Few seasons bring people together quite like fall. As the leaves begin to change, patios give way to cozy dining rooms, seasonal menus return, and local restaurants begin serving the comforting dishes we wait all year for. From pumpkin-inspired creations to rich pastas, hearty soups, and handcrafted cocktails, autumn is a season worth savoring. This month's Food & Beverage issue celebrates the chefs, restaurateurs, and local businesses that make our community's dining scene so special. We step inside Sergio & Co. Italian Specialties to learn how Sergio Sciancalepore turned a lifelong connection to food into a downtown Denville staple, building nearly three decades of tradition along the way. You'll also find local dining favorites, inspiration for your next gathering, and plenty of ways to enjoy the flavors of fall close to home. For me, fall is a season best enjoyed around the table with loved ones. One of my favorite family traditions is gathering for a homemade Italian meal, where comforting dishes, laughter, and unhurried conversation somehow make every autumn evening feel a little warmer. That's the beauty of food. It brings people together, creates traditions, and turns ordinary moments into lasting memories. Whether you're discovering a new neighborhood restaurant, supporting a longtime local favorite, or preparing a meal to share with family and friends, I hope this issue inspires you to slow down, gather around the table, and savor everything our community has to offer this season. Those moments of connection are exactly what Denville City Lifestyle is all about. Our mission has always been to celebrate the people, stories, and local businesses that make our community so special. We love hearing from our readers and discovering the moments worth sharing. If you have a story to tell, a milestone to celebrate, or a business you'd like to introduce, we'd love to hear from you. Send us your photos and details—you might just see them featured in an upcoming issue. For more local highlights and behind-the-scenes moments, follow us on Instagram @DenvilleCityLifestyle. Wishing you a season filled with great food, great company, and unforgettable memories.

SE RV I NG U P TR ADITION Family roots and Italian specialties have made Sergio & Co. a Denville staple for decades.
Sergio Sciancalepore didn’t simply grow up around Italian food— he grew up in the business. From homemade pasta and cured meats to the lessons learned behind the counter of his family’s Italian specialty shops, those early years eventually inspired him to build a place of his own. Nearly 27 years later, Sergio & Co. Italian Specialties remains rooted in the same traditions that shaped him. And of all the specialties behind the counter, one still stands above the rest.
“Mozzarella,” he said without hesitation. “By far.” Inside Sergio & Co. Italian Specialties, there is plenty of it to go around. Fresh mozzarella sits in containers of salty water, waiting to be sliced, pulled apart, or layered into one of the many Italian specialties served from behind the counter. And there’s no shortage of it—the cheese is made fresh daily. The mozzarella is just one of the specialties that has kept customers coming through the doors for decades. Sergio & Co. has been a Denville staple since opening on Oct. 14, 1999. Located

at 28 Broadway, the shop sits in the heart of downtown, sandwiched—pun intended—between longtime favorites like Denville Dairy and Sweet Expressions. Step inside today and the cases tell their own story, showcasing an ever-changing selection of Italian favorites, with items like rice balls, stuffed artichoke hearts, chicken cutlets, prepared dishes, and seasonal specialties. Fresh breads, cured meats, cheeses and other specialty items add to the selection, giving customers something new to discover alongside the classics they’ve come to know and love. For longtime customers, a visit is about more than checking items off a shopping list. There’s a familiarity to stepping inside, whether they’re picking up a favorite sandwich, planning a family meal, or simply seeing what looks good behind the counter that day. It’s the kind of neighborhood experience Sciancalepore envisioned when he first chose downtown Denville. But Sciancalepore’s story in the business began long before Sergio & Co. His father and uncle opened M&R Salumeria in Jersey City in the late ’60s, selling salamis, cured meats and many of the same Italian specialties that would eventually fill the cases at his own shop. In the late ’70s, his father went on to open Michael’s Salumeria in Lyndhurst, an Italian specialty shop now approaching its 50th anniversary. Sciancalepore started working there around age 12, spending weekends helping wherever he could.
“I was able to learn in an environment that I felt very comfortable in,” Sciancalepore said. “I could just kick around in the back, and some days I’d fool around with the dough. We used to make our own pasta back then. I could teach myself. It also taught me how to work hard.” That early education continued into adulthood, as Sciancalepore spent years working in wholesale Italian provisions, expanding his knowledge of the products and the business. In 1998, Sciancalepore and his wife, Allyson, moved to Morris County. Soon after, the opportunity arose to purchase George’s Deli in downtown Denville, and Sciancalepore knew he had found what he was looking for. He loved the location, the neighboring businesses and, most importantly, the sense of community surrounding them. “I really wanted to be part of the community,” he said. “I just felt like it was exactly what I was looking for—small, front and rear entrance. It just felt right.” “I always wanted to be part of a town, not, like, on a highway somewhere. You get a lot of transients, which isn’t a problem, but I’m all about connecting with people.” His presence in Denville has only grown since then. In 2018, Sciancalepore and longtime friend Tommy Pollio opened The Pasta Shop, an intimate restaurant centered around homemade pastas and creative dishes. Over the years, Sciancalepore learned that working hard meant knowing when to step back. His decision to close Sergio & Co. on CONTINUED >

Sundays—traditionally a busy day for Italian specialty shops—wasn’t popular with everyone, but it’s one he doesn’t regret. “It was hard to get people to work on Sundays because my staff was already giving me 40, 45-hour weeks. They were tired,” he said. “So I decided to close on Sundays. A lot of people didn’t like me for it, but it was the best thing I ever did. It gave me longevity.” And with that longevity has come something even more meaningful: lasting relationships. Sergio & Co. has become a family affair, too, with all three of Sergio and Allyson’s children spending time behind the counter over the years. After nearly three decades in downtown Denville, generations of customers have walked through those same doors. The food may bring them in, but for Sciancalepore, the connections built across the counter are what matter most. It’s a lesson rooted in watching his father— and one that ultimately shaped the kind of business owner he wanted to become. “I felt like I accomplished what I was setting out to do—to create that store that people know, and it’s part of their lives,” Sciancalepore added. “It’s part of their families. It’s part of their traditions.”
“It’s part of their lives. It’s part of their families. It’s part of their traditions.” That sense of responsibility to the community has remained just as important to Sciancalepore as the business itself. “I didn’t want to be just some guy on the side of a highway who doesn’t know anybody and they don’t know me. That’s easy, because if you screw up or something, you walk down the street and no one knows who you are. It doesn’t really matter. Me? They kept me accountable. I want to walk down the street with my head up high. I want people to know I deliver on my promise of quality, value, and personal service.” Nearly 27 years later, the shop has become exactly what Sciancalepore envisioned: a place where good food brings people through the door, but community keeps them coming back. Sergio & Co. Italian Specialties is located at 28 Broadway in Denville.

the

Matthew Pierone brings creativity to the table at Gourmet Cafe A chef’s special is far more than a dish. It’s an art form—a chance to experiment, take a few creative liberties, and turn a spark of inspiration into something memorable on the plate. Just ask Matthew Pierone, the chef behind Gourmet Cafe in Parsippany. A seasoned restaurateur who has been donning the chef’s hat for decades, Pierone doesn’t necessarily begin with a recipe. His specials often take shape in the moment, sparked by an ingredient, a memory, or a familiar flavor that suddenly inspires something new. “Sometimes I’ll be reminded of a previous experience and I’m like ‘I should do that sauce,’” he explained. “It’s like a chain reaction.” Recently, that creativity has centered on one particular dish. “I found this premium-reserve pork chop and everybody’s been loving it,” he said. “I’ve been changing it up every week.” Rather than settle on one preparation, Pierone uses the premium cut as a canvas, reinventing it with different flavors and accompaniments. Staff and customer feedback help shape those creations, while social media offers another window into the dishes and flavors catching diners’ attention. That willingness to experiment is what keeps Pierone’s specials fresh and unexpected. Even in an Italian kitchen, he isn’t afraid to venture beyond tradition, borrowing techniques and flavors from other cuisines before giving them his own Italian touch.
16
C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
He did just that with his pork chop forestière—meaning “from the forest”—special, a hearty preparation built around rich, earthy flavors. “Forestière is a French sauce that incorporates shallots, herbs, shiitake mushrooms, brown sauce, sherry wine, and cream,” he said. “I also add basil to keep things Italian.” The finished dish brings those elements together over the premium pork chop, with the savory, mushroom-forward sauce adding richness and depth. Roasted herbed potatoes and a vegetable of the day, such as string beans or carrots, round out the plate. And the forestière is just one of several pork chop creations that have made their way onto the specials menu. Other variations have included a Bourbon Street Pork Chop with caramelized onions in a honey-bourbon brown sauce; Pork Chop Saltimbocca layered with spinach, prosciutto and melted mozzarella in a sage and Madeira wine sauce; and a Balsamic Fig Pork Chop finished with figs and caramelized onions in a balsamic-fig reduction. For BYO diners looking for the finishing touch, Pierone recommends pairing the dish with a Chianti or Cabernet Sauvignon. “Something strong,” he added. While the pork chop may be the star of this particular plate, next week’s preparation could look entirely different. After all, a chef’s special isn’t about following a formula. It’s about seeing where inspiration leads. Gourmet Cafe is located at 136 Baldwin Road in Parsippany.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but when illness or injury strikes, having quality care close to home can make all the difference. That’s where urgent care comes in. AFC—American Family Care—helps bridge the gap between the doctor’s office and the emergency room, providing convenient access to care when it’s needed most. “This is a better way to reach communities and relieve the pressure placed on emergency rooms and hospital systems,” said O’George Chima, CEO of Sarachi and Celestic Health and owner of AFC Urgent Care locations in Roxbury, Phillipsburg, Montgomery and Princeton. “We’re delivering health care in a fast, efficient, and economical manner.”
AFC continues to expand across New Jersey and nationwide, reflecting growing demand for convenient, timely, and cost-effective health care. As CEO, Chima oversees AFC Roxbury’s business and financial operations and strategic vision for expansion. Through Celestic Health, that expansion is bringing medical centers to other parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His wife, Dr. Sarah Chima, a surgeon and advocate for retail medicine, serves as Medical Director, overseeing compliance and clinical operations across the company’s urgent care centers. Urgent care centers took on an increasingly visible role during the pandemic as destinations for testing and vaccinations. Today, AFC continues to offer preventive and diagnostic care while preparing for one of its busiest times of year: flu season. “Last year we were seeing over 80 patients a day at the Roxbury location during peak periods,” Chima said. In just over three and a half years, the location has served more than 40,000 patients. “The flu is a virus and there are different strains every season,” he said. Annual flu vaccination remains an important preventive measure, particularly during colder months when respiratory illnesses spread more readily. Vaccines are updated each season to target expected strains and can reduce the risk and severity of illness. AFC’s services extend beyond seasonal illnesses, offering routine and immigration physicals, allergy treatment, laceration repair and testing for flu, COVID-19, RSV and Lyme disease. On-site laboratory testing and imaging can also help patients move from evaluation to treatment without additional stops. “Everything is on site,” he said. “Let’s say a patient needs an X-ray and has to drive another ten miles to an imaging center. They’ll leave more anxious than when they came in.”
When an illness or injury requires a higher level of care or longer-term treatment, AFC collaborates with hospitals and specialists. “Referrals are dependent on the case,” he said. “A patient comes in with a possible broken ankle. A provider here works to stabilize the fracture and depending upon the severity, we may refer them to an orthopedic practice or a hospital.” Beyond individual patient care, the center also places a strong focus on occupational medicine and workers’ compensation. “AFC Roxbury Township is the best place for occupational medicine and workers’ compensation, not only in Roxbury Township and the surrounding towns, but in Morris County as a whole,” said Dr. Chima. For non-life-threatening conditions, AFC can offer an alternative to a lengthy and potentially costly emergency room visit. The center welcomes patients regardless of insurance status, with self-pay options available. “This is an efficient way to treat non-life-threatening conditions,” Dr. Chima said. “You’re in and out in just under an hour and can go about your day.” For AFC, it all comes back to bringing quality health care closer to home—and making sure patients have somewhere to turn when they need it. AFC Urgent Care Roxbury Township is located at 278 NJ-10 West in Succasunna.

LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY BAILEY

Enjoy this simple, flavorful food for the soul. ‘Pomodoro’ means tomato in Italian, and that’s what this dish is - a fresh tomato sauce with basil, garlic, onion, and olive oil.
INGREDIENTS • • • • •
• • • • •
1 Tbsp salt 3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup onion, finely diced 4 garlic cloves, finely diced or minced 1 lb fresh tomatoes, halved or chopped (I use garden cherry tomatoes if in season or Roma tomatoes are a good choice) Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes 3 basil sprigs, divided 1 lb. spaghetti 1 cup Parmesan, finely grated, divided 1 Tbsp butter
DIRECTIONS 1. Heat medium-size Dutch Oven or large skillet over medium heat then add extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt. Once hot, add chopped onion then saute until tender, 2-3 minutes. Add fresh garlic and saute until golden but not brown, another 30 seconds.
2. Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan with a pinch of sugar then simmer on medium-low for 20-25 minutes. Stir and press the tomatoes against the bottom and sides of the pan to make saucier. If sauce begins to pop too much, turn down even further. (If sauce starts to thicken too much add pasta water as needed.) 3. Meanwhile, bring a pot of water to boil for the pasta and season generously with salt. 4. When sauce is almost ready, add fresh basil leaves torn into small pieces, plus butter, remaining salt, and freshly cracked pepper. Add more salt to taste if needed. 5. Cook the pasta until it’s just shy of al dente then transfer it to the sauce pot with tongs to finish cooking directly in the sauce. Add splashes of pasta water if needed to cook pasta all the way and to keep it saucy. 6. Toss pasta and sauce with 1/2 Parmesan cheese. Serve in pasta bowls and sprinkle remaining cheese on top. Garnish with fresh basil. OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / D E N V I L L E

Every good party eventually finds its way to the kitchen island. Someone opens a bottle of wine. Someone else offers to help but mostly stands nearby and talks. Plates fill the counter as guests drift in from the dining room. It usually starts with the food. Something is simmering on the stove, ingredients are being prepared and someone is sneaking a taste before dinner is served. Yet cooking is only part of what draws people into the room. Today’s kitchen does more than support meal preparation. It is where families eat breakfast, children finish homework and guests linger long after dinner. After designing and building thousands of kitchens, Vic Fiore and Chris Fontana of Magnolia Home Remodeling have seen how the room’s role has changed. “Years ago, it was more utilitarian,” Fontana says. “Now it’s the nucleus of the house. Entertaining, business, homework. Lifestyle revolves around the kitchen.” One feature continues to anchor that lifestyle. “I would say a large island,” Fiore says. “Most of the gatherings we have, holidays and events, we all end up around the island.” When designed well, it provides room to prepare food, serve a crowd and spend time together without everyone getting in the cook’s way. That same attention to how people live shapes every decision that follows. Magnolia’s team asks homeowners how often they cook, how many people live in the house, how they entertain and which appliances they need. Children and pets matter, too. A family with dogs may need durable flooring. Someone drawn to marble should understand that it can stain and show wear. A serious cook may need a larger range or more prep space, while someone else may prioritize seating and storage. Lighting can be just as important as the layout. Fiore encourages homeowners to consider natural light, overhead lighting and whether changing
windows or doors could make the room feel brighter and work better. “If you can replace windows and doors and bring more light into the room, I think that’s a great thing to consider,” Fiore says. Those choices will look different in every home, but each should support how the room will be used for years to come. Fiore and Fontana believe a major investment should not be driven by whatever happens to be trending that year. “If you do the right kitchen, it’s one time,” Fontana says. “You get it done, and that’s it.” A properly planned kitchen can serve a family for 30 to 40 years. That requires more than beautiful finishes. It means considering which materials can handle daily life and what will still feel right long after the latest trend has passed. That is why Magnolia encourages homeowners to slow down during the planning process. Clients often arrive with inspiration photos, social media posts and AI-generated images. Fiore and Fontana help translate those ideas into something beautiful, functional and realistic. They guide clients through cabinetry, appliances, flooring, lighting and surfaces while offering honest feedback when a popular look may not age well. Some companies will say yes to every request. Magnolia would rather explain the trade-offs and help clients avoid regret. That long-term thinking also applies to the parts of the kitchen no one sees. Magnolia prefers to strip the room down so its team can inspect and address plumbing, electrical systems, insulation, framing and subflooring before rebuilding. The work may not be glamorous, but it helps prevent homeowners from reopening walls later to repair an aging pipe, add electrical capacity or correct an underlying problem.
“The finished kitchen should reflect how a family actually lives, from how much they cook to how they entertain, gather and use the space every day.” CONTINUED >

“Everyone just wants to have the kitchen done and look great,” Fiore says. “All the rough stages are an important part of the project.” Budget is also part of every conversation. Magnolia works with clients to protect the priorities that matter most while identifying places to adjust. Sometimes that means choosing a comparable countertop, scaling back a decorative detail or postponing part of the wish list. At other times, the best advice is to wait until the project can be completed properly. Financing options are also available for qualified homeowners. Once construction begins, that thoughtful planning becomes hands-on support. Each project is assigned a dedicated project manager who serves as the homeowner’s primary contact. Fiore and Fontana divide the active projects between them and personally visit their assigned job sites. Someone from Magnolia’s office calls every active client each Wednesday to ask how things are going, answer questions and catch concerns early. “We absolutely do not wing it,” Fontana says. That line may best capture the Magnolia difference. The finished kitchen may look effortless, but the process behind it is detailed, personal and highly organized. A beautiful kitchen gets attention. A thoughtfully planned kitchen becomes part of the way a family lives, cooks and gathers for decades. Fall Penne with Roasted Butternut Squash INGREDIENTS: Servings: 4 • 2 1/4 lbs. butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 3 cups) • 1/4 cup olive oil, divided • kosher salt • 1 pound penne pasta • 3 ounces pancetta, sliced 1/4-inch thick and cut into small dice • 2 shallots, thinly sliced crosswise • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes • 10 fresh sage leaves, coarsely chopped • 1/2 cup finely grated Pecorino Romano cheese • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. Place butternut squash on a rimmed baking sheet and toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Season with salt. 3. Transfer to the oven and roast until the squash is browned and tender, for about 15 minutes. 4. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Generously salt the water. Add pasta and cook according to package directions. 5. Drain pasta, reserving up to 2 cups of cooking liquid. Set pasta and reserved cooking liquid aside. 6. Meanwhile, heat the remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add pancetta and cook until just crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Add shallots, crushed red pepper, and sage. Cook until shallots are soft, for 4 to 5 minutes. 7. Add penne and squash and toss gently, adding reserved pasta cooking liquid as necessary to moisten. 8. Add cheese and black pepper, and cook, tossing gently, until pasta and squash are heated through. 9. Serve immediately with more grated cheese, if desired.
