In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. Founded by Frank Karas in 1934, Floor Covering Warehouse has been a staple family business in the Fairfield County area for almost 90 years, providing for families and their flooring needs over the course of generations. Gregg Karas, the current owner, shared his family’s legacy, detailing the progress and the journey of Floor Covering Warehouse over the past decades. When Frank Karas first started his business in the 30s, it was called the 4 in 1 Shop. Years later, his son Frank came into the business after returning from

serving time overseas. When his other son Edward graduated college, Frank’s two sons bought the family business from their father. Frank continued to work at Floor Covering Warehouse until he passed away in the 70s, and his wife Stella worked for many years thereafter. In 1999, Gregg Karas purchased the family business from his father and his uncle and has been carrying on the family legacy his grandfather started. When asked about the best part of running a family-owned business, Gregg stated, “Carrying on a CONTINUED >

legacy, being in a business almost 90 years. Surviving many, many different recessions, downturns in the economy, and still being here after all these years. There’s something to be said for that.” What makes Floor Covering Warehouse stand out from potential competitors is the fact that the business has been kept within one family since its creation. In a small town like Darien that prioritizes local businesses, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were surely felt. Gregg shared that the pandemic did have an impact on the business, like it did with many other local businesses. “People were home. They wanted to do projects. Then, once Covid lifted and people’s pocketbooks lifted, it was off to the races for a couple years,” stated Gregg. Gregg had one message to share with Darien Lifestyle: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Though it may sound cliché, it is certainly true. Despite its name, Floor Covering Warehouse is much more than just a warehouse. The business has a modern-day showroom, providing customers with first-hand information

about the services and products Floor Covering Warehouse provides. As the business has changed over the years, the demand continues to change as well. “I think the fastest growing product that I’ve seen in my lifetime in the business has been the evolution of these luxury vinyl floorings,” Gregg said. Floor Covering Warehouse offers customers modern and up-to-date flooring options that fit their design needs, adapting to the changes in trends over the past decades—all the way from traditional sheet vinyl kitchens to waterproof flooring and vinyl tiles. Gregg shared, “It’s the amount of time that it’s been in business and the fact that it’s been in the same family—my family—for three generations; You don’t see a lot of generational businesses.” Over the course of 90 years, generations of Fairfield county families have come to Floor Covering Warehouse for their services. Their presence is unlike many businesses in the area, as their practice and tradition has been curated over years of familial collaboration and support from its community.

DL: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? AC: My journey might surprise you. While I have enjoyed photography as a hobby my entire life, I spent the majority of my life pushing that passion aside while I worked in corporate. I got my undergrad at Temple University, my masters at Sacred Heart Business School, and then worked at fortune 100 companies for over a decade. I always had this itch inside of me that I was meant to combine my business background with my creative passions. My Grandmother always told me that life is too short and you have to do what you love. So finally, several years ago I got the courage to start making that dream a reality. I worked tirelessly to grow my passion from hobby, to side hustle, to a full-time business. It was so worth it, when I was ready to make the jump to full time, I never looked back.

DL: WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? AC: I get my inspiration from my clients. The work that I do supports the success and growth of local and small businesses, who are the core of our community. I am so fortunate to work with incredible people. From business owners who put their whole world and passion into building and growing their business. Who get out of their comfort zone and in-front of the camera because nothing will stand in their way of following their passion. To interior designers and architects who create incredible homes and spaces for their clients. I get to capture the outcome of all of that hard work. The opportunity to serve them in capturing their creations in a way that truly values the work and skill that they put into it.

DL: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SHOOT YOU HAVE EVER DONE BEFORE? AC: It is too hard to pick a favorite! I have done hundreds of photoshoots and they are all so uniquely amazing. But my favorite feeling is working with repeat clients. Whether they are in my branding membership with quarterly photoshoots, or interior designers who I see time and time again to capture projects. These clients are more like team-members to me. It is an incredible feeling to be part of their business journey and help them achieve their goals.

DL: IF YOU COULD OFFER ANY PIECE OF ADVICE TO ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? Don’t just go with the crowd or hop on a trend in the industry. Be clear on who you are, what your skills are, and how you can make a difference with the unique talents and experience that you have. My background and work experience is in the corporate business world, but I am also an artist and creative at heart. I have blended these experiences which led me to a photography business that allows me to serve other businesses. We are all so unique, it is important believe in yourself and to value your own skillset so that you can truly serve others in a meaningful way. November marks a time of comfort, food and a semi new favorite tradition of Friendsgiving. Dr. Kelsey Reeder, local registered dietitian doctor of clinical nutrition, is sharing intuitive eating tips for your Friendsgiving Feast this year!

1. EAT BREAKFAST Prior to big events centering around food, it is common to restrict calories earlier in the day; however, maintaining a normal meal pattern can prevent a ravenous appetite when sitting down for the big meal.

2. BE PRESENT Yes, Thanksgiving is about the feast, but it is also about being grateful for the individuals in your life and those gathered around the table. Remove the stress of what to eat, and especially the stress centered around “what not to eat,” and be present at the table.

3. HONOR YOUR HUNGER CUES Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving feasts are often associated with the uncomfortable fullness feeling. To prevent reaching this point of fullness this year, start listening and honoring your hunger cues before the date of your feast. This means, listening to your body and not “pushing through” hunger. This includes staying mindful as you are eating so you can appreciate the food and listen to when your body’s signaling when you are starting to become full. In early stages of adopting this practice, it can be difficult to identify signs of hunger and I recommend working directly with a registered dietitian. CONTINUED >

NOVEMBER SEASONAL PRODUCE: Acorn Squash, Apples, Beets, Brussels Sprouts, Butternut Squash, Chard, Cranberries, Delicata Squash, Kabocha Squash, Kale, Parsnips, Pears, Persimmons, Pomegranates, Porcini Mushrooms, Spaghetti Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Turnips If you’re looking for an extra and nutritious side to bring to your Friendsgiving meal, consider making this roasted butternut squash recipe! Butternut squash is not only in season in November, but is great tasting. RECIPE

4. PARTICIPATE IN JOYFUL MOVEMENT One of the principles of Intuitive Eating is engaging in types of movements that you enjoy. This piece of advice does not mean that you have to exercise to “earn” your calories that you are going to consume later in the day, but instead to participate in any form of movement that brings you joy. This can be something like tossing the football around or going for a walk. Additionally, the light movement after eating your meal will assist in the digestive process.

5. ENJOY THE SEASONAL FOOD Fall, and specifically Thanksgiving, has a bounty of seasonal food items including November produce as well as seasonal desserts and dishes! Allowing yourself to have your favorite Thanksgiving dessert is actually honoring your body more than if you were craving it and restricted yourself from it.

ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400ºF 2. Chop butternut squash into ¼ inch cubes and place in a bowl 3. In bowl, generously drizzle in olive oil, fresh rosemary, and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon 4. Place butternut squash onto a baking sheet and place in oven for 15 minutes 5. After 15 minutes, turn the squash over and place in oven for an additional 10-15 minutes. 5. Option to top with additional rosemary and brown sugar cinnamon to taste!

To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.
