Reflecting on the Magic of the Season
Kristen Hafner | kristen.hafner@citylifestyle.com
The Christmas season is here and as the spirit of the season is upon us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it’s the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. Growing up in a 1,500-square-foot house as the youngest — with three older sisters — in our family of six, this was always my favorite time of the year. It was likely the most stressful time for our blue-collar family, but as a child I wasn’t aware of what were probably anxious times for my parents. Instead, my memories are filled with love. I’m grateful for those moments, and I hope to keep the tradition of conveying unconditional love within my own family. This month, we wanted to highlight the spirit of the season and what our community has to offer that helps spread the joy and love of our neighbors. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and to support our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace. May we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy and love.

COMING SOON Before Sarah Saxon was a facial plastic surgeon, she was an artist. Having had formal art classes starting at the young age of 7, she knew her talents and aptitude for portrait drawing would one day be incorporated into her professional life in some way. A native of Carthage, Texas, Dr. Saxon went on to Baylor University with a particular interest in transforming her lifelong fascination into surgical expertise. After graduating from Baylor, she spent over a decade in the most rigorous training in facial plastic surgery which included 4 years of medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, 5 years of residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at University of New Mexico, and additional fellowship training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at Boston University under the mentorship of world renowned surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel. In addition, she mastered the nuances of reconstruction of congenital ear anomalies (microtia) with the world expert in the procedure, Dr. Satoru Nagata in Japan. Dr. Saxon then joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas where she taught residents and offered the full spectrum of both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. In 2016, she transitioned into private practice by opening Saxon MD Facial Plastic Surgery in DT Austin, focusing on cosmetic procedures of the face and offering a medspa with injectables and various skin treatments. Several years ago, Dr. Saxon fell in love with Dripping Springs. After moving to the area and seeing a need for her services, Dr. Saxon made it her goal to move her practice to Dripping Springs. We’re thrilled to announce that Saxon MD Facial Plastic Surgery will open in The Offices at Sawyer Ranch, at the corner of 290 and Sawyer Ranch Rd, in January 2024.

Rota ry Club
of Dr ippi ng Spr i ng s Give s Back Service Above Self
ARTICLE BY MICAH WIENER
The Rotary Club of Dripping Springs is a local institution working to help the community. Founded in 2002, the club is a service organization focusing on local and international needs. Local activities include providing annual scholarships for DSHS students, supporting local food banks and other charitable organizations, organizing litter road clean-ups, and more. DSCL spoke with chapter President Greg Hier about Rotary’s mission and outreach.
WHY DID YOU JOIN? I was doing some family genealogy research and was overwhelmed with the amount of coverage my grandmother received. She was actively involved with her church and several non-profits to the point where she was recognized in the local paper almost weekly. I felt like I needed to do more to live up to her standards and honor her memory.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS FOR THE ORGANIZATION ON A LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL? At the local level, while we try to address needs in many areas, our longest-lasting efforts center around supporting our local veterans. Our biggest annual event is the Veterans Day Dinner and Dance in November.
18
M UST SE E | L IFE + CU LTURE
At the international level, Rotary’s primary mission is to eradicate Polio. Locally, we hold Pints for Polio fundraisers at local bars to help with this mission.
HOW DOES THE DS CHAPTER STAND OUT? What I like most about our club is that we’re small but mighty. You can’t hide in the background. Everyone who chooses to join is passionate about helping. Our motto is “Service above self.”
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR OUTREACH TO LOCAL VETERANS. We’re proud to be a founding sponsor of Patriots’ Hall, which directly supports the VFW and American Legion. Patriots’ Hall is building facilities to provide additional support and services to local vets. The Rotary Club of Dripping Springs will provide an outdoor fire pit area for the new building.
WHAT'S NEXT? We’re always trying to grow our membership. The more hands we have, the more we can accomplish. There is no attendance requirement for members, and we always have fun. DrippingSpringsRotary.org

Sausage to Satisfy, Brie to Delight
A Christmas Culinary Adventure Christmas Morning Sausage Breakfast Casserole
This recipe will add so much to your Christmas morning when opening presents and sitting by the fire. Whether you serve it early in the morning or save it for brunch, it’s a crowd-pleaser.
INGREDIENTS:
Casserole: • 6 large local eggs • 1 ½ cups of heavy cream • 1 pound of breakfast sausage • 1 cup of shredded Gruyere cheese • 1 tablespoon of fresh rosemary, chopped fine • 1/3 sweet Texas onion, chopped fine • Cracked salt & pepper to taste • 1 store-bought pie crust or homemade (recipe below) Homemade Pie Crust: • 1 ¼ cups of organic all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons organic sugar • ¼ teaspoon sea salt • 1 stick cold butter • 4 tablespoons cold ice water
INSTRUCTIONS:
Place all ingredients except butter and water in a food processor and pulse a few times. Next, place the butter in the processor and pulse a few times until clumpy. Slowly add the ice water. Ensure the dough sticks together but not too sticky. Transfer dough onto your work surface and place into a ball. Don’t overwork dough (it shouldn’t be perfect). Cover with plastic and store in the refrigerator for 1 to 24 hours (the longer the better). Roll out and place in a 9-inch pie pan. Poke holes at the bottom with a fork. Heat a medium pan with a few drizzles of olive oil or avocado oil. Next, sauté the onions. Optionally, add a teaspoon of butter for more flavor. When the onions become translucent, add the ground breakfast sausage. Cook until crumbled and the sausage is cooked through. Add about a teaspoon each of sea salt and black pepper to taste. Next, add the rosemary and stir it into the meat and onion mixture. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs several times and then add the heavy cream. The more you whisk, the lighter the eggs. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a 9-inch pie pan, place crust. Add the sausage, onions and rosemary. Layer the cheese. Then add the egg and heavy cream over the meat.
Bake for 35 minutes. Cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
Christmas Melted Baked Brie Appetizer
This Christmas appetizer has all the melted cheese and holiday feels. We love to pair this with a white wine or champagne. It’s easy to make yet embodies the essence of Christmas. You don't have to be a professional chef to serve this dish.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 puff pastry sheet (store bought) • ½ cup of homemade cranberry sauce (recipe below) • 8-ounce wheel of brie cheese • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • ½ cup melted butter Homemade Cranberry Sauce: • 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice • 4 to 5 ounces fresh cranberries • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Dash of cinnamon
INSTRUCTIONS:
Heat everything for the cranberry sauce (above) in a small pot. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool before using. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lay puff pastry on a lined baking sheet. Place brie in the center of the pastry. Remove the top of the rind from the brie (you may leave the rind on the bottom). Spread the cranberry sauce on top of the brie. Fold the corners of the puff pastry over the brie. Brush the melted butter mixed with the brown sugar over the top. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until it’s golden brown. Serve with crackers and crusty bread. Cook with love and eat with joy! Chef Marissa Fisk of Marissa Fisk Catering

MISSION TO MAKE THE WORLD A KINDER PLACE ARTICLE BY STACI BRANDONISIO
I am Staci Brandonisio, the current Ms. U.S. for the Woman of Achievement organization. As Ms. U.S., my mission is to share my platform, “The Kindness Effect,” by teaching young children the importance of choosing kindness and how it can make an impact in the lives of others. Currently, one in three students are bullied at school in the United States. “The Kindness Effect” philosophy creates a worldwide domino effect by teaching children (and adults) that one small act of kindness and compassion can change the course of the world. Setting positive examples for kindness and compassion in the community is my goal as Ms. U.S. By speaking in classrooms at elementary schools and with the Girl Scouts, I teach the younger generation the importance of kindness and the lasting effect that bullying can have, ultimately encouraging them to create a better future. Kindness is the bright light for the future! Although I am now a pageant superfan, it wasn’t something I was always interested in. I grew up playing in the dirt of the softball fields and on the volleyball court, and it wasn’t until
adulthood that I competed in my first pageant in 2018. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it turned into one of the biggest blessings. It is a common misconception that pageants are only about the beauty — the glitz and glam of it all — but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In the Woman of Achievement system, the areas of competition are personal interview, talent or speech, platform presentation, fitness, and evening gown. According to the WOA, their mission is to acknowledge the beauty in service, self-development, and education among today’s modern woman through leadership events and pageantry to award women for their life’s work. My favorite event as Ms. U.S. was attending the Walk to End Epilepsy in Washington, D.C., with my family. My daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2021, and it was an honor to be able to represent her and the epilepsy community with my title. Serving as Mrs. Texas and being crowned Ms. U.S. has truly given me a unique opportunity to serve and give back to the community that I will forever be grateful for.

HOLIDAY & HARVEST ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAFNER
A SEASON OF GIVING AND JOY
Known as The Little Longhorn in 2022, owner DJ Smith decided to make a change but not to the business’s commitment to giving back, or its beautiful Christmas trees. After much contemplation and reflection, the name was transformed, and a new chapter was born for Holiday & Harvest. “Our first holiday season was everything we could’ve hoped for. We felt like a holiday town square! It was the perfect combination of Christmas cheer and community in our hometown,” says Smith. “It was also incredibly rewarding to see the community get behind our partnership with Austin Sunshine Camps.” A distinguishing difference of Holiday & Harvest is the source of its trees. Hailing from a family-owned farm in Oregon, the close partnership ensures that customers receive the highest quality and freshest trees, to create the perfect holiday nostalgia that will last well through St. Nick’s arrival. “Opting for a fresh-cut Christmas tree is an environmentally sound choice, and it cultivates an interactive holiday tradition,” says Smith.

Set at the mecca of town, 121 East Mercer Street, the setup is meticulously designed to create a magical atmosphere where families can enjoy the moment and where children can play tag within the pines or pose by Christmas-themed cut-outs, making lasting memories. Aiming to create a business measured not by profits but by smiles, Holiday & Harvest’s goal is to plant a meaningful seed in Dripping Springs and surrounding areas. Each tree purchased translates into a direct donation to Austin Sunshine Camps, which helps fund the magic of an overnight summer camp, free of cost, to at-risk youth in our communities. “Dripping Springs is not just a location choice; it’s our home,” says Smith. With Holiday & Harvest, the season is about nurturing the holiday spirit, creating memorable moments, and giving back to the community. So, this holiday, when you find that perfect tree, know that your choice is adding charm to your home and bringing a little more light to the lives of those in need in our community. “We’re an all-hands-on-deck family.” When the Smiths moved to the one-stoplight town of Dripping Springs in 1986, it was a family affair. Husband and wife Dubb and Judy with their daughters, Paige and Kerbey, fell in love with the characteristics that mark our town: loyalty, community, service and grit. The Smiths started their first business, The Clothes Horse, in the heart of Drip in 1988. These entrepreneurs currently own and operate three businesses contributing to Dripping Springs today: W.F. Smith Company, Pecan Springs Ranch Wedding & Event Venue, and Fitzhugh Brewing.
The Smiths opened Pecan Springs Ranch in 2012 and their growth exploded. “There are a lot of emotions on wedding days,” Paige explains. “We expect the unexpected and do whatever it takes to tackle any curveballs thrown in the way of your best day.” “You can find my dad doing septic work to rewiring electricity; no job is too small. My children will often join the crew clearing tables after an event. Everyone works together and that’s the way it’s always been,” Paige shares. “My parents are excellent role models and leaders. It’s trickled down generationally to us and my children. Family is our why.”
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABIGAIL THOMSEN
“We drop everything to show up for those in need because we know from growing up in a smaller community that people matter. We are loyal to a fault.” The Smiths are also the first to step in on people’s worst days. They support families grieving tragic loss, charity fundraisers and more with their venue. “We drop everything to show up for those in need because we know from growing up in a smaller community that people matter. We are loyal to a fault.” In the midst of Covid in 2020, the family opened Fitzhugh Brewing. Inspired by Magnolia in Waco, Kerbey led the project. “Dripping is a family community. Fitzhugh Brewing fills a gap with a safe place for kids to play and an aesthetically pleasing location to enjoy amazing beer and delicious food,” Paige adds. “We are unified and committed to keeping this culture of everyone supporting everyone, and passing this legacy to the next generation in Dripping Springs.” PecanSpringsRanch.com | FitzhughBrewing.com

DRIPPING SPRINGS COMMUNITY LIBRARY PROMOTES LIFELONG LEARNING Designs in progress
NEW FACILITY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT TO GO BEYOND BOOKS AND BUILD COMMUNITY
The Dripping Springs Community Library (DSCL) stands as a cherished community hub where individuals gather to connect, collaborate and share knowledge. This thriving institution has evolved from its modest beginnings in 1985, when it operated out of a single classroom at Dripping Springs High School. It has since become an indispensable resource for more than 52,000 local residents today. Over the past year alone, DSCL recorded nearly 80,000 visits and holds a vast collection of more than 72,000 resources, spanning both print and digital mediums. DSCL goes beyond book lending, offering an array of programs and services designed to foster lifelong learning, including book clubs, educational workshops and literacy programs. Moreover, it provides access to vital technology resources, such as free computer and

Wi-Fi access, essential for learning and skill development. However, the library is currently facing space constraints, making it unable to accommodate the needs of this rapidly growing community. “To address these challenges, the library has initiated a fundraising campaign to build a new facility that will serve as a gathering space for our community,” says DSCL Board President Missy Atwood. This future library promises to be a dynamic space, featuring a dedicated children’s floor, community study and meeting rooms, expansive outdoor event areas, and a children’s outdoor play space. It will be situated adjacent to the current property at the end of Benney Lane by the high school. “This is our opportunity to provide a strong foundation of education and innovation for Dripping Springs. You can support our community by empowering the library to do what it does best: be a hub for ideation, connection and innovation.” The “Beyond Books, Building Community” campaign aims to raise $5 million by the end of 2024—an amount crucial to securing a library capable of meeting the diverse and growing needs of the community. DSCL operates as one of only 15 independent library districts in Texas, distinguishing it from typical library systems funded through property taxes or municipal budgets. Instead, residents of Dripping Springs voted to fund the library’s operational expenses with 0.25% of the sales tax revenue generated within the borders of the library district. The library is governed by a board of five elected officials, ensuring its autonomy from the city. In a community characterized by rapid expansion, the need for connection and engagement is paramount. “This building cannot happen without community support,” says Capital Campaign Manager Sarah Rose. Projections show that sales tax revenue in the district is expected to double by 2033. By that year, this revenue is anticipated to fully cover the library’s operating expenses, along with an annual building loan payment. When raised, the $5 million dollars will bridge the gap in sales tax revenue and set the library up for success. “This is our opportunity to provide a strong foundation of education and innovation for Dripping Springs,” says Sarah. “You can support our community by empowering the library to do what it does best: be a hub for ideation, connection and innovation.” Susan Richardson, a longtime resident of Dripping Springs and library donor, emphasizes the library’s contributions to our community. “To me, a library is a major foundation of a community. Our library plays a vital role in supporting education, literacy, community building, local businesses and cultural preservation. It is an essential institution that serves as an invaluable resource for our entire community.” Visit the library’s website to explore ways to donate or get involved in the campaign. Together, the community can help DSCL continue to thrive and evolve as a beacon of knowledge and connection in Dripping Springs. DSCL.org/Future | @mydscl

UNLOCKING THE SPIRIT OF GIVING a federal income tax deduction for charitable donations made to qualified organizations. Your tax professional can help you itemize your deductions and estimate how much you can deduct, so keep your receipts. 5. In response to appeals for donations. Many nonprofits market their end-of-year giving campaigns over the holidays, which prompts individuals to act. You may have seen Santa outside the grocery store ringing a bell more than once!

CREATIVE WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE It’s the Season of Giving! Thirty percent of annual giving to nonprofits occurs in the month of December, with ten percent occurring during the last three days of the month.
WHY IS END-OF-YEAR GIVING SO POPULAR? 1. Improves feelings of self-worth and gratitude. People feel good when they give—especially during the season of spending money on holiday parties, travel and presents under the tree. 2. You become part of the solution. Donors often find themselves reflecting on the past year and where they are in life, setting goals and resolutions for the New Year. Many times, this includes a desire to give back to the community or a cause they care about. 3. Year-End Bonuses. Many individuals receive a year-end bonus or profit-sharing distribution at work and decide to donate a percentage to their favorite charity or religious organization. 4. Tax benefits. Donors seize the end of the year as an opportunity to make charitable contributions that they can claim on their tax returns, as well as make gifts to loved ones that qualify for the annual gift tax exclusion. You can claim
1. Consider setting up an automatic, smaller recurring donation to a cause that’s close to your heart. You won’t notice the amount taken out of your account each month but will sleep soundly knowing that you’re doing something good. No amount is too small to make a difference. 2. Donate your time. Set aside an afternoon to help at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Animal shelter and rescue organizations are always looking for extra volunteers. Nursing home residents enjoy visits from people in the community; conversing one-on-one can be a blessing to others. 3. Donate blood, plasma, platelets, or your hair. The Red Cross frequently holds blood drives as do local centers such as The Blood Center of Central Texas or We Are Blood. Locks of Love, Wigs for Kids, and Hair We Share are a few of the many organizations that will accept human hair to make wigs for those with medical hair loss. 4. Adopt a family for Christmas, and take over the gift-giving for a family or child in need. This is a great way to get your children invested in the spirit of giving. I have each of my children pick a child and together we shop for that child. They are just as excited putting together a package for their “adopted” child as they are opening the gifts they receive. For more legal guidance visit NanceLegal.com. Sharing the Gift of Health and Longevity ARTICLE BY DR. JON EBERLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER
The holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and togetherness. It’s a time when we exchange gifts to express our love and appreciation for our friends and family. While the typical gift-giving of material things is a cherished tradition during this time of year, it’s also essential to remember the gift of health and longevity to ourselves and our loved ones. If you don’t regularly spend time focused on your own health, consider giving the gift everyone really wants — a healthy you. Exercise regularly - Many people think exercise is out of reach because they are in pain, don’t have time, are busy with kids, or can’t make it to the gym. But we all have enough time to move our bodies sufficiently throughout the day. When you typically sit, opt to stand. Choose the stairs over the elevator. Do a wall sit while you’re on a phone call. Do a plank while you’re trying to figure out a complex problem. When in doubt … move your body. And even better, move with someone else to encourage them at the same time! Reduce stress - I often get a response to this suggestion like “if only” or “tell that to my kids.” I get it. Most of us make sacrifices all day long and life inevitably presents challenges. We get to choose how we orient ourselves to them. I like to do a simple mindset shift to being grateful
for the challenges instead of resenting them. And hey, look at you right now. You’re reading this wonderful magazine and taking time to breathe. That’s great! Be present - In today’s world we are loaded with distractions. We have supercomputers in our pockets that constantly beckon to us. The compulsion of productivity, entertainment, responsiveness, can all lead us to ignore what’s right in front of us. Being present is a gift for those that long for our attention. It’s also great for your own health. Countless studies show living in the now (not the past or future) leads to a vast number of improved health markers. Treat yourself - The demands of the holidays can take a toll on us. It’s easy to overlook the aches and pains to “get through the holidays.” Another option is to treat yourself to self-care. This can be getting in to see a great chiropractor, getting a massage, joining a Pilates class, picking up a new sport, or just getting into nature. Make self-care a priority and know that taking care of yourself is a gift to others. You deserve it, and so do those who care about you. For additional ideas on how to give the gift of health and longevity, find us at PrecisionChiropracticATX.com.

The Art of Gift Wrapping 3 ESSENTIAL TOPICS
ARTICLE BY DANYALE KEIM PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER
Gift-giving is a timeless tradition — truly a love language between humans. A beautifully wrapped gift carries the giver’s personal style into the hands of the recipient, who in turn can feel positively giddy with anticipation just at the sight of a present meant for them.
1. GIFT WRAP IS MORE THAN JUST PAPER A BEAUTIFULLY WRAPPED GIFT STARTS WITH THE RIGHT WRAPPING PAPER. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO CONSIDER: • Start with the occasion For birthdays, you can opt for vibrant and fun patterns, while elegant, neutral colors work well for more formal events. • Will this tear at the wrong moment? Good wrapping paper doesn’t rip too easily. Thicker paper is more durable, holds a fold, and feels luxurious. • Visual harmony Think about the overall color scheme — can you coordinate the wrapping paper with the recipient’s favorite colors, a personal story, or a theme?
50
H OW TO | L IFE + CU LTU R E
2. TECHNIQUES FOR WRAPPING ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR WRAPPING PAPER, IT’S TIME TO WRAP YOUR GIFT WITH FINESSE. • Measure twice. Cut once. Ensure you have enough paper to cover the gift completely. Measure the paper by placing the gift diagonally on it, with excess paper on each side. Cut the paper, leaving a bit extra for overlap. • Nice folds. Straight seams. Fold the paper over the gift, creating clean edges and tight corners. Use double-sided tape or clear tape on the underside to secure the seams without showing.
3. EMBELLISHMENTS RIBBONS AND BOWS, FLOWERS, TRINKETS, OR SPRIGS OF GREENERY WILL ENHANCE THE PRESENTATION. EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT STYLES, LIKE CLASSIC BOWS, RIBBON CASCADES, OR EVEN ORIGAMI FLOWERS, TO PERSONALIZE YOUR GIFT. • The tag Create custom gift tags with the recipient’s name or a special message. This adds a personal touch and makes your gift unique. • Try fabric wraps Use fabric pieces, scarves or handkerchiefs to wrap gifts in an eco-friendly and reusable way. Knot the fabric for an artistic finish. Gift wrapping is an art that allows you to express your love and appreciation for someone. A few extra minutes of care can turn a simple gift into a cherished memory. Happy wrapping! Follow Danyale for more holiday tips and design inspiration at @danyalekeimdesign.

GI V ING B ACK T O YO U R DR E A MS A JUMPSTA RT ON 2024 RE SOLUTION S
“Start exercising. Stop smoking. Stress less. Save more.” It is not too early to start planning a New Year’s resolution. Whether you're the avid list-maker with big plans for January 1 or the skeptical observer of resolutions that often fizzle out, it's time to consider a fresh approach for a truly remarkable 2024. Resolutions are defined as a firm commitment to do or not to do something. Unfortunately, for many, New Year's resolutions have become casual commitments to change or quit a habit. However, your resolutions can be a pathway to unlocking your true potential. By aligning your resolutions with your passions and wildest dreams, you can elevate your quality of life, amplify your impact, and boost your happiness. In the time it takes to scroll social media or find your next Netflix binge, you can craft a resolution plan to make 2024 not just “better than last year” but “absolutely extraordinary.”
DREAM BIG Begin by raising your ambition. Rather than revisiting the same old changes, consider the dreams buried within your heart. Eliminate self-imposed boundaries on what’s possible and envision who you want to become. Do you seek more energy, deeper connections, or greater zest for life? Take a few minutes to pour your heart out and journal. Explore what your soul craves, identify what you can leave behind in 2023, and where you can double down in 2024.
BE SPECIFIC Now that you’ve expanded your horizons, create a detailed vision. This planning phase may take some time, but it’s worth it. Identify what you want to create, learn or achieve. Resolutions aren't solely about personal milestones; they can be about making an impact, forging connections, and making a difference. Set clear goals and outcomes that define your mission for the year ahead.
TAKE SMALL STEPS
ARTICLE BY MELANIE SOMMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER
Remembering your ultimate goal (your “why”) will keep you on track, even on those days when motivation wanes. Stay disciplined and consistent to develop new habits that are on track with where you're headed. Write down your resolution in mission form, and read it every morning before diving into your day. Visualize the next 24 hours and act on a task that advances your mission. Every small decision and action contributes to substantial change. Don't give up even when you falter — shake it off and keep going. I believe in you, and I'm cheering you on as you embark on this transformative journey. Your resolutions are more than mere promises; they're the path to realizing your dreams and becoming your best self. Start planning now to make 2024 an extraordinary year.

the gift of endorphins The Stress-Relief Benefits of Staying Active
ARTICLE BY ANGIE LYNGSO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER This time of year, stress combined with schedules and commitments outside of the norm can most certainly result in a lack of time. It seems like the easiest choice would be to skip workouts and start back up in the new year when things slow down a bit. In truth what I and those I coach have found is that skipping movement or exercise during the holiday season results in more stress because we stop caring for ourselves.
A FEW FACT-DRIVEN REASONS WHY WE SHOULDN’T SKIP THE HOLIDAY SEASON WORKOUT: Release of Endorphins: Physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Endorphins act as natural painkillers and mood regulators, contributing to a sense of well-being and reduced stress.
Stress Relief Through Distraction: Engaging in physical activity provides an opportunity to shift focus away from stressors and onto the activity at hand. This temporary distraction can lead to a reduction in stress-related thoughts. Reduced Cortisol Levels: Exercise can help lower the production of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels are associated with increased stress, and regular exercise can help regulate and reduce these levels. One of my favorite ways to squeeze in a no-excuses workout is to do push-ups or squats between wrapping presents or baking cookies! Set an attainable, small goal. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Just move! Your body, and your family, will thank you. For more coaching tips, visit LyngsoFit.com.

LOGAN PAPP A RISING STAR IN THE WORLD OF COUNTRY MUSIC
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER
58
B ACK STAGE | EN TERTA INME NT
Not many teens can say they have hung out in honky-tonks and performed in front of sell-out crowds. But for Logan Papp, a 15-year-old Dripping Springs High School sophomore, that has become the norm. Growing up as the third of four boys, Logan and the Papp family planted roots in Dripping Springs when he was just 3 years old. Coming from Houston, it was here in Dripping that he embarked on his musical journey at a young age. The Papp family has always been musically inclined, each brother with a gift. A sparked interest in the fiddle from the youngest Papp brother, Colton, is what inspired Logan to try the guitar at age 8, landing the family at Hudson’s on Mercer. When the pandemic halted his lessons, it didn’t deter young Papp. Logan essentially taught himself and began writing his own music. At age 9, Logan wrote his first song about living in Texas. Chad Hudson, seeing such great talent in young Papp, and after seeing him perform at Founders, shared a video of Logan playing “Pound Sign” at just 9 years old with country music star and friend, Kevin Fowler. This ultimately led to Papp playing with Fowler at Fowler’s birthday party in 2017. Hudson’s on Mercer quickly became Logan’s musical playground as his passion began to grow. Another pivotal moment for Papp came at 11 years old; his instructor couldn’t make it to a show and sent Logan in his place to perform at the 7A Ranch in Wimberley. This momentous experience marked the true beginning of his journey as a performer.

His talent and hard work continue to turn heads. Logan was nominated for Young Artist of the Year at the Texas Country Music Awards (TCMAs) held at Billy Bob’s and had the opportunity to open for Stoney LaRue this past September. Drawing from a diverse range of genres, finding creativity in rock, Michael Jackson, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and classics like “Paint it Black,” Papp shows little favoritism in his listening. But when it comes to playing, it’s country music that flows in his veins, and it’s what he loves to perform. His performances reflect his character: a humble guy, a light-hearted jokester, with a heart of gold. Papp captivates his audiences with his authentic and raw talent. Taking requests and engaging with the crowd to give everyone the feeling that they are family. The songwriting process comes naturally to Logan, as he catches a tune in his head and jots it down on the Notes app on his phone. It all starts with a melody, and the words follow suit. His creative process is a reflection of Logan’s natural gift.

B ACK STAGE | EN TERTA INME NT
As a young artist, Logan faces unique challenges, with school being a significant one. An exemplary student who is also involved in football, wrestling, and FFA, his love for music makes the balancing act hard at times. Another challenge being that the music industry is teeming with young talent made more visible through the lens of social media. Yet, Logan’s commitment to authenticity and staying true to his musical roots sets him apart. Although it may seem to be, it’s not a oneman show. Papps’s journey is a family affair, brimming with support. His dad plays the role of equipment manager, his mom takes care of the social side, and his brothers are his biggest fans. They provide the honesty and encouragement needed to keep him grounded and level-headed. Logan’s ultimate goal is twofold. As a kid, he aspires to graduate. As an artist, his dream is to release an EP, a significant milestone for any musician. When asked if there’s anyone he’d like to thank, Logan expresses his gratitude to his family, Hudson’s, Braydon Zink, Clint Holtzendorf, and Madison Rodges. Bart Roy Burke from Bart Roy Productions gave him the Stoney LaRue gig and Brad Thomas, the Founders Day commissioner, who booked him on the main stage. In a world where young artists are on the rise, Logan Papp stands out not just for his musical gifts but for his dedication to staying true to himself. With passion, authenticity, and unwavering support from loved ones, there is no doubt we will be seeing him on the big stage for a long time to come.

FUSE Redefining Office Space ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAFNER In a bustling world of entrepreneurship and innovation, the need for flexible office spaces that go beyond four walls and a desk has never been more evident. Enter FUSE, a revolutionary concept that’s breathing new life into the workspace landscape, offering far more than just a place to work. FUSE’s mission is clear: to be the ultimate launchpad for businesses, the community and the world. Founders John Herring and Mike Daugherty found common ground in their faith. John had devoted himself to full-time ministry, while Mike was the CEO of a hotel development company. Their bond grew strong
while attending Bible study, and they shared a passion for helping others through nonprofit work. For the duo, nonprofits were more than just organizations; they were a way to serve people both locally and globally. Understanding the importance of giving back to the community and the world, the business partners’ shared belief led them to incorporate a “give-back component” into their budding business idea. In May of 2018, the first FUSE opened its doors with a simple yet powerful mission: We exist to “do more” for our members. CONTINUED >

“Connect a need with an opportunity to give back and tie it to an easy method” is Herring and Daugherty’s mission.
More than just a stunning building off 290 close to Sawyer Ranch Road in Dripping Springs, FUSE offers cozy coworking spaces, meeting rooms, event spaces and virtual memberships, as well as private office spaces that you can customize to make feel like your home away from home. Knowledgeable staff is on hand to make things run seamlessly. Their awe-inspiring communal areas make it easy to mingle or network when you need a break, and we can’t fail to mention the coffee maker that rivals a Starbucks barista. Not merely a place of business, FUSE’s commitment to supporting nonprofit organizations continues to grow. At every grand opening, they partner with two nonprofits, one local and one global, providing not only financial assistance but also valuable publicity to help these organizations gain the recognition they deserve in the community. FUSE also maintains an ongoing education and health sponsorship of a Ugandan child and builds fresh-water wells in underserved communities. Their dedication to giving back extends beyond grand openings. On a quarterly basis, they select a local nonprofit to support, fostering an ongoing ministry that

encourages their members to embrace the spirit of giving. To further support their mission, FUSE introduced the DO MORE® nonprofit program. This program offers free and discounted services to nonprofit organizations, ensuring they have the resources needed to continue their vital work. “Connect a need with an opportunity to give back and tie it to an easy method” is Herring and Daugherty’s mission. Making it simple for people to contribute to causes that matter to them. Whether it is sponsoring a child, supporting local initiatives, or making a global impact, FUSE aims to be a platform for positive change. FUSE stands as a testament to the strength of like-minded individuals working together to create a lasting impact. Their commitment to the simplicity of giving back, whether on a local or global scale, offers their members a special chance to participate in something larger than themselves. Learn more about the DO MORE® initiative at FUSEWorkspace.com or stop in for a tour at 13341 US-290, Dripping Springs. FUSE also operates locations in Bee Cave, Four Points and Houston-CityCentre.

Mom of three, Chandler Borchardt grew up on a ranch just outside of Dripping Springs. Spending much of her childhood outdoors and riding horses, her work ethic has always been one to admire. In 2017, while pregnant with her first child, Borchardt opened her salon in a shared space in Dripping. Her initial vision was to use her talents as a stylist to not only beautify the town but also to support women in need, specifically the local women served by the Heart of Texas Pregnancy Resource Center. At the time Borchardt, was in an abusive relationship herself and could not fulfill her vision. After breaking free, she began her healing journey, trusting that everything happens in God’s timing. With ever-growing dreams and in need of a bigger space, Borchardt planned to open a salon in Blanco. A profound shift in perspective occurred following a calling from God. She recognized that her true mission was to support women in Dripping Springs. In need of expansion, her current space would not work. Once again feeling led by the Lord, Borchardt shared her mission with the landlords. As deeply spiritual individuals as well, they understood her goals and supported her expansion. Within a month, the expansion renovations were complete, and the dream of providing a safe space for women to feel beautiful and worthy became a reality. Thus, Greater Beauty Outreach was born. To get involved, donate, or find more information, invitations are available at the Heart of Texas Pregnancy Center and local food pantries, spreading the message that every woman deserves to feel their best and know they are worthy of more. For more about Chandler’s mission and where you can visit her salon, find her on Instagram at @itschandlerbo.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 80
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
