LIFESTYLE LETTER
Celebrating the Season and the City
December 2023 PUBLISHER
Caroline Ficken | caroline.ficken@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Natalie Fox | natalie.fox@citylifestyle.com STAFF WR ITER
As 2023 draws to a close, I reflect on the stories of the past year, and the previous 200. The December edition holds a special place in our hearts as we not only gather with friends and family but also commemorate a momentous occasion – our city's bicentennial. With two centuries of community, local stories, creative endeavors, and an innovative spirit, our city's bicentennial is a testament to a community that thrives on individuality. From the pathfinders who laid the foundation to the modern forward-thinkers shaping our future, we shine a spotlight on some of the many thinkers, dreamers, and doers of Decatur. This month, surround yourself with loved ones and enjoy the bicentennial happenings around town – from parades and art exhibitions to live performances and cold-weather gatherings – 200 is no small number. And while we reflect on the story of our city, let us also consider the legacy of our home. If there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that the people of Decatur are determined to improve upon the world we live in for years to come. Thank you for being an integral part of our community's story. May this December edition fill your hearts with warmth, inspiration, and a deep appreciation for 200 years of Decatur. Here’s to more stories, more connections and more community in the coming year. Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a happy bicentennial celebration!

A CITY WORTH CELEBR ATING Photography by John Wachs
ARTICLE BY NATALIE FOX
Plans for the present seek to honor the city’s historical past and enhance Decatur’s future. Decatur is a city with a strong sense of community. Through research, focus, and resident feedback, a strategic plan is in its implementation stages to make the city even better. With an eye on equity, several programs are working together to address concerns while improving our capacity to gather. The Decatur community is known for its ability to work together. Everyone comes to the table with intelligence and a desire to develop the best outcomes; neighbors know their neighbors, and we are all connected. That is what sets our city apart. At the heart of Decatur’s growth is maintaining and building upon its inherent authenticity. From historic architecture preservation to an enhanced downtown square, it is paramount that all changes work toward bettering the residents’ everyday experience. With a holistic approach at its center, these plans developed by the City of Decatur strive to increase accessibility, affordability, and enduring enjoyment.

This event promises a full day of festivities, starting at 9:00 a.m. with a 1-mile race and ending at 7:30 p.m. after an explosive fireworks show. It’s a big birthday (200 years!) and an opportune time to celebrate Decatur’s past, present, and future. Perfect for all ages, a parade, live music, and inspiring stories will be shared. Renae Jackson, Equity & Engagement Director, looks forward to the “community coming together to not only acknowledge and celebrate where we have been but to acknowledge where we are, and how we work together to create a legacy that will be meaningful to generations to come.” The following day is the Bicentennial Celebration History Tour, where you can immerse yourself and your family in two centuries of history. 200 TREES + 200 STORIES Two programs are running in Decatur’s 200th year, enacted to ensure the city’s condition is continually improved. The 200 Trees Project works to increase the city’s tree canopy by planting new trees and nurturing existing ones by keeping them free from invasives. The 200 Stories Initiative seeks to preserve and document the voices of today’s Decatur residents to help shape the vision for our city’s future. It’s a powerful reminder that we all play a part in creating community.

THE DOWNTOWN M ASTERPLAN The last major upgrade to the Decatur Town Square was over twenty years ago. The thread running through all these efforts is the desire to gather as a community even more by making downtown accessible and ready for events. These initiatives include adding more green space, installing a permanent pavilion stage for performances, and providing public restrooms. Improved parking is on the task list, as well! Many of these changes come from direct resident feedback, which has been a vital component in the development of Decatur Square. Resident needs come to the forefront through the Engagement Squad Committee, roundtable discussions, public meetings, and online surveys. Diverse perspectives bring an opportunity to uncover commonalities, leading to a consensus wherein a vision forms that everyone can support. In the words of the Planning & Economic Development Director Angela Threadgill, “The community shapes the plan.”

Linda Harris LIFELONG CITY EMPLOYEE AND COMMUNITY ADVOCATE ARTICLE BY MARGARITA I. GIRALDO
Linda Harris, a native of Decatur, has spent her professional career building up the voices of Decatur. Born, raised and a current resident of this vibrant community, she embodies dedication, gumption and is a fierce believer in the power of information to drive change. As Harris has spent thirty-five years pouring energy into her profession, it's a challenge to highlight all of her accomplishments. Luckily, she sat down with our magazine to share the two projects she considers her proudest achievements: the Decatur Focus Newsletter and Decatur 101. Both of these projects are alive and well today. They serve as vital sources of city news that divulge important updates about its growth, development, and future. With a degree in Creative Writing and English Literature from Agnes Scott College, she went to answer the phones at the City Commission and never left! In those first years working for the City, she met Lyn Meene, then Executive Director of the Downtown Development, and both forged a close relationship where Lyn focused on economic development and Linda on community development. Armed with her communications prowess, Linda began to envision how, through different media efforts, she could begin to cultivate community through civic engagement. From creating the first city website in 1996 to helping Downtown Decatur become the community living room it is today, she’s seen and has played a pivotal role in how outreach efforts shape a sense of place.

“Start Where You Are.”
“Outreach is a fundamental part of the fabric of Decatur and is ingrained in the City’s culture.”
For over twenty years, the Decatur Focus newsletter has been regarded as an essential guide to what is happening in the city. More than just a list of things to do and see, it is a space where the City communicates with its residents, highlighting fundamental civic and community news. This could be an interview with a person or important deadlines that residents should keep on their calendars. Because community was and is paramount to Linda's work she regards this as one of her greatest contributions in her career. She shared that it came from a simple motive, "why don't we tell people things?”. It is evident how her DNA exudes communication and how it brings people together. It's a publication that has grown with Decatur and boasts many contributing writers from all walks of life representing the diverse landscape that we have all come to love about Decatur. With other City colleagues, Linda co-created Decatur 101. It is an eight-week program whose goal is to create involved and informed citizens. Participants learn that the local government has a face and they witness the hard work that it takes to manage the city of Decatur. Individuals who enroll learn about the city’s history, and the background of its public works, meet its department heads, and essentially become Decatur Ambassadors. After participating in Decatur 101, some have run for office, served on volunteer boards and commissions, and created neighborhood organizations and other activities that allow residents to engage and make an impact. There are even alumni programs that bring back past cohorts so people stay current on what is happening since their group's graduation. She's worked on other initiatives like the 2014 Better Together community conversation, focusing on equity, inclusion, diversity, and affordable housing. Most recently, the Bicentennial Celebration has been her focus, and together with Renae Jackson, Decatur's first Equity and Engagement Director, they are collecting 200 Stories to celebrate the beautiful kaleidoscope of lives that showcase Decatur's multicultural and diverse population. Linda's generosity and heart will be missed by many. We know 2024 will bring a close to her City chapter but her legacy and impact are timeless.

Home for the Holidays: Make it Maximalist
ARTICLE BY DOROTHY MCGHEE
HOW TO EXUDE OPULENCE WHILE STYLING YOUR HOLIDAY HOME DECOR.
Holiday decor should elicit a feeling of joy, abundance, opulence, and luxury. Design trends are leaning into more biophilic-inspired colors like browns, oranges, creams, and other neutrals. I recommend following those trends to keep your holiday decor aesthetic, warm, and inviting. Instead of your mother's multi-colored Christmas lights, consider picking one jewel tone to highlight. This jewel tone, mixed with classic warm white Christmas bulbs, helps to create a chic yet festive backdrop to your holiday gatherings. Imagine how opulent a satin burnt orange ornament would look against the natural green of your fir tree. When it comes to Christmas, maximalism is always welcomed. Layering your tablescape with metallic chargers, playing with height in your candelabras, and going over the top with your centerpieces exude luxury and abundance. All these elements draw the eye and create an experience for your senses, resulting in a holiday season no one will ever forget.

L’ARCHE ATLANTA https://www.larcheatlanta.org/ Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) can be subject to enormous amounts of isolation from society. This leaves many with no community and taxes caregivers as their sole support. L’Arche Atlanta fills a massive void for those with IDD and their families as they provide homes and events where adults with IDD and without come together to share experiences. Whether it’s through live or virtual events, people support one another; this relieves caregivers because they know their families are being uplifted and looked after. In addition to community services, L’Arche also leads advocacy efforts and recently completed an important campaign known as “6000 Waiting” to bring awareness of a list of people waiting for home. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 30
O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
