Style tells a story long before we ever say a word. It lives in the homes we create, the music we turn up in the car, the books on our nightstands, and the outfits that make us feel most like ourselves. It may be the first impression we make, but more importantly, it reflects the experiences, passions, and values that shape who we are. The best part? It isn't about following trends or fitting into someone else's idea of what's beautiful. It's about authenticity. It evolves alongside us, changing with every chapter of life while remaining uniquely our own. No two people express themselves in exactly the same way, and that's what makes personal style so fascinating. One of my favorite things about our community is the incredible creativity that surrounds us. From locally owned boutiques and talented designers to artists, makers, and entrepreneurs bringing their visions to life, the Denville area is filled with people who remind us that style comes in countless forms. Their creativity doesn't just make our community more vibrant—it inspires all of us to embrace what makes us unique. As you flip through this month's issue, I hope you're inspired to try something new, revisit something you've always loved, or simply appreciate the many ways people choose to express themselves. Because the most memorable style isn't the loudest or the trendiest—it's the one that's unmistakably yours. One of the greatest privileges of creating Denville City Lifestyle is meeting the people who make our community so special. Their creativity, passion, and generosity in sharing their stories are what help define the Denville area as such a wonderful place to call home. If you have a story, milestone, or local business you'd like us to feature, don't hesitate to reach out. We'd love to celebrate it with you. Some stories, however, stay with us long after the magazine has been delivered. Last month, we were heartbroken to learn of Mac’s passing. It was an honor to share his story with our readers, and his joyful spirit will always be remembered. He brought smiles wherever he went and will forever hold a special place in our hearts. We’re sending our love to everyone who loved him during this incredibly difficult time. For more local highlights and behind-the-scenes moments, follow us on Instagram @DenvilleCityLifestyle. Here's to confidence, creativity, and celebrating the story only you can tell.

In celebration of our “Style” issue, we’re excited to feature Munson as Denville City Lifestyle’s Pet of the Month for September. Munson, a soon-to-be 2-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, celebrates his second birthday on September 28. His owners brought him home from Pennsylvania just days before Christmas in 2024. Today, he's a familiar face around downtown Denville and loves visiting Diamond Spring Brewery, where he's always happy to greet new people and dogs. Named after legendary Yankees catcher Thurman Munson, he's a die-hard Yankees fan himself. If you see him around town, be sure to say hi!

Some boutiques sell clothes. Others sell gifts. Sisters has spent more than a decade helping people celebrate life’s biggest moments. Whether they’re shopping for a birthday, a new home, or a last-minute vacation outfit, customers know they’ll leave with something meaningful—and a conversation to go with it. That sense of connection is exactly what owner Meg Olenowski hoped to create. “We wanted people to come in and feel like they were family and like they were at home—just like a real girl’s girl kind of store,” she said. The story behind Sisters began long before the boutique opened its doors. In 2000, Meg’s mother, Kathy, purchased Surprises in Store, one of her favorite shops in downtown Denville. For years, she built the business into a beloved local destination. Then, in 2011, after a brief battle with cancer, she passed away, leaving Meg and her sister Cait with a difficult decision. “We said, ‘Let’s run it for a couple months and we’ll see how it goes,’” Meg recalled. “It was our first time working retail, and we instantly fell in love with it.” Not long afterward, they purchased the building next door and opened Sisters in 2013. The name honors both their relationship and Surprises in Store by preserving the familiar “SIS.” When the pandemic arrived, the two stores were combined into one, creating the Sisters that customers know today. “We really wanted to be a place for everyone,” Meg said. “You can always get a gift for any occasion or an outfit if you’re in a pinch for date night.” CONTINUED >

Today, customers visit Sisters for everything from everyday outfits to thoughtful gifts for life’s special moments. Keeping those shelves stocked with fresh finds is no small task. As Sisters’ primary buyer, Meg travels nationwide searching for brands that fit the store’s style. “Everybody really has input,” she said. “Even our high school and college girls. If they see a cool brand, I want to know about it.” That collaboration helps Sisters appeal to shoppers of every generation, whether they’re shopping for themselves or someone else. “We really do strive for gifts for every occasion,” Meg said. “Birthdays, retirements, new homes—we just love to celebrate people and make them feel good about themselves.” For Meg, the boutique has always been about more than retail. Sisters partners with local makers and frequently collaborates with fellow downtown businesses. Meg credits Denville’s business owners for creating an environment where everyone genuinely wants to see each other succeed. “Community is huge,” she said. “We’re all happy to help each other out.”
“We wanted people to come in and feel like they were family.” That spirit is best reflected in Pink Witches Night Out, the annual fundraiser Meg helped launch in 2012 after losing her mother to cancer and learning that another local family was facing the same diagnosis. This year’s event will be held on October 16. What began as a small fundraiser has grown into one of downtown Denville’s signature traditions, raising approximately $85,000 last year alone. “It’s been amazing watching businesses and the community really make the event their own,” Meg said. “The amount of money we’ve been able to raise and the amount of people we’ve been able to help is incredible.” After more than a decade, Meg says Sisters wouldn’t be what it is today without longtime team members Jess Van Eck, Colleen Argintar, and Nancy Green, each of whom has been with the boutique for more than 12 years. Together, they’ve created exactly what Meg envisioned—a place where shopping feels personal, neighbors become friends, and everyone is treated like family. Sisters is located at 23 Broadway in Denville.

Long after memories begin to fade, tattoos remain. That’s what makes the work of Denville resident Trent Charilas so meaningful. Inside his Randolph studio, Expressive Ink, he transforms skin into a lasting canvas for the moments, people, and experiences his clients never want to forget. The stigma surrounding tattoos has largely disappeared. Once viewed as rebellious or unconventional, tattoos have become a common form of self-expression embraced by people from all walks of life. “Television shows like Miami Ink really brought respect to the industry as an art form,” Charilas explained. “In the past, there was a stigma attached to tattoos. People would negatively view them and sometimes associate tattoos with gangs, bikers, or people in prison.” While he isn’t a fan of tattoo reality shows, Charilas credits them with broadening public appreciation for tattooing and introducing the artistry behind the craft to a wider audience. “It’s a win all around,” he said. Over the course of his career, Charilas estimates he has created hundreds of thousands of designs for clients spanning multiple generations. Among the most memorable was an 85-year-old woman who came in for a nose piercing and left with a rosebud tattoo on her ankle. “This older woman came in with her niece, and I just assumed they were there for her,” he recalled. “Then the niece turned to me and said, ‘I’m here for my aunt.’” Before the appointment was over, Charilas joked that she’d be the talk of her retirement community.
“She turned to me and said, ‘In my day, you’d be called a flirt if you had a tattoo,’” he said with a chuckle. Her story perfectly captures how dramatically attitudes toward tattoos have changed. Today, many clients choose tattoos to honor loved ones, commemorate important moments, or tell their own stories. Over the years, Charilas has seen just about every tattoo request imaginable. “If people come in with an idea or reference photo, I’ll read up on it to get into their head a little more,” he said. “Other people will say, ‘I trust you—just do your thing.’” No matter the design, originality is nonnegotiable. “We don’t replicate the work of others,” Charilas said. “If someone comes in with a picture from online or another shop, we’ll recreate the concept in our own unique way.” Milestone birthdays are among his most common requests, particularly from women celebrating turning 50 and beyond. Others seek tattoos honoring their heritage through flags, cultural symbols, and spiritual imagery. “I’ve done so many flags,” he said. “American, Italian, Greek. Right now I’m working on a Macedonian-themed warrior.” Nostalgia is another driving force behind many requests. Cartoon-inspired tattoos featuring The Simpsons, Disney characters, and Looney Tunes remain perennial favorites. Tributes to beloved pets are another popular choice, from pawprints and nose prints to names honoring faithful companions. Some ideas are far more unconventional. CONTINUED >

“Maybe it’s something super important t o s o m e o n e l i k e a p o r t r a i t o f a fa m i l y m e m b e r. I t ’ s a l w a y s t h a t o n e p e r c e n t t h a t keeps me up at night...but the finished p r o d u c t i s v a l i d a t i n g .” One client asked Charilas to tattoo Dave Matthews’ autograph after getting the musician to sign his arm. “A guy got him to sign his arm and called me at 2 a.m.,” he recalled. “It was totally on a whim.” For Charilas, those one-of-a-kind projects are part of the appeal. The more challenging the design, the more rewarding the finished piece. “The designs that stress me out the most are also the most rewarding,” he said. “Maybe it’s something super important to someone like a portrait of a family member. It’s always that one percent that keeps me up at night...but the finished product is validating.” Not every tattoo request gets a green light. Charilas will refuse any gang-related or hate-related tattoo and has also talked clients out of certain designs— particularly young couples eager to tattoo each other’s names. “It’s just bad luck,” he said. “It’s the kiss of death.” Couples who have been married for decades, however, are another story. Over the years, Charilas has built his business one tattoo at a time, fueled by satisfied clients and countless word-of-mouth recommendations. “For every new client I get, I fully expect to gain three more clients,” he said. Whether he’s preserving a musician’s autograph, creating a deeply personal tribute, or helping someone commemorate an important moment, Charilas understands that the best tattoos are never just about the artwork. They’re about the stories people choose to carry for a lifetime. Expressive Ink is located at 517 NJ-10 in Randolph.

T HE C A NDID A P P R OAC H JULIAN GARCIA CAPTURES TIMELESS PHOTOGRAPHS BY EMBRACING AUTHENTICITY.

Natural poses. Limited touch-ups. No filters. That’s how photographer Julian Garcia prefers to work. “I like to focus on the moment and the photo itself,” he said. “That’s the most important thing.” The more candid the photograph, the better. His philosophy reflects a broader shift in photography as people increasingly value authentic, unfiltered imagery over carefully curated perfection. In an era of artificial intelligence, edited images, and endless social media filters, people have grown more skeptical of what they see—and more appreciative of photographs that capture life as it unfolds.
Long before candid photography became a trend, Garcia developed that instinct while photographing wildlife, where nothing can be staged. “You want to present as you are,” he said. “This is you. This is your family. This is how you actually look.” That isn’t to say he’s opposed to editing. He simply prefers capturing life as it happens, often with nature serving as the backdrop. “The sky adds drama to pictures, and so does water,” he said. “For example, taking family photos outdoors adds another layer of beauty to it.” Rather than directing every pose, he works quietly behind the scenes, allowing genuine interactions to unfold naturally. “If somebody has an engagement session or a small wedding party, it’s important to maybe show people walking through a field, laughing, or giving each other a special look,” he said. Building that level of comfort begins with trust. “It takes a little work, but I want to make people feel comfortable,” he said. “I’m not here to stage you. I just want people comfortable enough so that they can present themselves as naturally as possible.” While candid photography is his signature style, he understands that every session is different. Some occasions—such as school portraits—call for a more traditional approach, and those assignments helped refine his technique. A longtime journalist, Garcia’s path to photography was a natural one. As newsrooms evolved and reporters were increasingly expected to wear multiple hats, he found himself telling stories through both words and images. That transition began while working as a sports reporter for the New York Daily News, where carrying a camera became just as important as carrying a notebook. That experience planted the seed, but the pandemic created an unexpected opportunity as demand for outdoor photography grew.
“People from homeschool associations reached out to me and said, ‘We need our school photos,’” he said. “It was the pandemic and we weren’t allowed to do indoor photos, so I photographed them at a park.” One referral led to another. Families shared his work on social media, word spread throughout the community, and what began as a handful of school portraits quickly evolved into a thriving side business. School portraits eventually led to birthdays, family sessions, engagements, religious celebrations, and other milestones. Before long, he was documenting families through every stage of life. In Garcia’s world, the camera does more than capture a moment. It preserves a piece of life—a bridge between past and present and a source of nostalgia that transcends generations. That passion for preserving stories extends beyond the camera lens. Garcia also serves as staff photographer for Denville City Lifestyle, documenting the people and places that make the community unique. “I love having the ability to write and photograph for print,” he said. “It’s fun and it keeps me on my toes.” For Garcia, the best photographs aren’t manufactured. They’re authentic glimpses of life that preserve memories long after the moment has passed.

Create visual flow throughout your home by minimizing unnecessary visual breaks. When it comes to paint, accent walls are out. A rug that’s too small creates unnecessary visual breaks and can make a room feel busy, while a properly sized rug anchors the furniture, creates visual balance, and helps the room feel more open and intentionally designed.

and lighting can completely transform the way a room looks and feels. While design trends are constantly evolving, one approach that continues to stand the test of time is decorating with fewer, larger statement pieces. Oversized artwork, decorative mirrors, sculptural accents, and thoughtfully selected décor naturally draw the eye and help create a more curated, intentional look. Too many small accessories
on shelves and in curio cabinets can create visual clutter, often making a room feel busier than it needs to be. Whether your style is modern, traditional, or somewhere in between, the trends below offer simple ways to refresh your home and create a space you’ll enjoy for years to come. For personalized design guidance tailored to your home, contact the experts at A&R Interiors.
Layer Wood Tones
Mixing wood tones creates a curated, collected look that feels warm and timeless. Combining dark wood with reclaimed, textured pieces and lighter wood finishes adds depth, character, and visual interest, creating a home that feels thoughtfully collected over time. Rather than purchasing perfectly matched furniture sets, embrace complementary tones and textures for a space that feels layered, intentional, and uniquely yours.
Light With Purpose
Great lighting goes beyond a single overhead fixture. Plan your lighting in three layers: overhead lighting for overall illumination, floor lamps or plug-in sconces with cord covers to add warmth, and task lighting for smaller spaces. Picture lights and rechargeable cordless lamps highlight artwork, bookshelves, and architectural details while providing focused illumination, creating a home that feels both functional and inviting.

ARTICLE BY ALESSANDRA GUARNERI PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARRY HOW/GETTY IMAGES, JULIAN GARCIA
Confidence in Every Swing Golf4Her founder Christina Thompson is opening the door for more women to embrace the game. Some outfits do more than change how you look. They change how you feel. They give people the confidence to walk into a room, try something new, or step outside their comfort zone. For Christina Thompson, that room just happens to be a golf course. As founder of Golf4Her, Thompson has spent the past 16 years helping women discover that the right outfit isn’t simply about looking good. It can be the first step toward feeling like they belong in a sport that has long been viewed as a boys’ club. “I always wanted to create something where women felt comfortable, and it was a space of their own,” she said. Long before women’s golf exploded in popularity, Thompson noticed something missing. While working as an executive, she spent her spare time golfing and found women outside private clubs had few places to shop for fashionable golf apparel. Most relied on sporting goods stores with limited selections that rarely reflected their personal style. Rather than become a designer herself, Thompson envisioned something different: one online destination where women could shop apparel from dozens of brands, all curated specifically for them. “When I came up with this idea, there was no one else doing this.”
30
T R E N D SE T T E R | STYL E + BE AU T Y
She launched Golf4Her from the spare bedroom of her home in 2010, building relationships with brands like Adidas, Puma, and Callaway while introducing them to an audience they weren’t fully reaching. But selling clothes was never the ultimate goal. “It was always about how do we inspire and encourage women to play golf,” she said. “If it’s through fashion, then so be it.” That philosophy continues to guide the business today. Golf4Her now carries apparel from more than 170 brands in sizes ranging from extra-extra-small through size 20, curating styles for every body type and personality. Whether someone prefers classic country club looks or bold prints, Thompson believes every golfer deserves clothing that helps her feel confident before picking up a club. “Fashion should never be one-size-fitsall,” she added. That approach is especially important as more women discover the game. Some customers learn golf for networking. Others begin playing with a spouse or friends, join leagues after moving to a new town, or pick up the sport later in life after retirement, divorce, or widowhood. “Every single order that we get tells a different story,” she explained.
“ When I came up with this idea, there was no one else doing this.”
For many of those women, confidence begins long before the first swing. “There is nothing worse than wearing something that you don’t feel comfortable in,” she said. “When you’re playing golf, it’s such a mental game that you do not need to be worried about how you look.” That mission eventually grew beyond apparel. Over the years, Thompson has sponsored 15 LPGA professionals while also supporting amateur golfers through sponsorships, beginner clinics, and women’s golf leagues designed to make the sport more welcoming. Whether helping elite athletes compete on golf’s biggest stage or introducing first-time players to the game, the goal has remained the same: giving more women the confidence to tee it up. That commitment later expanded into two additional branches of the business. Alongside its flagship online boutique, Golf4Her also operates the Golf4Her Mulligan Boutique, where donated new and pre-loved apparel is sold to make premium golf fashion more affordable while keeping clothing out of landfills. Every purchase helps fund the Golf4Her
"Golf is hard. Shopping for golf should be easy."
Foundation, a nonprofit supporting women, children, and girls through financial assistance, golf scholarships, and charitable partnerships. The foundation’s mission is deeply personal for Thompson. Just 18 months after launching Golf4Her, she was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer. Even while undergoing chemotherapy, she continued running the business from her hospital bed, an experience that ultimately strengthened her commitment to giving back and supporting other women. Although Golf4Her serves customers around the world, Thompson intentionally chose to build the business in downtown Denville, where she supports local businesses, volunteers at community events, and has served on the Downtown Denville Business Improvement District board. “I wanted to always be a part of a bigger community,” she said. For Thompson, style has never been about following a dress code. It’s about giving women the confidence to step onto the course, knowing they belong there. “Golf is hard,” she said. “Shopping for golf should be easy.” S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
