Danny Jaques remembers the exact day he became a space nerd. It was May 15, 1963. He was five years old, sitting in the living room in front of the black-and-white TV in his family’s farmhouse near Ignacio, Colorado.

Newscaster Walter Cronkite appeared on the screen as astronaut Gordon Cooper lifted off aboard Faith 7 on the last crewed mission of NASA’s Mercury program. Over the next 34 hours, Cooper orbited the Earth 22 times and became the first American to spend more than a full day in space. For a five-year-old farm kid in Southwest Colorado, that day changed everything. Jaques still gets chills when he thinks about it. “I remember telling my dad, that’s it, that’s what I want to do.” His father replied, “Well, you know, you can do anything you want to, Danny, as long as you’re home to do your chores by 6 o’clock”, Jaques recalled.

From that day on, Jaques’s cosmic curiosity blasted off. He knew if he couldn’t become an astronaut, he would do everything possible to at least become astronaut-adjacent.

That took the form of attaining a scholarship to attend Fort Lewis College, where he earned a degree in biology, and then becoming a middle school math and science teacher in Ignacio, a role he held for over three decades. “I told myself, if I can’t be an astronaut, I’m going to give back to my community and become a science teacher.

So that’s what I did,” Jaques said. Every year, during the last quarter of school, Jaques’s teaching was devoted to the subject dearest to his heart: space science. Students examined the history of the universe and space exploration, and immersed themselves in the mechanics of rocket building, some of which were launched from Jaques’s family property, eventually earning it the nickname “Rocket Ranch.”

In 1992, the gravitational pull of outer space brought Jaques, his wife and two young daughters to Huntsville, Alabama, where Jaques toured the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home to the Space Camp program. There, he met with staff and crew chiefs and witnessed, up close, the hands-on educational experience that is Space Camp, where participants train like astronauts and even participate in a mock-up space mission. Jaques remembers his time there fondly. “I was like a kid in a candy store,” he said. After his tour, he knew he had to bring kids here to experience it. The following year, thanks to scholarship assistance from a fellow teacher, Jaques chaperoned two lucky students attending Space Camp. Then, in the Fall of 1996, Jaques helped raise funds through raffles, candy sales, car washes, and other endeavors to send 56 students to Space Camp the following summer. They chartered a large bus and drove all 56 kids and chaperones to Huntsville. “It was magical,” Jaques recalled. So far, Jaques has helped 567 students attend Space Camp, earning him a place in the distinguished Space Camp Hall of Fame in 2010. For the camp participants, it’s the ultimate space dream come true. Fifteen-year-old Space Camp attendee Estevan Medina remembers the highlight of his week there. “My favorite part at camp was making a rocket together with the other campers. I was proud my rocket was one that successfully launched,” he said. “It was a lot of fun.”

Despite success raising funds for scholarships, the money was always the most challenging part. Car washes and candy sales could only stretch so far. To close that gap, in 2018 Jaques began exploring a business idea that drew on another one of his passions: cooking. The first product was hiding in his own kitchen all along. It was a fresh salsa recipe he’d been perfecting for 40 years. Over nine months and 13 test batches, he reverse-engineered it into a dehydrated, “just add water” version, creating, as Jaques puts it, “the only one of its kind in the known universe.” The stars aligned and Danny’s Rocket Ranch launched in August 2020 with a single salsa, Danny’s Rocket Ranch Martian Spicy Original. The business has since grown to nearly 20 “space-certified” products, including five salsa flavors, the Marsarita Mix, and Alien Abduction Coffee, among others. All products are ideal for space travel or a more terrestrial earthbound camping trip. Ten percent of annual profits go to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Education Foundation for Space Camp scholarships.

For Jaques, however, the products he sells aren’t the endgame so much as the engine. Ask him what motivates him to keep on going, and it isn’t salsa. It’s the kids. And Jaques has no plans of slowing down. It’s his ultimate mission to endow scholarships for students in grades 4-12 to attend Space Camp in perpetuity and to continue inspiring kids to reach for the stars long after he’s gone. “It’s why I get up in the morning.”

From Student to Steward An FLC alum follows her passion, inspiring youth through outdoor education and hands-on learning Haley Perez grew up in the Nambe Pueblo in Northern New Mexico, surrounded by enchanting desert landscapes. A few miles outside her Pueblo, in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristos, lies a desert oasis with beautiful waterfalls framed by lush greenery, truly an anomaly in the arid climate.

As a kid, she often visited the waterfalls, exploring dirt paths, hiking to the falls, admiring the phenomenal views, and camping under the stars with her family. Admiration and respect for nature were instilled in Perez from a young age. She said, “I’ve always been taught to take care of the land around me. And that fostered my love for the environment.”

Looking back on cherished memories of this beautiful place, Perez believes the falls sparked her love and curiosity for water. This became a major influence throughout her studies and eventually led her to pursue a career in the environmental sector.

Perez attended Fort Lewis College and earned two bachelor’s degrees in environmental studies and public health. These two areas of study blended magnificently, piquing her interest in how humans interact with the environment and create systems to best serve and maintain public health.

In the summer of 2022, Perez traveled abroad for the first time to conduct research in Tanzania. Her research focused on how water quality affects communities and their quality of life. This experience combined her fields of study, opening her eyes to new possibilities and boosting her confidence.

Shortly after returning to Durango, Perez began another research project, collecting water samples in the Weminuche Wilderness.

For several weeks, a small research team backpacked through the Weminuche in search of E. coli in the water. Perez reflected, saying, “It was so cool to be able to have that adventurous side. But also, we were conducting research, monitoring a natural resource, and protecting the public.” Her findings on human bacteroides were used to monitor human fecal contamination in the backcountry.

After graduating, Perez served as an AmeriCorps member and began working at The Mountain Studies Institute (MSI) as an Outdoor Education Technician. She speaks fondly of this experience, noting that she gained many skills and learned specific tools to best accommodate different learning styles and attention spans.

Perez now serves as the Community Science Program Coordinator for MSI. She loves her job, noting, “it’s the perfect amount of science and the perfect amount of people.” In this role, she organizes educational programs for all ages and volunteer opportunities through citizen science initiatives. As an outdoor educator, Perez also teaches environmental sciences, including forest health, wildlife ecology, water quality, snow science, and more. She said, “The environmental education realm here in Durango is so rich, it’s amazing!

I’ve never seen such a place that has so many outlets for that.”

MSI has a saying: “The outdoors are our classroom.” A great example of this is their Rising River Stewards. Offered to students in grades 6-12, this after-school program explores environmental topics through hands-on learning. Students visit the Animas River and learn about its ecology through water-quality and forest-health activities, understanding how healthy ecosystems are complex and deeply interconnected. They also work on a research project of their choosing to present at MSI’s Annual Spring Youth Summit.

“For me, growing up, going outside was such a big influence and probably why I decided to go into this career in the first place,” said Perez. Through their programs and outreach, the Community Science Team at MSI hopes to foster students’ connection to nature and inspire the next generation of scientists and stewards.

In a world built around instant gratification, learning an instrument remains one of the few pursuits that offers no shortcuts.

No app can make a young violinist play in tune overnight. No algorithm can teach a trumpet player to persevere through a difficult passage. Progress comes through practice, patience, mistakes, and the willingness to try again tomorrow.

That reality is part of what makes the San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestra (SJSYO) so powerful.

Serving nearly 100 students from 20 schools across Southwest Colorado and Northwest New Mexico, the program brings together young musicians for weekly rehearsals, inspiring performances, and a shared community.

While students certainly develop musical skills, the lessons they carry with them extend far beyond the concert hall.

“Learning an instrument teaches young people something that’s increasingly rare,” says Youth Orchestra Director Molly Jensen. “You have to be willing to be bad at something before you become good at it. That process develops confidence and resilience that translate into every area of life.”

For many students, the orchestra becomes a place where growth happens in small steps.

Youth Symphony Concertmaster Alex Chasse credits her time with the orchestra for helping her become a stronger leader and musician. “My skills as a collaborative musician have skyrocketed. Since joining the junior orchestra in 2020, I have had the opportunity to gain experience working within a section and to understand what it means to blend my sound and energy with my peers.”

Embracing challenges prepares students for success in school, careers, and relationships. Every rehearsal requires accountability and teamwork.

Students learn to arrive prepared, listen carefully, and contribute to something larger than themselves.

Every member of the ensemble plays a role.

Those skills are reinforced through one of the program’s most beloved traditions: Bravo Buddies.

Each Junior Orchestra member is paired with an older student mentor who provides encouragement and musical guidance throughout the season. These relationships help younger musicians feel welcome while giving older students an opportunity to develop leadership skills.

For cellist Tommy Silvester-Jensen, the sense of community has been most impactful.

“Youth orchestra has given me a stable community of friends unlike any other I’ve known, and Bravo Buddies has helped me feel even more connected to the larger symphony community while building my confidence as a mentor.”

The impact extends beyond rehearsals. Parents often notice increased confidence, responsibility, and a sense of belonging.

Erin Cuthbertson has watched her five children thrive as members of the orchestra.

“The San Juan Youth Symphony brings students together in a way that is distinct from their local school experiences. Through learning to listen thoughtfully, collaborate effectively, and harmonize their individual sounds, they embark on an extraordinary journey that fosters not only musical talent but also teamwork and personal development,” she says.

“For many kids, this experience is truly a gift that adds great meaning to their educational path.”

Research consistently shows that participation in the arts supports academic achievement and social-emotional development, but the effects are often most evident in everyday moments: students who speak up more confidently in class or persist through setbacks.

In the SJSYO, students experience those lessons week after week alongside peers from across the Four Corners region.

Every performance reflects months of preparation and practice. Along the way, students learn that meaningful accomplishments rarely happen overnight.

As technology continues to make life immediate and automated, experiences like this have become increasingly valuable. Learning an instrument asks young people to trust the process, invest time without immediate rewards, keep going even when progress feels slow, and recognize the rewards that come with perseverance.

The San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestra isn’t simply training the next generation of musicians. It’s helping develop the next generation of leaders, educators, arts supporters,

community builders—young people who understand the value of hard work, preparation, collaboration, and perseverance.

Years from now, many of these students may not remember every note they played. But they will remember what it felt like to work hard toward a goal alongside their friends and to accomplish something they once thought was beyond their reach.

And that may be the most important lesson of all: possibility isn’t something you’re given. It’s something you practice.

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage.

Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s.

“There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Think back to your school days. You probably remember algebra formulas and historical dates, but do you remember learning to create a budget, understand a credit score, or plan for your financial future?

For many adults, those lessons came through experience— sometimes the hard way.

That realization inspired Know Your Dough, a Southwest Colorado nonprofit dedicated to helping young people build the financial skills they’ll use throughout their lives. Founded in 2013, after Colorado adopted personal financial literacy standards for K–12 education, the organization partners with schools and community groups to deliver practical, hands-on financial education in the classroom.

Through interactive activities and real-world scenarios, students learn about budgeting, saving, investing, credit, debt, and setting financial goals. Rather than simply teaching numbers, the program helps young people understand how everyday financial decisions shape future opportunities.

Over the past decade, Know Your Dough has reached thousands of students across Southwest Colorado, giving them the confidence to make informed decisions before entering the workforce, heading to college, or opening their first bank account.

Financial literacy may not be the topic students discuss most after class, but it could become one of the lessons they value most later in life. By preparing young people for the realities of adulthood, Know Your Dough is investing in stronger families, stronger communities, and a brighter future for us all.
