An Ode to Draper Days JULY 2017

I

find that no matter how much my little family travels during the summer, we really like to be home and try to be home for Draper Days. Riding Razor scooters to the parade route, walking over to the park and melting in that afternoon sun while the kids bounce and roll and tumble, finding a food truck to have dinner at while munching on Kettle Korn, waiting all evening for it to get dark enough for fireworks—these things feel quintessentially summery and I find it magical that they happen in our own town. Or maybe that's why they're so magical. Because all these things are ours.

The best part of heading over to Draper Days is recognizing so many happy smiles on familiar faces. It’s like a big family reunion of people I don’t often always meet face to face but learn about as our awesome Draper Lifestyle writers profile them and tell their stories. I've had people tell me more than once that their favorite thing about Draper Lifestyle is recognizing their friends, family members and acquaintances in these pages. As a local publication, that is one of our main goals: that you know the people we feature—and that they are a good representation of your stories as well.

F

rom Mark Thackeray, Publisher of Draper Lifestyle Magazine, everyone involved on the magazine side, and

the other contestants, to the gyms and trainers, Carr says the whole transformation challenge experience was great! She believes the challenge helped showcase all the facilities involved regarding varieties of weight loss and fitness possibilities. “I just love the entire staff at Total Health and Fitness! My consultant Bailee was fantastic. She knew how to adjust my menu and workouts to get the results I was wanting. Donna was the trainer I worked with the most and she was the best. She had great energy and knew how to push me to my limits. I'm truly grateful for this entire experience,” says Carr. “Angie always came in with a positive attitude about the menu and workouts. If I asked her to try a new food, or gave her a new workout routine, she would take it and follow it exactly. Her determination and dedication to the program showed through her attitude and actions,” says her trainer at Total Health & Fitness, Bailee Whitworth. The Total Health & Fitness program fit perfectly for Angie’s busy lifestyle of being a mom and working full time. She gets an exact outline of what she needs to do every day for eating and exercise, taking out the guesswork gives her plenty of time to keep up with her busy life. 16

He saw this for what it was—an opportunity to turn his health and the rest of his life around. He put forth full effort and is someone anyone will respect and love working with as soon as you meet him,” says trainer David Johns. Johns says working with someone like Troy is rewarding and being able to witness him improve his everyday quality of life was as rewarding to him as the results were to Troy. Prows thrived on the energy of working with the Total Health & Fitness team. He was a favorite client because he was always excited for the next workout and challenge. He specifically likes not having any guesswork of what he is supposed to eat. Instead of feeling like he was required to 'stick to a diet', he sat down with the trainers weekly, and together they planned specific menus to accommodate his life and what he wanted to eat. Most of all, he benefited from the zucchini lasagna recipe, which he has eaten for lunch for the last two months and never wants to change it!

“MY TRAINER, JEFF, DID A GREAT JOB OF MAKING SURE I WAS ENJOYING THE WORKOUTS AND PUSHING MYSELF AT THE SAME TIME.”

B

erg says he is very excited about how much he learned about himself during the transformation challenge, including a better understanding of

how his body responds to different foods and exercises. “Pilates Revolution is a very nice studio. Everyone there is so thoughtful and fun. My trainer, Jeff, did a great job of making sure I was enjoying the workouts and pushing myself at the same time,” says Berg. “Adam took responsibility for his program, communicated what he enjoyed and what worked well for him, and developed a social network by bringing friends to the gym. This groundwork of competence, autonomy, and relatedness ensured his success during and after the competition,” says Berg’s trainer at Pilates Revolution, Jeffrey Allsop. Allsop also said he used an athletic and integrated approach to developing Berg’s training, and adjusted the workouts to his body for what did or didn't work well for him. Allsop kept an open line of communication, and an open mind with Berg so they could focus on strengths, developing weaknesses, increasing the type of training Berg enjoyed, and removing things that weren't suitable. Berg performed exercises including weightlifting, sprinting, agility, speed, balance, core and flexibility training. Allsop and Berg worked together on nutrition to ensure a holistic approach to changing his body.

adie was already a member at Treehouse Athletic Club prior to the challenge, and her popularity and

kindness throughout the club with other members really made it a fun environment. “There wasn't a day where someone wouldn't come up to her and reassure her how hard she was working and how good she looked throughout the challenge. I believe the positive energy and community provided by Treehouse Athletic Club is a big reason why Sadie was so dedicated and motivated every day of this challenge,” says Nicole Gonzalez, one of Sadie’s trainers at Treehouse Athletic Club. “Sadie was such an awesome contestant, we couldn't have asked for anyone better, we couldn't be more proud,” says Gonzalez. She goes on to say that Sadie was always so positive in the gym and gave it her all every day, and really pushed herself and proved to us that not only has she improved in her physical strength but mental strength as well.

told me she was a natural and would go far. If Cami's near water (lake, pool, or even just a puddle), she is in it. KELSIE SAYS: I would be shocked if there is someone in the

world who doesn’t love Cami. The only girl amid three brothers, Cami has learned that just because she is a girl doesn’t mean that she can’t keep up with them. Most of the time when I see her she is sporting a shirt with a sentiment such as “I call the shots” or “Girls never quit.” She is an amazing swimmer who, by the age of five, could swim all the competitive strokes, preform a flip turn, and execute a racing dive.

MATTHEW RIDGE, AGE 6 MATTHEW SAYS: I love swim lessons because I’ve learned a

lot about all the strokes and will be starting a swim team just like my older brother and sister this summer. I also love how fun the teachers make swim lessons. There are toys, a slide, and jumping off the wall. If I could swim anywhere... it'd be in the Olympics! MATTHEW’S MOM SAYS: Matthew’s favorite thing he learned is

that he can swim with his eyes open. He overcame that fear and now thinks he can learn so much more. He also likes the playing at the end of his lesson—he gets to choose an activity—and loves being filmed! Bowler Swim has been such a great foundation for Matthew. What he has learned has allowed him to move

Kelsie Bowler is 23 years old and has been teaching swim lessons for eight years. She swam competitively starting in the 4th grade and continued through all of high school. She attended Brigham Young University where she took courses such as Teaching Competitive Swimming where she was able to increase her knowledge as an instructor while working towards her bachelors degree in Art History and Curatorial Studies. She is an American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor who has served in numerous other teaching opportunities such as substitute teaching grades K-12, working as a teaching assistant at BYU, and teaching children in church settings. She currently works at CBC Advisors, a commercial real estate office, as a marketing specialist and will be attending graduate school at the University of Utah starting in the Fall.

swimming on our swim team to playing the piano to participating in science fairs, Kyle can do it all. He pushes himself, working past discomfort, so that he can better himself and learn more.

ABBY HOLLAND, AGE 11 ABBY SAYS: I like that we learn a lot and it's fun. My favorite

thing is that the teachers teach at my pace so swimming lessons aren't stressful, just fun. If I could swim anywhere, I would swim in the ocean—a tropical place with really cool critters.” KELSIE SAYS: Abby is a real smartie; she is also an abso-

BOSS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THRIVE AT UTAH BUSINESS WEEK ARTICLE JOSH PETERSEN

T

his month, students across the state of Utah will have a unique opportunity to further their education and experience in the

business field. Utah Business Week, hosted at Utah State University in Logan, is a weeklong program that gives high school students real life business experience. Students learn business from top industry professionals while competing in a business simulation. They make marketing, research/development, pricing decisions and much more. Students also work within teams to create a product, design a logo, and produce a radio commercial. Students will compete against other teams and be judged by professionals from the business community. This camp is organized and ran by the nonprofit group Foundation for Private Enterprise Education, with the goal of educating, encouraging, and preparing Utah students for business careers. Every year, participants look to Utah Business Week as a unique educational and social experience. Throughout the week, speakers and presenters on various topics related to business, finance, communications, accounting, and marketing. These presentations utilize many members of Utah’s expansive and highly successful business community. In 2016, speakers who had worked at many big-name companies, including Apple, Boeing, and Zions Bank, provided students with their unique insights and expertise. With speakers of this caliber, it’s no wonder that Forbes named Utah the best state for business in 2016. Throughout the week, UBW provides many opportunities for students to apply their new knowledge in activities and competitions designed to foster teamwork, innovation, and work ethic. However, Utah Business Work also leaves plenty of time for fun. This program brings like-minded students together, and developing friendships are encouraged through dances, live entertainment, games, skits and much more. In the competitive world of business, it is never too early to get a head start in furthering education and making connections. Every year, Utah Business Week attendees highly recommend the program. Alta student Megan Jeffries stated, “I would not trade my experience at UBW for anything else. I believe it will be invaluable to me as I move forward in deciding upon my future career.” Utah Business Week will be held from July 30–August 5. For more information, visit UtahBusinessWeek.org

HawkWatch Research Biologist Jesse Watson joins them, equipped with a ladder, a clean Pringles can, and a tackle box filled with metal and colored bands. “We follow strict protocols in our research to minimize disturbance and stress to the birds, but seeing as how it’s a warm day I am not too worried about keeping her off her eggs for a bit,” says Watson about the banding process, which takes five minutes.
