjoy those small moments with loved ones. Take your kids to experience a holiday tradition. Even though my kids are now teenagers, we still drive around to look at Christmas lights. We play holiday music in the car and debate which house is the best. It’s an outing that costs nothing, but creates a tradition that hopefully they will carry on with their kids one day.

From all of us at Eastern Morris City Lifestyle Magazine, we welcome you to our PREMIERE issue, and hope each month we can give you the BEST of what our community has to offer.

ANNUAL CHARITY CHRISTMAS TREE SALE RETURNS TO GIVE A LOCAL ORGANIZATION SUPPORT DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Anyone who frequents Boonton and its surrounding towns during the holidays has driven past the Christmas Tree Sale in front of Peapack Private Bank & Trust. It’s charming. It’s a nostalgic small-town tradition. But most people think that a tree company rents the bank’s property for a few weeks to sell trees.

BY

PEAPACK PRIVATE BANK & TRUST

This tree sale is, in fact, the passion project of Peapack Private Bank & Trust President & CEO Doug Kennedy, who also happens to be a Mountain Lakes resident. “When we opened our Boonton location back in 2021, I knew I wanted to bring the Charity Christmas Tree Sale back. Being from the area, I remember the sales held on the property years ago, hosted by the Kiwanis Club. It felt very personal and was a great opportunity for us to give back to the community where we were establishing a new location,” says Kennedy.

What most people also don’t know is that 100% of the proceeds from the tree sale go to a local charity that is selected

each year. The bank’s Facilities Manager, Steve Philip, organizes the order of 250 trees from wholesale tree seller Vincent Russomano, who sources trees from New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. The trees are delivered to Boonton just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Once the trees are delivered, it’s all hands on deck. “Our tree sales are just plain fun. We have a lot of employee involvement, and it essentially turns into a team-building experience for everyone. It is a lot of hard work—we’ve done it in the rain and the snow—but everyone feels really good at the end, knowing they’ve done their part to help the community.

Volunteers helping buyers transport trees home
“It’s an extra bonus that our donations have increased each year.”

It’s an extra bonus that our donations have increased each year,” says Kennedy.

Past recipients include nourish.NJ, Lakeland Hills Family YMCA, Sound Start Foundation, and Fighting Children’s Cancer Foundation. This year, the beneficiary will be the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Pantry located in Boonton. Kennedy says, “At the most basic level, we look for area organizations that are in need. We try to support local when we can and really use the tree sale to generate not only donations, but also awareness for their cause. We are very proud that each year 100% of the proceeds from the sale go directly to our selected beneficiary.

We selected Loaves and Fishes Community Food Pantry because they provide vital support to our neighbors in need.”

The tree sale takes place in front of Peapack Private Bank & Trust at 104 Ely Place in Boonton. It runs for two weekends, November 28th through 30th, and December 5th through 7th. Times of operation are Fridays from 12 PM to 6 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM to 6 PM. Cash, credit, and debit card payments are accepted.

The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is a joint venture of the Boonton United Methodist Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Boonton. It was

founded in 2013 by Annette Thurkauf and has since moved to its larger location at 513 Birch Street in Boonton. They accept monetary and food donations all year long, with more information on their website at http://www.lfcfp.org. Donations of non-perishable food are also being collected at the tree sale.

Kennedy’s hope for the future is, “Since this is our fifth year hosting our Charity Christmas Tree Sale, we are hoping to exceed the $36,000 in donations collected last year. We expect that as this tradition continues each year, more and more residents and businesses will stop to buy a tree, donate, and get to know our beneficiary and the Bank.”

there is always another chapter

Two local moms and business owners join forces to contribute something great to their community

Six months ago, I did something crazy. Better yet, I convinced one of my closest friends to do it with me. Now, we’re having the time of our lives and have never been so happy.

What’s this outlandish “thing” we did? Kim and I left the careers we’d built for decades in pursuit of our true passions and the idea of achieving something bigger. And guess what? We did it. You’re holding it in your hands right now.

Over twenty years ago, I began my career in music journalism, interviewing artists like Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz, which soon led to online content creation. Digital media was quickly becoming the dominant force it is today. Social media was everywhere, and it became a powerful form of storytelling, not only for individuals but for businesses. And it was where I hung my hat for the following 15 years.

My social media management agency, Officially Social, came to fruition, and I couldn’t be prouder of its success. We achieved 500% growth during the first year and managed hundreds of social accounts. My clients—and all that experience—taught me so much; it made me the storyteller I am today. It also left me wanting more. I wanted the opportunity to dig deeper and make a real contribution to my community through those stories.

While I was growing my business, my friend, Kim Cera, was doing the same. She began her career as an IT Recruiter and quickly realized that relationship building and helping people were her gifts. After transitioning to medical sales, she discovered a growing skincare brand and started her own dermatology brand consulting business.

You know how you see skincare consultants who can quit their full-time jobs and achieve massive success, and you think to yourself, who actually does that? Kim Cera does. She ultimately became the third-highest-selling consultant in the country. She thrived on social media and found her love for connecting with people. She became a resource for building her clients’ confidence through skincare.

Two years ago, Kim brought me (reluctantly) to my first networking meeting, where you’re supposed to sit next to someone you don’t know. My insecurities were certainly showing themselves,

“I knew I needed a powerhouse relationship builder to be in this with me—someone who cared about her community and building something meaningful as much as I did. Kim Cera immediately came to mind. I knew she was the perfect person to accompany me on this journey.”

but something incredible happened. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Phil Barone, the Publisher of Wayne Lifestyle Magazine. He spoke about his publication with such enthusiasm, and the magazine was so impressive, that it stayed with me long after the meeting was over. In fact, I didn’t stop thinking about it for over a year.

Officially Social ended up managing social media for Wayne Lifestyle, which was a dream partnership. Along the way, I mentioned to Phil that I would love to have my own magazine. He gave me the encouragement I needed to sell my business—a.k.a. my comfort zone—and take the exciting risk. But I didn’t want to do it alone.

I knew I needed a powerhouse relationship builder to be in this with me—someone who cared about her community and building something

meaningful as much as I did. Kim Cera immediately came to mind. I knew she was the perfect person to accompany me on this journey. When I presented the idea to her, she was in without hesitation.

So here we are. Two middle-aged moms starting over, living our dream to do something meaningful. To use our expertise and give back to the community we love. We thank you for being on this journey with us and for helping us build this special publication, Eastern Morris City Lifestyle.

Marriage

I’m a native of Morris County, and I married my high school sweetheart, Kieran. We’ve spent more years together than apart. It’s always been us against the world, and we keep choosing each other!

Fun

My husband and I go on at least one date night per week and take one trip per year without the kids. It keeps us connected, and reminds us we’re still “us.”

Home

Being a mom and full-time content creator can be a lot, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love making our home feel cozy and lived-in while keeping things functional for five kids.

Holiday Kids

I’m a stay-at-home working mom to five kids under ten. We dreamed of a big family and got just that. Three boys and two girls later, our house is loud, busy, and full of love!

Christmas is my favorite time of year. Seeing it through my kids’ eyes makes it even more magical. We stay in pajamas too long, eat homemade French toast, and soak up every cozy moment together!

Holiday Entertaining Boards

The holidays are here and entertaining is in full swing. If you are looking for the perfect appetizer to easily feed a crowd these simple and beautiful boards are sure to please.

Tips for creating the perfect board:

• Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first.

• Be sure to have enough to fill the space. It is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more.

• Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement.

• Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board

• Fig Jelly

• Honey

• Variety of Cheeses

• Salami or meat of choice

• Olives (provide a variety)

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut

• Grapes, berries, persimmon

• Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

CRAFTING CHEER:

DIY WINTER CRAFTS

ORNAMENT CLUSTERS

SUPPLIES

• 22 gauge wire

• Ornaments of at least 3 varying shades and sizes

• Wire snips

STEP 1

Cut desired length of wire for a cluster, about 24”

STEP 2

Add an ornament about 4” from one end of the wire and twist the wire around the top of the ornament to provide a base for your cluster. Twist about 5 times. You should still have about 4” of wire at the end; you will need it to tie onto your garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 3

Continue adding ornaments to the wire, alternating sizes and colors until you have 4-6” of wire remaining.

STEP 4

Twist the remaining wire around the top of your final ornament 5 times to secure all of your ornaments in place. Making sure to leave at least 4” of wire in place at the end in order to tie onto garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 5

Use the ends of the wire to attach to your holiday item of choice!!

Pro tip: Keep your clusters to the 24” length to keep from getting too heavy and/or having ornaments pop off. Ornaments will pop off at times, but they will still look gorgeous and you can always glue the ornament back onto to the top. Simple, gorgeous, and impactful!
