Union Station stands as one of Downtown Denver’s most recognizable and significant landmarks. Much of the beauty and style of Union Station today is thanks to a 2012 restoration project of the Denver Metro transportation systems, focusing on Union Station as the transportation hub.  Dana Crawford and a group of visionaries invested 54 million dollars to restore, redevelop, and return Union Station to its original glory.  Blossoming out of this project is the unmatched Crawford Hotel.

The Crawford is an upscale, boutique hotel inside Union Station. The Crawford Hotel Manager, Ed Blair states “There's nothing like it”.  Anyone who's had the pleasure of staying at The Crawford knows exactly what he means.  From the minute guests arrive at Union Station, they are greeted with the opulence and grandiosity of true Beaux-Arts architecture.  The great arches and oversized chandeliers send guests right back to 1881 when Union Station first opened its doors. The Crawford’s 112 guest rooms are designed to capture the unique styles that have flowed through Union Station in its 142 year history.  The first floor of rooms conjure feelings of true pullman train car elegance.  The next floor boasts large rooms and high ceilings, giving a Victorian Era feel.  Finally, the upscale attic with its exposed beams has a more modern New York City loft vibe.  Each room has an iPad where guests can order from eight restaurants for local meals

delivered right to their room.  Guests are given a daily, complimentary cup of coffee at Pig Train Coffee, a free scoop of ice cream from Milkbox Ice Creamery, and one daily craft beer at The Terminal Bar.  Guests can also enjoy access to the gym and fitness class at Oxford Club as well as discounted treatments at The Oxford Club Spa and Salon. Anyone staying at The Crawford must make sure to visit  The Cooper Lounge for a hand crafted cocktail and some 1920s Hollywood Glam.  Cocktails can be sipped in the lounge, among the local excitement in and around Union Station, or can be taken to go and enjoyed in the comfort of your own room.

KEY LIME CUPCAKES

BRINGING STYLE TO THE KITCHEN

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 cup butter, softened

• 3/4 cup sugar

• 1/4 cup packed brown sugar

• 2 large eggs, room temperature

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 2 cups graham cracker crumbs

• 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

• 3 teaspoons baking powder

• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• 1 cup 2% milk

FROSTING

• 1 package (8 ounces)

cream cheese, softened

• 1/4 cup butter, softened

• 2 teaspoons grated Key lime zest

• 2 teaspoons Key lime juice

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 3-3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line 16 muffin cups with paper or foil liners

2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. In another bowl, whisk cracker crumbs, flour, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition

3. Fill prepared cups two-thirds full. Bake 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

4. For frosting, in a large bowl, beat cream cheese, butter and lime zest until blended. Beat in lime juice and vanilla. Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar until smooth. Pipe or spread onto cupcakes. Refrigerate until serving.

After dinner, enjoy a cocktail in the Cruise Room.  This beautiful bar was modeled after the original cocktail bar on the Queen Mary.  The art deco styling transports guests to the 1930s. STEELE ATHLETICS

These teams compete locally, nationally, and some even compete in the world championships.

ALLOW YOUR KIDS TO DEVELOP AS AN ATHLETE AND A HUMAN

Owner and creator of Steele Athletics, Brent Steele, found a love in cheerleading during high school, and moved to coaching and choreographing across the world after his college years. After landing in Colorado, Steele Athletics was born. He knew the importance of the sport from personal experience, and decided this was his way to give back to the future generations.

The business is “centered around the development of kids. [...] Our expectations are deeper than athletics, as we want them to develop both as athletes and as humans. We focus on the whole athlete: mind, body, and self,” says Steele. The gym naturally teaches life lessons of discipline, patience and respect, in a safe, loving environment. Steele says “It’s a safe place to win and lose.” Having unconditional support and the ability to fail is vital to any athlete’s success.

Steele Athletics offers two types of training: Competitive Elite Cheerleading along with Recreational Cheerleading and Tumbling. Steele is famous for their competitive training, as it is the most elite in the state, taking place year round, with the teams practicing two to three days per week.

In addition to their high level Elite teams, Steele Athletics also offers recreational cheer and tumbling classes. These classes accept students of all pasts, from no experience to advanced. Many of Steele’s students are focused on gaining experience in hopes of making their high school cheer teams in the future. These recreational tumbling classes can even be used for kids to “exercise their crazy energy in a safe place,” says Steele. Learning to tumble and flip is something most children enjoy! Not to mention tumbling and basic gymnastics provides a solid foundation of coordination that can be utilized in many different sports in the student’s future. Stunt classes “allow kids to learn the real skills and techniques so they don’t just climb all over dad,” says Steele. They also offer open gym, giving a time to come in, use the equipment, and have fun with some friends. This gives the student full freedom of choice, but again provides a safe and supportive space to do so. Cheerleading 101 is a class that any student can take, giving them the basic knowledge of cheerleading. No matter age or experience. “As long as they are potty trained, they are welcome here,” says Steele. Clinics are also popular, as they happen throughout the year, making them easily accessible.

A new, fully recreational Show Team is forming, starting in October, which will meet once per week and will run on an 8 week session. Steele’s Show Team will perform twice at local sporting events such as a Nuggets game, in November and December. This team is for any child, ages 5-12, and no experience is needed. UNIQUE STYLE OF LOCAL HOODS

In 1998, owner of Bitchin’ Hoods, David Jakopic, found “a corduroy hat at the bottom of a box at a thrift store in Glenwood Springs. [...] I fell in love with it.” This was just the beginning, as years later, in 2002, David would dream of making these corduroy hats, numbering each one, and selling them. Not until 2005, when his wife bought him his first sewing machine, did the dream become reality. Finally, after 24 long years, David started releasing his hoods to the public, in September of 2022.

“I am the only one who designs and makes every hat. All made of corduroy, numbering each in numerical order, not duplicating any, essentially making them 1 of 1.” Not only is each unique, but practically unreplicable with free handed embroidery and a majority of vintage (pre-2k) corduroy.
