Welcome to the New Year. It’s a time filled with infinite possibilities and exciting opportunities. We all have the power to create whatever we want this year, and as I’m sure we’ve all learned over the previous years, passion, community, and well-being are most worth fighting for. I don’t typically do New Year’s resolutions as they feel more deflating than empowering. There is some magic in creating New Year’s intentions - special prayers we send to the world and ourselves, hoping for their fruition but open to something even better showing up in its place. When we ground ourselves in gratitude, it becomes even easier for positivity to flow into our lives. With the flurry of holiday excitement behind us, we can move forward into 2024 excitedly and gracefully. We hope this special Health edition of Decatur City Lifestyle will inspire you along your journey! Living a healthy life doesn’t only occur in the gym or on our plates; it also encompasses our homes, families, and relationships. I wish you and yours a blessed New Year overflowing with your dearest intentions and magical surprises. When we open up to life, life opens up to us. Cheers,

What a weirdo. Being different is a good thing. History isn’t written about normal people doing typical things. It’s made by strange men and women who defy convention, imagine a better future, and dare to be themselves. DaVinci was a vegetarian who dissected animals. Florence Nightingale had a pet owl named Athena. Einstein was a frizzy-haired patent clerk who played violin. All homeschooled. At Moonrise Decatur we have more than homeschooling families, and every one of them thinks differently. Whether it’s hiking in the woods at pm on a Monday, or a taking a spontaneous family trip to Iceland, we’re here for it. Because learning isn’t something that happens in a classroom. We believe kids learn best when given the freedom to be curious and explore the world around them. Some people call that weird. We couldn’t agree more. Find out more at moonrise.com.

“We want people to connect back to what’s fun for them, and we really think that’s the best route to a consistent movement routine.”
Clarity Fitness is not your average gym; it is a sanctuary from societal body pressures dedicated to making movement fun again. Here, working out is not about aesthetics or a number on the scale. In fact, there is a massive wall display of smashed scales at the entry of their luxurious locker rooms, an impactful reminder of where true health is found. These freeing messages punctuate the intentionally built space: from tinted mirrors in the main gym area to positive affirmations along the walls, Clarity Fitness wants every client to feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated. Abbey Griffith, founder and owner, sees downtown Decatur as the perfect place for this counter-cultural approach to fitness. This studio sets clients up for success at every turn. There are QR codes featuring video demonstrations on every piece of equipment, ensuring you never feel lost or confused. Group fitness classes are highly modifiable and named for the CONTINUED >

feelings they engender: In the Zone for strength and conditioning, Rejuvenate for gentle yoga-based movements, and Have a Blast for their epic dance classes. The messages we receive from all angles matter, and Clarity Fitness promotes body positivity, fat positivity, and body liberation. As an essential social justice movement, this mission leads to an inclusive space built for all shapes and sizes while honing in on the true definition of healthy living. This mindset shift sets the stage for everyone to honor the skin they’re in with peace and, dare I say, clarity.
Clarity Fitness
Abbey Griffith wants your body to be your teammate. While in eating disorder recovery, she sought a way to structure movement routines that avoid compulsivity and encourage positivity. She began experimenting with removing weigh-ins to focus on strength and having fun with her personal training clients. This switch from numbers and aesthetics to joyful movement and emotional liberation is what Clarity Fitness is all about. www.clarityfitness.com

Individuals come with the hope of finding a modality that provides comfort and release from their ailments. Trust Your Gut. Trust Yourself. A conversation with Decatur nutritionist, Karen Riggs. ARTICLE BY KAREN RIGGS Ph o
vis t o by : L yne t t e C. Da
K A R E N
R I G G S
Nutritionist | @karenriggsnutrition | riggsnutrition.com
HOW DOES TAKING CONTROL OF MY NUTRITION EMPOWER MY LIFE?
Taking control of nutrition implies that eating choices are out of your control and there is a strict, right vs wrong way to eat. I believe that all foods are allowed. A better approach is to gain awareness and build trust in yourself. Discovering which foods give you energy and help your brain engage and which foods improve your overall health and relieve gut issues, will help you learn to use food to empower yourself to live your best life.
HOW CAN I CREATE A BALANCED AND SUSTAINABLE MEAL PLAN THAT SUITS MY LIFESTYLE AND PREFERENCES?
Being flexible and consistent is key. Progress over perfection is key in my book. On a practical level, pick a time each week when you can plan what your major meals will be. I never grocery shop and cook on the same day, and I am all about leftovers. Start with a rainbow-colored assortment of fruits and vegetables. Add a protein (especially fish), whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, oats, whole wheat), and plant-based fats (olives/olive oil, avocados, nuts). I teach clients how to plan ahead and build their meals and snacks to help with their physical symptoms, and improve digestion and overall health. I help people learn how to use foods to feel better. When our bodies are nourished, we have the energy to do the things we love. Progress over perfection is key.

Pelvic physical therapy is a highly specialized field and a unique calling. It’s life-changing in its capacity to bring ease to essential functions and newfound joy to pleasure pursuits. Often, it is described as the missing piece in a patient’s treatment plan, as this work is not only holistically-minded but often underserved. Everyone is unique and deserves tailored therapies to address their individual goals. At Kemper Pelvic Physiotherapy, you can rest assured that you are entering an inclusive and sensitive setting where the staff is highly trained in trauma-informed care and a wide range of specialties. The pelvis is the center of our bodies, affecting many functions across our entire being. One must receive ample space and time to explore one's symptoms and health history in an environment where they are deeply listened to. This personal approach makes Kemper Pelvic Physiotherapy stand out, as each physical therapist communicates intending to calm the nervous system in a stunning setting. Everyone feels warmly welcomed here amidst ample natural lighting, heaters on every treatment table, and beautiful views of downtown Decatur from every room. Pronouns are included in all introductions and forms, and this dedication to inclusivity reflects the core values of the entire team’s therapeutic approach. The staff empowers self-efficacy and informed consent in every permission-driven appointment. Orthopedically trained, each physical therapist dives deep into your injury history and current lifestyle during the intake process; it is longer than typical, a solid ninety minutes, to provide space to dig through to the root of your pain by finding all connected instances. The goals are always individualized and focused on the activities the patient wants to get back to without pain. In the words of Physical Therapist, Dr. Laura Ross, “No goal is too small.”
While in this process, various therapies tailored to your case are implemented, including manual treatments and dry needling. This work benefits those of all gender identities and sexual orientations, as well as a broad range of physical goals. From high-level athletes to pregnant people and everyone else in between, you can discover lessened pain and increased quality of life with pelvic physiotherapy. Many patients come to this work carrying exasperation, exhaustion, and even shame. Through their treatment processes, Kemper Pelvic Physiotherapy’s physical therapists have seen patients go from depression to renewed vigor, from hopelessness to hope. Upon calling into the practice, you will speak with Janice or Jenna to match you with the ideal physical therapist for your case by taking note of your symptoms. All three practitioners, Beth, Laura, and Megan, approach this work with great passion. Beth Kemper, the practice's owner, came into the abdominal and pelvic specialty after seeing another physical therapist address a patient’s lower back pain with exceptional effectiveness through pelvic physical therapy. She saw an underutilized approach and an underserved community, then dove into her calling. Dr. Laura Ross finds this work life-changing; it is collaborative and fascinating, as pelvic health and function rely on several systemic factors, socioeconomic pressures, and personal moments to dissect and piece together. Dr. Megan Beach-Gomes, who often works with pregnant and postpartum patients, finds great joy in pinpointing someone’s elusive pain and treating it effectively. And then, it is so rewarding to see their little ones once they arrive! Kemper Pelvic Physiotherapy is a safe space where you will find impactful pain relief, an increased sense of well-being, and caring practitioners who strive for excellence. Everyone deserves quality care and high-quality living. CONTINUED >

FENG foundational SHUI BALANCE YOUR HOME AND YOUR LIFE WITH THIS ANCIENT PRACTICE.
ARTICLE BY NATALIE FOX
Feng Shui is an ancient practice that brings harmony, vitality, and life-enhancing energy into our space. We can tap into increased health and success by optimizing and balancing the chi (life force energy) that enters and exits our homes. We spoke with Decatur-based realtor turned Feng Shui expert Adrienne Thatcher for recommendations to implement this technique into our spaces in the new year.

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN
Our homes support us in all aspects of our lives. The keywords for creating a Feng Shui home are declutter, repair, and enhance. Every person has a personalized trigram chart, which you can delve into with a oneon-one session, but there are general areas we all need to pay special attention to. It’s best to start with the front entry, where the life force enters to welcome positivity into our lives. Every front door should feature a nice welcome mat in good condition, a clear pathway, and live plants. As always, first impressions matter! Next, Adrienne recommends tackling the center of your home, “the health area,” which connects all other parts of the house. Step into this space and see how you feel. Does it feel light, clean, and inspiring? If not, look for ways you can make it so. Ensure all lightbulbs are in working order, remove items you do not use or need, and maybe even enhance the space with a citrine crystal. If this feels overwhelming, start small with one drawer or one room. You can also bring in an expert for a custom reading and analysis. Adrienne performs specific calculations to address your unique home and life priorities. She utilizes the five elements of Chinese medicine to balance your home’s nine distinct areas. Your home is always speaking to you. By incorporating a Feng Shui eye, you will enhance your ability to listen to it. As your home’s energy shifts, so will yours, and all for the better.
“Feng Shui is acupuncture for your home.”
