The holidays are here, and as the season's spirit is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all. One of my favorite parts of the holidays is spending time with my family and driving around different neighborhoods while looking at Christmas lights. There is something magical to me about the way the lights look especially on a tree covered with fresh snow! The holidays are a season of giving. This month we wanted to highlight people who give back to their community. Katie Plunkett works with cancer survivors to help them regain their strength and vitality through physical fitness. Mike Peterson, owner of Christian Brothers Automotive in Inver Grove Heights, provides oil changes and basic car maintenance to single mothers and the elderly struggling to make ends meet during the shop's National Day of Service event. Sometimes we are good at neglecting ourselves as we are busy caring for those around us. One way to give back to ourselves is to take some time and take a trip to relax and restore our minds and bodies. A trip to a warmer climate can be especially important as a way to break up our long winters. We talked to Dean Victorson from American Cruises and Tours about the benefits of working with an agent to plan such a trip. Lastly, we provide some easy holiday food hacks to give us more time to spend with our families and friends this holiday season rather than being stuck in the kitchen. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy, and love. Mike Peterson, owner of the Christian Brothers Automotive franchise in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, had spent over 26 years in the technology industry. While it provided a comfortable living, he began yearning for a more fulfilling path in life. Coincidentally, around the same time he contemplated this change, his mother shared a glowing experience at Christian Brothers Automotive in Lakeville. This sparked an idea that would change his life.

EMBRACING A MISSION: LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF Upon researching Christian Brothers Automotive, Peterson was not only impressed by their business model but deeply moved by their simple yet profound mission: "Love Your Neighbor As Yourself." With the company set to open a new location in Inver Grove Heights and no franchise owner in sight, he and his wife Sue, a paraprofessional for District 196, embarked

on an eight-step journey that would make them the proud owners of this Christian Brothers location, one of 280 establishments across the U.S.

AN ACTIVE MODEL OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The company operates on an active model, where franchise owners actively participate in the daily operations. Many, like Peterson, come from diverse backgrounds outside the automotive industry, bringing fresh perspectives that contribute to exceptional customer service. “I appreciate the business model that we employ. A DIVINE CALLING: THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AUTOMOTIVE

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: A GROWING IMPACT

The Christian Brothers Automotive story traces back to 1982 when owner Mark Carr, feeling restless despite his professional success, prayed for a new direction in life. The next day, a fellow church member approached him with the idea to start an automotive repair shop. They decided to name it Christian Brothers Automotive, reflecting their shared faith. This marked the beginning of Christian Brothers Automotive Corporation.

In 2022, they assisted ten customers during the National Day of Service, donating approximately $15,000 in repair work. Moreover, in September of that year, the location stepped in to help a family with a handicapped child facing a costly transmission issue. With collaboration from AAA Auto Parts and their corporate office, they provided a refurbished transmission, ensuring the family's safety and well-being. At their event on October 7, 2023, they assisted ten families, helping to ensure their vehicles were safe on the road. They also serviced two families in advance of the event, making things a bit easier for a total of 12 families in all. Most cars received new brakes, tires, wiper blades, bulbs, and battery service, for a total of $10,000 in repairs, all in one day.

A COMPANY ROOTED IN GIVING BACK Christian Brothers Automotive's commitment to its mission extends beyond its professional services. They are deeply rooted in giving back to the community. Peterson emphasizes, "We take the mission to love our neighbors as ourselves seriously. We win as a team, and we lose as a team. And giving back, well, that’s just who we are." In fact, the Christian Brothers Automotive Corporation (CBAC) Foundation has given millions to charitable organizations. They aim to give $25M between 2020 and 2025; to date, the CBAC Foundation has donated more than $15M.

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE: A HEARTFELT INITIATIVE An excellent example of their community involvement is the National Day of Service hosted by the Inver Grove Heights location. Typically held later in October, the Inver Grove Heights shop chooses to organize its event earlier in the month due to weather considerations that creep up as winter approaches. This event offers oil changes and basic car maintenance to single mothers and the elderly struggling to make ends meet, enabling them to fulfill their commitments. "We partner with Amazing Grace Lutheran Church to identify those who can benefit most from our services," Peterson explains.

Survival2Strength Empowering Cancer Survivors Through Strength and Resilience ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER

Cancer is a formidable adversary, affecting millions of lives worldwide. In the U.S. alone, the National Institutes of Health projected 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer-related deaths in 2023. For those who have faced the battle against cancer, the journey towards recovery is far from over. This is where Survival2Strength, based in the Twin Cities, steps in—a remarkable non-profit organization dedicated to helping cancer survivors regain their strength and vitality through physical fitness. I spoke with Katie Plunkett, a passionate personal trainer and founder of Optimize You Personal Training & Fitness, who donates her time and expertise to this life-changing cause.

THE BIRTH OF SURVIVAL2STRENGTH Survival2Strength was founded by Clare Polose, an RN and certified personal trainer committed to supporting cancer survivors. Clare's background in nursing and her experience working with cancer patients inspired her to create a

non-profit with a mission to help people who have had cancer become as healthy as possible through strength training and other physical activities. Clare recognized that physical activity, including aerobic exercise, mobility, balance training, and strength workouts, offers the same benefits to cancer survivors as to the general population. And Katie was inspired by her mission.

KATIE PLUNKETT: A PERSONAL TRAINER WITH A HEART OF GOLD Katie Plunkett, one of the driving forces supporting Survival2Strength, has a personal connection to the cause. She lost her own mother to ovarian cancer, a devastating experience that motivated her to dedicate a portion of her career to helping cancer survivors get back on their feet. Katie had a remarkable journey of her own. She is a speech-language pathologist working with children with autism for Minneapolis Public Schools. However, inspired by a personal trainer at a local gym, Katie followed her passion for

guiding others in their fitness journey. Shortly after completing the certification process to become a certified personal trainer, Katie found her niche working with adults who may otherwise be intimidated to step foot in a gym. Her step-by-step, individualized approach allows clients to take steps forward at the pace that works for them.

MEETING SURVIVORS WHERE THEY ARE When asked about the unique approach to training cancer survivors, Katie emphasized the importance of meeting them where they are on their recovery journey. “Every survivor's situation is different, depending on factors such as the type of cancer they had, the stage of their treatment, and their previous fitness level,” she shared. “Many survivors face challenges like neuropathy or lymphedema, which necessitate a tailored approach. Survival2Strength designs customized, step-by-step plans to help survivors improve their health and regain their strength.” CONTINUED >

“I DIDN’T REALIZE HOW MUCH I NEEDED TO GAIN STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE. I FEEL LIKE NOW I AM LIVING WITH A HEALTHIER MIND, BODY, AND SOUL.” THE IMPACT OF SURVIVAL2STRENGTH Survival2Strength's impact is best illustrated through the stories of cancer survivors whose lives have been transformed by the dedication and expertise of the trainers who help them. Katie shared how one survivor told her that she was recently able to squat down and pick up a baby — a seemingly simple task but one that was once impossible for her. Another cancer survivor, Marilyn Davern, living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, shared that she had been struggling with motivation to be active despite being a relatively active person her entire life. “I learned about Survival2Strength from my husband, who told me Clare had come to speak at one of his Rotary meetings,” Marilyn shared. “I contacted Clare and was introduced to Katie. I signed up for an eight-week program, meeting with Katie twice per week. I loved that Katie takes patients where they are and changes the routine to keep it from getting boring." “I didn’t realize how much I needed to gain strength and resilience. I feel like now I am living with a healthier mind, body, and soul.” Marilyn continues to work with Katie once weekly and encourages others to seek help. “It can make such a difference for those living with cancer.”

THE HEALING POWER OF EXERCISE According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, exercise is a crucial component of healthy living for cancer survivors. It can reduce anxiety and fatigue, improve self-esteem, enhance heart health, help maintain a healthy weight, boost muscle strength and endurance, and increase positive feelings. Survival2Strength is integral in making these benefits accessible to survivors, empowering them to rebuild their lives after cancer treatment.

KATIE'S INSPIRATION Katie shared her deep sense of privilege in working with cancer survivors. She highlighted survivors'

immense determination, having journeyed through cancer trials and having emerged stronger. Her motivation comes from the inspiring stories of survivors she works with, and she considers it an opportunity to enhance their quality of life. She stated, "I am helping them regain a wholeness they might not have felt since before their diagnosis."

If you don't have time to bake a dessert but want to serve something that doesn't look store-bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce, or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to Trader Joe's and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

Why not create a unique holiday charcuterie board in the shape of a Christmas tree or snowman? It looks impressive and was a quick assembly. For this look, a few trimmed evergreen clippings from the backyard served as a great edging for the board. With a variety of cheeses, berries, nuts and olives, this tasty display makes the perfect statement board. For an added touch, use a cookie cutter to add a cheese star to the top.

NEW YORK CHEESECAKE This inexpensive cheesecake was purchased at Trader Joe's but definitely needed a little something to make it look festive. Candied pecans (we made ours from scratch but they can be purchased), fresh berries, and mint sprigs can be used to add color, dimension, and interest. (Pictured on cover.)

APPLE TART This apple tart was already really pretty right out of the box; however, adding a few toppers made it look like it was made from scratch. Sliced pears, fresh herbs, berries, and drizzled caramel added color and a homemade touch to this delicious treat.

NAKED CAKE A cake mix, a simple buttercream frosting, and a gingerbread house kit are all it took to create this adorable 3-layered naked cake. After preparing the cake layers, simply ice the cake in a thin layer to give an opaque look that reveals some of the cake underneath. This cake was topped with a gingerbread house and coconut flakes to resemble snow.

DOUBLE CRÈME BRIE BOARD This double crème brie with truffles can be purchased at Trader Joe's and is always a crowd favorite. After baking the brie, add berries and a sauce of your choosing to the top as a flavor enhancer as well as to add interest. This brie is drizzled with local honey, berries, and candied pecans and is served with crackers.

Place your favorite holiday cookie cutter on the board first. Fill the cookie cutter with mini marshmallows. Next, layer the large items first. The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
