TAKE A PEEK INSIDE SOME OF DRAPER'S ICONIC HOUSES UPDATED CURB APPEAL: BEFORE & AFTER DL TRANSFORMATION CHALLENGE WINNERS

Š2017 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times. Optional equipment shown is extra.

It has a long, distinguished history of making history. That history, of course, is an insatiable desire to outdo ourselves. Which is why with every model comes a new challenge. This example of one-upmanship is the 911 Turbo. Specifically, a remarkable new engine that increases displacement to 3.8 liters. Giving the driver greater torque, not to mention more immediate usable power. And it does so while using less fuel. Then there's the 500 unyielding horsepower, top track speed of 194 mph and split-second shifting with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). In other words, our legendary status is still very much intact. Porsche. There is no substitute.

Making Home Sweet

W

e are a house of forts, with an apparent abundance of building materials found in anything not nailed down.

The cushions never stay on the chairs, the throw pillows never stay in the nooks of the couches, and the blankets are always draped over something or other. And all of it fashioned into a space created by my six-year-old—a space all his own. He does this on the daily and I let him… even while feeling—in my ordered, grown-up heart—super annoyed to live in a state of chaotic detritus. But it’s the feeling that it places in him—in his little, present, forging heart—that makes me give in, as he builds and carves out a place that feels just right, just to him.

Because on some level, don’t we all crave this? A place that feels just right, just to us? In this issue we see the handiwork of locals, as they find and create places that feel right to them. Jennifer Harris shows off some of their remodeled homes; Linnea Lundgren gives us a peek into some of Draper’s historic homes; and Mimi Darley Dutton outlines Ron Austin’s multi-city journey to find a new place that feels like home. We’re lucky that home is Draper. To be completely honest, my favorite place in my house is my bed. It feels just right to me-adorned in down, fluffy and squishy the way I like it. If you’re like me in this regard, or your kids are, we even have something for you. Children’s Book Reviewer Holly Newton outlines some of the best children’s books for bedtime… I might just grab that busy fort-building six-year-old and make him sit still and read with me for a bit. I’m feeling sleepy already.

STUDENTS SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT CHARCOT ARTHROPATHY By Haylie DeMercy and Emma Sidel--president and co-president of HOSA (Future Health Professionals) at Corner Canyon High School--who are working on an awareness project that educates the community on Charcot Arthropathy, a rare disease that effects 6% of Utah's population. Charcot Arthropathy, also known as Charcot Foot, is a progressive neurological disease of weight bearing joints, but mainly affects lower extremities. Walking on a joint suffering from Charcot greatly increases the chance of fractures and dislocations. Charcot foot occurs in patients with neuropathy resulting from diverse conditions including diabetes mellitus, leprosy, and other diseases. Charcot patients are often misdiagnosed or are left waiting years before they receive a proper diagnosis. Symptoms of Charcot foot include redness, swelling, pain, fractures, dislocations, deformities and instability--which causes most patients to become wheelchair dependent or have an amputation. This disease also affects people emotionally--through isolation, depression and the loss of independence. Because it is an invisible disease--something that people can’t identify--many patients are constantly questioned about their need for handicap spaces or wheelchairs. After interviewing several people, we learned that one of the biggest hurdles Charcot survivors face is judgement in their community. Kristy DeMercy, a Draper resident with Charcot states,“I have an invisible disease that cripples my life greatly. If I was in a cast people would have no judgement--but because I don't, people don't think there is anything wrong with me.” By spreading awareness and expressing the difficulties that a Charcot survivor faces, we hope to create a more supportive and knowledgeable community. There is no cure for Charcot Foot, however, by making our city aware, we hope to encourage kindness and positivity. March 2017 | Draper Lifestyle

and commercials in his studio that he likens to a scientific lab. But Austin’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. The time he spent on computers, reading and studying coding, resulted in a visual condition called Keratoconus that left Austin legally blind one and a half years ago. He persevered and completed his bachelor’s degree. Ron’s wife, Leslie, was raised in Utah and the two talked about moving back with their young children. Ron recalls being in Arizona and seeing a television report with Leslie that indicated Utah was strong in education. “I remember it specifically, we looked at each other…we really wanted our children to have the best education,” he said. He’d heard of Utah’s Silicon Slopes, and that appealed to the IT graduate, so the family of four made the move to Sandy. Upon arriving in Utah, Austin found work as a custodian at Corner Canyon High School. It’s a job he’s truly enjoyed. “It’s fun being around the kids; they’re really funny. Being there you can’t help regress in age and almost experience high school again,” he said. “I’d like to give a shout out to Corner Canyon, I love it there. The school is awesome, the way they’ve changed education--it’s hands-on…to see this type of curriculum for kids, it’s just incredible,” Austin said. Meanwhile, Austin found an eye doctor who helped restore his vision to nearly 20/20 with contacts. “The day I got the contacts… we were going east. To be able to see the mountains, the definition, the crevices, the different lighting, the snow--it was breathtaking. It was like having special HD vision, picturesque in every way,” he said. While Austin’s actual vision was severely clouded until recently, his

vision of a multi-faceted life journey remains clear. He finds himself at a crossroads career-wise, with talents and skills that could lead down different paths, particularly now that his vision is restored. He loves his job, but IT careers also appeal to him, not to mention his music interests. “Having to make the decision on what would be the best thing to do, that’s the very dilemma at this moment, trying to get to the next level of success,” he said.

Historical homes have their quirks. Still, they also have personality and spirit, and that’s what Laura and her family love about their 119-year-old home.

FROM TOP LEFT:

“It has a happy feeling,” she says.

The Antone Nielson home, circa 1898, is framed by two matrimony trees representing husband and wife, a common cultural trend a century ago.

She attributes much of it to the home’s original family. Antone Nielson, one of Draper’s prominent sheep ranch owners, built the home and raised crops and livestock to supply food to his ranches. The family also gave generously to the needy in the

ARTICLE HOLLY NEWTON eading out loud to youngsters at bedtime will build memories for a lifetime. Furthermore, selecting great books that will entice children, along with settling them

For older kids, reading great chapter book page-turners should do the trick (although they won't want you to stop reading).
