Dynamic Duos SIX SETS OF TWINS IN SUMMIT ACADEMY'S FIFTH GRADE ARTICLE MIMI DARLEY DUTTON | PHOTOGRAPHY LINNEA LUNDGREN

T

welve of the 108 students in Summit Academy’s 2016-17 fifth grade class are twins. That’s 11%! Two sets are identical, four are fraternal, and all have been at Summit since kindergarten.

Bob Zentner was principal in the fall of 2011 when all of the twins began kindergarten. “I remember when they were just little,” Zentner said; then, with a chuckle: “I had one mom say that unless they were standing together, she couldn’t tell them apart, so I didn’t feel so bad.”

He added, “Of all those twins that we had in my eight years at Summit, there were so many twins that were bosom buddies, the best of friends.”

BRITTA AND JENS CHARNHOLM Britta and Jens Charnholm are the only boy/girl set. Their names represent their Scandinavian heritage. Twins were a surprise for the Charnholms, though later they realized both parents had twins in their families a few generations back. Their mom, Linnea, was on bed-rest at the hospital one month prior to their arrival at 32 weeks. Britta and Jens stayed in the hospital for a month as preemies before being allowed to go home.

“They didn’t fit in their car carriers because they were so small, so we had to put rolled-up towels around them to brace the sides of their heads,” Linnea recalled.

FRANCIS AND ISAAC ACORD Fraternal twins Francis and Isaac Acord arrived on what their mom, Dirim, recalled was a snowy April day. The Acords didn’t find out the gender of their twins in advance. They’d assumed it would be a boy and a girl, so they went to the hospital with an outfit for each gender. “We were pleasantly surprised to have delivered two boys. Dad had to run out and pick out another boy outfit to go home,” Dirim said. She described the strong sense each twin has about the other, explaining that when they’re apart, they know where their twin is or what their twin is doing.

BEAU AND TREY DAUTEL Fraternal twins Beau and Trey Dautel were born in December at just 29 weeks. They had to stay in the hospital’s NICU for nearly two months. “We spent every day at LDS Hospital and the boys had their first Christmas there,” their mom, Katie, said. She shared that she and her husband had just ordered pizza from The Pie when her doctor notified them it was time for their twins to be born, and they weren’t allowed to eat the pizza. “We took them to The Pie on their first birthday so I could finally have that pizza!” Katie said. The boys have tried some twin tricks. “Before they realized they weren’t identical they used to try to trick us. We would play along and they thought it was hilarious,” Katie said.

KATE AND ANNIE HEATON Kate and Annie Heaton are fraternal twins who looked a lot alike when they were young but have grown less similar in appearance and whose personalities are very different. “They are very much siblings that were just born on the same day,” their mom, Megan, said about her girls who have a July birthday. Kate and Annie are named after their grandmothers and great-grandmothers. “We had them named before they were born and could tell who was doing what in the womb,” Megan said, adding, “They love to be together.”

SPENCER AND STEVEN HIGGS Spencer and Steven Higgs are identical twins born on July 11th, so their family calls them their “Slurpee babies”.

“They were less fussy and more content to be in the same bassinet at the hospital and they have been inseparable ever since,” their mom, Sandy, said. Both boys love to tell jokes and play soccer, though one cheers for Manchester United and the other for Manchester City.

“They have a connection between the two of them that I have never seen with my other three children,” Sandy said.

“Still to this day I cannot tell them apart from the back of their heads,” she added with a laugh.

JAZMIN AND JERZEY GARDNER Identical twins Jazmin and Jerzey Gardner were a “huge” surprise to their parents given that neither side had twins in their family. Born in June, their grandmother made name bracelets for them to wear as infants to help in telling them apart. When they dressed alike as little girls, Jazmin would wear pink and Jerzey purple. Now Jazmin sports brown hair while Jerzey remains blonde to help others know who is who. Each girl has her own personality and interests, but they are also very protective of one another according to their mom.

When I was diagnosed I went through a deep depression and basically gave up on life, even though I had also just found out I was pregnant with my second baby. I haven't always been overweight, but after I gave up on myself and got older, the harder it was for me to lose the weight. In 2014, I started working out and over a year ago I joined OTF and my journey has just blossomed. I don't suffer from depression anymore, I've gained many friends and family who are on the same journey as I am, my confidence is through the roof and my diabetes in under control. I love Orangetheory and I won't give up ANYMORE! Eleisha will be transferring her membership to the NEW Orangetheory Fitness Draper!

Ten months after joining OTF, I am down almost 70 pounds, off all medications and sleep apnea machine, and my doctor has given me a clean bill of health. He confided in me that after my visit with him a year ago, I was in such bad shape mentally and physically that he didn't think he would ever see me again. It hasn't been easy for me. OTF is hard work, yet at the same time, strangely addictive. I work out five days a week and am now training for Spartan this coming August. I've already paid for it so that will make sure I don't try and back out of it.

As with any kid who learns to ride, Elijah’s confidence grew and he continued bicycling after the camp. He spent a summer learning mountain biking skills with his dad in church parking lots and at Draper Park. Despite some spills and rough starts, Elijah joined the Corner Canyon High School’s mountain bike team first as a manager his sophomore year, then as a rider his junior and senior year. He never missed a practice and competed in races.

Andersen recalls joining him on team practice rides, mostly on dirt trails. “It was so cool to see his progress,” he says. “These were super technical, hard to ride trails, too.”

The Palmers say they see transformation in other special needs kids who attend Cycle Ability, many of whom go on to try other sports, such as swimming. Parents are transformed, too, says Sally.

“Their kids gain confidence and independence. It is a special thing to watch happen and see tears in parents’ eyes as their child rides a bike for the first time.”

Cycle Ability is dependent on volunteers to assist in the five bike riding sessions a day for five days. In past camps, they’ve had the Juan Diego Catholic High School girls’ soccer team, the Corner Canyon High School mountain biking team, along with Draper residents, volunteer. Area

“This is a unique volunteer opportunity to work one-on-one with someone and to see the joy that comes to them in just a matter of days from doing something they never thought was possible,” says Steven.

Andersen, who continues his friendship with Elijah with meet ups for ice cream, says the volunteer experience was worth it.

“It gives you a new perspective on what your abilities are and how you can help other people,” he says. “It’s amazing how a simple little thing like learning to ride a bike can make such a difference.”

Laughlin River Run Motorcycle Rally in Nevada that they’ve attended for 16 consecutive years, the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, and the ride up to Canada’s Vancouver Island.

Anderson’s longest ride to date—a solo trip around the circumference of the United States to celebrate his 50th birthday—is documented in a published photo book. Decked out in leather gear and taking back roads and visiting small towns, he spent 23 days covering 7,037 miles and riding through 18 states. His wife and longtime “riding buddy” Brent Taylor accompanied him for some sections. Anderson is now busy planning the next adventure for his 60th—a ride to Anchorage, Alaska.

“I’ve never looked back and have never bought anything other than a Harley after that first ride,” says Anderson, who wears a Harley-

Then there’s the on-the-road camaraderie that seems to come with Harley ownership. “Everyone waves,” Anderson says. “At gas stations, people come over to talk with you...you immediately have friends. You talk about your bike, your destination, past rides, and you just click.”

Wherever he rides, Anderson says he’s a defensive driver, never having had an accident or near miss in the 140,000 miles he’s ridden on his Harley. His rule-of-thumb is to “ride like cars don’t see you,” because sometimes they don’t.

“I love to drive,” says Andrews, and the ultimate expression of this passion is taking out his beloved motorcycle—his “body rocket” as he calls it—for a spin when the weather is good.

Andrews has been a fan of the BMW’s smooth ride and German engineering since 1972 with his first bike, a R100. He’s only owned three BMWs, because, he says “they are designed to go forever.”

Whether it be on the Nighthawk or the Elsinore dirt bike, McMillan enjoys taking his wife, Chris, on rides around Draper’s subdivisions after work and for evening rides every Sunday. Both find the rides relaxing and a fun way to wave at the neighbors.

“A lot of people take a walk,” he says. “We’d rather take a motorcycle ride.”

Court Tennis Coaches Serve Up Life Lessons for CCHS Players ARTICLE BROOKE ZIMMERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY ROBIN SIMMONS

T

he duo that makes up the Corner Canyon High School (CCHS) Tennis coaching staff provide life

lessons on character and discipline with a little bit of tennis coaching mixed in.

Head Coach of the boys’ and girls’ CCHS teams, Mykel Seeborg, was raised in Maryland and started heading to the tennis courts with his father when he was seven years old. This is when he met a man who would become his life-long friend, mentor, and--most recently-his assistant coach, Colonel Rayfel (Ray) Bachiller.

Bachiller offered to give Seeborg tennis lessons. He chopped down and re-gripped one of his racquets and gave it to Seeborg. After the first lesson, Seeborg could be found hitting tennis balls against a wall for hours.

Anytime he saw Bachiller on the courts from his condo window he raced down and waited patiently to score a match with his new friend.

Bachiller’s long history with the military includes a short stint in the Navy and a long career with the Marine Corps. He played baseball with his fellow troops before

the Marines told him he needed to pick an “individual sport,” because they “teach you to be a good leader and [that] it’s good to have something to help you stand out and develop your own confidence in competition,” says Bachiller. When he asked a Sergeant to teach him to play tennis, he was rudely denied.

Bachiller bought a book, two cans of balls, a wooden racquet, and taught himself how to play. After showing back up at the courts and winning his first match he ever played, he was welcomed on the Marine Corps team, thus beginning his long-time tennis career.

Seeborg eventually moved from Maryland to Utah to pursue a collegiate tennis career.

That’s when his life took an unexpected turn; he eventually ended up playing volleyball in college and meeting the love of his life, Lisa. “I am so appreciative of my wife because she has been such a big support and lets me do what I am passionate about,” says Seeborg. He didn’t return to his tennis roots until he had his own children and began teaching them. He fell in love all over again, but with a different element-not playing tennis, but coaching tennis.

Bachiller also moved from Maryland, transferred to multiple places around the world with the Marines before ending up in Salt Lake City to be the Deputy Commander of the Joint Task Force for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Once Bachiller landed in Utah he looked up the Seeborg family, remembering Ms. Seeborg was originally from Utah.

The two friends reconnected and Bachiller was surprised that Seeborg was now “six feet tall--a handsome, strapping young man-and was shocked to hear he still played tennis." Seeborg became one of the top juniors in the state, and "I was just so proud of him,” says Bachiller. When they finally reunited on the court, Bachiller was even more proud when Seeborg “smoked him.”

When CCHS was established in 2013 and Seeborg received the job title of Tennis Head Coach, there was only one person he wanted by his side to help him coach. “I want all of my students to meet Ray, because he was such an important part of my life. I want everybody to experience him and learn what he’s about, and have him as a figure to look up to and mimic their life around,” says Seeborg.

For Seeborg and Bachiller, coaching High School tennis has been a whole different animal than private lessons. “I want these kids to know that tennis is a great vehicle for them because they encounter all different types of people and styles of play. And to be able to figure out an opponent is one of the greatest things they can have in their life because they have to figure out different personalities in life, and be able to talk to a certain person in a different way. I think that’s one of my greatest attributes is being able to tap into a kid’s personality and figure out what can make a kid try harder,” Seeborg says.

Bachiller’s coaching and training techniques aren’t typical of many tennis coaches. First, he never expects payment, never has, never will. Second, he is known to have strict requirements regarding academic grades. Third, good manners and developing social skills is a must. He requires students maintain A’s and B’s on their report cards and that each semester they must show improvement.

“All these kids get a kick out of my coaching style but this is my way of trying to instill in them the need to have a good education. 99% of the kids I coach are never going to have a scholarship for tennis, but with a straight-A average you can just about get into any college, and sometimes get an academic scholarship,” says Bachiller.

The coaches mission is simple. They want each student to be the best people they can be, not necessarily the best tennis players, but the best people they can be. Says Bachiller, “We have a saying: 'Compete without contempt.' I want the tennis players to be aggressive and competitive but I want them to have a spirituality about winning and losing. Competition doesn’t mean the other person is your enemy, it means they are trying to do the same thing you are: win."

These men are special separately, but together, they break the mold. “When I coach tennis, especially alongside Mykel, those are some of the proudest moments of my life. I see what he’s become and I see how he sets a positive example for these young people and I watch his leadership on and off the court, and I’ve watched him as a father and it’s just given me such great joy,” says Bachiller.

Together the duo is also heading the effort to provide more tennis courts in Draper City. Draper currently has only four public tennis courts, two at Smith Fields Park and two at Steep Mountain Park. Additionally, there are zero indoor courts. During the winter, citizens of Draper are leaving the city to play at one of the closest facilities with indoor courts, Murray or Lehi. The need for an indoor tennis facility in Draper is essential, and these two are putting forth the fight to help all Draper citizens have access to indoor courts all year long.

The coaches both appreciate tennis because it is a life-long sport. You can start playing when you are a young child and you can continue to step on that court at an old age and play a match with a friend. Tennis doesn’t discriminate. Seeborg says, “Whether you’re a boy or girl, skinny or tall, purple or green, if someone wants to learn how to play tennis they can-and they can play forever."

ave Nelson and Helen Hodgson are a local couple from Draper who are members of the Intermountain Region Porsche Club of America.

The club is an active group of people who participate in driver’s education, auto crossing, club racing, social gatherings, rallying, and driving tours.

Nelson and Hodgson have owned seven--and counting--Porsches in their lifetime. They currently own two that they drive daily, even through Utah winter conditions. Nelson drives a 2003 911 Carrera 4S, with

74,000 miles, all-wheel drive and power steering. Hodgson’s car is a classic, or as she calls it a “man-magnet,” a 1984 Carrera with a Targa top and 174,000 miles.

Nelson became addicted to Porsches when he bought his first one in 1980, the Porsche 924. He has had at least one Porsche almost ever since. He says he loves Porsches because they have excellent maneuverability, and that feature alone has gotten him out of some scary situations where he has had to put his defensive driving and his car’s ability to the test, and luckily both passed.

Anthony (Tony) Hilder, who is a Brand Ambassador for Porsche at Porsche Lehi, as well as an Intermountain Region Porsche Club of America member, says, “We have a lot of people who are true to the brand. Once you drive a Porsche, you never want to drive another car; it’s really boring. Driving is a pretty mundane thing, but when you get into a Porsche it comes alive, from the sound of the motor, to the way it shifts, to the way people look at you.”

Every few months the Intermountain Region Porsche Club goes on a day or overnight road trip. As you can imagine, a lot of heads turn when 30 – 50 Porsches from all decades go driving down the road together. Road trips the club has taken have included Wendover, Antelope Island, Mirror Lake, and local breweries across the state. “I think it’s a great way for people to get acclimated with Porsche, you get to network with some really cool people, and you make some good friends,” says Hilder, who has owned 11 of his own Porsches so far.

Nelson and Hodgson’s favorite road trip in one of their Porsches has been a drive along the Oregon Coast. They also enjoy driving their Porsches down to their home in Torrey, Utah. Hodgson thoroughly enjoys cruising in the fast lane, and says her favorite thing about driving her Porsche is “how quick and small it is; the maneuverability makes it great.”

The Porsche Carrera model that Nelson and Hodgson own is the most iconic sports car ever built. The Carrera, designed in 1963, was showcased at the Geneva Auto Show and has the longest run of any vehicle from 1965 all the way through today; it just gets better and better.

While the Carrera holds the title for longest running model, Porsches best-selling vehicle is the Porsche Cayenne. “As a manufacturer if you don’t have brands and vehicles that fit everybody you go to the wayside, so we came out with the Porsche Cayenne. It’s a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) so the whole family can fit in it, and it’s a great utility vehicle. It’s the number-one-selling Porsche of all time,” says Hilder.

“As a brand, if you do not evolve correctly you lose. We stay very true to our nature in building vehicles. Porsche is

the most technologically advanced manufacturer on the planet. Everything we build is where form meets function,” says Hilder.

The Porsche brand is staying on top of technology and fuel efficiency. It has moved away from the naturally aspirated six-cylinder motors and building smaller four-cylinder turbos that give you more horse power, better performance, and are more environmentally conscientious.
