The rodeo kicks off the festivities the weekend before the official Draper Days. THE SHEMWELL FAMILY’S BACKYARD OASIS

The Shemwells redesigned their backyard in 2008 with help from Dean Anesi of The Urban Garden Company and a pool from Omega Pools. But last year called for redoing an area that had become too shady for the original plants. They used The Urban Garden Company again for the design and hired Summerhays Landscape to carry it out. “We had heard about the quality of Summerhays," Kim Shemwell says. "In addition to Ryan’s solid reputation, we appreciated his reasonable pricing. The project turned out so well, we asked his team to help us with a drainage issue and new plantings around the yard.” The family’s backyard has become their summer living space. They advise anyone considering a landscape project to have a comprehensive plan for the ability to complete it in stages over time. Opening Day at the new Draper Splash Pad Park - May 24, 2018 Draper City opened its first Splash Pad Park to a large crowd of eager young children. The new park will make for fun and memorable times for kids and their parents. The park will be open every day from 10:00 a.m. and will close at 8:00 p.m. The city has posted a large sign with the rules of the park. Please remember: No dogs allowed. No food or drink in water area. No glass containers. No biking or skateboarding. Swim diapers for young children. Address: 150 East 13400 South, Draper.

Two other parks are located near the new Splash Pad . Dayland Dog Park, built only two years ago, is now the most popular and most visited park in the city. Open from 6:00 a.m. until dusk. Closed Tuesday mornings for cleaning. Pick up your dogâ€™s waste immediately. Bags and large waste receptacles are located throughout the park. Dogs need to be licensed, vaccinated and wear rabies and license tags. Dogs should be under voice control. Address: 200 East 13400 South, Draper. Smith Fields Park features two tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground, a skate park, a baseball/softball field and one multiuse field. There is a covered pavilion that you can reserve. (100 max.) The Skate Park is popular for skateboarders, roller skaters and scooters. Open from 6:00 a.m. until dusk. Please remember to pick up your trash. Draper City’s Corner Canyon Keep the Water Clean and Pristine

Corner Canyon is a protected watershed area and dogs are not allowed on the trails above Bonneville Shoreline trail. On all other Draper trails, dogs are required to be on leash. The water from this canyon is used for culinary water for Draper households. Two years ago, Draper City had a serious issue with E. Coli (“dog waste”) in the water. Since Draper City stopped allowing dogs in the watershed, the bacteria level in the water has dropped to a treatable level. This a direct correlation to water quality improvements. The Rural Water Association gave Draper City an award for improving the water in the canyon. Thank you, Draper residents, for putting your dogs on leashes, picking up their waste and keeping your dogs out of the watershed area. Be advised that Draper City has a Park Ranger who spends his time on Draper Trails. If your dog is off leash or in the watershed area, he will issue you a ticket.

Cool off at the city’s coolest new park located just west of the Dayland Dog Park. Modeled after Corner Canyon, Draper Splash Pad is complete with real boulders and has rivers and dams, a paddle board, dumping buckets, water cannons, water jets, ground nozzles, misters and permanent shade structures. DRAPER’S CROSSFIT O.U.R. is CrossFit with a purpose. Located across from Ikea, this gym’s membership fees support Operation Underground Railroad, a nonprofit that rescues human trafficking victims around the world with a special focus on children. The organization also helps with the capture and prosecution of offenders as well as recovery programs for victims. Tim Ballard, founder and CEO of O.U.R., spent 12 years as a U.S. Special Agent for the Department of Homeland Security working on Internet crimes against children and serving on a jump team that infiltrated and dismantled dozens of trafficking organizations. He left his government job in 2013 to establish O.U.R. The organization has a slew of volunteers, including jump teams made up of former government agents and U.S. Special Operations Forces members, who perform O.U.R.’s covert operations. Peggy, the manager at CrossFit O.U.R., says their clientele, coaching staff and daily workouts are all diverse. “We have a mix of different backgrounds with coaches. One is a firefighter, I’m a mom, we have teachers, a nurse and an insurance agent. Everyone who coaches at our gym does it because they love the gym, the cause and being part of it,” she says. The clientele runs the gamut from working professionals and college students to mothers and senior citizens. “We can modify workouts so everyone can make it work for their lifestyle and physical needs,” Peggy says. The CrossFit model involves a Workout of the Day that changes daily to keep its customers challenged. Workouts incorporate weightlifting, gymnastics, rowing, biking and sprinting. Classes are offered Monday-Saturday with a special class for beginners Saturday mornings.

Once you’ve bowled a 300 or screamed “Yahtzee!” from the rooftops, help your guests cool off—both from the heat and some intense competition. Lemonade, the resident summer drink cooler, is even better in frozen form. Try this tart, creamy concoction combined with Jell-O—the food that makes anything a little bit more fun—and hit it out of the park with these after-party treats. PRO TIP: Punch the popsicle stick through a cupcake liner to catch those messy drips!

FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest

WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set. 2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth. 3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (they’ll need to fit in the popsicle molds). 4.
