Flex Fitness Supports Pit Bull Rescue for K9 Efforts Flex Fitness recently spearheaded the first pit bull narcotics K9 to be sworn in for the state of Alabama. Alabama now becomes the fourth state to feature a pit bull as a police dog. Flex Fitness is a local gym located in Freeport and Crestview, and helps sponsor bully breed dogs. They have rescued more than 400 bullies in the last 4 years.

A Timeless Dish with a View

There’s one dish on the menu at Marina Café that customers order, four times more than any other item on the extensive dinner menu. And, it’s been on the menu for decades so you’ve likely enjoyed the pan-seared andouille crusted Louisiana redfish if you’ve dined there. “It’s our most sold dish, a summer favorite and go-to for locals and visitors alike,” says Lee Pardue, director of operations for Marina Café, with a priceless location on Destin Harbor. Executive chef Sean Abbott continues the 33-year traditions, adding his flare for fine dining to the menu while preserving dishes from the restaurant’s history. Judy Altilio has been the office manager for nearly 20 years and you’ve likely talked to her when making a reservation, which are strongly suggested well in advance. “Though every seat on our two-levels has a window view of our beautiful Destin Harbor and sunsets, so there’s no undesirable table!” says Judy. Regulars know about the year-round happy hour from 5 pm - 7 pm, with half price drinks, appetizer and sushi specials and BOGO entrées. “The buy-one-getone meals - steak notwithstanding, are a great way to work through the menu and sample different dishes,” promises Lee. Marina Café’s Chef Shaun Abbott finds inspiration in the view, too. “Every time I walk thru the dining room and look out over the Gulf of Mexico, I think to myself ‘there isn’t any other place in the world I would rather be, doing what I love, than right here,’” he says. “Since joining the team at Marina Café, life has been amazing! I have established a true sense of home within the company and with my coworkers and guests.” Destin draws people from all across the country and around the world who seek relaxation and a good time. “I enjoy being able to offer our guest that and some good cuisine to make their experience in Destin and at Marina Café truly memorable,” says Chef Sean. The Marina Flirtini is the glamorous star of the show from the bar. Plus, Marina Café’s wine list is one of the most extensive in Destin with nearly 200 choices in the restaurant’s wine cellar. SHOWTIME, WITH A HEART 2022 MKAF FALL FLIX | CULTURAL ARTS VILLAGE | DESTIN Next month, the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) kicks off the 2022 Fall season with Fall Flix, a brand new series of family-friendly movies on the Village Green beginning with The Wizard of Oz. Additional Fall events include the highly-anticipated Destin Festival of the Arts held the weekend of October 29 and 30 at the MKAF Cultural Arts Village and the 10th Annual Ruth’s Chris Wine Walkabout.

The Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) is a non-profit arts organization comprised of members, volunteers, and community partners building the foundation of arts and culture in the community. Since its inception in 1995, MKAF has inspired more than 337,800 children in over 75 schools and partner agencies. Through its community education initiatives ArtsReach, programming serves

K-12 students, at-risk youth, people with disabilities, and the military population with visible and invisible injuries. As a presenting organization, MKAF has showcased its Concerts in the Village each season where the Southeast United States’ most vibrant performing artists and bands perform to more than 15,000 patrons annually. Marisol Gullo spends much of her time working on designing interior spaces for her clients, that is, when she isn’t designing and building custom furniture for her stores. We wanted to catch up with her and ask her about her interior design process. MG: The most important part of the process for me is a big one, which is often overlooked, and that is to listen to my clients. Although they have sought me out for my professional insight on their space, it still remains their home. I like to spend time with my clients and get to know them. It is important to find out what they do and do not like. It’s quite an intimate process really, many of my clients have become close friends because of this working process. Balance and Rhythm. I can’t stress that enough. It’s very important that the house or space has a continuous flow. I want there to be a continuation of the theme of the home that flows from room to room. When you have too many contrasting themes going on in a home it can tend to look like a funhouse. So the balance and the rhythm must be kept at the forefront at all times. Which brings me to my next point, conceptual development and focal points. Maybe you have a beautiful waterfront home, and if this is the case, then you want to bring to the inside, the natural beauty of the outside. Although I like to use a good bit of neutral colors for my base, if your focal point is on the magnificent ocean views, then you want to engage that, and bring in some pops of those beautiful and soothing blues, emerald, turquoises, colors which in turn gives you balance and rhythm.
It was all starting to make some sense to me now, I was starting to see her blueprint. So I asked Marisol what else she felt was important for her. MG: Proportion and scale. This is as equally important as any of the other implementations that we have discussed. Sometimes I have to put my mathematicians hat on to make sure what we are placing will fit. That part can get quite technical, although your eye can quite easily identify when something doesn’t look right or is out of place. But these mistakes can be costly and very time consuming especially when merchandise now takes as long as it does to arrive. So if your do not own a tape measure, get one, it can be your most valuable ally. Anything Else? MG: Well I guess it would be full circle then because we are back to the beginning.
