Welcome to our Spring Home Issue
Home. So much is contained in this little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while it looks different for each of us, the meaning and value for all of us is undeniable.
Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home, we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That, of course, includes the food and drinks, aesthetic and design, and transformation.
"Personally, I love coming home at the end of a day, pouring a glass of wine, and sitting by a fire, or just reading some good daily mantras to relax."
We feel blessed to learn more about the businesses around town and hope this small lens into their lives and work sparks an interest in you, our readers. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to their many stories about design, trends and all things home!
Every month, we hear from our readers who keep our publication longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They hold onto issues for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. And for those who relish in digital, so many share they flip through our issues and read our stories online. We feel proud to create a valued resource in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
We encourage you to continue to support the businesses and nonprofits featured throughout our pages. They create a better community and are instrumental in helping to bring our work to life each month!

HOME: THE RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE OF D. STANLEY DIXON
Atlanta-based architect Stan Dixon has received tremendous media attention since the founding of his firm D. Stanley Dixon Architect, Inc. in 2006. His highly-anticipated debut book showcases thirteen projects from across the country. From a relaxed Jupiter Island coastal retreat to an elegant Englishmanor-inspired South Carolina home, each project varies geographically and stylistically, highlighting various aesthetic components.
OUR WAY HOME: REIMAGINING AN AMERICAN FARMHOUSE
The defined style of cozy and simple living has led to a rise in American farmhouse design in recent years. Interior designer Heide Hendricks

and architect-builder Rafe Churchill show how they have brought twenty-first-century living to their late nineteenth-century New England farmhouse. This husband-and-wife team combined their talents to create a historic home that is both a personal retreat designed for everyday life and a constant source of inspiration for their other projects.

VILLA D'ESTE: LEGEND ON LAKE COMO
In 1568 Tolomeo Gallio commissioned a grand villa overlooking Italy’s magnificent Lake Como. After two centuries in the Gallio family, Villa d’Este became home to multiple members of the aristocracy before being transformed into an elegant five-star resort in 1873. After 150 years of catering to an endless array of famous guests wishing to immerse themselves in “la dolce vita,” Vila d’Este exemplifies a blending of tradition and modernity to create absolute luxury.
PALM BEACH STYLE: THE ARCHITECTURE AND ADVOCACY OF JOHN AND JANE VOLK
In the 1920s, American royalty wanted to establish a winter retreat and show off their newfound wealth. Building grand homes inspired by European palaces, they created one of the world’s most famous resort towns. Commissioned to design over 2,000 projects during his sixty years of practice, John Volk’s legacy as one of the “big five” architects of Palm Beach can now be seen on almost every street.

MEET JENNIFER RAKESTRAW OF CENTURY PARK INTERIORS
ARTICLE BY CATHY JONES
As a child, Jennifer was privy to her Italian mother’s passion for designing and redesigning her home. She painted the walls, put up wallpaper and decorated to establish “happy spaces and happy surroundings” (her mantra). She never held too tightly to any certain “aesthetic” and certainly didn’t bow to the whims of trends. Decades later, Jennifer’s interior design firm, Century Park Interiors, does the same.
Some of life's hardest trials, including divorce and later identity theft, brought Jennifer to her successes today. The loss of an old life and everything she had worked for brought her to her knees.
"I thought, 'If I had a dream and I could do anything, regardless of money, regardless of where I was or what has happened, what would I want?'" says Jennifer.
She envisioned a life working for herself, bringing her dogs to work with her every day. One where she could use her talents to create beautiful spaces like her mother had. Whether it was the mantra or her mother’s ways that stuck with her, Jennifer developed an infatuation with furniture and home decor. She wasn't scared to experiment with textures or forge unlikely pairings. She enrolled herself in design courses,
learned the rules and jumped in, taking on her first few design projects free of charge for anyone who was interested. She quickly developed a reputation in the industry, and Century Park Interiors grew legs.
Like her mother, Jennifer refuses to confine her work to one style. The way she puts it, “We are not fastened to one single design aesthetic. Being able to emulate different designs is what makes a great designer.”
Jennifer doesn’t approach any of her projects with a set goal or look in mind but instead works to uncover each client’s style and bring it to life on their terms. She spends hours getting to know her clients, pulling inspiration and sending questionnaires that give her a better idea of their needs.

“Being able to emulate different designs is what makes a great designer.”
Century Park Interior’s discovery process entails a series of steps before agreeing on a retainer. The process starts with a free discovery call with Jennifer to familiarize herself with each client’s wants and needs, followed by a free questionnaire the client completes based on style preferences. After this, Jennifer hosts what she calls “The First Date,” an official sit-down consultation to meet in person, scope out the space and review photos. She then compiles everything discussed in the first three steps to present a 3D rendering, furniture placement, size indications and sourcing for the project, where the client can choose whether or not to move forward in the design process.
With such an in-depth preliminary process, it’s not surprising Jennifer has mastered the art of replicating a vision. Though she’s done it for dozens of clients, perhaps her most challenging client has been herself as she navigated a recent kitchen and home redesign in her townhouse. After her 26-year marriage ended, the fixer-upper became a saving grace of sorts to her. What started as a flip-and-sell project became a home of eight years and counting.
After taking the time and money to make less noticeable yet vital updates to
the foundation of the townhouse, it took a while before Jennifer got to work on the pretty parts. She spent seven years deciding on her kitchen selections before officially committing to the redesign on demo day. The kitchen’s eye-catching transformation is a testament to her expertise as a designer and a great example of Jennifer’s personal flare.
Though she subscribes to none of her own, Jennifer stays in the know regarding current trends. She’s ecstatic about the industry’s recent adoption of an “anything goes” mindset. According to her, the greys and beiges of modern luxury and farmhouse styles are past. Instead, these modern design elements can and should be mixed with unique and thought-provoking pieces; think eclectic art and funky antiques with captivating backstories.
Trendy and timeless are merging, making way for an era of “no rules,” and no one is better equipped to bring it to life than Jennifer. From the ever-changing walls of her childhood home to Century Park Interior’s commitment to bringing any and every vision to life, it’s a sentiment that will always ring true to her.

Experience Japan’s Three Sides
TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHY JONES

“Europe’s high-class resorts and walkable towns may cater to vacationers, but Asia’s vast mountain ranges, sleepless urban centers and immersive cultural experiences were made for adventurers.
European Summers reigned supreme in 2023, but I'm proposing springtime in Asia as 2024's next travel trend. Western travelers have overlooked the alluring jungles, snowcapped peaks, cherry blossom streets and neon nights of countries like Japan for too long. Europe's high-class resorts and walkable towns may cater to vacationers, but Asia's mountain ranges, urban epicenters and cultural experiences were made for adventurers.
Streetlights beep as thousands pour into the world's busiest street crossing. Just blocks away, a gong chime rings out across sacred temple grounds in tandem. High-speed bullet trains (Shinkansen) speed through rural countryside, where hills and valleys roll in waves of green and the sharp, pointy silhouette of Mt. Fuji reigns over its surroundings. Everywhere, old juxtaposes new.
High cultural standards require dedication and a country-wide effort, yet the Japanese have no qualms. Respect is a foundation of Japanese culture; its presence is palpable across the island. It manifests in the air of reverence at holy sites, in grandiose displays of untouched nature, and in the smiling faces of strangers who welcome us to their country, eager to share their language, their snacks and their culture.
The island is a mosaic of mountains, rice fields, waterfalls, cityscapes, oceans and temples. Luckily, exploration is easy in a country that has managed to eliminate most everyday problems. Split your visit between these cities to experience three vastly different sides of Japan.
TOKYO
You simply can't visit Japan without stopping in the world's biggest city.
Establish a home base in one of Tokyo's central districts. Shibuya offers attractions like Shibuya Crossing, Shibuya Sky and Harajuku (a kawaii s hopping street coated in copious amounts of pastels). Shinjuku delivers world-class nightlife
among Kabukicho's famed neon lights and hidden gems like Golden Gai, a maze of minibars and Izakayas. Ginza, Tokyo's shopping district, is lined with Flagships of Japan's biggest brands like UNIQLO, Muji Global and Shu Uemura.
After a few days in Tokyo's heart, venture out for unbeatable experiences like the Cherry Blossom (Sakura)-lined banks of the Meguro River Then, witness a dazzling display of a million lights, wade through a Koi fish pond and step into outer space at teamLAB Planets. Before departing Tokyo, visit Asakusa's Senso-ji Temple for your first taste of traditional Japan.
KYOTO
The cobblestone villages, abundant greenery and peaceful lull of Kyoto starkly contrast Tokyo's fastpaced streets. Steeped in tradition and reminiscent of ancient Japan, Kyoto appears frozen in time, a modern city holding tightly to its roots.
Ancient cultural customs are on full display. Green tea is cherished and celebrated in the world's Matcha capital. Tea ceremonies happen daily on the woven tatami mats of temple grounds. Motchitsuki, the art of making mochi, occurs in shops and cafes. Geisha, storied performers of Japan's olden days, known to don traditional garb and porcelain makeup, walk the streets in the evening, illuminated by lantern light. With only 300 left in existence, Geisha sightings are truly serendipitous.
Mountains rise in every direction surrounding Arashiyama, where visitors can paddle the Katsura River and get lost among towering green stocks of bamboo groves. Gion offers Kyoto's best nightlife, known for lantern-lined streets and Kawara rooftops. The Higashiyama ward is home to world-class sightseeing. Its Kiyomizudera Temple spills into the cobblestone Ninen Zaka Path, boasting a picturesque view of the Tower of Yasaka , depicted in movies, photos and artwork worldwide.

OSAKA
Arrive hungry in Osaka. Many consider it "Japan's Kitchen." The tempting aromas of Izakayas (dive bars) and street food stalls will lure you out, while some of the best shopping in the country will hold you captive in Osaka's energy-filled streets.
We were lucky to experience the Shitenno-ji Temple Market during our stay, which happens monthly on the temple grounds. It was a welcome, treasure-filled alternative to the raucous shopping streets we'd conquer later: streets like Shinsaibashi along the Dotonbori Canal. There, we splurged on anything from designer to Japanese brands like UNIQLO and GU to local shops.
There's no shortage of street food like Okonomiyaki , Takoyaki , Taiyaki , Wagyu beef and
freshly prepared sushi in Osaka's streets. Indulge at Kuromon Ichiba Market, a 580-meter food hall with over 150 vendors. Then, hit Shinsekai, one of Osaka's most unique streets. The strip's endless games, free-flowing Sake and delicious street eats create a masterful fusion of sights, sounds and smells sure to leave a lasting imprint of your time in Osaka.
As I peered out the windows of the Shinkansen whizzing me back to the streets of Tokyo and, eventually, back home, Japan sent me off with one last breathtaking sight, a perfect view of Mt. Fuji's glistening peak. I took it as a reminder of the beauty to be discovered and made a silent promise to continue my exploration of Japan and Asia's many marvels.

TALES From the BACK PORCH
ARTICLE BY CATHY JONES
Some of our most timeless tales originate on the back porch. Glaring summer afternoons spent sipping cocktails; cozy autumn nights accompanied by a roaring fire, friends and family; early spring mornings catching the first glimpse of the sun, nose tipped into a coffee cup. These moments are what make a house a home and a porch a sanctuary.
As we head into warmer months, it's worth noting Saturday morning cartoons, weeknight dinners and afternoon playtime sessions will all move outside or onto the porch. Set yourself up with a relaxing repose in the form of a bed swing. Atlanta Bed Swings is a Marietta-based custom bed swing manufacturer ready to help create your dream porch. Through one-onone consultations, they have designed and created over 3,500 bed swings across the South, making them experts at their craft.
"Late winter and early spring are wonderful times to refresh outdoor porch living spaces," says Erin Tice, owner of Atlanta Bed Swings.
They specialize in customization. Everything from frame style and color to hanging hardware to over 2,000 custom fabrics made in their Marietta upholstery

“A bed swing takes center stage in any space, so the visual appeal is certain.”
shop is fully customizable, along with swing size and bracing technique.
The swing's cushions and pillow covers are removable, allowing for easy maintenance and seasonal style swaps. Innovative moisture-blocking inserts prevent mold and mildew buildup and make fabric changes seamless. According to Erin, it's common for customers to trade their bright colors and dainty florals of spring for emerald hues and bold statement patterns in the fall. As a style virtuoso, she recommends starting with a neutral base and building upon it with pops of colors and subtle patterns.
Don't just add a bed swing and call it quits, though. A porch is an extension of the home, and with luxury furniture like a bed swing comes endless design opportunities. Add porch sectionals and glider chairs as finishing touches, which the same wonderful company can completely customize to match your swing. When in doubt, rely on your bed swing to command the room.
As Erin puts it, "A bed swing takes center stage in any space, so the visual appeal is certain."

Answer the Call. Laura Elleby's Guide to Mountain Living. The Mountains Are Calling
Home 34
A Tommy Wosyluk
Sometimes, the only cure for repetitive routines and hustle culture is wide open space. When the urge to run freely, breathe deeply and live boundlessly ultimately takes over, North Georgia's rural landscapes and mountain villages are ready to welcome you.
As a realtor and resident of Blue Ridge for the last decade, Laura Elleby is a mountain living advocate. She spends her workday traipsing rustic, open floor plans and assessing panoramic porch vistas of north Georgia's most sought-after retreats. Her work with Compass, the country's number one real estate brokerage, has created endless opportunities for her through a network of agents and global exposure.
"I'm so fortunate to work alongside the most talented builders in the country whose craftsmanship is unparalleled," says Laura.
Tommy Wosyluk of Wosyluk Construction is one of these builders. His homes feature a unique blend of modern flair, rustic beauty and industrial minimalism filled with nature-inspired textures and organic warmth.
Luxury in real estate provides a lifestyle tailored to residents’ preferences and well-being and ensures they feel truly pampered and content at home. To Laura, it goes beyond shape and size. From cozy cabins to
sprawling estates, her focus is on the overall experience of her clients.
Whether you're ready to relocate, in search of an off-season escape, or simply looking to appreciate the wilderness already awaiting in your backyard, a few simple touches can transform any humble abode into an alpine retreat.
"Transforming a home into a mountain home involves incorporating elements that evoke a sense of natural beauty, tranquility, and rugged elegance," says Laura.
WORK WITH NATURAL MATERIALS:
Whether you build the foundation from items like logs or natural stone or find ways to incorporate them in more minor details, rustic elements allude to the natural wonders beckoning just outside your door. Laura notes a range of materials that achieve the effect. Eclectic items like textured fabrics, exposed brick, and log cabin walls create a warm and antiquated vibe, while bold hardware made from stone or metal adds character to otherwise stately dwellings.
Logs and stone can be used as interior walls or exterior cladding to surround a home in rustic elegance. Brick fireplaces are classic and cozy, found in most cabins

and cottages. Elements like rough-cut stone and wood beams are slightly less common but known to add personality. Laura suggests wood beams with prominent grain and knots for a sense of craftsmanship and rough-cut stone in small, sporadic spaces like a kitchen backsplash, bathroom walls or outdoor patios. And make sure to extend natural materials beyond architecture. Wool, leather and faux fur add tactile appeal to furniture and upholstery, while wrought iron incorporates an industrial component in light fixtures and railings.
"By embracing unique textures, mountain homes can achieve a distinctive blend of natural beauty, tactile richness, and timeless character that reflects the spirit of mountain living," says Laura.
EMBRACE YOUR SURROUNDINGS:
Creating a beautiful space takes little work when home is a brushstroke on nature's canvas. Bringing day-to-day activities outside is just one modern luxury of mountain living. Adapting your lifestyle and home to embrace your alpine surroundings is just as important.
Start by relying on natural lighting. This can look like copious floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights and open doors. Sunlight introduces a welcome serotonin boost to every room, natural insulation and a constant light source that doesn't rely on power. But windows can also tie in surrounding scenery such as lush greenery, open mountain ranges and babbling brooks as artwork. There's no need to purchase elusive paintings when the panoramas outside do the job just fine.
Perhaps the most gravitational aspect of mountain living is the renewed sense of freedom that comes with boundless terrain and crisp air. Remember to live a little in your mountain home. The cold waters of nearby rivers provide a refreshing morning wake-up call. Narrow, foot-stomped paths lead to whimsical sanctuaries. And the beaming moonlight and glistening constellations of open skies make for a magical nightlight.
EXPERIMENT WITH OUTDOOR LIVING:
By embracing natural surroundings and incorporating elements that enhance the outdoor experience, residents can fully immerse themselves in the beauty and tranquility of mountain living while enjoying the comforts of a well-designed outdoor living space.
Blue Ridge's gorgeous vistas, sounds of nature and mild climate make spending more time outside desirable and simple. Sunrooms, wraparound porches and acres of wild land are all viable places to stage outdoor living spaces. Dream beyond just rocking chairs and wooden picnic tables!

A Keith Sumner inspired build
Experimenting with outdoor living can create a versatile and tranquil environment catering to entertainment and relaxation. Here's how to create a few common outdoor living spaces:
Outdoor Kitchen: Design a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, countertops, sink, and storage. Use durable and weather-resistant materials such as stainless steel and stone for easy maintenance and longevity.
Fire Pit: Position a fire pit as a central focal point for gathering and relaxation. Surround it with cozy seating options such as outdoor sofas, lounge chairs and built-in benches for a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
Meditation Space: Designate a secluded area for meditation and mindfulness practice, such as a tranquil garden nook, a shaded pergola, or a dedicated meditation platform with panoramic views.
LAURA’S TIPS:
• Ensure seamless integration and flow between the outdoor kitchen, fire pit and meditation space for easy navigation and connectivity.
• Use pathways, landscaping, and natural features to create a cohesive layout.
• Incorporate natural elements such as wood, stone, and native plants to harmonize with the outdoor surroundings.
• Consider multi-functional design elements, such as built-in seating with hidden storage, convertible furniture and adaptable lighting, to maximize flexibility and usability.

Their cooking process is unique. They start by sourcing and preparing fine, fresh ingredients in-house. As for the meats, steaks are custom-aged for anywhere from 18 to 24 days on-site and handcarved daily, creating an unmatched texture and flavor. All seafood is freshly caught. Don’t miss best-selling entrees like Kona Crusted Bone-in DryAged NY Strip with Shallot Butter; Porcini Rubbed Bone-In Ribeye with 15-Year Aged Balsamic, or Sliced Filet Mignon with Cipollini Onions, Wild Mushrooms and Fig Essence to experience the mouthwatering results of such techniques.
While their pan-seared and oven-roasted proteins tend to be the star of the show, the rest of The Capital Grille's menu items, from crowd-pleasing appetizers to complementary side dishes to indulgent desserts hand-picked by expert chefs, lend themselves to the restaurant’s culinary excellence. The sides and appetizers range from classic favorites like mashed potatoes to unique dishes like Pan-Fried Calamari with Hot Chili Peppers and Lobster Mac ‘N’ Cheese. Meanwhile, desserts like The Capital Grille Cheesecake, brûlée style, and Coconut Cream Pie are baked fresh by the in-house pastry chef every morning.
As for the bubbles, the sommelier-curated wine selection features 350 of some of the world's most highly allocated and sought-after wines. For an expert opinion on which varietals may match your preference, the knowledgeable waitstaff is more than happy to offer suggestions. Those who prefer craft cocktails should start the night with a Stoli Doli Martini, a signature drink made with Stoli Vodka and Dole pineapple.
In anticipation of sunny spring mornings and holiday gatherings, The Capital Grille will offer chef-prepared brunch specials on Mother’s Day and Easter. Families and friends can choose from bright and hearty fare like Lobster Frittata with butter-poached lobster tails, a 14-ounce Bone-In Dry Aged NY Strip and Eggs, or an eight-ounce Center Cut Filet Mignon with White Cheddar Hash Browns and house-made Blueberry Bread.
When it comes to fine dining, it’s all in the details. From thoughtfully hung Art Deco chandeliers to personalized service to a dedication to sourcing fresh ingredients, The Capital Grille is sprinkled in them. Spring Cleaning Made Easier with Closet Designs & More
Amidst the cobweb clearing, window washing and dresser dusting of spring cleaning, take a step back and assess your space's functionality. The spring season isn't just for freshening but tidying as well. Eradicating clutter, creating systems and assigning everything a proper storage space is key to making your home work for you.
What started as a DIY project revamping his granddaughter's closet opened Bill Fletcher's eyes to a need for more personalization in the design industry. Thus, Closet Designs & More was born. Bill, alongside his daughter and son-in-law, Chelsea and Jason Lanitelo, began a journey to offer completely customizable storage solutions. Today, Chelsea and Jason are still at its helm and as passionate as ever about enhancing their customers' lives by creating eye-catching and efficient closets and storage spaces.
"A functional, well-organized closet means saving time getting ready every day," says Chelsea. "The goal of spring cleaning should not only be to remove items you don't wear as often but to organize it in a way that works for your lifestyle."

“We take a lot of pride in spending time to get the closet layout perfect. Functionality is our priority!”
Before changing things on a whim, get familiar with current trends. According to Chelsea, black and gold matte hardware is a popular, stylish element that doesn't create a distraction. New products like floating shelves and glass island tops make it easy to display your proudest possessions while keeping things cohesive. Or opt for unique enhancements like uplighting to brighten spaces in a more sophisticated way than typical overhead lighting.
Then, the design process starts with an in-home visit. The Closet Designs & More team evaluates and measures the space, noting lifestyle and preferences. Each project is approached with fresh eyes, careful to accommodate and customize where needed. Before beginning the redesign, clients receive a finalized rendering of the finished product and an invitation to visit the showroom for an editing session and see the style elements in person.
"We take a lot of pride in spending time to get the closet layout perfect. Functionality is our priority!" says Chelsea.
Confident in their promise to deliver only the highest grade materials, Closet Designs & More is one of the only companies in the industry offering a lifetime warranty on all products. Every completed closet is guaranteed to streamline your morning routine, declutter the mess that tends to end up hidden behind doors and transform dull storage areas into tasteful spaces.

““As Lexie’s parents, we have been blessed with seeing miracles firsthand,” - proud mom Amy.
In a world where beauty is often confined to the surface, 16-year-old Lexie Delaney of Calhoun emerges as a powerful voice for kindness and a passionate advocate for the beauty that lies within each of us.
Lexie admits, “There are times I wish I could look different or that I would not get bullied.”
Lexie was born with Treacher-Collins Syndrome, an inherited condition where bones in the face do not form. She’s been in and out of hospitals all her life. 211 procedures and surgeries so far. All of this was too much for her biological parents, so Amy and Derron Delaney adopted her, joining their family of 10 children, six with special needs. Lexie’s story mirrors the challenges faced by Auggie Pullman, the fictional character from the popular book and movie “Wonder."
According to Lexie, “When I was first born, I didn’t look so great. I was also mute because I

What started with identifying five “blue zones” around the world— where people are living longer, as well as enjoying a higher quality of life in their elder years—has now also evolved into proactively creating ecosystems where our communities engage in setting the standard for clean health.
Buettner’s first cookbook, The Blue Zones Kitchen, is a fantastic resource, featuring ingredients and cooking methods that can increase longevity, wellness, and mental health. The recipes also include lifestyle tips such as proper portion sizes and the best times to eat dinner. Plus, check out his additional seven books that dig deep into everything from the exact foods you should eat to how your circle of friends and family can influence your quality of life.
Every time you go out to eat, you will consume an extra 300 calories that are laden with more sodium, sugar, and oil than eating at home. “Get your hands on a plant-based cookbook, pick a dozen recipes, and cook those with your family on Sundays.
