Shattering Glass Ceilings

I am honored to welcome you to our coveted Women's issue. This month is dedicated to celebrating the remarkable strength, resilience, and boundless creativity that define the women of Dripping Springs.

Women are the heart of our town. From entrepreneurs to stay-at-home moms, executives, and teachers, each navigates a path that takes hard work and determination, and each path makes an impact in shaping our community.

During my first pregnancy, I juggled the demands of a corporate role in sales and advertising, fully intending to return to work after my maternity leave. However, as my maternity leave dwindled and I sat on the sofa watching HGTV with my newborn son nestled on my legs, I was overcome with emotions—I simply couldn't bear to part with him. The weight of this decision grew heavier with each passing day. While our family relied on my part of the income and I enjoyed my professional pursuits, the pull of motherhood tugged at me in ways I hadn't anticipated.

Navigating new-mom emotions is hard enough, but throwing in a life-altering decision so quickly after having a baby would spin our world into even more chaos. Should I choose to be the powerful working woman providing for her family? Or be the powerful stay-at-home mom providing for her family?

Although it was initially daunting in terms of financial risk, my ultimate decision to stay home proved to be a rewarding leap of faith. I didn’t sit still for long as my creative side began to burn … I picked up a camera and embarked on my journey in entrepreneurialism. Without that decision to leave my corporate job, my career and love of photography may never have come to fruition.

Being a woman and mother, our decisions are not just strategic; they are heartfelt. We yearn to feel valued, to contribute, but we are often weighed down as we question, “Am I doing enough?” Let me tell you, sister, you are enough.

As you turn the pages, may you be inspired by the stories of our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends who have overcome challenges and forged new paths. They remind us that no dream is too big and no obstacle is too daunting to overcome. Women are invaluable, and you were made to shatter glass ceilings.

To My Bride

To my bride,

With May 2024 descending upon us, I find myself in a continuous state of gratefulness for the life we have built together.  This letter is certain to be a futile attempt at expressing my gratitude specifically as it relates to you. Seventeen years ago we started down this path of establishing a relationship that ultimately would be rooted in the truth of God’s grace—there is simply no other justification for how we’ve come to this moment.  You have taught me a level of loyalty and love by your unconditional devotion to me and to our family.  The faith in me that you have demonstrated for nearly two decades has enabled me to overcome deeply embedded insecurities I didn’t even know existed within me.  You quite literally are the most beautiful human being I know, and the idea that you chose to marry me still confuses me at times.  I mostly want to just say thank you.  Thank you for being the mom you are to our boys.  Thank you for being the bonus mom to our Isaac since he was a toddler.  Thank you for your patience during this journey we’ve ventured on together that has not always been smooth sailing.  You empower me to lead this family while being the true anchor.  This month we will celebrate your birthday and Mother’s Day. On these two days, we will likely fall short in conveying just how special you are to us, but we will try our best nonetheless.  I thank the Lord for you daily. I always have and I always will.

EMPOWERING CONFIDENCE

Courtney Deavers, a nurse practitioner and owner of the new boutique med spa Face Alchemy, holds firm to the belief that confidence is the cornerstone of success in all spheres of life. Her heartfelt mission is to uplift individuals by nurturing the self-assurance they rightfully deserve.

Deavers’ medical journey began as a firefighter paramedic for Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. While working for the department, she graduated from nursing school and eventually went on to complete her master’s degree, obtaining her family nurse practitioner certification. Inspired by an acquaintance's involvement in aesthetics, she trained under a plastic surgeon and fell in love with being an aesthetic injector.

Relocating to Texas in 2019 with her husband and three children, Deavers balanced work in the emergency room during the coronavirus pandemic with telehealth appointments to prioritize family time. With her children soon entering preschool, she saw an opportunity to reenter the aesthetics field.

Breaking the Stigma of Facial Aesthetics

SPA DAY | BEAUTY
22

Despite varying opinions on facial aesthetics, as of 2023 the number of people receiving treatments is at an all-time high. This begs the question: Why the hesitancy?

According to Deavers, many first-time consultees express fear of looking unnatural or unlike themselves when considering injectables such as Botox or filler. Poorly executed treatments, resulting in overly plumped lips or exaggerated features, contribute to a negative perception of injectables. Deavers believes lax regulations, as well as lack of training and artistic skill among practitioners, have led to such outcomes and tarnished the industry's reputation.

Motivated by the negative stigma surrounding the industry, Deavers aimed to change that by offering conservative aesthetic treatments at her private practice in Dripping Springs.

“After your procedure you should still look like the beautiful person you were born to be,” she says. No one wants to see old friends and have them stand in shock trying to figure out if you’re the same person that signed their yearbook. That is far from the end goal. Natural beauty, elevated, is the end goal.”

Face Alchemy aims to provide a trustworthy space for conservative aesthetic enhancements, reflecting Deavers’ personal approach and values. She looks forward to contributing to the Dripping Springs community by fostering confidence and self-assurance.

The Story of Rosewood

Childhood Dreams to Reality

I always knew I would have my own brand one day. At nine years old, I remember visiting my family in Mexico, with fabrics in one hand and sketches in the other. My grandmother’s neighbor was a dressmaker, and she would bring to life the dresses that danced in my head.

As a Texas girl, I moved to Los Angeles and pursued a career in fashion design, and before I knew it, I was knee-deep in designing for a high-end women's brand, living what I thought was the dream. Yet something didn’t feel right. I felt a tug, a need to create something of my own, something that spoke to my soul.

In 2018 I welcomed my first daughter and found myself newly immersed in the world of children's clothing, where I struggled to find the premium fabrics I cherished in my professional life. It was during this search that Rosewood was born. More than just a brand, it became a love letter to my daughter, a promise to clothe her in the best I know.

Since our debut, the response has been overwhelming.  Every day, we receive messages from parents sharing their child's love for Rosewood and, in particular, our fabric. This fabric, the heart of Rosewood, brings our journey full circle, embodying the very essence of what we set out to create.

Motherhood and entrepreneurship are a delicate dance, both all-consuming and challenging to balance.  In choosing my own path, I know I either get to work hard to build my own dreams, or someone else will hire me to build theirs. Every day I think about the two little girls who are watching my every move, and I am reminded that quitting is not an option. By doing so, I hope to be an inspiration to my daughters to one day follow their dreams with unwavering passion.

Rosewood isn't just a brand; it's a testament to chasing dreams, to the beauty of fabric, and to the joy of dressing the ones we love most.

A Voice for the Voiceless

Vanessa Speaking at the Rescue One More Banquet
“I decided if there was a chance my story could help, I needed to share it.”

But this display of resilience isn’t reserved for men alone.

Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, and Malala Yousafzai are among the more notable women who’ve overcome unspeakable trauma and helped countless others along the way.

Amidst the ranks of these extraordinary women is another young woman whose name you may not know.

Her name is Vanessa Lambie. She’s your neighbor and my adopted daughter.

Like Oprah (who’s been vocal about the child abuse she experienced), Vanessa endured horrific abuse as a child. With her permission, I’d like to share a bit of her story to encourage those of you working to overcome trauma or support others through the process.

I first met Vanessa in October 2011. At the time, I was living with my family in Uganda (a small country

in East Africa). My husband, Scott, and I were visiting the local child welfare office to get paperwork signed for the adoption of two of our children.

Upon entering the office, we immediately gazed upon a child crouching in the corner. Scared eyes peered out from the dirty yellow blanket draped over her. She looked so frail and vulnerable, my heart ached for her.

She had been brought in that morning after staying in a jail cell for two weeks, the officer told us. Jail was the safest place they could find for the 11-yearold after she disclosed to the police the abuse she’d experienced at home.

He couldn’t help us that day, he explained, because he had to figure out where she would sleep that night.

Before he finished explaining, Scott’s arms were around Vanessa.

“She can sleep at our house,” I said. “She can stay as long as she needs to.”

Lambie Family

Within minutes, foster care orders were drawn up and signed, and we were on our way home.

It didn’t take long for us to fall in love.

Vanessa flourished in our family setting. She adjusted well to life with our five children, quickly caught up in school, excelled in athletics, and loved throwing dance parties for her friends.

After five years of foster care, Vanessa became our daughter.

In 2016, our family returned to the U.S. It was about this time that Vanessa’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) kicked in. The intensity and frequency of her nightmares increased. She experienced bouts of depression.

But as her PTSD intensified, so did her desire to help other children going through what she’d experienced.

This phenomenon is known as post-traumatic growth (PTG), or a newfound sense of personal strength that’s often marked by a desire to help others. (Alas, humanity’s great mystery is solved!)

PTG is what led Oprah to voice her experiences and advocate for others. It’s what motivated Maya Angelou to write I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It’s what stirred Vanessa’s soul to help other children.

In 2020, upon graduating from Dripping Springs High School, Vanessa decided to share her story publicly.

“So many children in Uganda are going through what I went through, but few ever speak out or seek help. I decided if there was a chance my story could help, I needed to share it,” Vanessa says.

In 2021, inspired by her courage and resolve, Scott and I joined forces with Vanessa to launch Rescue One More, Inc., a registered nonprofit organization bringing safety, justice, and healing to child survivors of abuse in Uganda.

“So many children in Uganda are going through what I went through, but few ever speak out or seek help.”

It takes a lot of courage to do what Vanessa did, but we believe God is using her story to help survivors around the world. We’ve seen her story inspire children to come forward, and we’re committed to doing whatever we can to ensure they have access to safety, justice, and healing.

We’ve also seen the extraordinary impact that transpires when one person’s courage collides with the kindness and generosity of a community.

You see, most of our supporters are right here in Dripping Springs. It’s been incredible to see our community here come together to transform communities on the other side of the world.

So far, thanks to our friends and neighbors, we’ve:

• Rescued 108 children from abuse and trafficking

• Provided 225 children with critical services

• Arrested 157 perpetrators

• Trained more than 61,000 parents, teachers, and children on child safeguarding and abuse prevention

Through her own courage and fortitude, Vanessa is transforming lives. But through the support of her community, she may just change the world.

Dear Younger Me,

Your mom was right. About everything.

About … being patient with your “awkward years”—you know the ones. They’re short-lived; you will blossom and become the best you. Embrace everything that makes you unique. Being YOU is your greatest asset.

About … the days may be long, but the years are oh-so short. You may have a bad day, but make it a great life.

About … that guy. He’s not worth your tears. There will be others, and you will be okay.

About … not sweating the small stuff. Spoiler alert: It’s all small stuff.

About … chasing your dreams, finding your passion, and giving it your all. Always be the hardest worker in every room you enter.

About … money not meaning happiness. Trust me, you can chase it, but you’ll never find “the end.”

About … sunscreen. You cannot put enough on. Trust me.

About … being present. You’ll never get time back; don’t waste it. Easier said than done, but life has a way of making this real in very hard ways.

About … being confident in your abilities, not buying into “imposter syndrome,” and breaking all the “ceilings” meant to keep you in a box. Break them all.

About … keeping your word and being a good human. You will make mistakes; some will be bigger than others, and you may even hurt people along the way. Be the first to apologize. Do your best to make it right and learn from your mistakes. Don’t make the same one twice; then it becomes your character.

About … your gut. Trust it; it will never steer you wrong.

About … YOU; You are ENOUGH.

Dear Younger Me,

You are facing some challenging things. You lack stability, focus, and the motivation to do better. You don’t feel like you excel at anything in particular. Here’s the thing: The character qualities that make you unique will see you through! You have a heart for serving others, and you excel at building connections.

You will inherit your mother’s grit and perseverance, with a touch of your father’s fiery passion. This will drive you to be the first in your immediate family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and, eventually, a master’s degree. In college, you will meet a professor who changes your trajectory in life. That professor’s intentional time spent growing you as a reader will pull all of the pieces together. You will spend your adult life striving to do exactly what that professor did—to be a person who makes a difference in the lives of others.

I wish you knew that, despite your personal and educational struggles, you will find your passion. You are uniquely equipped to take on a leadership position as the director of the Dripping Springs Community Library. You have made a difference in the lives of your students as an elementary school librarian, and you will desire to extend that reach even deeper in your community. Embrace your unique path with confidence and determination— it’s bound to be an extraordinary ride!

All my love,

Future

Mindy Laird

Dear Younger Me,

I’ll begin by writing to you when you were a young girl, unsure of yourself, dreadfully fearful you wouldn’t amount to much. Spoiler: One day you are utterly set free from that fear. Eventually you do accept that your value isn’t wrapped up in accomplishments, popularity, or money.

I know you often feel painfully misunderstood, that it’s challenging to express your feelings and mind clearly. But don’t worry, because you’re going to grow, which will be treacherous sometimes. Try to remember that you are uniquely and wonderfully made as you experience overwhelming doubt in your abilities, insecurity in your appearance, and confusion as to why you were given this personality. That sensitive nature of yours and vibrant imagination leaves you feeling isolated while aching for someone to understand you. With time you’ll realize that what seems like a flaw is a gift. Even the tears won’t be wasted.

Do not lean on your own strength. There is someone working in you and all around you. Just keep your eyes off of yourself and others. Look up! The day comes (before you know it) when you’re able to see how those “weaknesses” are being refined into strengths as you thoughtfully and lovingly tend to your husband, children, and home.

You also have the privilege of working alongside your husband to create and perform in a television show for children, bringing joy to many families. All the trials and growing pains provide fuel for creativity and deeper expression as you create a world within “Gus Plus Us,” which represents wonder and the beauty of childhood. Humility overcomes you because you know that your talents, your personality, your very essence are a gift from God. Trust Him.

With all my heart,

Dear Younger Me,

I have great news for you: It all works out. Even when it doesn’t feel like it is, when you’re not getting that “thing” you want at the time (there will be lots of these!)—that job, that relationship, that house, that news—it’s still all working out for you the way it’s meant to. There is a path for you, precious girl! Know that every hardship ahead of you is an opportunity to learn and grow, and that every bright spot ahead of you is a chance to feel and express gratitude. Mom is right (ha!) when she says “this too shall pass.” The hard days, the dark moments, even the wonderful times—they are all fleeting.

Prepare to be surprised by the things that life throws your way from time to time. Slow down and look around at the scenery when life is being extra good to you. Give love endlessly to the people who love you in return and who recognize and value how special you are. Remember that you know yourself better than anyone else ever can or will, and listen to your truest voice inside to guide you through uncertain times.

And, hey, it’s okay to not know what you want to be when you grow up. Your unique light and talents will guide you into some of the coolest job opportunities and will take you places that you can’t even imagine right now! Enjoy the ride and try to leave this place a little better than you found it.

Oh, and by the way, grown-ups DON’T have it all figured out! They’re just regular human beings like you, doing their best with what they’ve got.

With love and excitement for all that is ahead of you,

A RedemptionStory

Twenty-four years ago, I spent two weeks in the hospital after I nearly destroyed my life and brain with drugs and alcohol. By the grace of God, I survived and went on a mission to inspire others. I wrote a book and appeared on Oprah, MTV, and other shows to share my story. I began speaking in schools, colleges, and jails throughout the country.

My entrance into sobriety was pure misery. For several years, I was filled with so much pain, shame, and anger; I just wanted to make it all go away. Past experiences replayed in my mind like a bloody horror film, torturing me over and over again. I blamed myself, blamed my past, and put all of my focus on what had gone wrong. If my childhood wasn't so dysfunctional, if I had never used drugs, if I didn’t move to New York City, and on and on. I was exhausted and going nowhere, a dog chasing its own tail. It finally hit me: I could either keep getting sucked backwards—continuing to spiral in a vicious cycle, fighting with the ghosts of my past, feeling miserable and paralyzed— or I could try a new way.

Through many dark nights, a lot of prayer, and therapy, I came to understand that fighting with my past was a sheer waste of precious time.

Through many dark nights, a lot of prayer, and therapy, I came to understand that fighting with my past was a sheer waste of precious time. Trying to undo what I or my family or the drugs had done was getting me nowhere. If, in fact, the trauma of my childhood and the drugs had destroyed many years of my life, why was I going to let them destroy even more?

Exhausted, I waved the white flag and decided that I didn’t want life to be a daily fight anymore. I wanted to thrive, not merely survive. I began to say yes to life, seeing that every day is not a fight but an opportunity. I said yes to life’s joy but also to life’s heartache and suffering. Once I began to accept all of my life experiences as gifts from above rather than battles that needed to be overcome, everything began to change.

In Hebrew the word “sin” means “to miss the mark.” Over the years, I have come to understand the greatest sin of our world is to miss life, to waste the present time, to throw away this beautiful day we have been blessed with. For many, many years, I allowed my past to destroy my present, but not anymore.

So here I am 24 years later, sitting at my kitchen table typing these words to you. My kids are running around the house tearing it apart while on spring break, my dogs are barking outside as they want to be fed, and the morning sunlight is shining its soft rays

through the window onto my keyboard—and I can't help but thank God for saving my life and giving me this bonus round.

It certainly didn’t happen overnight, but I can tell you that I now look at my past, with all of its pain, beauty, and sorrow, with deep gratitude. I thank that young, lost girl I once was for helping me get to this place of peace within my soul that I always hoped was possible. But mostly, I thank all of my past experiences for giving me the gift of compassion— compassion not only for myself, but also for all of the others out there who are lost, who are struggling, and who are exactly like me, just trying to find their way home.

A New Perspective On Self-Care

When you think about self-care, what comes to your mind first? Getting your nails done, taking a lavender-scented bath, or a spa day? What is the next thought that enters? “Oh that would be nice when I have more time, when things slow down with the kids, when work isn’t as busy”?

We've somehow collectively convinced ourselves that self-care is a luxury, something topping off an already jam-packed day of childcare, errands, work, and everything in between.

Every time we feel a tug at the idea of sneaking in that solo workout session or quiet reading time, that little voice in our heads creeps in and whispers, "Shouldn't you be doing something else? Something else that's 'productive'?"

SELF CARE | HEALTH + WELLNESS
50
Photography by: Kristen Hafner

The moment we start to think about taking time for ourselves … “Mom guilt” enters.

Guilt should not have a seat at the self-care table. It's not just a spa day, a new pair of shoes, or half an hour to yourself with a glass of wine (although, hey, I'm not knocking that).

Self-care isn't a day at the Ritz—it's about weaving tiny moments into your day that keep you centered, recharge you for the busy day ahead, and give you a sense of inner peace.

It’s the little things—a walk with a friend or a few minutes to read a book in silence.

I get it. Life is busy, your schedule is demanding, and the responsibilities seem endless. But think about the oxygen mask on the airplane metaphor: You can't help others until you help yourself.

Self-care is  about your impact on the world, which starts with your personal environment, your state of mind.

The beautiful thing about self-care is that it can be tailored to you.

What's your self-care routine? Netflix binges and chatting with your best friend? A nightly skincare regimen that takes you away from everything else? My personal selfcare ritual consists of a nature walk listening to a good podcast or taking the time to enjoy a nourishing meal without distractions. It is anything that allows me to be more present and joyful in my daily life.

There’s no right way to do it. It is simply a means to showing up as the best version of yourself.

“Mom guilt”: It's real and it’s relentless. We feel that we have to put everyone else's needs before our own and believe that any moment spent on us is a moment robbed from someone (or something) that needs us.

But self-care is self-preservation. It's putting a shield around the mental and emotional energy that keeps you and, by extension, your family strong and stable.

The greatest gift we can give those that we love is the version of ourselves that is peaceful, clear headed, and steadfast. By prioritizing self-care, we can show up as our best selves for our loved ones.

The shift I hope every woman can make is learning that self-care is a critical part of our ability to fulfill our duties. It's not about adding a new task to your to-do list; it's about making sure you're on that list—and not way down at the bottom.

Choose self-care for the benefits it brings to your life and the lives of those you love and (maybe more importantly) for the example it sets. By being kind to yourself, you show the world how you expect to be treated.  You learn how to harness your strength and how to find peace amidst the chaos. Grab that shield, moms, and wield it with pride. It’s time to redefine self-care, not as a luxury but as a staple in our daily lives.

THE REMARKABLE RISE OF THE DRIPPING SPRINGS WOMEN’S CLUB

Building Community

LOCALS ONLY | LIFE + CULTURE
ARTICLE BY DRIPPING SPRINGS WOMEN’S CLUB
56
Left: Board President Janice Englehart
Dripping Springs is a very special place and we want every woman who walks through our door to feel welcome and special!

In Dripping Springs, a remarkable social club has grown to almost 300 members, ranging in age from 25 to 90 and embodying the spirit of community, friendship, and volunteerism. The Dripping Springs Women’s Club (DSWC) was founded 17 years ago by women from local civic groups and businesses who came together to share resources and find a way to connect new and long-time residents. No one could have predicted the explosive growth in our community that would reinforce the need for such an organization to help connect women of all ages and stages of life.

DSWC holds luncheon meetings from September through May and offers individual and business memberships. Annual dues help fund scholarships for graduating senior girls in the DSISD who will attend college or trade school. This year the club is proud to offer three $2,000 scholarships.

Each luncheon features a non-profit spotlight and program speaker and averages 175 women in attendance. Board President Janice Englehart notes, “The greatest challenge has been finding a venue with enough capacity.”

The club met for many years at The Terrace Club, where they dined at formal tables with linens and china. When she took over as president four years ago, she felt the need to change direction. “One of the biggest complaints I heard from new members was that the club was cliquish and it was difficult to meet people,” says Englehart.

She felt they had outgrown their space and needed to find a more open venue where the women were encouraged to mix and mingle. She approached

Dripping Springs Distillery, which was opening Distillers Hall, and three years ago a beautiful partnership began. “It was the ideal combination of on-site catering and a large, flexible space that allowed us to offer an affordable luncheon for our growing group.”

DSWC has become known for signature events such as its holiday tea in November, where members decorate the tables and dress up in fascinators. It also features non-profit giving trees and, this year, added a member’s holiday boutique which will likely become another annual tradition. The December meeting is a holiday evening party with spouses invited, and a spring fashion show features local stores and members as models.

To keep members engaged during the COVID shutdowns, Englehart also started a DSWC book club. The book club also struggles to find adequate space and is excited about plans for a new library that includes large meeting rooms for local groups. DSWC has also spawned an active garden club and business networking group for members. A historical club, led by founding Board President Claireen Fellers, hosted a historical walking tour of Mercer Street last spring, followed by a September presentation by some “townies” on the origins of our city. The tour caught the eye of City officials who hope to make it an annual event for residents.

Englehart credits her amazing Board of Directors with helping the organization grow and thrive to meet the needs of our community. “Dripping Springs is a very special place and we want every woman who walks through our door to feel welcome and special!”

DEMAND FOR SURVIVAL SWIM LESSONS IN DRIPPING SPRINGS IS ON THE RISE, YET FEWER CHILDREN ARE LEARNING THESE CRUCIAL SKILLS

My husband and I moved to Dripping Springs in 2016 with two daughters, another on the way, and elaborate plans for a backyard oasis. Knowing that drowning is the number-one cause of death in children under five, I enrolled our youngest in survival swim classes in Austin. The impressive skills she gained were evidence of an unfilled need in our community. Inspired to meet these needs, I now own and operate Dripping Springs Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), teaching babies and toddlers these lifesaving skills.

"May is National Water Safety Awareness Month. Statistically, if a child doesn't make it to kindergarten, the most likely reason is a fatal drowning."
KIDS CORNER | EDUCATION
64

What is ISR?

ISR teaches children ages six months to six years how to get to the safest position in the water: on their back, resting and breathing. Once children can walk, they can learn a sequence of a short swim, rolling on their back to rest and breathe, and then flipping over to swim again. Children learn these skills over six weeks with frequent, one-on-one lessons. ISR graduates become “aquatic problem solvers” so they can save their own lives if they reach the water alone.

What

are the most common misconceptions about ISR lessons?

You have likely seen viral videos where babies are “tossed in the water” and come up floating on their backs. Such skills are not acquired on day one; progression to this level is quite slow, with one skill building on the other with the ultimate goal that the child can survive an aquatic emergency.

Another statement I often hear is, “It is difficult to see my baby cry.” Some children do cry in such an unfamiliar situation. Likewise, many children are also unhappy when required to sit in a car seat. Our job is to keep our children safe from dangers we know they face, even if it is uncomfortable at times.

Why isn't ISR more widely available?

The ISR instructor training program is expensive and time-intensive. Additionally, giving lessons has been challenging due to limited pool options. Unfortunately, due to a lack of education and awareness, many homeowners associations across Texas are shutting down backyard swim lessons. Because I'm passionate about drowning prevention, I've made it my mission to advocate at the state level for change to break down barriers to accessing survival swim lessons in Texas.

Lacie Douthitt

Lacie Douthitt has made answering this question her life’s mission. Her passion for educating women in self-defense was birthed through her own story of surviving domestic abuse. While pregnant and in a toxic relationship, “I hit rock bottom,” Douthitt tearfully reflects. “I lost control of my life and had no community. I was only good at doing what I was told.”

With the help of friends and family, Douthitt broke free from her abuser and took proactive steps to reclaim her voice by learning self-defense martial arts and competitive shooting.

Aiming to break the negative stigma of carrying firearms, Douthitt and her husband partner with Hog Heaven Shooting Club in Dripping Springs to lead guided firearms training courses including pistol marksmanship and concealed carry.

Self-defense is an excellent way to develop leadership skills that translate well to other challenging life situations. Women have an amazing sense of instinct and intuition, which Douthitt teaches women to harness.

Since the average woman is not as strong as the average man, handguns can help level the playing field if a woman must use force to protect herself. According to some studies, firearms are used much more frequently to stop a crime than to commit one.

Now happily married with two children, Douthitt has equipped herself and continues to teach others how to defend and protect effectively.

In addition to leading courses at Hog Heaven, Douthitt teaches weekly women-only self-defense classes as co-owner of Stoic Jiu Jitsu in Dripping Springs.

Churning Up Excitement

AMY'S ICE CREAMS, AN ICONIC WOMAN-OWNED AUSTIN STAPLE, HEADS TO DRIPPING SPRINGS

In the heart of Texas Hill Country, where the cows roam and the wildflowers bloom, a new player is about to shake up the ice cream scene: Amy's Ice Creams. But hold onto your waffle cones, folks, because this isn’t your grandma's ice cream parlor—it's a bold sanctuary of frozen delights.

Leading the charge into this frozen frontier is none other than Amy Miller, a self-proclaimed ice cream aficionado with a penchant for pushing boundaries. With a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology tucked under her belt, Miller could have been dissecting and digging somewhere. But no, she had bigger dreams—dreams drenched in sprinkles and doused in hot fudge.

After a stint at Steve’s Ice Cream, Amy decided to break free from the vanilla norms of corporate life and forge her own path. Thus, Amy’s Ice Creams was born in the quirky streets of Austin back in 1984. And let me tell you, it was (and still is!) a game changer. With flavors so wild they’d make Willy Wonka blush and a commitment to community that would make Mr. Rogers proud, Amy’s became an instant hit.

But Miller wasn't content with just scooping up ice cream. So she donned her boxing gloves (yes, you read that right) and became the first female professional boxer in the Lone Star State. We call that a knockout combo of brains and brawn!

TREND SETTER | FOOD + BEVERAGE
78

Fast forward to today, and Miller’s empire continues to spread. With 18 stores sprinkled across Texas, Amy's is a force to be reckoned with.

And now, drumroll, please … Dripping Springs is about to get a taste of the action. Why Dripping Springs, you ask? Well, why not? With its Hill Country charm and an appetite for adventure as big as the Texas stars and sky, Dripping Springs is the perfect playground for Amy's brand of culinary mischief.

So what can you expect from the grand opening shindig? Oh, just your usual dose of sprinkles and delights. From ribbon-cutting ceremonies to free ice cream bonanzas, merchandise prizes and special offers, Amy's is pulling out all the stops.

“Our grand opening is more than just a celebration; it’s a testament to our commitment to creating unforgettable experiences,” says Miller. “We’re not just serving ice cream; we’re serving up joy and kindness, one scoop at a time.”

So buckle up, buttercups, because Amy's Ice Creams is about to take Dripping Springs by storm. It's going to be a wild ride filled with flavor, flair, and a whole lot of fun. So grab your spoons and get ready to indulge because, in the world of Amy's, every day is a party in a cone (or a cup!).

YOUR HOME harmonizing

BLENDING FEMININE FLAIR INTO YOUR DECOR

Whether you're refreshing a single room or redecorating your entire home, incorporating feminine details can add a soft, refined elegance that invites relaxation and comfort.

Here are some tips to help you infuse your decor with gentle, feminine details.

1. Color Palette: Begin by selecting a color palette that reflects a feminine vibe. Soft pastels like blush pink, lavender, soft yellow, and serene blues bring a calming and soothing atmosphere to any room. These colors can serve as a base for your walls or as accent colors through decor items. If you prefer a more modern look, consider combining these hues with deeper shades like navy or charcoal for a sophisticated contrast.

2. Textures and Fabrics: Layering different textures can add depth and interest to your space. Incorporate plush fabrics like velvet, silk, or faux fur in your throw pillows, curtains, and bedding. These materials not only enhance the room's aesthetic but also invite touch and add an element of luxury and comfort.

3. Floral Elements: Nothing says feminine like floral patterns and fresh flowers. Wallpaper, art prints, or upholstery with floral designs can serve as stunning focal points. A vase of fresh flowers or a potted plant adds life and a touch of nature, promoting a serene and inviting ambiance.

4. Curved Furniture and Decor: Choose furniture and decor pieces with soft, rounded edges to evoke a sense of femininity. Items like a round ottoman, a curvy armchair, or circular mirrors can soften the overall look of your space, making it feel more open and inviting.

By carefully selecting your color palette, textures, and decor items, you can craft a living space that not only looks beautiful but feels deeply personal and inviting.

Incorporating feminine touches into your home decor is about creating a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, and distinctly you. By carefully selecting your color palette, textures, and decor items, you can craft a living space that not only looks beautiful but feels deeply personal and inviting.

FROM FAMILY baking TO COMMUNITY FAVORITE

What intrigued me most about sourdough was diving into a world where science meets art, where every loaf is a potential masterpiece. From nurturing your own wild yeast starter to perfecting that crispy crust and beautiful crumb, sourdough baking is on trend for all the right reasons.

Transitioning from baking for family to launching my CarbQueen micro bakery marked a journey fueled by passion. With my husband Austin’s support, CarbQueen flourished from a dream into a successful small business.

Running a bakery while raising four children presents challenges but also profound fulfillment. My kids learn diligence and perseverance amidst the comforting aroma of fresh bread and cinnamon rolls, and they eagerly assist at the bustling Farmers Market in Dripping Springs every Wednesday.

From porch pick-ups to social media shoutouts and Farmers Market success, Dripping Springs’ tight-knit community propels businesses like mine. It’s more than a place; it’s a familial bond where neighbors become friends and customers turn into advocates. Thank you, Dripping Springs, for embracing my organic, fresh bread every week.
