LIFESTYLE LETTER
“Finding Style in the Everyday, Close to Home” September in Minnesota always feels like a bit of a wardrobe change. The light softens, the air turns crisp, and something in us starts reaching for what's next. But style was never really about what's trending. It's about the moments when something, a color, a room, a ride, finally feels like you. Omni Viking Lakes Hotel proves a stylish escape doesn't require a plane ticket. Just minutes from home, the property blends resort-style pools, hot tubs, saunas, and dining built around Minnesota ingredients. General Manager Brent Glashan calls it an oasis from the city, only twenty minutes away. Holly Bernatz spent two decades helping businesses find their visual voice before realizing she hadn't found her own. At House of Colour, she helps clients understand which colors and shapes work for them, not because trends say so, but because it changes how they see themselves. Her studio proves that dressing with intention changes how we carry ourselves. Star Transportation has been getting Minnesotans where they're going in style since 1997, when Tim Fliehr turned a chance encounter with a limousine into a family business. Today his children help run the Eagan location, offering everything from airport rides to holiday light tours in a fleet built for comfort and reliability. Great Plains Windows and Doors understands that style lives in the details we often overlook. As Andersen's only Elite Dealer and Installation Company in the Twin Cities, the Oakdale-based company helps homeowners choose finishes, from bold black exteriors to warm wood interiors, that reflect how they actually live. As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle's sponsors. Their generous support enables us to get our magazine directly into our readers' homes. Please don't hesitate to contact us (eagan@citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend. Here's to a September that reminds us style was never about keeping up. It's about showing up as yourself, wherever that next season takes you.

You don’t always need to get on an airplane to have an amazing getaway. Often, the best locations are just around the corner. And, just minutes from home, Omni Viking Lakes Hotel has become one of Eagan's most stylish destinations for a weekend away. Set beside the Minnesota Vikings headquarters, the 320-room property offers polished accommodations, inviting gathering spaces, delectable dining, and a resort-style atmosphere that feels pleasantly removed from our daily routines and responsibilities. For General Manager Brent Glashan, that feeling has always been part of the vision. "Take the time to go outside," he says. "Watch the sunset by the fire pit. Take a walk around the pond. It's an oasis from the city but only 20 minutes away." That balance between proximity and relaxation is exactly what makes the hotel such an appealing staycation destination. Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, planning a girls' weekend, or simply craving a change of scenery, the experience begins the moment you step inside.
RESORT LIVING WITHOUT LEAVING MINNESOTA
Recently, the Omni has invested in new and improved outdoor amenities. Now, your summer retreat in Eagan will feel more like a destination vacation than you ever thought possible. Guests can spend the afternoon beside the heated outdoor pool, soak in one of two year-round hot tubs, or unwind inside one of the property's saunas. Private cabanas offer another way to spend the day, while the adjacent OASE Pool Bar serves seasonal dishes and refreshing beverages just steps from the water. Even after summer fades, the outdoor spaces continue to invite guests back. The hot tubs and saunas remain open throughout the winter, thanks to heated walkways and carefully designed outdoor areas. During colder months, the indoor pool provides another inviting place to relax. CONTINUED >

The surrounding grounds become just as active when temperatures drop. Viking Lakes regularly transforms the pond into skating rinks and curling sheets while seasonal events bring the campus to life with winter celebrations, ice mazes, and other outdoor activities.
Guests can also choose to dine at Keras Bar or Ember & Ice. And for special occasions, a private dining experience is always a great choice. Wherever you decide to dine, dinner can become just as memorable as the overnight stay itself.
DINING THAT DESERVES ITS OWN RESERVATION
While the guest rooms deliver understated elegance, those looking to indulge a little further have several impressive suite options. The hotel features four luxury suites and ten spacious corner executive suites, complete with soaking tubs, oversized wet rooms, and beautiful Cambria quartz surfaces throughout. Some suites comfortably accommodate four guests, making them ideal for couples traveling with friends or families seeking extra space. The Idlewild Spa adds another layer to the experience. Many visitors know about the spa treatments, but Brent says fewer realize the full range of amenities available with a booked service. Guests can choose from relaxing massages, rejuvenating facials, hydrating body wraps, vitamin C body scrubs, nail salon services, and other personalized treatments designed to help them unwind. Before or after an appointment, spa guests have exclusive access to private relaxation spaces, including hydrotherapy, saunas, steam rooms, a salt room, and quiet lounges
Many hotels treat dining as an afterthought. Omni Viking Lakes takes a different approach. "We're very food forward," Brent explains. "We want people to want to stay here, not just to sleep, but to enjoy the dining." You can see this philosophy in any of the property’s amazing dining establishments. And one of the first things you’ll notice is that rather than offering a menu that looks the same from city to city, the culinary team embraces Minnesota ingredients and local influences. Kyndred Hearth remains the hotel's signature restaurant through its partnership with James Beard Award-winning chef Ann Kim. Meanwhile, Executive Chef Matt Weaver continues introducing seasonal additions that keep returning guests pleasantly surprised. Brent points to a new tuna sushi-inspired dish, the yellowtail crudo, as one example that guests have quickly embraced.

that invite lingering a little longer. Before heading home, visitors can stop by the spa boutique to browse a thoughtfully curated collection of professional home care products, making it easy to continue the experience long after the staycation ends.
BUILT AROUND HOSPITALITY
Brent has been part of Omni Viking Lakes since before the hotel welcomed its first guests in 2020. During that time, he has watched the team grow from just four employees to more than 200. His favorite part of working for Omni isn't the building or the amenities. It's the people. "I absolutely love the culture of the brand," he says. "We're not just filling jobs. We're building careers." That philosophy is reflected throughout the property, from the warm welcome at check-in to the attentive service in the restaurants, spa, and guest spaces.
There is another unexpected bonus for football fans, too. During the NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings stay at the hotel before home games. A fall staycation could include spotting a favorite player in the lobby before kickoff or visiting the adjacent Vikings Museum to learn more about the team's history. Whether you're planning a romantic weekend, celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking for a stylish escape close to home, Omni Viking Lakes Hotel offers an experience that feels refreshingly different without asking you to travel far. To see seasonal packages, dining experiences, spa offerings, and upcoming events, visit the Omni Viking Lakes Hotel website at https://www.omnihotels.com/hotels/viking-lakes-minnesota.

WINDOWS WITH ST Y LE
From design guidance to expert installation, Great Plains Windows and Doors helps Twin Cities homeowners love where they live. ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER
22
H OM E U P DAT E | HO ME SE RVICE S
When people think about updating their homes, kitchens and bathrooms often get most of the attention. Yet few improvements have as much impact on a home's appearance, comfort, and curb appeal as new windows and doors. They frame every view, welcome every guest, and shape the personality of a home inside and out.
“We put ourselves in our customers’ shoes right from the very beginning.” For more than three decades, Great Plains Windows and Doors has helped Twin Cities homeowners make those decisions with care. Based in Oakdale, the company specializes exclusively in replacement windows and doors for existing homes, offering everything from the initial consultation through installation and service. That singular focus has helped earn its reputation as Andersen's only Elite Dealer and Installation Company in the Twin Cities. Tony Flint knows the business inside and out. He joined Great Plains Windows and Doors more than 10 years ago as the division's very first employee and has helped build the operation from the ground up. "It's a bit of a cliché, but it starts with the customer," Flint says. "We put ourselves in their shoes right from the very beginning."
MORE THAN A SALES CALL
Replacing windows and doors is rarely an impulse purchase. For many homeowners, it is their first
major renovation project. Flint says his team never loses sight of that reality. Rather than rushing through estimates, Great Plains takes the time to explain the process, discuss installation methods, answer questions, and even help homeowners compare proposals from other companies. "We want homeowners to be in a position where they have the information they need," Flint explains. "That helps them make the comparisons they need to make an informed decision." That educational approach has become part of the company's culture. Every conversation is built around understanding how a family lives in its home, what concerns they have, and what they hope to accomplish through the project. After all, replacing windows and doors is about much more than measurements. It's about working inside someone's home and treating that space with respect. BRINGING STYLE HOME
Windows and doors do far more than let in light and fresh air. They shape a home's character, influence curb appeal, and help define the style homeowners experience every day. Outside, darker window colors continue to appeal to homeowners seeking a more contemporary look. Black and dark bronze have become increasingly popular, and today's finishes perform far better than earlier generations. "We've sold more dark bronze and black windows and doors in the last few years than ever," Flint says. "The technology has improved. The fading concerns people had years ago just aren't the same today." Inside the home, design choices are changing too. Some homeowners prefer an all-white look with white walls, white trim, and white windows that brighten living spaces. Others want the warmth of maple or oak interiors, especially in older homes where natural wood complements the original character. The details matter, too. Hardware finishes can coordinate with kitchen cabinets or interior doors. Black exterior windows can be paired with black interiors for a bold statement, or balanced with white trim for a clean, contemporary contrast. "We spend a lot of time talking to our customers about the look they're trying to achieve," says Flint. "We almost become designers." Entry doors open even more possibilities. Decorative glass, sidelights, transom windows, hardware, colors, and panel designs allow homeowners to create an entrance that reflects their personal style before guests ever step inside.
KNOWING WHEN IT'S TIME
So, when is it time to replace your windows and doors? Sometimes the signs are obvious. Windows become difficult to crank open. Doublehung windows no longer slide easily. Hardware begins wearing out. Condensation forms between panes, or moisture starts contributing to rot around the frame. Older single-pane windows often allow outdoor temperatures to transfer directly into the home, making rooms less comfortable throughout Minnesota's changing seasons.
24
H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E SE RVICE S
“We replace windows all year round, even during the winter. The installation materials we use are made for Minnesota’s temperatures.” Other homeowners simply want a different look. Many are moving into homes that are new to them and want windows and doors that better match their style while updating how they function. Whatever the motivation, Flint says homeowners don't need to wait for a particular season. "We replace windows all year round, even during the winter," he says. "The installation materials we use are made for Minnesota's temperatures." On especially cold days below zero, projects may be adjusted slightly to prioritize the safety of homeowners and installation crews, but replacements occur year-round.
BUILT AROUND ONE BRAND
While some companies offer products from many manufacturers, Great Plains Windows and Doors has focused exclusively on Andersen products since the beginning. That specialization allows the team to develop deep product
knowledge while maintaining a close working relationship with Andersen. The company installs nearly every Andersen product line and understands how different materials perform in Minnesota's climate, whether homeowners are considering composite, woodcore, aluminum, or other construction options. Flint believes that focus ultimately benefits homeowners. "We're not the biggest," he says. "But we really believe in the process. We believe in helping homeowners. We want them to get what they're looking for, and that what they get makes sense to them." That philosophy has guided the company since 1991. It's one conversation, one home, and one installation at a time. For more than 20 years, Holly Bernatz made a career helping businesses communicate through design. As the owner of Beyond Design, she understood color theory, branding, and visual communication inside and out. Ironically, she struggled with one audience. Herself. Working remotely long before it became common, Holly rarely gave much thought to her wardrobe. A T-shirt and sweatpants worked just fine when clients only heard her voice over the phone or exchanged emails. Her work spoke for itself. Then COVID changed everything. Suddenly, meetings moved to Zoom. Clients wanted face-to-face conversations through a computer screen. Networking shifted from phone calls to coffee meetings as people craved connection again. "I realized I knew I brought value," Holly says. "I just wasn't sure how to present myself in a way that reflected it." She wanted to look like the professional she knew she was, but every morning started with uncertainty. A friend suggested she schedule an appointment with House of Colour. That one appointment changed the direction of her career.
MORE THAN GETTING DRESSED
Many people assume House of Colour is simply about makeup or fashion. Holly says that's only the surface. "What we really do is help grow the confidence of our clients," she says. "We're rebuilding the relationship between the person and the body they live in, and how they show up in the world." Clients usually begin with one of two services: color analysis or style analysis. During a color consultation, Holly spends about two hours evaluating how different colors interact with a person's natural features. She looks at three characteristics: undertones, softness versus clarity, and lightness versus depth. Those qualities are then organized into a seasonal palette that naturally complements the individual. Rather than chasing whatever color happens to be trending, clients begin to understand why certain shades make them look rested, healthy, and approachable while others seem to compete with their natural features. “I REALIZED I KNEW I BROUGHT VALUE. I JUST WASN’T SURE HOW TO PRESENT MYSELF IN A WAY THAT REFLECTED IT.”
The results reach far beyond clothing. Hair color, makeup, jewelry, and accessories can all become easier choices when everything works together. Style analysis answers a different question. Instead of focusing on color, Holly studies body architecture alongside personality and lifestyle. The goal is to identify clothing shapes, proportions, and details that feel authentic to the individual wearing them. "When people get dressed, especially women, they're flooded with choices," Holly says. "Decision fatigue is real." She describes it simply. "Color is the ingredient. Style is the recipe."
30
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y
Holly admits she initially found the color analysis interesting, but the style consultation truly surprised her. "For 20 years, I had been hiding," she says. "I was trying to make other people comfortable while forgetting who I was. I was making myself smaller, so I would fit in." She began researching and discovered that House of Colour is the world's largest personal styling franchise, backed by a comprehensive training program in both color and style analysis. While she already understood the science of color from decades in graphic design, she was fascinated by how those same principles could help people instead of products. "I thought, if I had this problem, other people probably do, too." Holly purchased a House of Colour franchise in the fall of 2022 and opened her Farmington studio in the summer of 2023. She works with women, men, and children, but many of her clients are people experiencing change. Some are entering the workforce. Others are preparing for retirement, changing careers, rebuilding after a major life event, or simply trying to reconnect with themselves after years of putting everyone else first. While they often arrive expecting wardrobe advice, they frequently leave talking about something much bigger. For Holly, that's the real purpose behind the work. "It's about helping people stop second-guessing themselves," she says. "When you understand what naturally works for you, you stop trying to be someone else. You simply become more of yourself."

STYLISH LUXURY
&
RELIABILITY
Whether it is a ride to the airport, an anniversary dinner, a holiday light tour, or a weekend wine tasting trip with friends, there is something special about arriving in style. That philosophy has guided Star Transportation since 1997, when Tim Fliehr decided to turn an idea into a family business. After driving past a limousine one day while picking up his father at the airport, he became intrigued by the industry. Although his father passed away shortly afterward, the dream of building something of his own remained.

Tim and his mother purchased their first 1988 stretch limousine, and after meeting his wife, Tina, the business continued to expand one vehicle at a time. Nearly three decades later, that small beginning has grown into one of Minnesota's best-known transportation companies, serving the Twin Cities and Rochester with a fleet designed for everything from executive travel to celebrations.
A FAMILY BUSINESS OFFERING 5-STAR SERVICE
Today, the next generation is helping guide the business forward. "I am the oldest of Tim and Tina's three children," says Paige Krueger, office manager for the Eagan location. "Katie handles our marketing, Owen is our go-to mechanic and takes care of vehicle maintenance, and I'm involved in everything from fleet maintenance and hiring chauffeurs to managing the office staff. I'm part of all the day-to-day details."
EVOLUTION TO STAY AHEAD OF THE TIMES
For Paige, watching the company evolve has been exciting. "A lot has changed," she says. "Private car service used to be viewed as something very sophisticated with white gloves. It was mostly executives traveling to the airport or people going out on weekends. Now we're operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week." While airport transportation remains a large part of the business, today's clients are looking for experiences just as much as destinations. Groups book day trips and overnight excursions. Couples reserve rides for dinner shows at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Friends spend winter afternoons visiting local wineries. During the holidays, festive light tours have become one of Star Transportation's most popular traditions. "We're always looking for the best holiday displays throughout the Twin Cities," Paige says. "It's something families and groups really look forward to every year."
A STYLISH FLEET
Even as transportation needs have changed, one thing has stayed the same. "We still lean toward the more luxurious side of things," she says. CONTINUED >

35
That commitment is reflected throughout the fleet, particularly in one vehicle that Paige admits has become her favorite. "Our BMW i7 is probably the most unique vehicle we have," she says. "It's fully electric. The rear seats recline and have massage functions. A television folds down from the ceiling, and passengers can control almost everything from the back seat. They don't even have to ask the driver." That combination of technology and comfort is just one example of how luxury travel has changed. Today, passengers want modern features just as much as classic service.
COMPETITIVE PRICING AND STELLAR TRANSPORTATION
Of course, people sometimes hesitate when comparing transportation options. "There is always the price question," Paige says. "But we ask people if they really want to worry about parking at the airport, riding a shuttle from a remote lot, or wondering if they'll arrive on time. We take care of all of that." Behind every reservation is a team working around the clock. "Our maintenance department deserves a lot of credit," she says. "If someone notices something, even something very small, it gets taken care of right away. We have reliable vehicles, wonderful chauffeurs, and a dispatch team that's always monitoring everything." That attention to detail has helped build longterm relationships with clients who return for business travel, family celebrations, concerts, sporting events, weddings, and vacations.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Looking ahead, the Fliehr family plans to continue investing in newer vehicles and fresh ideas while holding onto the values that started the company nearly 30 years ago. "We always want to have the latest and greatest," Paige says. "People want something modern, stylish, and fun. Today, we're the most stylish we've ever been." For a company built around moving people from one place to another, Star Transportation has become about much more than transportation. It is about creating an experience where every mile feels like part of the celebration. And according to Paige, those fundamental beliefs are not going anywhere. "We have a passion for moving people and providing the best service we possibly can," she says. "And it always will be in style."

DIRECTIONS:
• • • • • •
Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
