LIFESTYLE LETTER
In the Spirit of Giving
December 2023 PUBLISHER
Branden (Brandy) Murray branden.murray@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Hello and welcome to our Holidays & Giving issue, This is a wonderful time of year in our community, and we are excited to bring you this issue, highlighting some spectacular seasonal events and opportunities to give back to those in need. The holidays are a particularly reflective time where I count my blessings and take in every moment as it comes, tucking each memory in my heart and holding onto it tightly. Whether it be skiing with family or watching the snow fall from a cozy coffee shop, there truly isn’t a corner in this town that isn’t touched by the magic of the season, and getting to call Durango ‘home’ is always at the top of my gratitude list. Each of our local shops, restaurants, and businesses work overtime to make this magic a reality for our city’s residents and guests alike, and I can’t express enough gratitude to the owners and staff who make it all happen. I am also grateful that our community continues showing up for each other. From our annual Festival of Trees benefiting Community Connections to the Stuff the Truck event benefiting La Plata Family Centers Coalition, Durango always rallies around our phenomenal nonprofits, which give so much to our community and beyond. Last but not least, I am grateful to be raising two beautiful children with my husband in this beautiful corner of the world and seeing it all anew through their eyes. Each train ride is a new adventure, and the hot chocolate tastes a bit sweeter because of them. I want to encourage you, our reader, to reflect on what you are most grateful for and find even one small way to support our community. Whether you donate to one of our fantastic animal rescues, volunteer some time, or shop locally for gifts, the community as a whole will benefit greatly. Happy Holidays, and thank you for reading!

Meal Overboard! Local Charcuter-queen Dishes Her Secrets on Crafting the Ultimate Grazing Board
Deck the halls! Dust the nooks! Relatives shall converge for a holiday feast at your house. It’s that most wonderful time of merriment…until personal opinions collide and worldviews jostle. Better enlist the ultimate ambassador. “Charcuterie […] makes everyone happy,” attests Elizabeth Philbrick, co-owner of EsoTerra Ciderworks, an establishment synonymous with wine-like ciders and jaw-dropping grazing boards.
Inedible garnishes are a waste of time, money, and taste.
Grazing boards are grand assemblies of any snackable foods. By contrast, a charcuterie (sharh-KOO-tuh-ree) board showcases a selection of cured meats expertly paired with foods that enhance flavors and textures.

FROM SURVIVAL TO SPLENDID
Grazing board cousins span the globe, dating back eons. Before refrigerators, food preservation via curing, fermenting, and pickling shepherded humankind through sparse seasons. Today’s grazing boards are quite glamorous. “The first bite is always with your eyes,” Philbrick says. She also notes the best boards will capture the local goût de terroir, or the quintessential flavors of a region infused by climate, soils, and elevation.
“A charcuterie board made in Durango is going to taste very different from one made in Denver if you’re doing it right,” she says. In other words, the grazing board you make can literally taste like “home for the holidays,” especially if you follow her One, Two, Three: Charcuterie guide for crafting the ultimate board.
STEP ONE: BOARDS, BOTTLES, BUILDINGS
Cutting board, plate, or platter—boards can be any item. Before any food adorns that board, first select a bottle. Determine the bottle of wine, cider, or special beverage you’ll be serving. As Philbrick advises, “A properly made charcuterie board […] elevates the wine experience.”
The buildings transform flat, boring boards into 3-D kingdoms decked with towers, teepees, and pyramids of food.
The drink shrinks your choices from endless to salient. Bold, tannic wines pair with earthy palates. White wines pair with creamy flavors.

Time to erect some buildings. Use the jars of jams, mustards, dips, and spreads. Ramekins are great, too. Establish these vessels as bulwarks across the board. “[These items] are places to lean things up against,” Philbrick notes.
Folding the meats like Elizabethan neck ruffs is visually spectacular and smart. Guests can more easily nab their desired slices.
Replicate clusters of your chosen items across the board.
STEP TWO: BASES, BIGGIES, BUDDIES
Layer the board with a base like arugula or cabbage. Inedible garnishes are a waste of time, money, and taste, Philbrick notes. Biggies come next, as in the big flavor items like meats and cheeses. Nest in your buddy flavors, such as sliced fruits, veggies, pickled items, and breads or crackers. For the grand finale, add berries, nuts, and dried fruits, like apricots and crystallized ginger.
STEP THREE: BETS AND BEDFELLOWS
It’s a well-kept secret that the best grazing boards bet on lucky coins. Heads or tails? It’s a coin—you can’t have one without the other. Sweet demands sour. Pickled needs fresh. Soft accompanies crunchy. While placing your “bets,” allow the edibles to be bedfellows. As they caress, drip, and cuddle, new flavor combinations emerge, seducing guests to mix and match unusual items. By now, your board should resemble a treasure chest of colorful gems, vibrant jewels, delicate pearls, and gleaming gold coins. That means you’re ready to make your loved ones feel truly treasured.

Durango Gives Back OUR LIST OF LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP OTHERS THIS SEASON ARTICLE BY RACHEL ROSENTHAL
Durango is a community that looks out for one another. During this season, many opportunities are available to give back to those in need. Here, we highlight three local causes you can support in the spirit of giving. From La Plata County's homeless animals to children in need of a bit of holiday magic to a community staple providing priceless support to individuals with disabilities, many will benefit from your generosity and care.
LA PLATA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY LPCHS cares for around 3,000 animals annually. With support from the community, they can provide life-saving programs that contribute to reducing pet overpopulation and surrendered or unwanted animals. LPCHS will have Christmas trees throughout Durango this holiday season with ornaments containing a wish list item for the shelter. Select as many ornaments as you like, and help the homeless animals of La Plata County. For more information on donating, visit https://lpchumanesociety.org/.

Glow Up ASHLEY SUTTON OF MOUNTAIN BEAUTY MED SPA SHARES HER TIPS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN RADIANT ARTICLE BY RACHEL ROSENTHAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA BARRETT PHOTOGRAPHY
The trees may have shed their leaves and turned in until spring, but these chilly winter months are no reason to abandon your radiant glow. In fact, they provide the perfect opportunity to 'glow up' and step into the skin you are meant to have. Born and raised in Colorado, Ashley Sutton understands the unique impact our climate has on our skin. From the dry air and abundance of sunlight to the dramatic shift in temperature that can happen in 24 hours, our skin requires a little extra TLC to age gracefully in our Southwestern Colorado landscape. As a teen, Ashley struggled with acne, which led to a sharp decline in confidence and self-image. At a loss for what to do, her mother took her to an esthetician for help. This small step changed the trajectory of Ashley’s life forever. “She talked to me about my skin’s health and gave me so many tools to heal it from the inside out. My confidence blossomed, drastically changing my life,” said Ashley. This shift in confidence inspired Ashley to devote her time to helping others nurture their inner and outer beauty. Residing on nine and a half acres with her husband and children – plus their mini-farm complete with goats, chickens, pigs, and turkeys – Ashley brings individualized care to her patients from her cozy

mountain oasis. ”We view our patients as individuals, not a number. When you come to Mountain Beauty Medspa, we focus on more than just your skin. We also focus on all that encompasses your inner beauty and treat your skin to match.” Ashley sat down with us to discuss her top tips to keep your skin nourished and glowing through the harsh winter months and beyond. Keep these tips on hand to elevate your skincare routine and find your true glow.
TIP ONE - VITAMIN C Ashley recommends doing this first thing in the morning. Vitamin C serum applied after cleansing the skin and before applying sunscreen boosts your collagen production to help fight fine lines and complements sunscreen with extra protection from free radicals.
TIP TWO - DRINK WATER Our arid climate and high altitude make it hard to stay adequately hydrated, impacting your skin's health. Ashley encourages everyone to drink extra water to combat these effects.
TIP THREE - CREATE A BARRIER A quality, mineral-based sunscreen will go a long way to protect your skin in our sunny environment. Don’t skip this step when the weather is colder! Ashley suggests finding a tinted sunscreen that doubles as a concealer so your skin doesn’t look chalky or discolored. A hat provides an extra layer of protection as well.
TIP FOUR - VITAMIN A
“When you come to Mountain Beauty Medspa, we focus on more than just your skin.”
Ashley stresses the importance of using vitamin A (or retinol) serum in the evening (when your skin grows) as it helps your body develop new skin cells.
TIP FIVE - TREATMENTS THAT PACK A PUNCH Ashley recommends getting skin treatments, like (IPL photofacial treatments) when post-procedure care is more easily managed due to reduced sun exposure. Treatments complement your daily routine to create a more pronounced and lasting effect. Mountain Beauty Medspa offers microdermabrasion, chemical peels, micro-needling, IPL laser treatment for hyperpigmentation, Botox, and fillers. They also carry a complete line of Obagi skincare products, perfect for Colorado’s dry climate. New clients receive 20% off their first service.

Giving Campaign
2023 30
O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

Cozy Decor 3. Smell and texture collide with a cleverly filled wooden bowl.
1. Cozy up with warm lighting provided by candles and string lights.

2. Churro sheepskin throws can be found at Handcrafted House.
SHERYL LOCK OF HANDCRAFTED HOUSE SHARES HER TOP 3 WINTER TRENDS 1- Set the mood with light. Drape mantels and curtain rods with white light strands and place a cluster of candles atop a wooden platform. A long whiskey barrel candle holder (carried in-store) brings a linear element to your table. 2- Add rich textures. Cozy up any space with throw blankets and churro sheepskins (also carried in-store) draped over seating areas. Use neutral colors, wood, wool, and natural materials. Hint: You can also bring these elements into your office. 3- Warm up all your senses. A wooden bowl filled with a mix of pine cones, oranges with cloves, pine sprigs, and balls wrapped in yarn with a few drops of essential oil creates a room that smells as cozy as it looks.
