AFTER RELOCATING FROM PERU, WHERE THEIR FAMILY OWNED AN ATHLETIC CENTER THAT INCLUDED A MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL, THE MORAS FAMILY OPENED AMYS TAEKWONDO CLUB IN DRAPER IN 2010. The name "AMYS" is actually an abbreviation for several of the Moras siblings. As it was chosen by their parents, the family decided to keep the name even though it is also a proper name. The Draper martial arts club is run by the parents; another sibling; and Amely and Melany Moras, both master instructors at the school. “We just opened one of the largest schools in the U.S.,” Amely says. “It is more than 6,000 square feet, a beautiful facility that we custom built next to Harmon's. We have worked hard to get to this point. We have really good relationships with the community, especially the local elementary schools. A lot of students come to our school, and we do provide anti-bullying seminars and whatever we can to support them.” AMYS prides itself on being very involved with the local community. The instructors often provide seminars for church groups, local boys and girls clubs and moms clubs, as well as participate in several events around the community, such as Draper Safety Days. The school teaches an Olympic-style Taekwondo: One of the instructors recently won a national championship. Several students have made national teams, and training is available for athletes who want to compete on that level. The black belt earned from AMYS is recognized around the world. Students can start as young as 2 years old. “We don’t have our students attend more than three times a week because we want them to love and enjoy what they are doing and not get burned out,” Amely says. “We are also very conscious about them being involved in other activities, so we are flexible in our programs.” The school also offers classes in tumbling and non-competitive

LIKE MANY OF US, KEN AND LAURA KELTER ARE TRANSPLANTS TO UTAH. Theyâ€™ve lived here for 21 years, and this is where their girls, Brynn and Alexa, have grown up. Laura is from upstate New York, and Ken is from southern California. They moved to Utah in 1997 to expand Kenâ€™s business in land development. While living in Highland years ago, they heard about the Skaggs Catholic Center that would be built in Draper, so they decided to build a home here. They broke ground on their home in 2003 and moved in upon its completion in 2004. Ken laughed when he explained that

Laura put nearly 40,000 miles on her car that year, largely on trips from Highland to Draper to meet with Ken at the construction site. “It took 11 months to build this house because I wanted to make sure our young girls were taken care of while also getting the details of the house right,” Laura says.

THEIR “ACCIDENTAL COMPANY.” It’s what Melissa and Rick Hinnant call Grace & Lace— their successful fashion company that bloomed from great tragedy and a pair of boot socks. Rick owned a landscaping company, and Melissa was in real estate. They decided it was time to slow down and start a family, but surprisingly to them, this took more time than they expected. After years of trying, Melissa finally had a healthy pregnancy, and the two were on their way to fulfilling a lifelong dream.

LaVar’s class ended up with a double header: a newcomer, Don McLean, who opened the concert with his “Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie” and the Blood, Sweat and Tears rock band. LaVar call him Rep. Christensen may have aged a bit since high school, but he’s still primed for rock ‘n’ roll. For the 17th year running, he spearheaded Draper Nights: The Perfect Ending to Draper Days, with two rousing double-header concerts. But the mild-mannered former bishop has other passions, too: baseball, his family’s history of service in Utah’s territorial legislature, conservative politics, religious freedom, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, plus his own work as a developer on some of Draper’s premier communities. 34
