The magic of summer. July is when summer has truly come into its own, and back-toschool seems blissfully far off and the only thing we’re really holding ourselves accountable for is making sure we’re having fun. What can I say? We seem to have our summery priorities straight. We are knee-deep in baseball watching and barefoot being and lemonade stand arranging and marshmallow charring and raspberry picking and Draper Days dreaming, and our favorite: tree house sleeping. Our tree house is my kids' own place, and in it--under a canopy of leaves that shield them from the world--they are content and independent, with tricks up their sleeves and secrets and plans. They have adventures up there, and look out for one another even at three in the morning, without a thought to call for their parents, who are an open bedroom window, and a “10-4, good buddy” on the blue walkie-talkie, away. There's an almost ritual that has established itself, before they sleep in the treehouse. They are uncharacteristically solicitous to one another, and help each other gather flashlights and books and blankets and things for the night. I play the part of mother hen clucking softly over her chicks, cozying them in, blanket upon blanket, and the cats find us and tuck themselves in sleeping bag crevasses, filling up the in between spaces. I climb up with cocoa and a bedtime snack and we whisper away the minutes until I've been up there with them, just chatting, until almost midnight. Something seems simpler up there, and I wonder why this unhurried, patient goodnight scene never plays out in our house. The truth is this scene could never play out in our house, and not just because the cats aren't allowed inside. There's something about the lawlessness of the tree house. It's an almost sacred kid-run space, a place beyond the rules of bedtime, a place decorum can't touch and moms don't get grouchy past 10 p.m. That’s the whole magic of it. Maybe that’s the whole magic of summer in general—that the things responsible adults don’t normally allow “in the house” or have room for in a structured life suddenly seem to be the very things that are non-negotiable. And in a way, that’s what we celebrate in this issue: Draper Days and pie--nay, the study of pie; a party dedicated to the eating of ice cream; an ultimate tree house built by boards and dreams; a parade to anticipate, then slow down and sit and appreciate; perfect parks for days; a getaway for the daring. All in all, the good stuff summer is made of, the fun stuff, the stuff that makes us, the grown-ups, act like kids again. (That alone is magical.) Hope your summer is fun and full of all the things that make you happy—and that you’ve caught some of your own glimpses of magic too. I bet you have.

Around Town FAMILY EVENTS AT CORNER CANYON ACADEMY Corner Canyon Academy preschool hosted two events in May. First, preschoolers serenaded their mothers at an annual Mother's Day Tea. After singing, the children gave their moms hand-made gifts and strawberry shortcake. Then, the school invited dads and grandpas to come help fill their flower beds with annuals. Kids had a great time planting and taking pride in the beautifying and upkeep of their school, before guzzling down root beer floats. CornerCanyonAcademy.com.

THE SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM: EVERY HERO HAS A STORY The annual Summer Library Program, Every Hero Has a Story, kicked off with a summer party on June 6. The event included live music, entertainers, activities, a giant inflatable playground, train rides and crafts for the kids. Every year, the fun day inspires kids' reading all summer long. Sign up for the program throughout the month of July at the library, and take advantage of some ongoing activities as well--a "Candy Guessing Jar" runs until July 11, and a "Superheroes vs. Villains Quiz" runs until the 31st. DRAPER POLICE RUN TO SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS On May 5, members of the Draper Police Department participated in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Utah. Draper Officers and staff carried the “Flame of Hope” to Draper City Hall. The Draper Police Department supports Special Olympics Utah each year. The Torch Run is a large grass-roots fundraiser and helps raise public awareness for the Special Olympics, as well as funds to support local Special Olympic athletes. Nick Offerman, star of NBC’s Parks & Recreation, and spokesman for the cause, which is going on now and runs through Labor Day, jokes, “Of course it’s great. Head out west to enjoy one of the more multifaceted and natural parks in Draper. Situated along the verdant banks of the Jordan River, the Jordan River Rotary Park offers something for everyone: biking/ walking/running along the adjacent Jordan River Parkway trail, fishing, picnicking under covered tables or large pavilion, Frisbee throwing in the grassy fields, playing in the two large playgrounds (one adaptive) and bird watching. Many parks have BBQ stands, but only Draper Park has a fire pit surrounded by benches, which makes a fun setting for all to gather round and roast hotdogs or s’mores. There are only two minor inconveniences: The fire pit, located near the southeast pavilion is close to 1300 East’s traffic and it cannot be reserved. Before conquering Corner Canyon, perhaps a refresher ride is in order at this newer park. Riders of all levels can test their ability on several tracks, including skills, pump and flow tracks. Bring a helmet. South of Andy Ballard Equestrian Center. 1600 East Highland Drive.

Raise the Flag and Fire the Cannon A SHORT HISTORY OF THE 24TH OF JULY IN DRAPER ARTICLE LUANA GUYMON

raper residents have always been involved in July 24th celebrations. In 1857, Andrew Jackson wrote: “Having got thro with my harvist I concluded to attend the selebration and a picnic party at the head of Big Cottonwood Canion 26 miles from my home.” Draper residents were among 2,587 Saints celebrating the 10th anniversary of the arrival of the pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley. President Brigham Young led the three-day celebration. On July 24, the flag was unfurled from the highest peak followed by a prayer, singing and the roaring of the cannon. During this celebration the official news of Johnson’s Army was delivered. In the following years the Saints looked forward to their July 24th celebrations. Loyalty to our country was exhibited by raising the flag, singing the Star Spangled Banner and reading The Declaration of Independence. Eunice Walbeck wrote: “The outstanding celebration among the people living here at the time was the 24th of July celebration in 1882. It was held in Ebenezer Brown’s orchard on Fort Street. For a number of evenings before the celebration men and boys gathered and took down all the dead trees and trimmed the live ones and cleaned up the place.” The Draper Sunday School was in charge that year and they decided to introduce ice cream and soda at their celebration. Bids were taken from those who wished to make the new refreshment. Mr. and Mrs. William Terry and Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Terry were the lowest bidders.

Property for the Draper Park was acquired from Joshua Terry about 1901. It was a flat piece of ground with no hills and no streams. The first July 24th celebration was held there in 1902 and once again the cannons roared; breakfast was served and booths were opened for selling goodies. Over the years games were held along with a greased pig to catch, a greased pole to climb, pony rides and ball games. Horse racing and fireworks were later introduced. The first year a car was given away was in 1946. Raffle tickets were sold for $1 each and the car that year was won by Allen P. Smith. This continued for many years. In early years the LDS Wards were in charge of the celebration and each ward had a float in the parade. At one time there was a fence around the park and it was necessary to purchase tickets to get in. When asked what they remembered most about the 24th celebration, several older Draper residents said the same thing: “It was always held on the 24th of July.” They remembered the games, races, cook-offs, Bingo, horse pulling contests, the ball games with the young against the old-timers, train and little car rides along with pony rides for the children. Over the years the parade routes and many other things have changed but the reason for the celebration will always be the same. Let us remember our freedoms as we celebrate this year.

“P

ie is happy. Pie is pretty. Pie is fun,” says Draper resident Jennifer Pulley, who has competed in the Draper Days Pie and Homemade Jam Contest for the past four years. On July 17, she plans to compete again. Watch out fellow contestants because behind the nice words is a serious contender. “It all starts from scratch,” she admits. Immediately following each contest she works on a new original recipe, not taken from the internet or a cookbook. Rachel Farr baked a Key lime pie She rolls up her sleeves for the Draper Days Pie Contest. and improves upon recipes, experimenting with different filling combinations and enhancing textures. “I love the culinary science behind a pie.” She credits her sister for teaching her all she knows. The contest table has been graced with her creative genius — a Banoffee Pie, which is a glorified banana cream with caramelized whipped cream, bananas and homemade milk chocolate toffee chunks. Her prize-winning Peppermint Truffle Pie and a Caramel Chocolate Toffee Pie are scrumptious. Last year Pulley made the “best pie of her life” — a Berries Romanoff (fresh berries topped with a sour-and-whipped-cream chiffon). However, that “best pie of her life” didn’t win. “Judges seem to go for chocolate,” she says. “A chocolate peanut-butter something won. It made me laugh. It showed me I can’t take myself too seriously.” Luckily, she is undeterred and plans a top-secret creation to wow the judges this summer.

“I am going to win,” says Pulley. “Hands down! I want bragging rights.” Jacquelynn Sokol, a contest organizer, still talks about Pulley’s Berries Romanoff pie. “It’s the best part of the job,” she says about pie sampling. Non-winning entries are donated to the Draper City Fire Department working at Draper Days. Sokol does more than put her fork into pies. She organizes the judges—the Jens Charnholm won 2nd place two years ago at the Draper Days Pie mayor, a local celebriContest for his apple pie. ty and a bona fide local baker “just to be legit.” Kneaders is the sponsor and provides prizes. “The newly crowned Miss Draper is always a judge in the youth category, and children love it when she taste tests their pies with her crown on.” “Competition for adults and youth is all about fun,” she adds. Many families and neighbors compete against each other. Sokol offers pie makers two pointers: 1) July heat turns cream pies into soup, so bring them in at the very last minute. 2) “Be creative, but not too creative.” Life-long Draper resident and former mayor Darrell Smith has judged the contest for several years and loves the concept. “It incorporates an old-time tradition into a community celebration,” he says. “Sometimes we forget that people like to take pride in their creations.” Smith finds it particularly wonderful that children participate in the contest, sometimes with the help of their mothers. That partnership helps pass on family traditions and recipes. “Above all,” he says, “the contest allows people to compete with prized desserts.” His delicious job has involved sampling up to 15 pies at one sitting. While he’s never tasted one he didn’t like, he noted that peach pies hold a special place in his heart. “They remind me of my mother who was an excellent cook. She’d prepare peach pie for nine kids.” Smith has been attending Draper Days for years, but this year he won’t be judging. Prep Time: 20 Min + freezing Cook Time: N/A Effort Level: Easy Yield: 2 Pies This is a family favorite. It’s no bake, it’s simple, and is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. 10 oz. evaporated milk Two 3.4 oz. packages lemon instant pudding mix 22 oz. cream cheese (3 packages less 2 oz.) softened. And yes, it really does make a difference if you use too much cream cheese. Just whack off the last 2 oz. of cream cheese from the third package and use the rest on a bagel or something… One 12 oz. frozen lemonade concentrate – Partially thawed. 1 prepared pie crust. GARNISHES: WHIPPED CREAM, MINT SPRIGS, LEMON SLICES, FRESH RASPBERRIES OR SPRING JIMMIES…WHATEVER LOOKS FUN.

1. Whisk together evaporated milk and pudding mix in a bowl 2 minutes or until thickened. 2. Beat cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer, using whisk attachment, until fluffy. 3. Add lemonade concentrate, beating until blended; add pudding mixture and beat until blended. 4. Pour into crust and decorate as you want. 5. Freeze for 2 hours or until set. 6. Remove from the freezer about 30 minutes before serving.

There’s something charming going on in Draper. This something is so very Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn-esq and simple and pure, that it feels vital to a true “classic American summer.”

ny local who has taken time to wander down our city’s old farm-town streets has noticed there are little nuggets of charm to be found everywhere. Perhaps the most potentially adventurous of these nuggets are the large number of tree houses. What rings more true to the feel of an “all-American summer” than hanging out in your tree house, eating s’mores and telling ghost stories? If you’re up for a fun family scavenger hunt, pick a street in Draper and take a walk. Try counting the number of homes that either have a unique kid’s playhouse or an amazing tree house in the style of the Swiss Family Robinson. You will find everything from quaint, Victorian-style houses, to literal “hobbit homes,” to tree houses with slides for an exit. Still, none of these uniquely built playhouses quite rival one particular tree house located on Third East. The story behind this four-story club house is rather unique. It all began when Draper local, Billy Herrera, was asked by his son to install two pull-up bars for his son's Marine Corps training. Obligingly, Herrera built. After his son left home to serve his country, the pull-up bars remained, “withered and unused.” During one long summer, Herrera had a stroke of genius. He decided to use those old beams as a starting point to construct something amazing. He remembers: Back when I was a kid growing up in the seventies, my mom bought a new refrigerator, washer and dryer. My sisters and I took the boxes from those appliances and cut out windows and doors. Then we connected them with duct tape and had the greatest fort ever. It was summer and we spent three nights sleeping in it, then a monsoon rolled through and crushed our dreams. We felt invincible in that fort made of paper, until the roof came down on our heads from the weight of the downpour. Puppy Love was just coming out on the radio and, like many kids my age, I romanticized about bringing my girlfriend to that fort to hang out. As I got older I was always fascinated at the prospect of building my own treehouse, because it took me back to a time when all I needed

was a little imagination and a roll of duct tape to spend the long summer days. I was excited; I was ready to build the greatest fort ever. My kids were going to have the fort I never had. As my wife and I discussed the plans, I got chills reliving a part of my life I could never forget. I was going to put the fort up on stilts so that the legions of darkness could never reach us up there, 20 feet from the ground. The first installment of the tree house, the bottom floor, became a room designed for his granddaughters. It was at Herrera’s wife, Breezy’s, insistence that this “fairy cottage” space came to be and with a mutual understanding that, as Herrera says, “the girls were on their own when faced with invading hordes.” The second floor developed into a level designated for his two youngest sons and now grandsons that come to play. The third floor is a smaller room that is used as the sleeping quarters. To top it all off, literally, the “crow’s nest” sits high above, allowing the kids to climb “above the world and watch in playful observance and curiosity.” At first, Breezy was “vehemently” against the high tower, but Herrera was insistent, explaining to her, “The boys could suffer an ambush on their backside if they didn’t have 360-degree views from the fort, and so, I built the tallest crow's nest in the neighborhood. Breezy is terrified of heights. But the kids love it." As if having four floors of adventuring potential wasn’t enough, the package includes a bridge that extends out to a fire pole, decks on both levels, two entries to the second and third floor (one for you and one for the pirates), multiple swings and 100 GPH water cannons fully equipped to ward off bad guys or pesky neighbors, and totally off limits to girls. Swings and water cannons aside, the item of greatest note about this backyard gem is that its construction was motivated by love. Love of children, love of adventure and love of what many of us imagine as the classic American summer of our youth. Herrera sums it up perfectly when he says, It’s a great treehouse, but to be honest, other than the crow’s nest and the high powered water cannons, I’ll take my cardboard box fort over this one any day and twice on Sunday. That cardboard fort was a mythical place because of the state of mind that we enjoyed as children. A state of mind that allowed us to sleep well at night because we had no worries, no bills and certainly no stress. We just got to play. Our imaginations were crazy; some nights we really believed we were being overrun by Indians. There were no better days than those that reverberated with some stroke of our imagination. Life was simpler and little things meant so much more. Tom and Huck couldn't have said it better themselves.

raper resident Lisa Bigelow was a remarkable woman. She was a committed wife, a fiercely loyal friend, an adoring grandma and a loving mom to seven children. Many described Bigelow as a vibrant, beautiful woman whose smile lit up the room and whose inf luence and service were immeasurable. Bigelow passed away at the age of 53 on March 3, 2015, after a year-long battle with ovarian cancer. Her friends and family struggled to know how to fill the void. “We felt an urgency to do something and pay tribute to our amazing friend. We loved her and wanted to honor her life long after the funeral was over,” says Draper resident Tami Tappan, Bigelow's best friend and neighbor. Bigelow’s greatest joy was being a mom, so Tappan, along with Bigelow’s daughter, stepdaughter, four daughters in law and sisters, mom and other close friends, explored the idea of hosting a yearly Mother’s Day Brunch to raise money to create chemotherapy comfort bags to be delivered to patients throughout the valley. Someone had delivered such a bag to Bigelow when she began treatment. It was filled with comforting necessities including a blanket, a water bottle, fuzzy socks, lotion, candies and a hand-written note to give her courage to face the pains of chemotherapy. Raising money to make “Lisa’s Angel Bags,” seemed like a perfect way to honor their mom and friend. However, within just a few days of Bigelow’s passing, Tappan stumbled on a story about a cancer-stricken Ohio woman facing a surprisingly difficult challenge. This stranger’s story changed everything. Michelle Hammond of Cincinnati, Ohio, a mother of three, was diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer. She and her husband determined that her best treatment option was in Chicago, Illinois. The night before her chemotherapy treatments began, her husband checked her into the hospital with the plan to meet her the following day to start her treatments. The next morning, however, he failed to show up and did not answer his cell phone. Michelle eventually contacted the hotel staff and was given the devastating news that her husband had suffered a massive heart attack and had passed away the night before in his room. Stunned and heartbroken beyond belief, Michelle postponed her cancer treatments, left the hospital alone and returned

home as a single mom to begin funeral arrangements for her husband. “The moment I read this story, I knew that we needed to expand our focus to support a single mom battling cancer,” says Tappan. “Years earlier, Lisa had also been a single mom, so this is exactly what she would have wanted.” The team of Bigelow’s friends and family established a non-profit called The Forget Me Not Angels Foundation, with the goal to help a single mom with cancer or a single mother struggling to support a child with cancer. The foundation’s mission statement declares, “In honor of mothers we have lost to cancer, we give hope and courage to mothers who are still battling.” Many outsiders cautioned that the process of establishing such a foundation could take up to a year, but these determined women looked past the naysayers and anxiously engaged themselves in preparing for their first fundraising event. Just weeks after Bigelow’s passing, the inaugural brunch took place on May 9 this year on a rainy Saturday--the day before Mother’s Day. The hallways were lined with gift baskets filled with thousands of dollars’ worth of goods and services, donated for a silent auction. Items included VIP Real Salt Lake soccer tickets, box seats

for the Salt Lake Bees, signed sports apparel and collectibles, sessions from Draper photographers, haircuts and spa services from local salons and even a weeklong time-share in Southern California. The group’s initial goal was to sell 75 tickets to the event, but as the doors opened, these women stood humbly with tears in their eyes as they watched hundreds of people standing in the rain to buy a ticket to support their cause to honor their friend’s life. That day, $9,500 was raised. Kim Tycksen, Bigelow’s sister, says she is thrilled to know of the awareness their efforts will create.

The Forget Me Not Angels Foundation plans to deliver every year on Bigelow’s birthday “Lisa’s Angel Bags” to as many patients as their funds will allow, and the annual Mother’s Day Brunch will gift the proceeds to a single mom experiencing unique challenges as she battles cancer. Can one person change the world? These Draper women are certainly showing that it is possible.

“No one plans to get cancer. We certainly didn’t. And you don’t know until you are thrust into it that you realize the desperate need to be embraced by a community. That is what we are trying to do here.”

erched high in the clouds, Kimball Junction spread out map-like and buzzing beneath us. We look out at the horizon and feel adventurous and able. It is simply gorgeous up here—the showy evergreens tucked against the Wasatch, the summer sky a robin egg’s blue and the clouds puffy perfection. “It’s a Toy Story sky,” my kids each remark, one after the other, as we wait turns to ride, to zip, to climb. We are at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, pitting our braves against the ropes, and learning a bit about the area’s robust skiing history and the 2002 Olympics. And it’s something wonderful. We are gleeful, not quite ourselves, taking in big gulps of mountain air and feeling cooler than we have all summer in the valley, even whilst attached to cables via harness and wearing super flattering helmets. With several activities to choose from, including two museums showcasing interactive exhibits and past Olympic memorabilia, and the Flying Ace All-Stars Freestyle Show that features stunning aerial acrobatics courtesy of Olympians and National Team skiers and snowboarders, the Utah Olympic Park is a perfect summer field trip. It’s close enough to conquer in a day with little planning, but far enough away that I forget myself—forget the things I’m supposed to be doing at home, and I’m just there. With my family. Laughing and screaming. Blame it on all the adrenaline-inducing activities. With an alpine slide, two zip lines (including the “Steepest in the World”), a drop zone, the Comet Bobsled ride, several adventure ropes courses for all abilities and a playground for the youngest set, it is indeed a place to lose yourself. 26

And find yourself, too. Because, from a soaring platform, my teenager crossed the threshold’s edge and took one defiant leap toward the cloud-sculpted blue horizon; on a ropes course my son balanced handily—and without hands!—while traversing suspended bridges and web-like ropes; and on a roller coaster-like slide, my youngest daughter fought fear and learned to control a sled, then trust herself, and then zoom and fly, triumphant. At the end of our day, my 9 year old grabbed my hand as we walked back to our car. She was pink-cheeked, hair swirling out of her French braid, her eyes alive with the feeling of having conquered that mountain, and she said to me, “I’ve always wondered what those big green things on the mountain were.” (She’s referring to the swooping Nordic Ski Jumps, covered in artificial turf.) “And now I know.” Does she ever. Draper’s Neighborhood Watch Gets A Makeover DEBI D’AMICO BRINGS NEW ENERGY, NEW APP TO PROGRAM ARTICLE LINNEA LUNDGREN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

raper is a relatively low-crime community to live in and will remain so if resident Debi D’Amico has her way. D’Amico, a mom of four and grandma of three, is the new crime prevention specialist with the Draper City Police Department. She is putting a fresh face on the neighborhood watch program through her energy, her desire to help people and with the help of a free smartphone app. “I care about this community and I want to make it a safer place,” says D’Amico, who started working on Draper’s Neighborhood Watch Program in February. Prior to that, she worked in the mortgage and real estate industry for 25 years. It wasn’t until three years ago when her stepson was shot and nearly killed (in Salt Lake City) that her life changed. The shooting changed heroutlook. “It makes you re-evaluate how valuable family is and how much you want to be with them,” she says. In the high-pressure mortgage and real estate world she was working nonstop and hardly home. She decided to redefine her goals and pursue her passion— criminal law—something she knew she wanted to do since childhood, but was sidetracked. “Criminal law became rooted in my head because, from age 5 to 16, I spent some weekends visiting a close relative at the Utah State Prison,” she recalls. Visiting regulations were different back in the mid 70s and early 80s. “When we visited, we’d pack up our food, the crock pots, playpens and toys for the kids and bring it out to the prison Saturday morning, pack it up Saturday afternoon and start all over again on Sunday,” she explains. Her visits exposed her to prison life—she talked with convicted felons and played cards with the guards— and cemented her interest in criminal law and the justice system. A self-described people person, D’Amico says she loves working with Draper Neighborhood Watch because she can interact, educate and assist Draper residents. “I get to work at being pro-active rather than reactive.” 28

Her goal is to get the word out that Draper is a safe place because its residents are aware. “We have approximately 40 officers for a city of about 45,000,” she says. “The officers can’t be everywhere all the time. This is why neighborhood awareness is key.” Neighborhood Watch promotes the idea that residents are the eyes and ears of the community. The only commitment needed is awareness and willingness to report suspicious circumstances, people or vehicles. “Draper residents are the best preventative option out there." Awareness is simple. It might involve notifying a neighbor if their garage door is open at night, removing valuables from your car or reporting people who case out homes by ringing the doorbell to determine if it is occupied. A new smartphone app used by Neighborhood Watch called ICE BlackBox makes it simple and easy for residents to document and report suspicious circumstances or criminal actions. “It’s a one-step, one-button preventative device,” D’Amico says. Plus, it’s free. If neighbors witness a crime in progress or a suspicious car/person the app allows them, at the push of a button, to video the incident, track the location via GPS, and, if necessary, dial 911 on a secondary button. Video cannot be deleted, edited or lost because it is automatically uploaded to the ICE BlackBox’s secure cloud. New neighborhood signs reading, “Neighborhood Watch Now: All phones armed with mobile video surveillance” will be installed in areas involved in the watch program. D’Amico wants potential perpetrators to see the signs and to know that that neighborhood is serious about crime prevention. hey spring up mid-summer, up and down Fort Street, just like the tulips did last April. Overnight they blossom. Mostly they are the white, plastic variety but inter-mingled you will see folding ones, leftovers from old church buildings, a few green ones and even some old-fashioned woven-web ones. Lawn chairs begin lining the street, sprouting up and filling in, up and down the road. Visitors to town wonder what is happening along the route and are amused to find that the event is still two or even three weeks away. For the month of July, the locals live in “anticipation” of Draper Days and also relish in a bit of smugness that they have “saved” the perfect spot under the shadiest tree. The funny thing about our “the early bird gets the best taffy” mentality is that there is still plenty of room for even the latest of comers to view the parade. Plenty of room for any young child to be in a prime spot to catch candy. Plenty of room to pitch an awning and bring your own shade. And even if you have “homesteaded” the perfect spot on the perfect corner, Draperites all become instant neighbors along the route--long before the police motorcycles arrive, honking their horns and driving in figure-eights down the street. In the early summer morning, old friendships are rekindled and new friendships made while 38

everyone looks out for the little ones. Watermelon and muffins, squirt guns and blankets are shared by all…it really doesn’t matter how early in the month you planted your chair. There is something reassuring in the seasonal blossoming of Draper corn, snow cone shacks and plastic lawn chairs. Something about the sameness of it, year after year, that calms us. As political candidates ride down Fort Street throwing Tootsie Rolls from the back of convertible Corvettes and a new generation of cheerleaders perform handsprings across the pavement, life seems like it’s going as it should be. The music of local marching bands and rock and roll churches drowns out our daily cares—for a morning anyway. Bottles of free water quench our thirst. And most important, neighbors have a few moments to sit, catch up on each other’s lives and remember why we all fell in love with this community. On this one day of the year, our little corner of the valley is caught in a time warp where “the good old days” collide with “the best is yet to come.” Where grown children return home to family barbeques and concerts in the park and new families are initiated with the “Best Fireworks Show in the Salt Lake Valley.” Where else are there old-fashioned rodeo queens and new-fashioned Idol contestants? It is a magical weekend of high-flying, swimming dogs, calves covered in money and the Beatles getting together again for one last performance. Draper Days reminds so many of their deep roots and for young families starting out, it is a place to begin building traditions. The best part though…it is fun! Almost before the last sparkler is doused on the 4th of July, the chairs will begin to line the street, in anticipation of an even bigger July holiday. Overnight, motor homes will find a place to parallel park in the oddest of places. Most of us will roll our eyes and comment to our spouse, "Can you believe someone put out their chairs already?" But secretly, we will begin to hum the old song, "Anticipation is keeping me waiting." Because in Carly Simon’s words…"These are the good old days!"
