Karen Rivera | karen.rivera@citylifestyle.com

Happy November Dripping Springs City Lifestyle family, and welcome to our Thankful issue. I have sat in reflection over my letter this month, stressing over how it would be possible to even convey the gratitude we are feeling toward this community and the way you have welcomed this publication. Thankful is indeed the word. In my personal life, I am thankful for a safe, thriving community to live in; healthy children; my husband who works harder than we deserve; family who live close enough to pop in on a whim; and friends who are ever supportive and encouraging even though my life these days is a whirlwind. Speaking of said whirlwind, with each passing day working for this publication I can truly say, this has been an unexpected gift. In the four short months we have been producing Dripping Springs City Lifestyle our eyes have been opened to countless members of our community making huge impacts. I am thankful for this avenue to bring you those stories so that they may inspire you. This issue brings you a visit to a nonprofit women’s organization helping new mothers; a local jewelry maker and longtime Dripping resident; a professional production studio in our own backyard producing a charming children’s show; a professional chef with charcuterie ingredient musthaves; a luxury interior designer with tips from the top; and more. These people and stories are the all-encompassing reasons to be thankful for this amazing town. We are a perfect mix-match of gifts and talent that represents Dripping Springs. Flip these pages, and be enlightened and inspired! Do you have a story that needs to be shared, a local business that deserves to be highlighted? We would love to hear from you. After all, this publication is inspired by you! Let us know by contacting us via Instagram; scan the QR below. Thanks for reading, and we will see you around town!

autumn table

setting Make your guests feel at home with these simple staples

While food typically steals the show at holiday gatherings, table settings can be just as important to create a beautiful background for the delicious meal. Natural elements, such as pinecones, leaves, or greenery, create a simple yet aesthetically pleasing table setting. Tea-light candles add warmth, creating a memorable atmosphere where your guests feel at ease. The secret to creating a full, finished table? Layers. Layer the charger, dinner plate, salad plate, and add a creative topper, such as a napkin holder or name card. This is a simple way to add visual depth and bring the table to life. Enjoy!

Owner, Jamie, in the storage room, where it all began.

CREATING JEWELRY TO BE WORN EVERY DAY, EVERYWHERE YOU GO

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER

As we enter a charming jewelry boutique just northeast of Dripping, a tiny pup runs past our feet and a few customers shuffle around, browsing and chatting. Up walks a woman, donning jeans and worn-in Birkenstocks with beautiful accessories to accompany them. It’s Jamie Pope, the owner and designer of Liz James Designs, who greets us with a huge smile, as if we were long-lost friends. Years ago when Jamie was working as a dental hygienist, a recurring patient often prodded her with the question “When are you going to follow your dreams of making and selling your own jewelry?” That question is ultimately what pushed Jamie to open her company. Over twelve years ago, Jamie began Liz James Designs in one room, using what is now her storage closet to launch her business. She has since taken over most of the building. “As a girl, I was shaped and influenced by my mother, sculptor and painter Rosie Sandifer, and her artistic talents and tenacious work ethic. Seeing her work around the world inspired me to explore the possibilities of my own natural talents. I am so humbled and grateful to see the same wonderful reactions to my designs be reminiscent to those my mother saw from her work,” says Jamie. Sketching, building vision boards, try-ons, editing designs, and tweaking sizes are all done in-house, which is unique in the jewelry industry. “When we say ‘made by hand,’ we mean it,” she notes. Every piece of jewelry is handmade in studio by Jamie’s team and herself. They pride themselves in persevering until each piece is created to its very best.

“We want you to revel in the simple, easy grace of our pieces that flow with the momentum of life.” Who is Liz James? “My middle name is Elizabeth and James is my childhood nickname. It simply made sense.” Jamie, her husband, Vick, and two sons have been Dripping residents since 2004; they have seen the town evolve. They continue to love the laid-back atmosphere and active lifestyle that Dripping Springs has to offer. Jamie shared with me the best kept secret in Dripping. “There is a hidden gem behind the Shell on 290, close to Mercer. They have the BEST fried chicken. You just go around back and there is a window to order!” We all cracked up because this was news to us. Sure enough, Krispy Krunchy Chicken is located behind the Shell gas station. The secret is out! With the holidays approaching, I asked Jamie what makes the season special for her. “One of my favorite traditions is opening the store on Christmas Eve as a family. Admittedly, my family was not initially a fan of this, but through the years, it has become a special tradition. Vick makes Bloody Marys, and the store becomes filled with friends and last-minute shoppers.” Whether you are attending a ball game or gala, Liz James Designs are the perfect pieces to adorn you. Jamie draws inspiration from women she meets, and she loves when people stop by the shop to visit.

A MILLION DECISIONS, SIMPLIFIED Reasons to Hire an Interior Designer Being a small-town girl from West Texas, I was born and raised in the construction world. My grandfather built homes. My parents and brother are builders and developers in San Angelo, Texas. It is the bubble I know and love, my happy place outside of my family. I love being part of creating a structure that starts in someone’s mind, goes from idea to paper, and from blueprints to a livable masterpiece. A home is a work of art, a collaborative creation that makes a person and their family so incredibly happy. I have been a professional interior designer for 16 years. Before that, I helped my mom design homes she

and my dad built. I have been fortunate to design homes, a hospital, hotels, and office spaces and am blessed to have teams of builders, contractors, developers, and other designers to call my friends. Most importantly, I am a wife to my husband, Ryan, and a mom to four beautiful kiddos. Our family has lived in Dripping Springs for eight years, and we absolutely love calling it our home. We spend our days driving up and down 290 between football, volleyball, birthday parties, and family get-togethers and wouldn’t have it any other way.

REA SONS TO HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER CREATE MORE FUNCTIONAL SPACES. There is never a wrong time to get an interior designer involved in your project, but I like to start at the very beginning. We see your home with both a functional perspective and a creative eye. From ideal furniture placement to accessible outlet location and more, we want you to be able to use your home in a beautiful yet effortless way.

STAYING ON BUDGET. Staying on budget is probably the most stressful part of building or renovating a home. A designer can help achieve a custom look while staying on track monetarily. We are well versed in how to mix a little “Neiman’s” with a little “Target.” Hiring your designer early will also help eliminate change orders and set realistic design allowances.

SEEING THE BIG PICTURE. Part of an interior designer’s skillset is seeing the picture before it is painted. Our job is to create a masterpiece by absorbing the clients’ ideas. Working with a designer allows you to see your vision presented in its entirety before making a decision.

THE "WOW!" FACTOR. Set your home apart from the rest. There’s nothing better than walking into a space and thinking, “This is for you, my client, and no one else has it.” With a designer, who can elevate your space by adding a fun pop of color, wallpaper, or unique lighting, you get a custom style. We want your home to reflect who you are, who your family is, what you love, and what makes you happy. For me, the greatest feeling is when a client says “You just get me! Thank you for listening.” NOVEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/D RI P PI N G S P R I N G S

“Looking back, I am so thankful for this community and the local coffee shop Mazama. We have met so many people that have both helped and supported our family dream. We know we are home.” — Nick Caster

Nick and Christina Caster first met through a matchmaking scheme arranged by their mothers. Christina’s worship band was looking for a keyboard player, so Christina’s mother talked to Nick’s mother, and suddenly Nick was in the band! “It was a rock ’n’ roll match made in heaven,” as Nick would describe it. At that point in his life, Nick spent his time pursuing music and investing in a newfound love for creating travel videos made from family vacations. Christina was seriously considering a career in musical theater since she spent most of her childhood on the stage. It’s safe to say that the arts run deep in these two. When Nick and Christina tied the knot, it was no surprise that a truly special idea sparked. But the idea was put on the shelf because the timing wasn’t right. Nick founded Caster Studios with his brother, Justin, in San Diego, CA, back in 2007. It was a humble beginning as they worked out of their parent’s garage with a desk quaintly placed next to the washer and dryer. Christina was busy traveling with a children’s musical entertainment group. Over the course of four years, the group performed at numerous venues and U.S. military bases both here in the states and overseas. The production was also made into a DVD series for kids. Caster Studios began to produce promo videos for both corporate and nonprofit companies along with music videos for bands like O-TOWN, Carrie Underwood, Midland, and George Strait. The time came for Caster to begin developing an original project of their own. Nick and Christina dusted off their idea that was placed on the shelf years before and presented it to Justin. The wheels started turning. Together, they began developing the characters, test shooting concepts and fleshing out script ideas. “We wanted to create a show the whole family can trust and enjoy while respecting the mind of a child,” said Christina. The ideas continued to grow and so did Nick and

Christina’s family. They had a plan to homeschool their children and were hoping to find a nest with a little more land. This brought them out to Dripping Springs, TX, in 2016. “Looking back, I am so thankful for this community and the local coffee shop Mazama. We have met so many people that have both helped and supported our family dream. We know we are home,” said Nick. Caster Studios also found a home in Dripping Springs. Just down Sports Park Road, in the heart of the city, lies the Caster Studios sound stage. Justin was splitting his time between Austin and Los Angeles as he was pursuing his acting career. In 2020, he decided to officially move to Austin to join his family. It was now time to bring Gus Plus Us to life. “We truly believed the show would work, but we didn’t have the resources or manpower needed to execute it in the way it deserved. In 2020, everything came together and we knew it was time,” said Justin Ray. Gus Plus Us was created to be meaningful but simple with the purpose of bringing joy to the entire family. Each episode of Season 01 resembles a life-size pop-up book, and all the sets and props were made from familiar handcrafted materials. In this show, you will meet an endearing creature named Gus as he invites you to embark on melodious adventures fueled by curiosity and discovery along with his faithful zany sidekick, Karrot, and whimsical mentor, Lucy. Gus Plus Us is an engaging, humorous, and exciting new series for the whole family. “This is a show made by a family for families. I really think we made something special and I hope it brings families joy when they watch it,” said Christina. Cool Fact: Season 01 of Gus Plus Us is officially out and able to stream through a kid-safe streaming app called KidoodleTV or through Amazon Prime Video.

Both Nick and Justin are so thankful for the new members of the Caster Studios team. Dallas Morgan first worked with the brothers when they hired him to be the producer of Gus Plus Us. They liked him so much they didn’t want him to leave. He is now the Executive Producer for Caster Studios and Head of Distribution. Noah Green spent three summers interning for Caster. It didn’t take long for Nick and Justin to see that he would make an invaluable member of the team. Noah is now the Media Manager and works in multiple stages of post-production. As season one of Gus Plus Us entered post-production, Caster was looking to expand their reach. This is when Christina Rodriguez joined the team to head up their Marketing and Social Media Management. They are so happy to have her on board. Caster Studios started as a boutique film company for music videos and commercials and has grown into a full-fledged entertainment film studio. They have turned their focus toward developing, producing, and distributing premium film and television projects. Caster Studios will continue to grow but will strive to always keep its humble family values intact. Caster Studios is only getting started and is thankful to be living out their dream in a welcoming community like Dripping Springs. "WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR THE COMMUNITY OF DRIPPING SPRINGS. THEY HAVE GATHERED AROUND US WITH SUPPORT SINCE WE OPENED OUR DOORS AND WE ARE JUST SO THANKFUL." -DEBI WEHMEIER

In 2012, when Debi Wehmeier opened the doors of the Pregnancy Resource Center in East Austin, her main goal was simple: to provide struggling mothers and their families with unconditional love, compassion and hope when they needed it most. Now ten years later, with locations both in East Austin and Dripping Springs, her passion to help women throughout their pregnancies has evolved and expanded to providing confidential pregnancy tests, sonograms, parenting and birth classes, options counseling, and support groups. About half of the pregnancies in the U.S. each year are unplanned. Debi and her team recognize pregnancy and parenthood are not always the easiest path. Supporting parents is half of the battle - meeting their physical needs is where they shine. Through donations and community volunteers, they are not only able to provide their services at no cost to the families but also supply a boutique free of charge to all families in their care. Mothers can browse racks filled with maternity and kid’s clothing, shoes, toys, formula, baby gear and diapers. As their babies grow, their needs change as well and the Pregnancy Resource Center is there every step of the way, supporting the families until their kids are four years old. Debi has a passion for helping women and inspiring them to be the best they can be. With a heart of compassion, she strives to build

relationships with each family that walks through her doors, ensuring they feel seen and loved far longer than her services are required. “This is a no-judgment zone – just love,” Wehmeier emphasizes. “We are going to walk mothers through this, and they will leave here with HOPE.” With their steadfast team and the help of local volunteers, the resource center not only survived the pandemic but thrived. April Sorenson, a volunteer at the Dripping Springs location, credits the center’s success with its open-door policy. “I’m thankful that HTPRC extends open arms and hearts to all women, and instills hope where there is such a great need for it,” she adds. There are countless volunteers just like April that support the PRC. If you feel inclined, they always need and accept donations. Additionally, they are seeking bilingual sonographers. For more information, you can visit their website at heartoftexasprc.org or email info@heart prchc.org. You’ve heard the saying, “It takes a village.” We are so thankful the Pregnancy Resource Center is in ours! The HTPRC new location is located at 27722 RM12 in Dripping. Driftwood Horse Rescue and Sanctuary Camille Carson

Giving horses and humans a solid foundation of trust, connection, and peace ARTICLE BY NICOLE BURNS ASCUE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FOTOHOGG PHOTOGRAPHY

“The first thing we do is just teach them how to be horses again.” —Camille Carson, founder of Driftwood Horse Rescue and Sanctuary Down a peaceful Hill Country road lies Driftwood Horse Rescue and Sanctuary, founded by Camille Carson and her husband, Jess Carson, a member of the award-winning country band Midland. Celebrating its one-year anniversary this fall, the organization saves horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect. While their team rescues primarily Arabian and part-Arabian horses, they take in everything from quarter horses and mustangs to a Paso Fino and a Rocky Mountain horse. The organization currently operates out of three locations in the area, has more than 30 horses in its care, and operates with the help of a small crew of volunteers under the skilled hand of Executive Director Timea Chemez, who in Camille’s words “makes everything happen.” Originally from Oregon, Camille Carson’s love of horses started at an early age when her aunt, a dressage trainer, taught her how to ride. Carson’s partnership with Detaunt, her Arabian gelding at the time, refined her riding skills and fostered her deep love and respect for horses. As she grew up, her dressage training expanded to include cross-disciplinary work in cutting, bareback, and endurance trail riding skills. When rescues arrive at the sanctuary, Carson draws on her extensive equine knowledge and connects with each horse as an

individual, using Trust Training and techniques grounded in horse behaviors, such as mirroring movements, to help heal past traumas and become adoptable to the right homes. She notes, “What we do here is establish a foundation of trust, and once we establish a foundation of trust with the horse, you can literally take a horse and do anything.” Though recovery looks different for each individual, Carson typically sees the rescues make significant progress in six months to a year and takes great joy in witnessing their distinct personalities come out. One horse, who Carson didn’t think was going to make it on the trailer ride home, went from malnourished and timid to sassy and glossy under her care. Her sister company, Unbound Horsemanship, provides training services for horse owners using her Unbound Training methods to help owners and their horses connect and thrive. The earnings from her business are the primary source of funding for the sanctuary. Between the rescue, her work as a trainer, and her advocacy for the SAFE Act, which would make the sale of horses for slaughter illegal in the United States, Carson gives a much-needed voice to the animals she has loved her whole life. Follow the Driftwood Horse Rescue and Sanctuary on Instagram @driftwoodhorse rescue, and visit www.driftwoodhorserescue. com for more information on how you can help the SAFE Act and donate to the cause.
