In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. Destin is known for its white sand beaches that look like sugar spilling from the pine forests into emerald-green waters. As distinctive as this is, the area’s most striking feature is its people. In this important issue of Destin City Lifestyle, Dion highlights the giving character of this city and its surrounding communities. He is fully engaged with his real estate and business law practice as a Partner at Hand Arendall Harrison Sale; and as President of Emerald Coast Title Services. But giving back to the community that welcomed him is a priority for Dion. He encourages all of our readers to find a way to get involved in growing this community. Let’s look at a few opportunities. For starters, Dion's law firm is sponsoring the 10th Annual Destin Chamber's Bourbon at the Bay event, as they have for several years. He was a recipient of their Business Person of the Year Award in 2020 and their Ann Gibson Community Service Award in 2017. A past Chairman of the Destin Chamber, Dion continues to support their work in the business community. Dion also serves with the Rotary Club of Destin. Dion is a Past-President of this organization which has a goal to further education and eradicate hunger in the local community with initiatives such as Food for Thought, Harvest House, the Boys and Girls Club, Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) and others. They also award an annual $10,000 scholarship to a graduating senior. During Dion’s presidential

year, the Club was awarded Mid-Size Club of the Year for their relief efforts after Hurricane Michael and numerous other service projects they performed that year. Dion now serves as Chairman of Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation. MKAF activities include everything from an annual Festival of the Arts, to camps and workshops for children, therapeutic art for veterans, and sponsoring live musical performances at Concerts in the Villages. The Emerald Coast is a woven fabric, textured with song and color, thanks to Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation. Dion also highlights the work of Aletha’s Legacy, where he serves as Vice President. This local organization is renovating an elementary school and an orphanage in Monrovia, Liberia (Africa). It is a wonderful bridge from Destin to another part of the world, spreading a message of “…hope for the future to the children of Liberia by providing quality education in a safe environment”. Dion is also a founding board member of the Ellison McCraney Ingram Foundation which has pledged to award up to $200,000 in scholarships next year to deserving children in the community; a member of All Sports Association which supports local youth sports programs; and a member of 100 Men Who Care Emerald Coast. There is a worthy non-profit waiting to welcome you to partner with them to preserve Destin’s culture of giving!

One Tree At a Time BOBBY WAGNER INTRODUCES TREES ON THE COAST

The humble name Trees on the Coast hides the fact that this organization does so much more than planting trees. I learned from its director Bobby Wagner that they started out planting trees and educating students in local schools about environmental topics. Before long, volunteers were going into the water to remove trash. Then, they formed partnerships to complete a beach nourishment project. The thing is, planting a tree, like many other simple starts, is only an opening. It builds a bond between person and place. It leads to ideas, opportunities, and relationships that continue to make a lasting change to our coastal landscape. Bobby’s story is not much different than the organization that he leads. Each step he took seemed to open the door to more opportunities. He attended Troy University, majoring in Music Education. CONTINUED >

However, his interest in video production led to an internship. He returned to the Emerald Coast to take a job and soon founded Land Air Sea Productions. He started volunteering video services and fundraising, which led to his becoming the Historian for Trees on the Coast - “the guy with the camera”! When the founder Allen French left in 2020, Bobby took the helm of Trees on the Coast. As Director, he’s had to work with cities and municipalities. He’s learned what a huge impact our local politicians have on the quality of life we all experience here. That’s led him to seek an opportunity to serve Destin as mayor. If he succeeds, he will be Destin’s youngest to date. He loves to share his journey as an aspiring band director turned non-profit Director to encourage anyone who wants to join Trees on the Coast. You don’t need to specialize in environmental studies to have a big impact on this beautiful area! There are many ways to get involved. One important group is the sponsors and donors who supply the trees. Historically, Trees on the Coast will raise

$1,500-$2,000 per school. They plant live oak and long leaf pine to revive native plant life. Keep your eye out for their projects planned in partnership with the state and Department of Environmental Protection to nourish beaches and the bay front. You can support efforts to improve public access to nature through beach buybacks, upgrades to ramps and piers, and the Mattie Kelley Nature Park. The Honor Tree Program, offered by Trees on the Coast, is a way for anyone to make a permanent investment in this area by memorializing a significant event (birth, graduation, death, etc.) with a tree. Bobby loves that it allows both locals and visitors to connect to our area. The money also funds planting another tree somewhere else. Often, the second tree lands at a school. Bobby shared some final thoughts on the community that makes Trees on the Coast possible. ‘There’s so much opportunity here and the opportunity comes from our community.’ This community is full of wonderful people to build relationships with. For this issue, we searched for a beautiful home with a beautiful bar. 364 Walton Way in Miramar Beach was an easy choice because it brings the atmosphere of a neighborhood pub into a home game room. The bar sits inside a luxury villa with a Mediterranean style. This waterfront retreat showcases artisanship. In this article, owner Yon Burton gives us a glimpse into her sprawling bayside home. Its restful atmosphere inside is reinforced by over an acre of landscaping that accents native plantings with lush grass, winding walkways, and a dock reaching out over the Choctawhatchee Bay. A custom stonework fountain graces the front of the home. Concentric oval walls hold crystal clear water and statuary. Mature olive trees complete the Mediterranean feel. Entering the home, a grand staircase and a clear view straight through to the bay beyond takes the viewer's breath away.

This property has been carefully designed to capture the magical sunrises and sunsets on Choctawhatchee Bay. Extensively remodeled about 15 years ago, it has expanded to a sprawling 8,500 square feet of living area. This includes a closed in patio that calls to visitors to gather around for barbecue or to chat amiably over a glass of wine from the patio’s chiller. Their answer to that call is rewarded with a view of an expanse of water alive with dolphins, heron, jumping fish, and a visiting fish hawk. Another expansion is a sitting area with a view in the primary suite. The bar and game room is situated upstairs and showcases rich woodwork preserved with perfect satin finishes. Details are hand-carved into

a well-appointed bar. Each bar stool is backed by a fabric scene of a pool game from another era, inviting visitors to a friendly game of pool and heightening the overall impression of luxury. The ample game room is vast enough for lush seating to fit easily and the windows offer pleasing views. Though many features remain, we’ll end on the aquamarine pool, complete with jacuzzi. It is surrounded by careful marble flooring and pedestals, complementary decor, and the home’s grand brickwork. Large openings in the brickwork frame the natural scenery beyond. The level of opulence in this home truly transports a person to another place and time. CONTINUED >

Walton County has repeatedly broken home sales records, especially in recent years. This steep increase in property values continues to drive housing costs higher and higher, while forcing workers ever further away. Results include workforce shortages, stress on working families, commuter traffic, and higher prices for all consumers. Teresa Jones, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Walton County, works tirelessly to manage the housing crisis and offers multiple opportunities for our entire community to participate. Their mission: bring people together to build homes, community, and hope. For those of us who want to be hands on, Habitat welcomes you to volunteer at a build site. Habitat aims to finish their 60th home before Christmas of 2022 and emphasizes that the homes represent a helping hand, not a handout! Each home is purchased by a local homeowner who pays mortgage costs, insurance, taxes, and invests 250 hours of sweat equity. It is volunteer labor, donated materials and vendor services that shrink costs - making the homes more affordable.

The Walton County Habitat ReStore & Donation Center has volunteer opportunities too. Teresa reminded me, ‘Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We truly could not run without volunteers.' Donors can give home goods and construction materials to the new Habitat ReStore in Santa Rosa Beach. In its first year, this store impacted more than 18,000 families. The reduced prices for home goods help offset rising costs of home ownership. ReStore sales pay for all of Habitat’s operating costs in Walton County. The reduced price for home goods counters the rising cost of home ownership. Finally, as if that wasn’t enough good news, 115,000 pieces of construction materials have been diverted from a local landfill this year thanks to our local Habitat ReStore! Finally, Habitat Walton County hosts events throughout the year - fundraisers, skill workshops, and more. On November 29th, Habitat Walton County will accept donations for Giving Tuesday. On Thursday, December 1st, they will host the Walton Area Chamber’s Business After Hours. On Friday, February 10th, Habitat will host their 5th Annual Hard Hats & High Heels at the Hilton Sandestin which benefits their Women Build 2023 initiative.
