LIFESTYLE LETTER
Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself Friends, The theme of this month is "Local Love". Although that sounds simple, the world that we now live in has made this unnecessarily complicated. To some this month its hearts, candy and taking your loved one to dinner. To some, we look back on the achievements and accomplishments that amazing men and women before us have given us the privilege to enjoy. Love is actually very simple. Its a feeling, its a belief, its the acknowledgement that someone else's feelings and well-being is closely knit to the way we value ourselves. Love is giving without requiring it to be returned. My wish for you this month is that you open your hearts and minds and purposely expand your love. I love my people. Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, Indian......(I just realized my idea of naming everyone was gonna be insane). I love and appreciate you all. My LGBTQ friends, I love you all. Everyone I've ever had a grudge with, I love you too. Let's be better. Mom, I love you. You're the best mom I ever had. :) Son, I know we don't always see eye to eye, but you are my everything. I love you.

Valentines Day at Water Grill
ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR DAVENPORT
Mountain towns are often distrusting of transported seafood, brushing it aside out of concern for freshness. After all, how fresh can it be after a daylong flight or transit? Enter Water Grill, a SoCal-based chain of high-end family restaurants dedicated to serving Denver the freshest fish possible thanks to a proprietary distribution company, alongside unbeatable service and an unforgettable ambiance. “The restaurant also harbors an impressive saltwater tank system chock-full of live shellfish, Barents Sea king crab, lobster, and more.”
Denver’s new Water Grill location opened to the public on February 9th, with a soft opening held a week prior for friends and family. They swung open their doors with a devotion to offering an elevated dining experience, complete with premium seafood and a staff with deep knowledge of each menu item. The 9,400-square-foot establishment can seat nearly 240 guests in the main dining room, plus 36 seats at the bar and raw bar. So if you’re planning a dinner party or group dining experience, they have the room to accommodate your needs. Water Grill plans to add another private dining space in the near future as well with three different rooms, clocking in at 3,000 square feet. This room would serve luxurious private events for groups of 20 to 70 guests. To book a private event, send any inquiries to Events Manager Hunter Degraeve at hdegraeve@kingsseafood.com. Inside, you’ll find a large dining space and three kinds of bars: a custom copper top bar for drinks, another for sushi, and a raw bar to claim the day’s catch. The chic dining room flaunts homey wooden ceilings and rustic leather chairs, as well as buttoned, tufted leather booths and ambient chandeliers. Nautical decorations surround each room, from paintings of the sea to fake snapper and mahi-mahi pinned to classic brick walls. And if you’re seated by the kitchen, you’re in for a show. All that separates you from Water Grill’s team of seafood extraordinaires is a sliding glass door. Seeing your food being made offers a strange assurance, especially when you see the pristine kitchen quality Water Grill maintains. The LoDo restaurant even has large, mechanical windows that open the dining room to the outside world. If you’re a fan of dinner with a view, not to mention the addition of the city’s undeniable energy, don’t sleep on this unique feature. Now, for the food. Water Grill’s extensive menu doesn’t miss a beat, from wild Alaskan black cod and tasty King Crab to fresh sashimi crafted by their team

of skilled itamae. You’ll also find Ross Sea Chilean sea bass that’ll make your mouth water, Santa Barbara spot prawns, chilled shellfish platters for shared meals, and expansive menus for their raw bar and oyster selection. You’ll find that their menu changes on a daily basis according to the season. The restaurant also harbors an impressive saltwater tank system chock-full of live shellfish, Barents Sea king crab, lobster, and more. However, it’s their signature plates and expert service that’ll keep you coming back. Try their farmed Peruvian Bay Scallops, garnished with pistachio and citrus pesto, or a classic harbor meal such as the New England Lobster Rolls. The wild Spanish Octopus is bolstered with fingerling potato, roasted tomato, niçoise olives, and just the right amount of lemon and olive oil - all on a charcoal grill. As for their wild Ross Sea Chilean Sea Bass, you’ll find it paired with a memorable butternut squash gnocchi and sage brown butter. Water Grill even cooks up secret, offmenu items for those who are aware, such as their fresh, whole fish ceviche. For a meal that’ll leave you craving more, consider a few recommendations of Chef Bierderman. If you like to kick things off with an appetizer, go for the whole fish ceviche. After you’ve cleared that plate, try out Water Grill’s Black Cod for a keen example of their top-tier fish quality. And if your sweet tooth is beckoning, Chef Bierderman suggests the Key Lime Pie among other options like Maple Cheesecake, Chocolate Espresso Ganache Cake, and their fan-favorite - Caramel Bread Pudding, topped with alaea red sea salt. Water Grill is owned by King’s Seafood Company, a high-end restaurant chain and seafood distribution company out of Costa Mesa, California. Perhaps the most interesting trait about the company is the latter fact; since King’s Seafood owns its own distribution company, their fish is bought straight from fishermen.
Oysters are direct from oyster farms. Crab boats supply their live King Crab. Thanks to King’s seafood distribution company in Santa Ana, California, Water Grill can bring the freshest seafood from the coast to the mountains of Denver. Little-to-none quality is lost in transit, too. In fact, Denver’s Water Grill receives three shipments of seafood per week from their distribution center in California - and the trip is only four hours door-to-door. King’s Seafood Company and Water Grill were co-founded by two cousins who tapped into their fathers’ legacies. Sam and Jeff King, whose fathers began building restaurants together in 1945, hold over 75 years of close connections with local fishermen and lobstermen. A large percentage of King’s supply comes from Southern California, which is then plugged into their tight-knit network of family restaurants. When asked about their decision to set up shop in Denver, co-owner Sam King shared his thoughts: “We are so pleased to bring Water Grill to Colorado. As a family-owned business, we approach our entire operation through that lens; our team, fisherman partners and our guests are part of our community. We’re dedicated to responsible and sustainable aquaculture, and we’re looking forward to bringing that experience to Denver.” Visit LoDo’s new Water Grill location off of 1691 Market Street to taste the freshness for yourself, whether it be a runof-the-mill family meal, dinner date, or private party that calls for custom accommodations. Browse their menu and reserve a table by visiting their website at watergrill.com/denver.

Beauty that’s on Point GLOW GETTERS ARTICLE BY SAIJEL BURKETT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOB MARTINEZ
On Point Beauty is the hair product line that people are talking about! The product line was born out of On Point Beauty Bar, located on the Welton Corridor in the heart of Five Points. This hair and beauty salon founded by Priya Burkett and Vicky Howard, is a black and brown owned business, cementing these two women as strong role models in the Denver community. They have dubbed themselves ‘Glow Getters’, defining it as, “A person that is living their authentic self and prioritizes self-care. [Someone who] Embraces their naturally fierce confidence to achieve in their passions, professions, and communities.” Burkett and Howard’s goal is to create an inclusive space and brand for people to “Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good.” Priya Burkett worked in the corporate world for more than 30 years. She started as computer programmer to leading a sales team for American Express, before she co-founded On Point Beauty. When asked what skills transferred from her corporate life she said, “Developing relationships, process improvement, and grit,” each of which, on top

of her dedication, allows her small business to thrive. For Burkett, a Glow Getter means, “someone that is consistently working hard to get everything they need to get done while valuing self-care.” For the past 10 plus years Vicky Howard has worked in similar hair salons and now runs On Point Beauty Bar. Howard believes that a Glow Getter is, “a human that is passionate and persistent about achieving their goals whether it is personal or professional and wants to look On Point while doing so.” Through this journey as an entrepreneur, she has learned how vital good communication and being organized is to a business’ success. Now Howard and Burkett have their own hair product line, allowing them to spread their message outside of On Point Beauty Bar and help others become Glow Getters. The products’ focus is to deliver hydration
to the hair and scalp, especially living in a dry climate such as Denver. Howard’s core message to her clients is, “Hydrating your hair from the inside as well as the outside is the key foundation to amazing hair.” You can find On Point Beauty products in shops around Denver like their salon, Three Arrows Gallery, and Flying Solo, a boutique in Soho New York. We can all be Glow Getters by pursuing our goals and ensure we have time to care for ourselves. On Point Beauty Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner will ensure you look good and put your best foot forward, as you work towards achieving success! Surround yourself with a community of Glow Getters, keep yourself accountable, healthy, and happy. As they say, “Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good.”

Perseverance YOU ARE YOUR ONLY LIMIT ARTICLE BY COURTNEY SAMUEL
YOU ARE YOUR ONLY LIMIT I laid on the flat bench getting ready to complete my final set of the pyramid, 185 for 10 reps. I stood back up and made sure that the bar was where I wanted it. I looked my spotter in the eye and said, “I’m getting 10.” I sat on the edge of the bench and adjusted my headphones. I closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths. When I opened them, my mind was ready and it was time to get it. I laid back down and grabbed the bar. One...two...three…and the bar was now over my chest. The first three reps were easy. But after the fourth rep, my body screamed ENOUGH! I held it for a moment, and then completed a fifth rep. That was it. That’s all I had. I gave it my all. I was going to rerack it, but then I instantly reminded myself that I buried that version of me a long time ago… We are not born quitters. Quitting becomes a habit if we continue to do it over a period of time. You can do it so often that it becomes your automatic response to

adversity or a very challenging situation. Instead of finding a way to get through it, you give up and walk away. It may start off as something small when you’re a child, but then it translates into us becoming adults who quit the moment something becomes hard. That could mean quitting on a project, quitting on a sports team, quitting a job, and quitting on relationships. Now you’re living a life of mediocrity because you have refused to persevere through the adversities that will help you to become a better person. Habits are hard to break. But it can be done. The only way to break the cycle is to do the thing that you have avoided for so long, go through adversity. Thankfully there is a place you can go where can now learn how not to quit, the gym.
The gym is more than just a place where you train your physical body. It is also a place where you can teach your mind how to push pass barriers. Adversity now becomes your friend. You welcome the challenge. The gym helped me to become the man that I am today. I use to have a weak mind and body. I lacked self-confidence. When things got hard, I would quit. Even when I did make progress, I did not allow myself to reach my full potential because I was afraid of the work that I would have to put in to get there. Even though I stepped into the gym for the first time in August of 2004, it took me years to break a habit that took me a lifetime to learn. What’s great about the gym is the culture. All the people that I trained with played a part in me becoming who I am.
The people help to create the atmosphere. And because of each and every one of them, I broke the cycle and learned how not to quit anymore. I developed the ability not to quit by learning how to finish. And because of that I have developed a will that can help me push through things that would have broken me in the past… ...The sixth and seventh rep moved better than I thought. Any explosiveness that was in me was now completely gone. As the bar touched my chest and I began to push it back up for the 8th rep. The momentum stopped. My spotter reached down to grab the bar to help me, but I told him that I had it. Only 2 more to go. I could have stopped right here and there would have been no shame at all from anyone. But this was not about them, it was

about me and I don’t quit on myself anymore. This was no longer about what my physical body could do. I’d given 100 percent. My will took over and I was absolutely determined to finish. The bar went down for my 9th rep and I could feel the tightness in my chest and arms. I was pushing it at the speed of a slow-moving elevator. Now my arms were shaking and my grip was not as strong. As the bar went down for my final rep, I went deep within myself for internal motivation. The bar hit my chest and it immediately felt as if I was pushing against a brick wall. I begin to think about the reason I do the things I do. I also thought about the times I just gave up and quit on myself. Nothing, and I do mean absolutely nothing was going to be able to stop me from finishing what I had started. Through sheer will alone, I pushed that bar back up and re-racked it. I stood up in a daze, but I stood in victory. I am proud that I have developed the ability not to quit. It is a lesson that I have learned from the gym that I have applied to my everyday life. Even when 100 percent isn’t enough, I find a way to still give more. Learn how to encourage yourself and to become someone who is known to finish what they start. Develop better habits and find a way to make things happen. Don’t Quit! You got this! Coach Courtney Samuel President, Bodies By Perseverance 303.506.3253 @MYBBP

THE MECHANIC
of Wings A decent basket of wings is easy to come by. A less-than-decent batch is even easier. But when you bite into a wing from Genna Rae’s, your expectations are sure to fly through the roof. The owner, Genn, opened Genna Rae’s Wings & More just six years ago as a way to share his hometown Virgin Island cooking with the local Denver community. When he entered the country, he dreamed of being an auto mechanic. But then, his new neighbors got a taste of his fresh-cooked wings - and just like that, Genn had found his calling in a soul-centered restaurant named after his beloved daughter. With a singular location in Five Points and plans to expand across Colorado in the near future, Genn is keen on sharing his soul food with his Denver neighbors. Each item on the menu is made-to-order, fresh as can be, and a tribute to Genn’s Caribbean heritage and beloved cuisine. However, wings aren’t all Genn has to offer. Despite his status as the “Mechanic of Wings,” he also offers gourmet burgers, classic sandwiches, full-on entrees including ribs, brisket, and hotlinks. Visit their website at gennaraeswings.com, or call (720) 287-3523 to order ahead or get in touch.

New Year Styling with Jorge Toledo MASTER STYLIST A new year means a new you, and what better way to refresh your style than with a cut and color that brings out your best self? For Jorge Toledo, suiting his clients with the right style is just another Tuesday. He’s skilled in both men and women’s hair, but after honing his cut and color technique for the past 30 years or so, his roster of clients is majorly female. In fact, Jorge got his start before he could even test out for a driving permit. At just 11 years young, he was cutting his friends’ hair on his family’s balcony for $5 apiece - and upon graduating high school, he’d go on to beauty school before attaining his license over 20 years ago. When asked about his styling philosophy, Jorge said a lot with little, which perfectly feeds into his ideology: “Less is more, because simple captivates more.” ALong with his famous cut and color, Jorge also specializes in Brazilian blowout straightening, keratin treatment, and even bridal hair and makeup. His bridal work takes a mere two hours to prepare, an impressive feat considering the perfection demanded by the “big day.” For a cut and color that’ll refresh your style or bridal preparation that widens your groom’s eyes, reach out to Denver’s choice stylist Jorge Toledo. To set an appointment, shoot an email to jorgetoledo@comcast.net or call (720) 272-7988 to reach him directly.
