I don’t know about you, but this time of year, I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting-card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or to enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just to say a kind word? I usually land somewhere in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you as we celebrate what’s to love in your local community. A SWEET STORY DISCOVERING WHAT MAKES SWEET TREASURES SWEET WITH ANN ALABOUD. ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA

Need a date idea this Valentine’s Day? Sweet Treasures in Apple Valley opened in 2015 with a mission to create cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts that not only tasted good but also looked good. Ann Alaboud from Sweet Treasurers discusses that journey.

CAKES, CUPCAKES, AND MORE— OH MY! “Sweet Treasures brings you the best in American baking with a European gourmet twist,” says Ann. “We feature fresh-baked cakes, cupcakes, cookies, breakfast muffins, brownies, and cake pops. All our cupcakes are baked fresh daily, and any unsold cupcakes or baked goods are donated to our local shelters.” Since their opening, Sweet Treasurers boasts many awards, including a feature on the Food Network show The Big Bake in 2022, winning the show Cake Wars on the Food Network in 2016, and ranking in the Top 20 Bakeshops in Minneapolis from 2017-2021. “It is because of our loyal customers that we pushed to go on the Food Network and won Cake Wars in 2016,”

says Ann. “We have taken Best of Wedding Vendors from 2016 to 2022. Sweet Treasures has also been featured in Cake Central magazine a few times and has been voted Best Wedding Cake Designs in Minneapolis.” With so many accolades, it’s easy to see the rewards from the effort Ann and the rest of the team put in. “Every cake, cupcake, and baked good we make uses the finest available ingredients,” says Ann. “They’re baked fresh to order in small batches by our team. Each one is then hand-decorated by that same small gang of cake-obsessed individuals. No shortcuts, no strange additives or preservatives, just incredibly delicious, creative treats.” Sweet Treasures offers “around 278 flavors,” says Ann. “That makes it hard for customers to choose sometimes. If I had to pick, I’d say our raspberry burst, salted caramel, and hot fudge cupcakes are the most popular.” Ann’s personal order, however, is a muffin with coffee. “You can’t beat a great muffin paired with a delicious, handcrafted coffee,” she says. In addition to sweets, the shop offers coffee, tea, and ice blenders.

ALL ABOUT ANN “I love creating art,” Ann says. “I have an undergraduate degree in art and a culinary degree, so I get to do two of my very favorite things every day. The cakes we create tell a story.” Ann and Sweet Treasures are very much involved in the south metro community. “I love Eagan because I grew up here; I am from here. have so many fond memories of the parks around the area and running to Amoco gas station for snacks as a kid.” Ann is thrilled to be getting back to work after her journey with cancer. “Although Sweet Treasures is currently open, we have times when we need to shut down due to my surgeries. Since I am the heart of the operations, it’s been a challenge finding the right people to carry on while I recover.” Still, she knows the customers at Sweet Treasurers understand, and she loves her job. “The most rewarding feeling is seeing customers’ faces when they see their custom cakes,” says Ann. In order to bring a customer’s vision to life, she listens to the customer’s goals and then puts her own twist on them. “It also helps to have inspirational items such as an invitation or color palette.” Ultimately, Ann doesn’t let her health challenges keep her down. “I am almost there,” says Ann. “Before you know it, we will be back in full swing! RELAXATION If you’re looking for a date idea this Valentine’s Day, consider spending a day at IdleWild Spa, located in the Omni Viking Lakes hotel. IdleWild Spa isn’t an ordinary spa. To start, it’s a Nordic spa, which means that treatments “focus on relaxation through the thermal experience,” says Ann Zimmer, spa director. “It’s about warming your body up and then cooling it down and then relaxing and then cycling through that a couple different times. It’s great for your body and great for getting the most out of your services.” The benefits of a hot and cold treatment cycle are significant. “It’s good for your metabolism and your lymphatic system,” says Ann. “The shock of getting your system going and then cooling it down helps your body recover.” The lymphatic system is what keeps the fluid levels in your body in balance and helps defend your body against infections, among other things. According to Ann, the services are for “anybody who’s looking for a day of relaxation,” and spa guests don’t have to book a hotel room to get a service done. Although Ann’s personal favorite treatment is a facial, “Massages are definitely the most popular service here,” she says. “In the past, massages were a luxury, not a necessity. But now, with everybody sitting at their desk all day, it’s hard on your body, and massage is a good way to help your body recover. Facials are great, too—your skin is your largest organ, so you should be taking care of that as well.” Taking the time to care for yourself with a spa day promotes relaxation in your body. “Taking care of yourself and your body is good for your health,” says Ann. “It lowers your stress level. It’s a great way to mentally and physically get away from the day. We need to take care of ourselves.” Ann sees those benefits reflected in customers every day. “Everybody’s happy when they come in here,” says Ann. “As soon as you walk in, you relax. We try to help out with that, too, by anticipating what people are going to need before they realize they need it.” To curate a relaxed spa environment, Ann and the staff at IdleWild start by greeting each customer and setting the tone for a positive experience. Sometimes, it’s the simple things that mean the most. This year on Valentine’s Day, instead of stressing over making last-minute reservations, try making a romantic dinner for two at home. Bacon-wrapped sea scallops are simple to make but have the look of being a restaurant-quality dish. They can be served with pasta or mashed potatoes to make a stunning meal. Searing the scallops will enhance their sweetness and make them a perfect match with a chardonnay. Crème brûlée is a decadent French dessert. While it may be romantic to share one dish with two spoons, it’s so good, be sure to make enough so you each get your own dessert!

Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops

ingredients: • • • • •

10 large sea scallops 10 strips of bacon 3 teaspoons of unsalted butter 2 to 3 teaspoons of avocado oil Salt and pepper to taste

directions: 1. Cook the bacon so it is cooked but soft enough to be wrapped around the scallops. 2. Put the cooked bacon on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess grease. 3. Remove the large tendon from the scallops and pat dry.

4. Wrap each scallop with a piece of bacon and secure the bacon with a toothpick. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Put the oil and butter in a skillet over medium-high heat until the oil is hot and the butter is melted.

6. Carefully add the scallops to the oil for 1 1/2 minutes per side until golden brown.

Crème Brûlée makes:

2 servings

prep time: 15 mins

cook time: 55 minutes

additional time: 2 hours

total time: 3 hours, 10 minutes

ingredients: • • • • • •

1 cup heavy cream 3 tablespoons white sugar 3 large egg yolks ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons white sugar, divided Fresh berries (optional)

directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Whisk together cream and 3 tablespoons sugar in a microwave-safe bowl until combined. Cook in the microwave until warm, 1 to 2 minutes; whisk again to dissolve sugar. Whisk in egg yolks and vanilla until smooth. 3. Pour cream mixture into 2 ramekins set in a roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into the pan to reach halfway up the sides of the ramekins. 4. Bake in the preheated oven until custard is set but slightly jiggly in the center when shaken, about 50 minutes. Remove ramekins from hot water and chill in the refrigerator until cold, at least 2 hours. 5. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon sugar evenly over the top of each dessert. Use a kitchen torch to melt and lightly toast sugar topping until brown and bubbly, about 30 seconds. Let sugar topping cool to harden before serving. Top with fresh berries if desired.

Love is on the brain this February, but what makes a marriage last? How do couples grow in love instead of falling out of it? Don’t take my advice—take it from the couples below.

THE START OF ROMANCE Lee & Mary Lou Lee and Mary Lou Lindberg have been married for 71 years. They met when Mary Lou was 18 and had just moved out of her parent’s house to begin her training as a nurse. That’s when Lee and Mary Lou’s love story gets a little unconventional. “At the time, I was dating another boy, Jack,” says Mary Lou. “Lee had a date with my roommate, Jeanette.” After their dates with Jack and Jeanette, Lee and Mary Lou knew they were meant to be with each other. “Next time, Lee said he wanted to date me instead of her. He decided he liked me better,” says Mary Lou. “My date must’ve been alright with it because he went along with it.” “Jeanette wasn’t my type,” Lee says. “Mary Lou and I knew a good thing when we saw it.” Their first date was at a restaurant in Nebraska. “It was a place, nothing fancy,” says Mary Lou. “It was the local place to go.” Over dinner, the pair realized how well they worked together and how much they enjoyed each other’s company. “Lee can keep a conversation going,” says Mary Lou. “He likes to tell jokes. He’s the funny guy.” “I liked her and I grew to love her,” says Lee. “She’s a lovely lady and a kind person. Very kind—she took me in, after all.”

Don & Sally Don DeBoer and Sally Neiley have been together for over 23 years. Don and Sally were first introduced by a friend of Sally’s. For their first date, Don and Sally watched a Vikings game and enjoyed pizza together. Sally’s spunk attracted Don right away, and their date gave them the opportunity to get to know one another. With good conversation and good food, Don and Sally were drawn to each other and decided to continue spending time together. After the date, Don told his daughter, “I’m going to marry that woman.” And he did. “Don is a good father, good husband, and a good man,” says Sally. “Sally is how I know God loves me,” says Don.

GROWING UP AND GROWING OLD TOGETHER Lee & Mary Lou Once Lee and Mary Lou knew they were right for each other, they decided to get married. “I don’t know that I ever really proposed,” says Lee. “Didn’t I say, ‘Let’s get hitched?’ And then we did.” Over the course of their marriage, Lee and Mary Lou raised a family together. “Lee was an excellent father,” says Mary Lou. “He would take the time to show them how to do things. He was a good dad. He still is.” “Mary Lou is kind and understanding,” says Lee. “We’ve had a wonderful life together.” Lee and Mary Lou enjoy traveling together. “We took a couple of cruises and we liked camping,” says Mary Lou. “We took the kids to the Black Hills and we’d camp out sometimes in the camper. We had a pull camper.” However, Lee’s favorite trip wasn’t a cruise or a campground. “My favorite was the trip to the altar,” he says. Arguments come up in any relationship, and working through them together keeps love alive. “Mary Lou’s very kind in that regard,” says Lee. “She lets me think I win.”

Don & Sally Don and Sally knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with each other. They got married in the backyard of the house they would live in together for 20 years. Don and Sally love spending time together. In addition to watching the Vikings, “We like golfing,” says Sally. “I’m better, of course.” Sally golfed before meeting Don and introduced him to the game. Don is an advanced golfer himself. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what activity they do, as long as it involves spending time with each other. “Don makes anything fun,” says Sally. “We do everything together,” says Don. “We have a great time together.” To resolve disagreements, Don and Sally believe in forgiving and forgetting. “We’ve never had an argument, or if we have, I can’t remember it,” says Don.

THEIR LOVE, TODAY Lee & Mary Lou “Mary Lou is a good woman,” says Lee. “I fell in love with her and I still am in love with her. Pretty obvious, isn’t it? I love her with all my heart.” “We’ve been fortunate in many ways,” says Mary Lou. “He’s a good man.” That’s Mary Lou’s advice to the next generation of lovebirds, too. “Marry a good woman. Marry a good man.” “Someone who has a good heart and is generous,” says Lee. “That’s who you want to spend your life with.” Don & Sally Don and Sally treasure every moment together. “We’re meant to be,” Sally says. “We just love each other,” Don says. Don and Sally have a few words of advice for the younger crowd, too. “Find someone you like, someone you can spend time with,” says Sally. “You’ll spend a lot of time together.”
