After spending more than 20 years in retail, I was ready for a change. I wanted to get more involved with the community that I called home. Getting the first issue of this magazine ready for printing has opened the door for me to meet so many local business owners and residents. I have learned so much about Eagan and the surrounding area in the last few months, and I am truly amazed by all the wonderful people I have met in that short time.  The first issue of Eagan City Lifestyle would not be here without the sup port of our Founding Partners. These businesses were willing to sit down and listen to my vision of what Eagan City Lifestyle would be, and they were willing to believe in that vision, resulting in the magazine you are holding in your hand. We greatly appreciate their support of and belief in what we are trying to do. If you like what you are reading, I humbly ask that you keep our advertisers in mind.  We want to hear from you: our readers! Your stories are what make Eagan City Lifestyle unique. Your stories inspire us and inspire others. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me (amy.sousa@citylifestyle.com) or our Editorial Coordinator, Shannon (shannon.hofer-pottala@citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend.

Welcome to the premier issue of Eagan City Lifestyle! We are inspired by community and hope you are too. We are excited to share with you wonder ful stories about the local businesses and neighbors that make Eagan the incredible place it is.  When my husband and I relocated to Minnesota sixteen years ago for work, we fell in love with the area, but it wasn't home. We moved from a small state where everyone knew everyone to a place where we were strangers. As we made more connections within the community, Minnesota became our home. We are hoping Eagan City Lifestyle will be your hub for what's going on in the community and a resource to learn about local businesses, whether you just moved here or you are a lifelong resident.

Thank you to all of my Founding Partners. I am forever grateful for all of you. SKIN CARE | BEAUTY CONTINUED > If you could have a machine perform the equivalent of 20,000 crunches for you in just 30 minutes, would you? The debate between vanity and confidence, exploitation and empowerment, is longstanding in the aesthetics industry. Love it or hate it, aesthetics is a popular field with a growing public intrigue. I sat down with Dr. Detlefsen, Lynn Broll, and Kathy Tolley of Expressions MD to learn more about the aesthetics industry from the insider perspective of the professionals who perform the treatments. WHAT IS EXPRESSIONS MD? Expressions MD is a medical spa, which is a hybrid between a day spa and a medical clinic. They offer many skincare treatments such as Botox to reduce lines and wrinkles, the Forever Young BBL VANITY—IT’S ARTICLE BY SHANNONPHOTOGRAPHYHOFER-POTTALABYLISACLINE LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE AESTHETICS INDUSTRY FROM THE PROFESSIONALS AT EXPRESSIONS MD. Although some procedures are time-intensive, “We can do things that are user-friendly, that don’t interrupt people’s daily lifestyles, and that they don’t need to worry about,” says Dr. Detlefsen. Treatment recommendations and consultations, which are free of charge and customized to each client, can consider activity level as a factor.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A TREATMENT OR PROCEDURE?

SKIN CARE | BEAUTY

14

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AESTHETICS?

Aside from the preplanned physical changes, like reducing the appearance of redness or wrinkles, there can be other physical and even mental impacts associated with getting an aesthetic treatment. Lynn Broll, who runs the CoolTone machine (the one that can do the equivalent of 20,000 crunches for you in only 30 minutes) says that core strengthening isn’t just to define abs. It can also be used to build muscle to improve movement.

“It’s really great to offer something that will fit into people’s busy lives and lifestyles,” says Dr. Detlefsen. Specific treatments have specific results and, if you’re new to aesthetics, specific terminology. In the aesthetics industry, prevention is a term used to describe procedures that avoid the deterioration or worsening of the skin. Maintenance describes proce dures that keep the skin in its current form. Correction is the word for treatments that undo imperfections in the skin.

to reduce the appearance of aging skin, MOXI laser treatments to brighten and refresh skin, Diamond Glow Facials to improve dryness and radiance, and CoolTone treatments to tone muscles and reduce fat, among other “Aestheticsprocedures.canbevery complicated and confusing to people. There’s so many products, procedures, and approaches to how people can love the way they look and love the way their skin feels,” says Dr. Detlefsen. “Our goal is to take all of that technol ogy, vet it out, check it out, and find procedures and approaches to aesthetics that are safe, that are effec tive, that give value, and that can be delivered within a trusted environment.”

Dr. Detlefsen, who worked as a primary care phy sician for 25 years before moving to the aesthetics industry, was fed up with the lack of importance of a personal touch that he found while working in tra ditional medicine. He wanted to be able to make and foster real connections with his clients. Aesthetics gave him that opportunity.

“Sun protection is the biggest. Correct sun protec tion,” agrees Kathy Tolley. Whether you choose aesthetics, sunscreen, both, or neither, the ability to feel great in your skin should not be taken for granted. Enjoy and appreciate yourself.

“It’s not vanity,” says Dr. Detlefsen. “It’s amazing.”

15| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/EAGANSEPTEMBER 2022

“It’s a very personal thing with people. You’re see ing parts of them that they don’t show anyone else,” says Lynn. “To be able to build that relationship, build that trust, find out what their goals are, and walk them through those goals is part of that vision.”

Dr. Detlefsen’s ability to build trust with his clients is not only necessary for business but also a point of pride. “Trust is really important to us,” says Dr. Detlefsen. “We want people to feel comfortable with the choices that they make. Trust is earned.”

WHAT SKINCARE ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE?

Additionally, a change in appearance can come with a boost in positive attitude and an increase in confi dence. As Dr. Detlefsen points out, “You look in the mirror and see that more confident you.”

“We want to be a very personable place that people can be comfortable in,” says Dr. Detlefsen. “We want everyone to feel that they’re getting trusted advice so that we can help them make decisions as to what they’re getting out of their aesthetic journey. We want to bring the quality approaches of medicine to the aesthetics field.”

“The only way to have reliable sun protection is to have a veil of clothing on or a veil of physical bar rier sunscreen, meaning one with zinc and titanium. Physical sunscreen is the number one thing that everyone can do to get their journey to healthy skin started. It’s really fun when the easy things get the best results,” says Dr. Detlefsen.

IS THERE ANYTHING PARTICULAR ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY THAT YOU LOVE BEING A PART OF?

You can’t beat this location in the Twin Cities. I tell out-oftowners that we are 15 minutes from anything you’d ever want: transportation, healthcare, entertainment; the list goes on. Even though this is a booming suburb, it really does have a sense of hometown pride and community and is very inclusive of the surrounding suburbs as well.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO EAGAN?

WHEN YOU SET OUT TO START YOUR BRICK-AND-MORTAR BUSINESS, WHAT WAS AT THE HEART OF YOUR MISSION? We wanted to be a home away from home for locals as well as people passing through, a different kind of meeting space, boutique, and coffee haus. We intentionally laid out our space with conference rooms and lots of conversation-friendly seat ing. We try to keep the temperature just right, our prices rea sonable, and music quiet enough that you never have trouble hearing. We want this to be the place to find that unique gift for any occasion or yourself, so we have baby and children’s items, household, apparel and accessories, as well as lots and lots of gifts. We try to have something in every price range (we have $30-$350 purses) and most of our gifts range from $7-$35.

CONTINUED > WHAT MAKES EAGAN, MN A GREAT PLACE TO BE?

We are passionate about being in the heart of Eagan and representing the HEART of Eagan. We waive our conference room rental fees during the day to nonprofits and close at 5pm in order for our space to be used in the evenings. We give dona tions and come alongside many organizations that already have a strong presence in our region. We are partnered with Common Ground, a non-profit that is all about bringing people together to find hope. That allows us to host evening recovery support groups, a bible study, and other community education and support events: Mental Health 101, Haiti disaster relief, Speed Dating, Motorcycle Blessing, etc. We care about the fos ter care system and host Foster Minnesota’s monthly support groups. We also host a quarterly Memorial Blood Drive that has consistently donated 100 units, potentially saving around 300 lives. We have featured a number of local artists in our boutique, many of whom give back to the community as well.

My family moved to Eagan in 2001 for work and have lived in a few different towns in Dakota County since then. We attended church and worked in Eagan since moving here. I am a chaplain with the Eagan Police Department and have felt the greatest sense of compassion and belonging here.

We have a secret menu (found online) that is full of THE BEST flavor combinations, which people love, but our Cafe Miel and Smoothies (try Pina Colada) are probably what we’re best known for. Our menu is full of light food options and the Renate Kasebrote, a toasted open faced German sandwich, is hands down our signature dish.  Vendella is our daughter’s name. It is of Swedish origin (Marcy’s origin) and means “Beautiful Adventure” with roots in the Vendel era in Scandinavia. It is said Ven-dell-uh. When we hire baristas at Vendella, we feel like we can teach anyone how to make great coffee. We care more about how they express their love of people. We have found our employees appreciate that we offer flexible schedules, a family atmosphere where you feel cared for, and lots of laughter.

Spending time outdoors and enjoying friends and family over good food and drinks is a great way to wrap up summer and wel come in fall. From the fresh flower arrangements to the locally sourced produce and herbs, this earthy spread is brimming with character and flavor. The organic cut herbs and handpicked wild flowers include a medley of Queen Anne’s lace, mint, sage, rose mary, lavender, lamb’s ear, nigella, buddleia, oregano, dill, fever few, and geranium, to name just a few of these beautiful blooms. What are we serving? We started with an arugula salad with grilled corn, shaved radishes with zucchini and goat cheese, served with a creamy lemon vinaigrette. Buttermilk brined fried chicken was a must for this outdoor party, which paired nicely with locally sourced roasted heirloom carrots drizzled with hot honey. El Ahumado, a delicious drink, rounded out our meal for the perfect sweet treat.  We wanted to share a few of our favorite recipes for you to try at home. Enjoy!

Did you ever have a dream come true? Sue Korkowski, owner of Indulge Boutique, has done just that.  Indulge Boutique, located at 1095 Diffley Road, has existed for 15 years. Prior to owning the business, Sue shopped at Indulge fre quently. She mentioned to the previous owners that she loved the store so much that she would want to buy it if they ever decided to sell it. Finally, the opportunity for Sue to become the store propri etor arose. Sue grabbed the opportunity and jumped in with both feet! Thanks to hard work, great determination, wonderful loyal customers, and a very supportive husband, Sue’s dream of owning the boutique came true. That was three and a half years ago.

HOW TO | SHOPPING28

Today, Sue and her team of Molly, Lisa, and Jean are ready to help women find just the right additions to their wardrobe. These ladies are help ful, knowledgeable, and share a knack for choosing items to create the per fect outfit, no matter the occasion. Indulge Boutique offers items at var ious price points and apparel from sizes XS to 1X. The boutique carries fashion brands including Joseph Ribkoff, a clas sic higher-end line of women’s clothing from Canada, as well as purses and accessories. Indulge also carries the fabulous and fun jewelry line French Kande. The collection at the boutique is constantly changing, ensuring that customers always have up-to-date and unique items to choose from.  Sue’s goal for the store is to make sure that everyone who visits can find some thing to purchase that makes them happy. In addition, Indulge Boutique prides itself on offering one-on-one attention to their customers, greeting each customer by name. Sue and her team welcome guests to pick out that perfect something for themselves, as a gift, or for their significant others.  Sue was previously a health care professional. She feels that running a boutique is not all that different from her previous vocation. She is still helping people feel better...just in a different way.

Indulge offers special events throughout the year such as their annual tent sale in July, trunk shows with Joseph Ribkoff, and even Bingo. Clearance items can be found marked down 20-60% off their orig inal prices. Store hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
