This makes it a wonderful time to get out and explore the community we live in. Whether it is exploring some of the wonderful parks in the area, checking out a new restaurant, or just going off the beaten path, make sure that you take time to get out and explore! I hope that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about. To make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. Sometimes exploring can be as simple as trying something that is outside of our comfort zone. Other times, it can be taking an exotic trip. In either case, exploring is a way for us to get out of the monotony of our daily lives. Exploration is an amazing form of self care. It does wonders for our mental health, helps us build confidence, and enhances our creativity. As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle's sponsors. With all of the excitement and planning, it’s easy to overthink and still forget important things. Here are a few tips for less stress to help you feel like a pro on your next trip.

Have you ever considered what you would do if your ID and passport were to ever be stolen while traveling? It is always a wise idea to make copies of these important documents (including your insurance information) and store them in each of your bags. That way, if something happens and you get separated from your belongings, you have records to rely on to help you work with the proper authorities and get you home.

We often get so wrapped up in the perfect outfits to pack - whether for business or pleasure - that we forget to think about the fact that often our destinations have a completely different style than what we are used to. Avoid being perceived as a tourist by doing a quick search of what the local style is and tailoring your packing list to fit. Pro tip: pack interchangeable pieces for low-stress outfits!

It is unfortunately a common occurrence that luggage gets lost or sometimes severely delayed. This can be a big problem, especially when you are traveling for important events. You should always pack an outfit you can sleep in and an extra change of clothes you can wear at your destination to get you through in case of an emergency. Don’t leave yourself scrambling for clean clothes on your way out of the airport!

“My husband was traveling for work,” Jane says. “I was having trouble sleeping because my kids were in bed with me. The windows were open since it was a nice spring night. I thought I heard someone jostling the sliding glass door under our bedroom window. The next thing I heard was the house alarm going off. I called 911 before the alarm company could even call me.” Fortunately, the alarm was enough to scare the intruder away. The police arrived quickly and made sure no one was inside the home.

“It was the scariest three minutes of my life,” she says. “I don’t think I slept until my husband returned home from his work trip overseas a few days later.” After the incident, Jane wanted to learn how to improve her personal safety. She found out that Stock and Barrel Gun Club (an upscale and inviting club offering a shooting range, training facility, and pro shop) offers safety classes for women that focus on surviving a home invasion. The class helps students develop a plan to minimize the threat while maximizing their chances of survival. CONTINUED >

“The first time I went there, I sat in my car in the parking lot for 45 minutes, trying to convince myself to go in,” Jane says. Randy Ferris, General Manager of Stock and Barrel Gun Club, showed Jane some tools to use for protection, including a small flashlight. “I was surprised when he told me it could be used for self-defense,” she says. Jane wasn’t initially comfortable around firearms. She didn’t grow up with exposure to hunting or shooting. Then she met her husband, who liked to trap and target shoot. She tried firing a single round one time with him but didn’t like it. “From the moment I walked into Stock and Barrel, the employees made me feel comfortable and relaxed,” she says. “The fear I had turned into respect. I didn’t feel intimidated at all.” Stock and Barrel looks more like an alpine version of a country club than your dad’s sparse shooting range of the past. Originally started as a place to “shoot and smoke cigars” (according to their website), it’s become a place where people can feel at ease learning about and enjoying firearms. Adorned with comfortable leather chairs, largescreen TVs, and featuring a laid-back lodge style, Stock and Barrel looks like it belongs somewhere in the mountains. Jane took a handgun safety class, which gave her the confidence to try target shooting with her husband. Now the two have competitions to see who’s the better shot. She’s taken several classes at Stock and Barrel, including those focused on self-defense, gun safety, and conceal and carry and she encourages others to get educated about their personal safety.

She also encourages parents to teach their children how to respect guns, whether parents own them or not. Her son took the Minnesota Youth Hunter Safety Course, and her daughter, coming up on 11 years old, is almost old enough to take it. “A child should know what to do if they ever find a gun,” she says. “They should know not to touch it and to find an adult.” Ferris says the most popular classes at Stock and Barrel are Introduction to Handgun Safety and Permit to Carry. They offer several classes that aren’t solely focused on firearms, like Less Lethal Defense Training, Surviving an Active Shooter, Travel Safety and Security, and Surviving a Home Invasion. They also periodically offer free seminars on topics such as firearms history, strategies for protecting your children, and mental health. Ferris urges parents to talk to him or another staff member to determine appropriate training for children. Stock and Barrel offers memberships, but the public is also welcome. The staff enjoys working with new shooters while giving them a safe and comfortable environment. Like Jane, many people go to Stock and Barrel simply because they’re concerned about their personal safety. He says their training is the most comprehensive program available to civilians in the Twin Cities. Sometimes we are so eager to explore the broader world around us that we forget many amazing adventures that can be had close to home. Minnesota Highway 61 is Minnesota’s only AllAmerican Road. The North Shore Scenic Drive follows the shoreline of Lake Superior for 154 miles of spectacular scenery between Duluth and the Canadian border. This area is home to various natural and cultural attractions including eight state parks. From scenic hikes and waterfalls to charming towns and historical landmarks, the North Shore Scenic Drive has something for everyone. If you’re looking for outdoor adventures, the North Shore won’t disappoint. In addition to hiking and waterfall sightseeing, the area is home to several state parks with opportunities for camping, fishing, boating, and wildlife spotting. Just past the town of Two Harbors is Gooseberry Falls State Park. The park features a series of cascading waterfalls, hiking trails, and picnic areas. The falls themselves are a sight to behold, with water tumbling over a series of rocky ledges before flowing into Lake Superior. Be sure

to check out the stunning views of Lake Superior from the Picnic Flow, an excellent example of an ancient, hardened lava flow. One of the most popular destinations along the North Shore is Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The lighthouse, which sits atop a 130-foot cliff, is one of the most photographed landmarks in the state. Visitors can tour the lighthouse, which was built in 1910, and learn about its history and importance in guiding ships on Lake Superior. The park also offers several hiking trails with stunning views of the lake and surrounding wilderness as well as campsites along the lakeshore. Tettegouche State Park offers scenic vistas, multi-use, four season trails and a variety of rock climbing opportunities. If you’re up for a challenging hike, make sure you don’t miss the hike up to the top of Palisade Head, a sheer cliff overlooking the lake. At the top, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the shoreline and surrounding wilderness. Just off Highway 61 is the Oberg Mountain Loop. This 2.3 mile loop provides gorgeous views of

the shoreline as well as the Sawtooth Mountains. However, the highlight of the hike is the stunning view of Oberg Lake. The view is gorgeous year round, but the colors of the surrounding forest are truly spectacular in the fall. If you’re interested in history, be sure to visit Grand Portage National Monument. This site, run by the National Park Service, is dedicated to preserving the history of the fur trade in the Great Lakes region. Visitors can tour a reconstructed fur trading post, watch demonstrations of traditional crafts and skills, and learn about the Ojibwe people who lived in the area. While you are in the area, be sure to go see the High Falls at Grand Portage State Park. The water here plummets 120 feet, making them the highest falls in Minnesota. No trip to the North Shore would be complete without a visit to one of the area’s charming towns. Silver Bay is located in the middle of several parks. The taconite mill in Silver Bay draws in many large iron ore tankers making ship spotting a fun activity. Silver Bay is also home to Black Beach, a black sand beach that resulted from taconite residue from the nearby plant. Grand Marais is a picturesque village with a thriving arts scene. The town’s harbor is home to several fishing boats, and visitors can watch the daily catch being brought in. In the summer, the town hosts the Grand Marais Arts Festival, which draws artists and visitors from around the region. The Minnesota North Shore is a unique and beautiful region with a variety of attractions for visitors to enjoy. It is a spectacular way to explore nature, history and culture without venturing too far from home!
