I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS ARE SUCH A CONNUNDRUM DEEP IN A SNOWY WINTER. Cold January makes me want to hibernate and bury deeper under cover of fuzzy blanket and forced heat and not emerge until April... But the iconic thing persists despite my sleepiness and I find myself among the throngs of those who hit the gym harder, make the dinner healthier, and sometimes, just try for a fresh start. This issue of Draper Lifestyle hopes to inspire some of those things, while helping us all consider a very basic --but often revolutionary-- tennant of all human needs, and that is self-care. So, featured in this issue are some ideas for health, wholeness and wellness. First, local exercisers and trainers--from those doing things out of the box and out of the gym-

FIT4MOM

NEW YEAR, NEW WAYS TO EXERCISE /////

FIT4MOM When Shayla Streiff moved from Las Vegas to Utah three and half years ago, she had to live in Draper. Nowhere else would do. The reason: Fit4Mom had a location here. “It’s such a big part of us,” says the mom of 4-year-old Lily and 2-year-old Liam about the pre- and post-natal exercise class for moms with kids in tow (or not). Fit4Mom classes, held at Draper City Park, have given Streiff such a sense of purpose and well-being that it dictated where she lived. Now she’s an eight-minute drive from the park. “I get to exercise and talk to other moms who are just like me going through the same things. My kids make friends and have playtime every morning. We exercise and we all feel good for the day,” she says. Moms wearing workout wear, most pushing baby strollers, meet weekdays from 9-10 a.m. in the park. During the winter months they meet at various indoor locations. The instructor-led routines vary, but involve combinations of strength training, cardio, a core workout, plyometrics, stroller barre (a class with weights that is a combo of yoga, pilates and ballet), walking/jogging, and stretching. “There is no judgment here,” Streiff says. “These are moms at every [fitness] level and every stage in life—some moms are pregnant, some moms just had babies, some moms are running marathons. You can tailor the workout to your fitness level and the instructors do a great job at helping you do that.” As the moms exercise, their kids do what kids do best—run around, play, or sleep in the stroller. Streiff says it’s important that her kids see that she exercises on a regular basis and that exercise can be fun. During exercise routines, moms and instructors sing songs, blow bubbles and do other fun activities to keep kids engaged and happy. “I love to spend time with my kids. They are my whole life,” Streiff says. “I don’t want to put them in a gym daycare and go exercise. I like that they are involved.” The first two classes of Fit4Mom are free. Contact Nikki Day at

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD (SUP) YOGA Try doing a downward-facing dog yoga pose...on a paddleboard...in the water. You’ll quickly learn that you can’t control the board. It moves with every wave and body movement. What you can control, however, is your awareness of even the smallest movements and your breath. And isn’t that the essence of yoga? “It’s a way to help find your balance with the breath, which is our anchoring system,” says AnneMarie White, a longtime yoga instructor who teaches stand-up paddleboard (SUP) yoga at Draper’s Treehouse Athletic Club’s outdoor pool and at local lakes in the summertime. SUP Yoga is different than yoga on the mat. Poses that are easy on the floor may be difficult on the unsteady board and vice versa. Then there’s the wind, the sun and, of course the moving board to contend with. SUP yoga could be called the great equalizer since beginners and advanced yoga students alike do the same thing—fall off the board into the water. “It takes the seriousness out of yoga,” White says. “Everyone falls off their board and it doesn’t mean failure. It means you just get back up again. You get to pretend you’re a kid again and have fun....”

STAND-UP

PADDLEBOARD (SUP) YOGA

White’s interest in yoga started 17 years ago after watching a yoga video with her husband, Jason, who she calls her biggest cheerleader throughout her yoga teaching career. She has been teaching for 15 years while raising three kids. Yoga’s image, says the Draper resident, has changed for the better over that time. “It’s not considered fringe or alternative anymore,” she says. “It has become a regular practice for a broad range of people, from senior citizens to high-level athletes, seeking to enhance the connection with their body in a mindful way." In addition to teaching group SUP yoga classes at Treehouse’s outdoor pool May through September, she teaches private SUP yoga for groups, including girl’s-nightout parties, book clubs and companies looking to provide “strength-building exercises” for their employees. She’s even had couples do a SUP yoga date night. Her students range in age from 8 to 70 and include a lot of men. Often participants are a bit nervous venturing out of their comfort zone into the water. That all disappears once they realize how fun and not-so-serious a SUP yoga class can be. “People feel empowered after taking the class,” she says, not only physically, but mentally. “They aren’t afraid to try something new.” For

Snowshoeing in Corner Canyon with Draper Parks and Recreation's Rick Anton. Photo Rick Anton

WINTER HIKING/SNOWSHOEING PROGRAM WITH DRAPER CITY PARKS AND RECREATION Corner Canyon sees plenty of visitors during the warm months, but come wintertime only a handful of people visit. Draper City Parks and Recreation Department hopes to encourage residents to journey through this winter wonderland through a program of weekly hiking/snowshoeing trips starting January 10 and continuing weekly on Wednesday and Saturdays throughout the month. “Corner Canyon is a whole other canyon when it snows,” says Rick Anton who leads the hikes and works as a trails- and open-space technician with Draper Parks and Recreation. “It is very quiet, ice forms on the springs, and the snow on the trees creates a thick canopy.” And there’s the wildlife bonus: animal tracks are easy to spot as are golden eagles, who frequent the area in winter. The idea, Anton says, is to get people to enjoy winter sports nearby, in a fun, inexpensive way. Snowshoes and poles are provided when there’s snow. If not, participants will hike. The cost is $25 for four hikes, with each hike lasting between two and three hours. The outings are loop and/or destination hikes and cater to beginner to intermediate hikers 14 years and older. “[Snowshoeing] is just a great way to get out, and it’s the easiest way to get out in the snow,” Anton says. “On some of the red air days, you can head up to the South Maple Hollow trails and you are out of the smog. You just put on snowshoes and go for it.” Register online at Draper.Ut.Us or at the Draper Parks and Recreation Office in the lower level of City Hall, 1020 E. Pioneer Road.

THROUGHOUT DRAPER AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY, PILATES HAS BECOME AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR FORM OF EXERCISE.

While some claim that Pilates has helped them recover from injuries, others use it for general physical fitness to improve balance, posture, and stamina. The studio Pilates Revolution has been providing a wide variety of fitness classes to Draper residents. Here, three people share their own experiences with the studio, and with Pilates in general.

TA S H A LO W E RY Tasha Lowery has never been a fitness guru or a gym rat. She admits, “I really [just] like to eat chocolate and read books. I’ve just never been super sporty.” But when Pilates Revolution opened near her home, Lowery made a goal to make Pilates part of her consistent exercise routine. And she quickly realized that the activity stood out from a typical gym regimen. She says, “Pilates is really focused on the whole body. It tones and strengthens muscles you didn’t even know you had.” She also found the pace of the studio to be refreshing. “I like the way Pilates isn’t about killing yourself or destroying your body–it’s about starting where you are at and working slowly but consistently to be stronger, healthier, and more flexible.” All in all, Lowery was surprised to realize that while Pilates was making her healthier, she was having a little bit of fun. “Pilates is one form of exercise I truly do enjoy. …After an hour-long workout, you feel so much better. Your whole body is relaxed. You are tired but not exhausted. You are ready to face the day.” At Pilates Revolution, Lowery found a unique sense of community, and built a relationship with others at the studio: “We all know each other. We suffer through the hard classes together.” She also appreciated the positive atmosphere at Pilates Revolution, noting, “This isn’t about feeling badly about where you are at–it’s about embracing your body and finding your strengths.” For Lowery, Pilates has stuck, and she now recommends it to anyone looking to get back into a regular exercise routine.

PILATES REVOLUTION SUCCESS STORIES

(CON TI N UED)

ETHAN SMITH Ethan Smith had been dealing with back pain for years, and after a wave runner accident in 2010, the problem was only getting worse. On a whim, he tried Pilates at a local gym, and the benefits came quickly: within two months, he went from constant injuries and back injections to zero pain. Though he originally used Pilates to deal with his injuries, Smith has stuck with the activity for years. He noticed that daily activities were easier to perform: “Now, if I need to perform an activity requiring me to lift heavy weight, I can do it without injuring myself again.” And for Smith, exercising is as much a mental process as a physical one. He says, “For me, exercising is a therapy session. Whether its Pilates or weight lifting, I can always improve my mood by exercising.” Now, Smith recommends Pilates to all kinds of people. He says, “If you want to improve you posture, enhance the body’s stability, or strengthen your body’s muscles overall, Pilates is a must.” And Smith notes that Pilates’ many benefits: from decreased injuries to muscle strengthening, are not just for beginners. He says to book a private session and get started learning exercise techniques.

STEPHANIE SMITH Stephanie Smith has always had a passion for fitness. She was fist introduced to Mat Pilates as part of her dance training in New York,

and started taking more classes after moving back to Utah. For Smith, the activity was not only physically but also intellectually stimulating. She says, “I have a pretty active mind, and have a hard time focusing enough to not be bored during other forms of exercise. If I had to choose between eating worms and running, I would probably eat worms. [But] Pilates is so layered, and doing it correctly takes so much mental energy. I’ve always found it fascinating and invigorating.” In Utah, Smith decided to start her own Pilates studio. She wanted to share the benefits she had found from the activity, and believed that the studio could be a space for Draper residents to improve fitness, rehabilitate injuries, and build community. She has been able to see all of these goals come to fruition in establishing Pilates Revolution. “The best part of running this business has been putting together an all-star team. We seriously have some rock stars!” She has also already seen some amazing success stories. One woman, Jenn Garrett, participated in Pilates when she was pregnant with her eighth child. For Garrett, Pilates was helpful in dealing with debilitating back and stomach problems from a difficult previous pregnancy. Garrett continued Pilates until she was 40 weeks pregnant, and the pelvic and core strength she developed made her delivery and recovery much easier. Smith finds that stories like this motivate her to continue her work in the studio. She says, “Watching the physical and mental transformations of our clients has been fantastic...Clients become friends with our staff and their classmates: we are involved in each other’s lives and support each other.”
