Like A Girl MAY 2017

F

ighting like a girl. Running like a girl. Throwing like a girl. I think in this day and age, we can all laugh in the face of those once-slurred notions suggesting something negative. Having two glorious and strong daughters of my own, I appreciate when things are done “like a girl.”

In “Permission to Dream,” local writer and photographer Lindsay Goeckeritz captures the hopes and dreams of refugee girls who live in our midst, and the certainty with which they seek their future. These dreams will take a lot of determination, a lot of hard work, and a lot of focus.

Qualities that another “girl” in our magazine needed too, to earn the title of the “Bouquet Slayer.” I won’t give it all away, but did you know we have a Guinness World Record holder living in our midst?! She went for her own dream—and she got it. As for all the “girls” in our May issue, there is an admirable strength in their determination that is undeniable. Maybe if we could all do things more “like a girl,” we’d all be better off.

MMEND LOCALS BURST ONTO MUSIC SCENE WITH ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE SOUND

ARTICLE BROOKE ZIMMERMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY TRESA MARTINDALE

T

ired of the mainstream music scene and the same old stuff that all sounds like a copycat on your playlists? Ready to immerse yourself in something that actually sounds original and leaves you wanting more? Good news: MMEND recently joined the

local band scene and is providing music that will get your blood pumping and is like nothing you’ve heard, guaranteeing you’ll add their songs to a couple of your playlists. Better news: MMEND is a group of local Draper residents and Alta High School graduates!

16

Draper Lifestyle | May 2017

While some people call MMEND’s sound an alternative-indie-rock type, MMEND prefers not to give their music and sound a title or category. “When we write music, we are trying to come out with a sound that people don’t know they want but it ends

BEST VIEW IN DRAPER!

up being a niche in their playlists. We don’t want to be a better version of a different artist, we want to make sure our sound is unique,” says band member, Mitchell Winter. MMEND band members include Mitchell, Mason Winter, Elise Winter, Dallin Orr and Connor Robertson. Everyone grew up with musical backgrounds and came together through a love of music. Three of the band's members are siblings and the other two are friends and Alta High School classmates. Mason and Dallin have been playing together since high school, and other band members came and went until finally Mitchell, Elise and Connor joined. The sound was made and the rest is history! But really, this is just the beginning: MMEND has a handful of awards and recorded singles and they are just getting started. MMEND won first place in Provo’s Battle of the Bands, hosted by Velour in June 2016, and The Wall’s Battle of the Bands at BYU in October 2016. Reach Provo is a music magazine in Provo City

that covered the Provo Battle of the Bands competition; they men-

tioned MMENDs live performance by saying it was “absolutely incredible” and “it felt like they were on a huge stage with thousands of people hanging on to every word.” Reach Provo also mentioned that one of the judges of Provo’s Battle of the Bands said, “I

haven’t felt this way about a Provo band’s performance since I saw Imagine Dragons here five year ago–right before they went big.” When you see MMEND live you will hear at least a few of their 10 original songs. Currently they have recorded and released two singles, which you can find on Spotify and Apple Music. They are in the process of recording a few more songs and plan to release an Extended Play (EP) with five to six songs by fall of 2017. MMEND writes, records, and performs in between their full-time school and work schedules. Band members attend BYU and UVU, as well as work full-time and part-time jobs. They actively support each other in their individual lives, but try to come together and fit as much band time in as possible. Short-term goals for MMEND include joining the Provo Rooftop Series this summer. Long-term, they hope to graduate from school and replace their jobs and income with the band full-time, which would open the doors for recording and releasing full albums and begin touring and playing at festivals. With their accomplishments and successes in the short time they have been performing together, anticipate seeing big things from MMEND! Mitchell said, “We feel really lucky that everything has fallen in line and we have been able to move to the next step when needed. The support has been amazing and helped us achieve our successes so far.” Check out their Facebook page to hear their music and find out where you can see them perform live.

DEEP DRAPER roots Landscaper Ryan Summerhays welcomes city’s growth and works to be water-wise ARTICLE MIMI DARLEY DUTTON

R

yan Summerhays grew up in Draper and remembers when the town was primarily made up of farms and horse property. He has watched the evolution of Draper from wide-open spaces to the growing city that it is today. The Summerhays family history in Draper started when his grandfather bought property in the early 50’s. Ryan's dad, city councilman Alan Summerhays, was about ten years old at the time. Ryan was drawn to the landscape business as a result of how he was raised. "I grew up on five acres. My dad had a lot of tractors and equipment and it wasn't unusual for him to volunteer my services,” he said with a chuckle, adding, “I was the ultimate boy in the sense that I loved tractors and working in the dirt.” He can recall when the current location of Starbuck's was a small airport. “Corner Canyon was our playground, before the trails were actually trails," he said. He relishes those small town memories and experiences, but he also welcomes the transformation of Draper as it’s grown. Ryan’s company motto is, “We do it right the first time, every time.” Summerhays Landscape is committed to making sure that every landscape is done right. “Every project cannot be perfect, but I will always stand behind my work and my crew,” he said. Ryan invests time in continuing education for himself and for his crew, particularly when it comes to water management and efficient water use. He states, “Water is one of our biggest commodities. We need 22

Draper Lifestyle | May 2017

to work to be better stewards of the water we have.” He is a proud member of the Irrigation Association, and states, “I am very passionate about water conservation. I feel that this is such an important aspect in the landscape community; water is life.” Volunteering time in the community is important to Ryan. In the footsteps of his dad, he serves on the city's Parks and Trails Committee, a position he was appointed to by Mayor Troy Walker. “We advocate for balance in our open space for all users. I think the parks are stellar and I would push to continue the growth of parks and trails. It is important to have places to hike, bike, and play outdoors. I like the idea of keeping our children moving and active, to be outside and off technology,” he said. One of his proudest landscape achievements is Ballard Corner Memorial Park in Draper which features a monument and bench honoring the late Sergeant Derek Johnson. "That was an honor to do. I'm glad that Draper was able to create a space in his memory. That's one of the more powerful things we've been a part of," he said. This March marked 14 years of Summerhays Landscape being in business. "Being able to work with someone and transform their yard to create what they want is part of my why. I like empowering people to use their creativity and transform their living space into something that will create memories with their family and loved ones.” Ryan feels that landscaping is often oversimplified. First, you must consider

Microclimates can change from neighborhood to neighborhood as well as different parts of your own yard. There is also an extensive amount of knowledge that goes into the architecture of plant design. “Landscapers keep things alive like doctors and vets, you have to have the knowledge base and then be able to assess what will thrive rather than just live. It’s not just a matter of planting trees and putting sprinklers in the ground,” he said. Summerhays Landscape services the entire Wasatch Front with commercial and residential landscaping and maintenance. This includes sprinkler systems and repair, planting, hardscapes such as patios and water features. During winter they provide snow removal services to commercial clients.

I quickly realized how big their dreams are. After finishing up for the day I considered all that had been shared with me. A local leader recently posed the question, “What if their story were my story?” I started wondering, “What if this

need from a new community where everything from the language and dress to the educational expectations was foreign to me? It’s simple. I would want--and need--kind-
