March - Home and Design

March 2022 PUBLISHER

Kristin Burnell | kristin.burnell@citylifestyle.com

Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. This month we sat down with powerhouse, Bethenny Frankel and learned how she manages to do it all and hope that it inspires you to take the next step on the project (whether personal or professional) you have been thinking about. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we draw inspiration from Meredith Goforth, the founder behind Prim Living and give you tips to help put together your home and help to design your best life! Afterall, an organized home is a happy home. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

BEING BETHENNY A Modern-Day Renaissance Woman

ARTICLE BY EMILY LIEBERT PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA HAILE

Don’t ask Bethenny Frankel what she does—because the real question is, what doesn’t she do? As a self-made entrepreneur, her career description ranges from multi-New York Times bestselling author and TV producer, to Founder & CEO of Skinnygirl, a lifestyle brand boasting practical solutions for women. Additionally, she’s launched her own eyewear collection called Bethenny Eyewear, and a new line of wine labeled Forever Young. Not to mention her real estate transactions, her recent HBO Max business competition series The Big Shot with Bethenny, and a partnership with iHeart Radio to create Just B with Bethenny Frankel, her runaway hit podcast. Wait, there’s more. Bethenny’s tenth book, BUSINESS IS PERSONAL: The Truth About What it Takes to Be Successful While Staying True to Yourself, including anecdotes, personal stories, and advice on how to succeed professionally (plus a range of other topics), will publish this May. Sounds like a full plate, right? Not for this powerhouse. Bethenny also devotes an exceptional amount of her time to giving back. Her BStrong program is a disaster relief initiative that provides real time emergency assistance to individuals and their families in crisis. BStrong’s mission is to embolden people struck with tragedy by providing gift cards, emergency aid, food, and shelter. The breadth of her philanthropic efforts is astounding. Yet, even with all of this to oversee, Bethenny’s private life is thriving too. She’s been engaged to businessman and film producer Paul Bernon since March 2021 and her most important “job” of all is being a present and nurturing mother to her 11-yearold daughter, Bryn. We caught up with Bethenny to learn more about how she manages her one-woman empire and what really makes her tick. It might just surprise you… CONTINUED >

YOU FOUNDED SKINNYGIRL IN 2009 AND SOLD THE COCKTAIL PORTION OF THE COMPANY A COUPLE OF YEARS LATER. WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT INVOLVEMENT WITH THE BRAND AND WHERE DO YOU SEE IT HEADING IN THE FUTURE? BF: I'm not involved in the cocktail brand anymore. The cocktails were an instant success, because I created a whole category by being the first person to use the word skinny. Suddenly it was on every menu. With that said, I still own 100% of the Skinnygirl brand, which is thriving and growing. With the other categories— (including cookware, bakeware, drinkware, supplements, apparel, and food & drink) —I started small and I’m growing them authentically and organically each year. So, it's a different trajectory. I don’t just slap my name on things. I'm very involved, very connected, and very attached. It's not easy to constantly have to be promoting, but it's also what makes it genuine. As a result, the brand has great loyalty, which is important to me.

IT FEELS LIKE THERE ARE A ZILLION PODCASTS OUT THERE, INCLUDING MANY FOCUSED ON BUSINESS, WHAT SETS JUST B APART FROM THE PACK? WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GUEST? BF: The truth of the matter is, I've been fortunate to have amazing guests like Hillary Clinton, Matthew McConaughey, and so many more. Our conversations are what make the podcast successful, which includes my natural curiosity about a person's story and the questions I ask. People keep saying to me, “No one has ever asked me that before. I'm going to use that.” My listeners are also obsessed with my rants. I could be talking about something very serious like divorce and something ridiculous like cilantro in the same sentence and people love them equally. The rant has become a breakout star. I got a massive response to the one I did on divorce—thousands of letters.

14

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

As far as the guest, it doesn’t have to be somebody rich and famous whom everybody knows. For example, I’m interviewing Dorothy Hamill; she was the face of a sport, but she’s not the same as having Cameron Diaz. I choose the individuals I want to speak to. I don’t do what I think will sell. I don't rat people out. I don't go for the low-hanging fruit. People need to trust me. It could be, with any luck, Warren Buffett or Mark Zuckerberg, or someone much lesser known as long as they’ve built something, and I find them interesting. My podcast is a passion project. When I started it, I had no idea that there was any metric. I didn’t know that we could be the top five of anything. I didn't even know there was a top five. I did it because I like talking to people, and I'm excited to hear what they have to stay. I’ve remained true to that.

YOU’VE INVESTED IN AND FLIPPED MANY HOMES. HOW DID THIS INTEREST DEVELOP? AND WHAT DRAWS YOU TO A SPECIFIC PROPERTY? BF: When I bought my first big apartment in New York City, I didn’t know I could completely customize it. I didn’t realize you could pick your faucets or your caulk color. I was always the person who lived in a studio apartment that you bought the way it was, and the closet was the way it was, and it was really glamorous if you switched out your microwave and got some nice towels. So, I ended up renovating that apartment, and I really had a knack for it. I’m very decisive about it—the way I am in business. Right away, I know what I want to do and what I don't want to do. I could think longer on a bowl of pasta at a restaurant. I paid around $5 million for the place and sold it for $7 million in one day, all cash, full ask. After that, I renovated another place, kept gaining more and more experience, and I continue to invest in properties and flip them in markets that I predict will go through the roof. I do really well because I'm good at getting things done economically. I'm good at using space. And I'm creative and fast. Real estate is not a business for me. I couldn't do that. There are too many details involved and I’m too organized, but I do really like it as another passion project. I like looking. I’m always curious CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . and love to calculate that something is going to increase in value or that a specific area is going to be hot. If I see something that I feel is such a deal I can't pass it up, I’ll buy it. It's an investment, but—at the same time—I would never purchase a home I wouldn't live in myself.

YOUR COMMITMENT TO PHILANTHROPIC RELIEF EFFORTS ACROSS THE GLOBE HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE. AS A CELEBRITY, YOU COULD HAVE SAT BACK AND THROWN MONEY AT THESE DISASTERS. WHAT INCITED YOU TO ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES AND TAKE ON THE ACTUAL WORK? BF: If you throw money at these things, you might as well flush it down the toilet because the big companies that post links to

16

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

donate can't work as immediately, as hands-on, and in such a lean way. With us, 100% goes to the effort. We’re right there while it's still going on, in many cases, and our model is efficient; we execute. Nobody has been able to do what we’ve been able to do on the same budget. With these major organizations, you're just giving your money to someone who’s going to take a large percentage of it; it's very bureaucratic. No disrespect, but we don't do that. I don’t want any awards. I don't care about that stuff. My only focus is getting the money from the people donating to the people suffering; it's very simple. If you care about your money, treat it like a business. What is your ROI? You wouldn't buy a stock and just throw the money in the air. You have to know where your money is going, and we’ve

been very transparent from the beginning. I don't pretend that I'm an expert. We figure out what the problem is, what people need, and we formulate a plan. Sometimes our goal is to raise $100 thousand and we hit $3 million. Things change based on what's actually happening, but we never make promises we can't deliver on.

IN AN INTERVIEW WITH FORBES YOU SAID, “IN MY LIFE, I ONLY EVER WRITE A BOOK IF IT’S JUST SORT OF DYING TO COME OUT OF ME.” WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO AUTHOR YOUR FIRST BUSINESS BOOK? AND WHAT CAN READERS EXPECT TO LEARN FROM IT? BF: Through talking to so many entrepreneurs on my podcast and also discussing so many of my own stories, I found that people kept saying, “It's not personal, it’s business.” And I kept thinking, business is personal, which really inspired the book. It sounds ridiculous and tiresome, but when you do a juice fast, at the beginning you might be hungry, then you cleanse for a couple of days and all of a sudden you're not hungry anymore. Once you start to get hungry again, the juice fast is over. It’s kind of like the book process, you're writing and you're expelling all of this information. You're up at night remembering these stories and takeaways—everything you’ve learned along the way. Then, just like that, one day you're not doing that anymore. The book is done. It’s really me pouring out the majority of the crazy stuff that's happened to me in business, which is so great because it's a roadmap that people can learn from.

WHAT DOES MOTHERHOOD MEAN TO YOU? BF: Everything. It's the point of entry for every single thing I do. It’s always about Bryn. The second that a business opportunity gets offered to me, my whole team knows that if it’s a day I have Bryn, it’s off the table. It's probably slowed my business down or impacted it in a negative way at some point, but that’s what you do when you have a child, because you want to be the best role model you can be. Motherhood affects your whole outlook on the world—your safety, your health, all of it.

I can’t live without… Obviously my daughter Bryn, my fiancé Paul, and my dogs, but superficially…matcha lattes, kombucha, salty snacks, my Biologique Recherche P50 1970 lotion, my weighted blanket, my bed, my own bathroom, and my own separate closet. My last meal would be… Eggplant parmesan with angel hair pasta. I’m currently binge watching… All Narcos, all the time. My ideal vacation spot is… Miraval or Rosewood Mayakoba. I also love St. Barts and Portofino, Italy. Two items on my bucket list are… Visiting Morocco and hosting Saturday Night Live MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / DA R I E N C T

DL: CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? NZ: I believe all women have both a playful and sophisticated personality and my designs reflect bringing out both. I love the juxtaposition of beautiful amazing quality precious metals and mixed media. I started my entirely handmade artisanal jewelry business to celebrate and elevate women. I truly feel if you make an effort to look good, you feel good about yourself, and the simple act of accessorizing makes you look effortlessly put together.

DL: WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS UNIQUE FROM OTHERS? NZ: Each and every collection is entirely handmade from design concept to packaging. I draw ideas from my proximity of the streets of Manhattan to worldwide travel. There is nothing more inspiring than women owning their look and having confidence!

DL: WHAT IS SOMETHING SHOPPERS/READERS MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOUR SHOP? NZ: Forlanya means "for my daughter" in Hungarian. My grandmother, Eva, was a cosmetologist for elite socialists in Budapest and passed on her love of beauty and fashion to me, and I hope to pass that on to my daughter Alessandra.

DL: WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE? NZ: My website (forlanya.com) shows my most popular best sellers in each of the categories with some fun surprises coming up for Spring and Summer 2022, but I love working individually to create and design one of a kind custom pieces with customers. I am accessible at email (Nicole@ forlanya.com) or through direct message on instagram (@forlanyajewelry) for a truly special piece!

DL: THE IMPORTANCE OF LOCAL BUSINESSES, IS MORE VITAL THAN EVER AT THIS TIME, WHY SHOULD PEOPLE SHOP AT YOUR STORE? Happiness is an Organized Closet PRIM LIVING AGRESSES THE MESSES Meredith Goforth

ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG

The thing I love about “organized” is that it’s (almost) as fabulous as redecorating but far, far cheaper. It makes me feel clean and productive. I find cool things I forgot I had and throw out stupid things I forgot why I had. The thing I hate about “organized” is that it’s hard to achieve with three kids and a life, despite my heroic efforts and a label maker. Kids can’t read labels. Nor can teenagers, evidently. Plus, I didn't do a great job of it. Meredith Goforth shares my concerns and has a knack for taming the teeming detritus we cram into closets and desks. She founded PRIM Living (PRIM) to address the messiness in our lives and make the wayward areas of our homes tidy and - confirmed by a perusal of her website - elegant.

“We go in with a plan, but it’s more like exploratory surgery,” she explains. “We never know what they’ll have.” — Meredith Gofor th

When I first asked Meredith to come to my home and transform a drawer full of never-used-but-I-might-need-someday utensils, I suddenly noticed my kitchen through the eyes of a fastidious outsider. Every crack, stained dishtowel, and ugly appliance seemed larger and more offensive than it had appeared moments before. Surely someone as neat as Meredith would scoff! When describing this newfound insecurity to her she quickly explains, “I like things to be in place, but I’m normal! If you came to my home on a Sunday night [after a weekend with her three young boys] I’d have a panic attack.” Meredith used to be a bookings editor, managing thousands of details for cover shoots and fashion stories. So organizing thousands of things: pantries, playrooms, closets - pretty much anything but personal photographs - comes naturally. Making everything look lovely, well, that’s the great luck of having good taste. The first step is a consultation. Meredith arrives with a fellow organizer, “We’ll

26

figure out a plan and get a sense of the client’s aesthetic - modern, classic, chic, traditional…” she says. Like everything else, containers and other organizational products come in a myriad of styles. Next, they come in and remove everything from the targeted problem area. “We go in with a plan, but it’s more like exploratory surgery,” she explains. “We never know what they’ll have.” Then edits. Even if the client thinks they’ve edited… well, they usually need another one. Lastly, PRIM does its thing, arranging items by color, style, product. Labeling containers, baskets, or bottles. She figures out “intuitive, designated spot[s]” that “work wonders for maintenance,” even in rooms that kids frequent, and where they’re expected to help clean up. Once the organizational dust abates, the client is left with everything beautifully in its place, which the client can easily restore when mayhem, once again, ensues.

NEW YOU IN 2022 ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL

Fitness and health coach Nicole Glor strives to motivate individuals to achieve their exercise and health goals. Through a series of her NikkiFitness branded videos and books, Nicole’s high energy motivates individuals to push themselves out of their comfort zones. We asked Nicole to share her top fitness tips for those starting a new exercise routine or those looking to switch it up at home or in the gym! Tip #1 from fitness expert Nicole Glor: Resolutions are time to wipe away regrets from the last calendar year and begin with a fresh outlook. When setting your resolution, ask yourself, what is your intention for 2022? Are your goals spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, social, or all of the above? If your goal is spiritual, emotional or stress relief, resolve to start your day with a mindful meditation. I always say “stretch your lungs before you stretch your legs,” and taking slow, long deep breaths along with focusing on mantras like, “let go, go with the flow, be present and be grateful.” (The mantras will keep your mind from wandering.) Tip #2: Meditate more often Meditation in the morning sets the tone for the day, makes you grounded, in the moment, and in tune with what is important. For beginner meditators, I recommend apps like Calm or Head Space for 10 minute guided meditation. If you have more time, add one of my free yoga classes by subscribing to the Nikkifitness Channel on YouTube, you’ll breathe and get the blood flowing, then end in a savasana meditation (final relaxation pose). Tip #3: Multitask your workouts If your goal is a physical resolution, like weight loss, toning up, rehabbing from an injury, extending your life

28

AT H LE T E LIF E | FITNESS

or just tapping into feel-good endorphins, be sure to multitask your workouts to save time, and cross train. Multitasking works by doing upper body toning, lower body strength, core and cardio all at once, like biceps curls along with lunges in one move or burpee push-ups. Multitasking can cut workout time in half, making it more realistic to fit in your schedule. Mentally, adding cardio into your workouts brings energizing, feel-good endorphins so you are guaranteed a good mood before you finish! Yoga and focused breathing bring about a peaceful “afterglow” that can last all day! Tip #4: Switch up your nutrition Nutrition is an important component to your exercise schedule. Keeping a workout and food diary will keep you in track with my next bit of advice: instead of doing a cleanse, add more water and vegan foods to your life. Food is medicine and superfoods that are not processed will do wonders for weight loss and longevity. If your resolutions are social, like more post-pandemic gatherings or cutting down on social drinking, it’s good for you to chose many non-drinking dates like afternoon tea, hikes, and group fitness classes when you are planning to spend time with friends. Tip #5: Put intentions into action The final step is implementing your intentions! Do this locally by planned weekly walking or running at Greenwich Beach with a friend. “Forest bathing” on the Mianus River trail will connect you to nature and your friends, while providing exercise, hitting the “all of the above” goal category with no regrets the next day, or year!

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.

Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
