Family matters

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.

This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children create and the significant impact they make on our communities.

Children are not only our hope for a brighter tomorrow but also the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in limitless ways. Kids represent our hardest work, most meaningful accomplishments and yes, sometimes, our greatest challenges. We are excited to highlight how our community serves, celebrates and engages children, as well as the lifestyle wonderful our local community offers.

This issue also pays tribute to our pets. This special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, protection, selflessness, essential life skills and the value of nurturing environments. We simply cannot ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends. This bond can be extraordinarily deep, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, companionship and safety. There are many ways to get involved, love, foster and care for pets as shared on page 36.

We are super excited to highlight the most pet friendly communities in Georgia, how CBD products are used to take care of our pets in time of need and help ensure their health on page 16 and how families in their own backyards have created robust farms filled with all kinds of animals and summertime fun.

What children and pets share in common is they need us. Our love, care and attention helps to ensure a life filled with special meaning and safety. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life.

Cheers!

THE ABCS OF CBD

You and your fur babies can benefit from this wonder compound

In recent years, you’ve all probably heard about the benefits of the compound CBD, which is derived from the hemp plant and also produced through our own body’s endocannabinoid system. While we can produce CBD naturally, a supplement is often needed these days to give our nervous systems and immune systems a big boost.

Fortunately, those of us in East Cobb have an elite shop led by experts to source the very best CBD products. Your CBD Store, the largest retailer franchise in the world, is backed and overseen by plant scientists and carries the first USDA-certified organic products. “All this being said, Your CBD Store East Cobb is a locally owned single franchise store, which values educating our local community more than anything else,” adds store manager Nathan Abbott.

For the pets and family issue, East Cobb Lifestyle caught up with Abbott and the rest of the store team to find out more about CBD.

DID POPULARITY OF CBD FOR HUMANS AND PETS HAPPEN AT DIFFERENT TIMES?

The Endocannabinoid System was discovered in the 1970s. In 2018, when the Farm Bill legalized hemp nationwide, the knowledge was already rooted in the industry. Therefore, CBD products for both humans and pets were released at the same time.

Manager Nathan Abbott with a happy customer

WHAT ARE THE KEY BENEFITS OF CBD FOR OUR PETS?

Studies have shown that CBD may have a variety of positive effects for pets, including managing pain, anxiety, controlling seizures and reducing inflammation.

WHAT HAVE YOUR CUSTOMERS SHARED WITH YOU ABOUT HOW CBD HELPS THEIR PETS?

The majority of our pet customers have shared that it helps with anxiety, mobility, pain and overall quality of life. Often, we hear that it really helps with pets suffering from storm anxiety, skin irritation and grooming anxiety. Our Chillin Out treats, which fly off the shelves, are great for these kinds of issues and situations.

One of our most loyal customers uses CBD for both themselves and their 13-year-old dog. In their experience, the difference is like night and day. The dog gets around the house with ease, no longer gets anxious and is all-around happier and healthier. Additionally, they were able to even replace some of the dog’s medication with our CBD pet products.

WHAT FORMS OF CBD DO YOU OFFER?

We offer a wide range of products for humans and their pets. People love our gummies and water solubles for relaxing and unwinding. Many of our oil-based tinctures are USDA certified for both our human lines and pet lines. We even have seltzers for a non-alcoholic, zero-sugar, refreshing treat with just five calories.

We offer free consultations and love to educate! Our staff has more than a decade of experience in the industry, which is very uncommon, especially here in Georgia. We welcome you and your fur babies alike to our store.

BACKYARD PARADISE

Kory and Lindsey Rykman gave their backyard plenty of thought, knowing the space would serve not only as a place to unwind at the end of the day or week, but also as a gathering spot for family and friends. Long-time Atlantans with deep roots in the Cobb area, the couple has resided in Marietta since 2014. Their current home is their second home – and most likely their forever home. The family desired a property with a generous amount of land, and the original three acres were serendipitously expanded after the next-door neighbor sold off two acres of her own.

“When we were offered to purchase the land next door, we were very happy for our growing family to be able to stretch their legs in the abundant space,” Kory says. “Now, with almost five acres, we find it hard to ever leave such a unique piece of property in East Cobb. When we purchased this house, there was nothing here; the woods pretty much came up to the deck.”

The Rykmans got right to work transforming their lush acreage into the ideal outdoor retreat. First, they leveled out almost an acre of trees behind their home with the intention of adding a large swimming pool. Next, a lounge area with a fire pit and couches,

plus a covered bar and grilling area, were added. Many people might think that’s all it takes to create a dream backyard, but this family had yet another vision. “Fifty yards of grass, perfect for soccer and volleyball, was another important must-have on our wish list — we are outside often!”

Kory comments.

The humans aren’t the only ones savoring life at the Rykman property. A six-stall barn with a wash rack, feeding room with hot/cold water, three pastures and a chicken coop ensure the family’s horses, goats, donkey and chickens all feel at home,

too. Most of the animals have intriguing backstories — Lindsey shares that the oldest horse, a 25-year-old Morgan, holds a Florida State Champion Sulky horse medal and now lives quite a cushy life with her goat buddies, in a pasture all their own.

“The miniature ponies are retired from a mobile petting zoo, and the chickens are a slight obsession of mine,” laughs Lindsey. “You just can’t have too many chickens!”

Though the backyard took two years to finish and the interior of the home was also a lengthy process, the Rykmans are thrilled with their results. It's no small feat to

renovate a home from the 1980s, they assure me. In fact, they would caution friends against buying something in need of renovations unless they are fully invested.

“This backyard was not easy to put together,” Kory admits. “And, like most women, my wife is particular about design and what she wants. It’s also extremely stressful living with construction. If I could go back, I’d have everything planned out and all materials purchased and on-site before beginning construction. We ended up waiting on most things to be delivered, which wasted precious time.”

While the Rykman home’s backyard now elevates the value of the property, the family agrees that their personal enjoyment is the greatest value of all.

“At 5 p.m. we can make a cocktail, enjoy a glass of wine, grill out with premium cuts of fresh meats from NY Butcher Shoppe, jump in the pool — there’s a distinct difference between work and play,” Kory says. “I play soccer in a competitive adult league, and I’ve invited my teammates and their spouses to the pool. We’ve also hosted birthday parties here, and almost every weekend we have a gathering with our family.”

We are thankful to our talented partners and friends for the beautiful tablescape created by Jeni Rakestraw, Owner, Century Park Interiors using beautiful blooms from Flowers of Marietta. Delicous edibles from New York Butcher Shoppe and Schmoo Pies and refreshing wines from Rodney Strong help create memorable backyard settings.

OUR TOWN | ARTS + CULTURE SafePath’s Dedication to Keeping Kids Safe Community leaders invest time and treasure 24

PROTECTING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Countless children in communities across our country, regardless of ethnic, socioeconomic or religious background, have suffered from abuse. In fact, one in 10 children experiences Child Sexual Abuse and Assault (CSAA) nationally. SafePath, Cobb County’s first and only Children’s Advocacy Center, fights this epidemic that threatens the safety and security of children across the country.

SafePath began its journey toward preserving and protecting the rights of Cobb County children in 1983, and shortly after, Jinger Robins, CEO,  joined the team. She got to work certifying the organization by the state and under the National Children’s Alliance enabling SafePath to open its Children's Advocacy Center. After five years, SafePath helped pass child endangerment laws in Georgia. Today, they aim to reduce trauma in abused children through intervention, investigation, prosecution and treatment.

They provide medical services, intervention and behavioral therapy to children who have suffered abuse, all for free. Meanwhile, professional

help, including DFAX, law enforcement and mental health providers, are always on-site.

SafePath also incorporates small, intentional touches that sometimes make the biggest difference in a child’s experience. Take Glinda, SafePath’s community service dog, and her incredible breakthrough with a special needs child, for example. After SafePath staff tried everything to encourage the overwhelmed child to participate in an interview, one last effort made by Glinda was successful. “I’ve realized Glinda can often do things for these children that we humans can’t,” explains Jinger.

With Cobb County growing in population and diversity every day, SafePath works to keep its promise of protection for every Cobb County child. Jinger dreams of a future where all community leaders and legislators understand and prioritize the safety of children. Community members can contribute to the mission of SafePath in many ways. Donations are always welcome on SafePath’s website. “We are very excited about partnering with SafePath and helping them

fulfill their mission of ‘A Community Free of Child Abuse,” says SafePath partner Bill Watson of JRM Management.

Those looking to help in other ways can complete child abuse prevention training, join a community group that leads volunteer efforts and, most importantly, be aware of the signs of child abuse to report suspicious behavior.

Together we can make Cobb County a safe place for today's children and tomorrow's leaders to grow.

KNOW THE SIGNS:

As kids across East Cobb prepare for a new school year, SafePath aims to keep those kids safe, comfortable and trauma-free. They urge Parents, teachers and other child supervisors to stay alert. While child abuse is a sad reality our community still faces, the school season can be a key time to identify signs of abuse and fight to prevent further abuse.

Remain vigilant to these telltale signs of abuse:

1. Crossing boundaries - Offenders are often seen pressing boundaries but are rarely caught in the act. If you see a boundary being crossed, describe the inappropriate behavior to the perpetrator. Implementing family rules about when and how adults should engage with your children is a great way to be proactive.

2. Inappropriate touch - Teaching kids bodily autonomy lets them know it is ok to say “no” to any behavior that makes them uncomfortable. Additionally, be on the lookout for inappropriate touches, such as hugging or placing an arm around a child in situations where these are unnecessary.

3. Monitor online behaviorUnfortunately, as the internet becomes a bigger part of childhood, so do the chances of abuse. Monitor the apps your children use and who they communicate with when online. You can also set limits to when and where they can use their devices.

FUR-EVER HOMES

When Governor Kemp took office in 2019, the new First Lady of Georgia, Marty Kemp, immediately got to work on causes close to her heart. While the First Lady’s efforts to end human trafficking and support survivors have been a highlight of the Kemp administration, her work promoting adoption has also been a defining feature of the Kemp family’s time in the Governor’s Mansion.

Georgia First Lady makes pets a priority

On four separate occasions, the grounds of the Mansion have been transformed for the Adoption Day and Georgia Grown Festival, helping 120 dogs, 7 cats, and 1 hamster find loving homes. Adoption groups and shelters from across the state are invited to bring their pets, and the front lawn is filled with dogs and cats ready to be adopted. At this one-stop shop, Georgians can easily

meet their next furry friend and learn how they can help support the mission of humane societies and rescue groups.

In addition to the focus on adoption, these events double as the Georgia Grown Festival, showcasing the many products Georgia producers are creating and educating young attendees on where their food comes from. “Maggie the Cow” has been a particularly popular participant, providing a hands-on look at dairy cows. The Mansion itself has grown to reflect the diversity of Georgia agriculture, as chickens from the “First Flock” provide fresh eggs, native flora populate the grounds, and honeybees of the “First

Hive” produce honey available for sale during tours. Additionally, all food from the Mansion kitchen is made using Georgia Grown ingredients, providing visitors from across the state and nation a taste of Georgia they won’t soon forget.

In the coming days, the First Lady will again be welcoming Georgians to the Mansion for the latest Adoption Day and Georgia Grown Festival. With tours available throughout the week and annual events such as the Easter Egg Hunt and Christmas Tree Lighting on the calendar, the doors of the People’s House are open and helping Georgians create memories that will last a lifetime.

FOUR-LEGGED FAMILY CARE

Providence Veterinary Clinic is a trusted name in Cobb

Dr. Taylour Welborn gets her love for medicine and for animals honestly. The Milton, Georgia native was brought up in a household with plenty of pets, plus a father who worked as a surgeon. “My dad was a human doctor, a neurosurgeon,” she says. “I saw how he impacted everyone in the community’s lives — how people would come up and thank him in the grocery store. From an early age, I knew I wanted to do something in medicine and combine it with my love for animals.”

Sure enough, her first clinical position after college solidified her career path. Dr. Welborn dove head-first into veterinary medicine, and when the time came to open her practice — a longtime personal dream—she was fortunate to work out a deal with Dr. Sue Trinh, who had decided to retire. Some of the previous staff stayed on board, including Dr. Caroline Horne, and the resulting practice is a combination of veterinarians and vet assistants who care deeply about the well-being of our fourlegged family members.

“I love working at Providence because of the people who work here, the clients that come here

and because we have the best patients,” Dr. Horne comments. “I became a veterinarian because I loved animals as a young child, but over the years of practicing, I appreciate the relationships with both the owners and the pets equally, which develop over the years.”

“My stellar team is part of the reason I look forward to work every day, and I couldn’t do what I do without them,” adds Dr. Haley McNulty. “I have the best mentors who work together in helping with challenging cases, especially with me being a newer veterinarian.”

Providence went through some aesthetic changes after Dr. Welborn purchased the clinic. Opening the space, brightening it up and making it a welcoming place for dogs, cats and humans was the goal. Fortunately, Dr. Welborn's sister, Ashton Wilson, is a gifted interior designer with an eye for detail.

“Renovations were about a six or eight month process,” says Dr. Welborn. “We added an exam room, so we have four now. We redid the floors and ceilings and lights; we wanted it to be pleasing and relaxing. My sister picked everything because I trust her taste!”

“This clinic embraces the power of light and color to enhance its overall ambience,” adds Wilson. “By utilizing one of my favorite whites, ‘Alabaster’ by Sherwin Williams, the

walls and ceilings are now bathed in a luminous glow, giving the illusion of more space. Thoughtful floor plan reconfigurations, updated materials and carefully chosen furniture pieces round out the complete design transformation. The finished result is a refined environment that effortlessly balances functionality and aesthetic appeal.”

A typical day at Providence is busy, with cats and dogs getting check-ups and surgeries and the four doctors trading off who does what each day. In the exam rooms, animals are seen every half-hour for checkups. Meanwhile, in the surgery rooms, animals may be getting spayed or neutered, having c-sections or having emergency surgeries, according to Dr. Welborn, who admits she prefers those days in surgery—perhaps inspired by her father’s profession. “I’d rather do surgeries,” she shares, smiling. “It sounds unusual, but surgeries are rewarding.”

“Our clients have such a unique bond with their family pets, and they take care of their fur babies so well,” adds Dr. Blakelee Price. “Their loving nature only further drives our passion for veterinary medicine.”

From Pool to School

Three ways to prep for success as kids head back to the classroom

Picture this: It’s 11:00 a.m. on a Tuesday in late July, the AC has been cranked to full-blast for over a month, the kids are still sleeping, and absolutely no one has alarm clocks, bus stops or test prep on their mind.

Too often, we toss preparation out the window in the weeks leading up to school, resulting in a rude awakening that first morning back. The back-toschool season can mess with our minds, bodies and brains, so it’s important to prioritize each in the weeks leading up to that fateful first 6:00 a.m. alarm. So, we’ve consulted with local health experts to get their tips and tricks for curbing schooltime stress in your household.

1. “Establish a Routine” - Dr. Janet Lund & Ally Bernstein, Archer Behavioral Health  “Fostering a safe and open environment for your child to express themselves is crucial.” - Ally Bernstein

According to the Archer Behavioral Health team, introducing routines before school starts is the key to school readiness. Get your child excited about creating practical morning and nighttime routines. Let them pick out their clothes, choose how they

complete tasks, set their alarms and then practice it for a few weeks.

Not only does this give time to get acclimated, but it encourages problem-solving skills and boosts confidence. Giving your child the responsibility of creating a routine can turn dreaded school mornings into a fun, exciting challenge. “By actively involving your child in the development of routines, you empower them to take ownership and, as a result, minimize potential resistance,” explains Ally.

2. “Talk About It” - Amy Head, New Perspectives for Life “Creating strategies ahead of time will help children and parents feel empowered and prepared to manage all of the transitions that come with going back to school!” - Amy

It sounds simple, but creating and talking through a simple pro/con (or excited/nervous) list can help tremendously. Amy recommends ranking each item from most to least nervous/excited and then brainstorming some ideas to ease the stress of the child’s top two nervous items. They get their thoughts out on paper and realize that plenty of exciting things come with school too!

MENTAL WELLBEING | EDUCATION
42

Implementing strategies like pro/con lists for worries is also empowering and useful lifelong. It teaches kids that it’s possible to break down what may feel like one big worry into smaller, more manageable ones.

3. “Be Active!” - Julie Sandidge, Club Pilates

“Exercise releases endorphins which help to elevate our mood.” - Julie Sandidge

Early wake-up times, workload and long days can cause parents and kids to start dragging just days into the school year, but getting your heart rate up and your blood flowing with a quick morning exercise can reduce fatigue when adjusting to a new routine.

“Exercise that includes a mind-body connection such as Pilates is even better as it helps us get out of our heads and focus on our bodies,” says Julie.

The best way to reap these benefits (and continue to reap them) is consistency. Hold yourself (and your kids) accountable by getting workout buddies or signing up for classes like Pilates and see how energized you start to feel!

LEARN THE FACTS ABOUT INSURANCE COVERAGE WITH HEATHER BORLENGHI

HEATHER BORLENGHI

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN INSURANCE?

My father was in the Air Force for years. We were constantly moving, and my mother needed to contribute to our income. After a move to Ramstein, Germany, she discovered her love for helping people with their health and life insurance. I watched and admired how hard my mom worked — in those days, she had to drive through village after village for appointments in the evenings. I never thought that I would be in the same profession she was in 30 years later, but her work ethic left an impression on me.

These days, I’m blessed with my own family, consisting of my husband, a 17-year-old recent high school graduate, 13-year-old twins, one overweight yellow labrador and two ridiculously cute guinea pigs named Pepe and Rudy. Having a houseful and a busy family helps me to relate to my clients and understand their needs. I now know this is where I want to be, and I am able to help my clients with the right coverage for their own families.

EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF LIFE INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR A FAMILY.

Life insurance is one of the most important coverages you can have. It can protect your family from debt in the event the household income earner passes away. Life insurance can also cover expenses for the ever-growing costs of a burial. Even if a family has assets, the surviving members won't want to endure complex paperwork or a home sale during that tough time. Additionally, life insurance can ensure kids or other family members go to college, or it can be given to grandchildren as a gift.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR WORKING WITH A NEW CLIENT?

New clients can choose to discuss their needs with me on the phone, on video, at an appointment at our storefront in Sandy Springs or even somewhere else if Sandy Springs is not convenient. I enjoy getting to know people and figuring out the best strategy for their situation and budget.

The first time I talk with you, I take time to gather the information I need to research different avenues for coverage. We then set up an appointment to go over the possibilities and answer all your questions.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD EAST COBB LIFESTYLE READERS KNOW?

Do not wait to give me a call and discuss your options. I have heard horror stories of spouses being left with nothing to pay the mortgage and the bills after a loved one passes unexpectedly. I always like to remind clients that each of us is only a day away from being uninsurable for most products. While you are young and healthy, you can lock in better rates. DOGGONE GOOD NEWS

BLUE RIDGE AND JEKYLL ISLAND RATED AMONG MOST DOG-FRIENDLY VACATION DESTINATIONS IN 2023

In recent years, there has been a marked surge in pet owners searching for vacation options that not only cater to human comfort and adventure, but also to the needs and enjoyment of their canine counterparts. Gone are the days when family vacations meant a sorrowful goodbye at the kennel's door. Now, a growing trend towards dog-friendly destinations is reshaping the travel industry. Hotels, airlines, and tourist destinations are increasingly recognizing and catering to this change in consumer behavior.

EuroPuppy.com carried out a survey of 3,000 dog-owning families to rate their preferred summer vacation destinations when traveling with their beloved pets. They then put together a ranking of the 100 Most Dog Friendly Vacation Destinations in America. The list has plenty of Southern destinations, including Blue Ridge and Jekyll Island.

Blue Ridge, Georgia came in 61st position overall. Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this charming town provides a scenic backdrop for families and their furry companions to explore. Blue Ridge boasts an abundance of dog-friendly hiking trails, such as the Aska Trails and the Benton MacKaye Trail, where families can embark on exhilarating walks amidst breathtaking landscapes. The town's picturesque downtown area is lined with pet-friendly shops and cafes, allowing families to enjoy a leisurely stroll and dine with their four-legged friends by their side. Blue Ridge offers pet-friendly accommodations, ensuring a comfortable stay for everyone. Families can also take advantage of pet-friendly activities, such as visiting the nearby pet-friendly orchards and wineries.

"Clients will often ask me if Blue Ridge is pet friendly," says Laura Elleby, Partner of E+E Group, an expert Realtor in the area with COMPASS of North Georgia. "The answer is an absolute yes! With 300 miles of hiking trails, the Toccoa River and Lake Blue Ridge, your dogs will enjoy the vast outdoors.

"Head downtown and get them a treat at a number of stores and do some shopping for yourself, too, as the majority of stores welcome pets inside. It’s no surprise Blue Ridge has been rated a pet-friendly town because that’s how we are in the mountains; we welcome all, and that includes people and pets!"

Jekyll Island, Georgia was voted by dog owners as the 68th favorite vacation destination. This barrier island boasts pristine beaches that welcome four-legged companions, providing ample space for joyful romps and

Backyard Chickens

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet, but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages.

There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low-maintenance. And bonus—unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

Things to Consider Before Getting Chickens:

First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.

Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple henhouse can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.

Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.

Hens will lay eggs through spring and summer and into the fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day.

Everything you need to get started on your backyard coop.
SEASONAL SETUPS | LIFE + CULTURE 50

HOW MANY CHICKENS SHOULD I KEEP?

Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.

HOW MUCH DOES KEEPING CHICKENS COST?

All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.

Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.

WHAT KIND OF SHELTER DO THEY NEED?

Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.

Want to go the fancy route?

Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own, or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com.

WHEN DO CHICKENS START LAYING EGGS?

Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.

PERFORMANCE 100

Nutrition = Fuel

Your nutritional habits will fuel your life. A diet with organic fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low sugar and little processed foods, should be the way you eat. Many athletes experiment with paleo, vegan or a balance between the two. Figure out what works for you and stick with it. As your training intensity changes, vary your nutritional regimen accordingly.

Endurance = Longevity

Life is a marathon one sprint at a time. Endurance exercise and interval training can improve your cardiovascular system. Vary the frequency, intensity and duration of your training. You’ll be amazed at how your body progresses.

PERFORMING AT YOUR HIGHEST LEVEL FOR A LIFETIME

Passionate athletes are always looking for the edge to stay fit while preventing injuries. It’s not always the best athlete or team that wins. It is often the healthiest. Regardless of your sport, there are principles you can follow to make it more productive and fun.

With experience providing care for professional athletes, college and high school teams, national champs and everyday folks, we’ve found five principles to incorporate into your training to accomplish these goals. If you only do three or four, you’re probably compromising your capabilities and experiencing frustrating injuries.

THE 5 PRINCIPLES OF 100 YEAR LIFESTYLE FITNESS

Neurology = Function

Neurology comes first! Your nervous system controls and coordinates the function of every cell and system in your body. A healthy nervous system is essential for your heart, lungs and every part of your body to work properly. This is why top athletes and performers utilize chiropractic care as a central part of their fitness program.

Strength = Independence

To optimize performance and also be independent as you age, you must make your strength a priority today. Whether you use weights or plyometric types of training, it is important to keep yourself strong as a part of a lifestyle.

Structure = Activity

Your structure determines the level of activity you can enjoy. Having a healthy spine is vital to your quality of life in the short and long term. Alignment of your extremities is also important. Chiropractic care corrects structural and neurological issues to heal, optimize performance and prevent injuries. Nearly every major sports team has a chiropractor.

Younger and Stronger Every Day

Our patients often say, “I am feeling younger and stronger every day.” Visit our office and incorporate these principles into your life now. Make them a habit as you age.

“Drs. Plasker keep me young and fast on the field at 60! Off the field, the care has been great for my overall well-being including plantar fasciitis, digestion, and much more. I wish I would have started when I was a kid.” Coach Sharon
