ublishing lead times mean that as I write this, the leaves are almost finished falling but the sun is still shining and the sky is a brilliant cloudless blue. It is, quite frankly, just gorgeous.

I know this sky exists in January, but sometimes it’s hard to see.

That often-gunky inversion coupled with the post-holidays hangover and the next thing to look forward to as far off as spring break can make this time of year especially hard to cope with and downright dreary. This issue is our attempt at an antidote to that, our attempt at a bright spot: a bit of sunshine, a bit of blue sky, a bit of hope and motivation.

What does “Wellness” mean to you? How do you achieve it?

These are questions we posed to people in our community who are striving for that balance—striving to be whole and feel their best—mind, body and spirit.

For me, wellness is achieved by getting outside every day, no matter the weather. Heading up the mountains (up and out of the inversion) I seem to hike up and out of every possible bad thing that might bog me down. And nothing is better for my heart than stepping into a bona fide winter wonderland. When people are surprised at how often I hike in the snow, I always reply that the snowy wilderness is closer than it looks, and that the trails are easier to navigate than you think.. all it takes is that first step.

And maybe that's true about all things in January—that though the first step along a new path in the new year might seem daunting, it's true that you can do it. It's with this in mind that Draper Lifestyle and several trainers from businesses around our community are launching a "New Year, New You" fitness program. We will be selecting participants to work with professionals for 90 days and we will record it in the magazine for the whole community to be inspired by. The fun starts on page 22.

This issue also showcases some sunshiney feel-good stories, from the high profile Alex Boye to a band of behind the scenes angels—ladies hard at work on some really impressive “girl power.” They are all people who make our little town—and the world at large—a brighter place to be.

Finally, when the dreary indoor doldrums seem too much to bear, head out this winter with a fun way to warm up. Three local high schoolers—from each of the different high schools in our community—lead the way on page 34.

Taylor Dunn Dahl, age 24, may be the newest head varsity coach for Corner Canyon Girls Lacrosse, but she is a long-time resident of Draper.

n 2010 she graduated from Alta High School where she lettered in lacrosse all four years. While growing up, Dahl tried almost every sport, but when she entered high school, she "dropped all sports at the competitive level” to play lacrosse. She was a four time All-American, four time All-State, one time

Academic All-American, League Defensive MVP, was named West Side Lacrosse's Utah Female Player of the Year and her team won back to back state championships.

With a full-tuition scholarship, Dahl attended BYU where she played lacrosse as a freshman and then at the University of Utah

for the next three years. She says she still loves both teams! During college, Dahl was a four time All-American, WCLA Midfield Player of the Year and played in the 2013 Nationals All-Tournament. In 2013, Dahl married her husband, Alex and they have an adorable 15 month-old son, named Ethan.

Dahl has one year left of school and hopes to eventually receive her bachelor's in Exercise Science and a minor in Nutrition.

In 2015, Dahl was a JV/assistant varsity coach for Corner Canyon Girls Lacrosse and is now the head varsity coach. She is very committed to the program and hasn't let her role as a mother keep her away from coaching. "My mom, mom-in-law and sister have been amazing. They all live nearby and have stepped in to help out so I can coach without worrying about my little guy. I love them! They have made this opportunity a possibility and a joy for me."

Dahl's goal for the program is to have "stable and competitive growth," to "create a positive team environment" and to eventually win a state championship. "My coaching philosophy is to create a passion for the game through hard work, integrity, and respect," says Dahl.

In the short time she has been with Corner Canyon Girls Lacrosse, Dahl has without a doubt had a positive impact on the program. "The girls love her, respond well to her and I am excited to see what she can do with our program," said one lacrosse parent. Sam Pensari, sophomore, says "Coach 'T' listens to our suggestions about what we want to work on. She helps us become better athletes." Maren Holmberg, junior, agrees and adds, "What I like most about her is that she is funny and very straight forward."

So why play lacrosse? Dahl's answer is that lacrosse is a "fun...and empowering sport....

It teaches physical speed and agility, mental strength and quickness...and best of all, it brings you in contact with an incredible group of girls." Player Sam Pensari also says that “Lacrosse is fun, easy to pick up, creates good relationships and did I say it is fun? Plus it gets your body ready for summer!" Dahl says that "The earlier you start playing lacrosse, the better, but even at the high school level, we can find a place for you to begin." Draper resident and avid cyclist Christian Sybrowsky, M.D., provides insight on what to expect from a fat bike and why it is such a trend.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A FIRST TIME FAT BIKE RIDER?

“First thing: if you are riding in the winter, be sure to dress warmly! There is nothing worse than being stuck in the canyon without enough layers! Invest in a good pair of winter biking shoes and wear warm socks. I will frequently put disposable toe warmers in my riding shoes to keep my toes warm. In addition, if your fingers get too cold, it is difficult to pull your brake levers or shift gears quickly. Invest in a good set of dedicated winter cycling gloves to avoid the risk of a crash!”

“Another tricky thing about biking in the winter is that the snow conditions will either make or break your ride. The best time to ride is when the snow is hard-packed and cold.

Morning is an excellent time to ride because in Utah, the sun will often heat up the snow later in the day and make it a bit slushy. Which in turn makes it difficult to keep traction and 18

L

ast August, when Val Bunting traveled to Tanzania, she brought a small suitcase full of clothes and a large one filled with simple solutions for girl empowerment.

That large suitcase held 40 Days for Girls kits. The colorful kits are part of the Days for Girls project, an international effort to make and supply quality, sustainable, feminine hygiene products to girls in Third World countries, which allows them to attend school during their menstrual cycle.

“These kits are one small way for girls in these countries to break out of a vicious cycle,” said Bunting, a Draper resident who regularly volunteers with the Draper Days for Girls team.

Religious and cultural factors, atop ignorance and the inaccessibility of feminine hygiene products blend, together to turn girls into outcasts during their menstrual cycle. Girls miss out on four to five days of school each month. Most fall behind and many drop out.

Alone, girls sit or squat on dirt floors using banana leaves, cardboard, dried cow dung, or cornhusks for padding. Most have no idea why they bleed.

Many think they have AIDS. “If they are lucky enough they’ll have a friend or family member who brings them something to eat,” said Bunting. “They aren’t allowed to go out on their own.”

On her humanitarian trip, Bunting, 65, taught English and helped pour cement for school buildings. She gave the schoolgirls, as well as their female teachers, the kits, taught them how to use the kits, and taught the teachers how to educate other girls.

When presented with the kits, the young girls’ eyes filled with tears, she recalled.

“They thought it was a miracle because now they didn’t have to miss any school.”

Each Days for Girls kit contains a washcloth, two pairs of underwear, two zip-lock freezer bags, a bar of soap, a waterproof shield for the underwear and eight absorbent flannel liners. These liners slip inside the shield, which snaps to the underside of the underwear—all included in a drawstring bag that resembles a purse.

The girls can carry the items undetected and can wash the liners, using soap, the zip-lock bag and water. The bright patterns camouflage blood stains allowing girls to hang the liners out to dry.

“It is life-changing,” Bunting said. “These girls love school. They walk miles to attend.

Education is the only way to get somewhere.”

In another step toward empowerment, Days for Girls sets up cottage industries where girls and women can make their own kits. “It becomes an inside job,” Bunting said, “and that is all part of the self sufficiency.”

Bunting plans another humanitarian trip to Africa and will again fill her largest suitcase with as many kits possible.

“I started volunteering with Days for Girls in Draper because it was something I could do, but the importance of it didn’t hit me until I went over there,” she said.

“We get so caught up in our lives, we are so insulated here, that you don’t understand what having these kits is like for these girls until you go over there and see it for yourself.”

The Draper team of Days for Girls meets the third Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Steeplechase Ward House, 13350 S. 1750 East. The group is nondenominational, nonprofit and volunteer led.

They are currently looking for a business to donate space for a permanent place to work and store materials, said Days for Girls team organizer Julie Murray. “That way we can meet more often to make the kits and be more accessible,” she said.

Murray said volunteers can cut fabric, trace patterns, sew or serge, and assemble kits. Monetary donations as well as donations of travel-sized soap, zip-lock freezer bags, fabric (cotton and flannel) and girls’ underwear are always welcome.
