LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter from the Editor Style is certainly reflected in what we wear (and let's be honest—we'll never say no to a great outfit). It's also shown in how we live—in the homes we create, the friendships we nurture, the small businesses we support, and the moments we make time for. It's found in our values, the kindness we extend to others, and the gratitude we carry each day. Those are the things that never go out of style. This month, we set out to capture this fuller picture. What started as a leap of faith has become one of Cypress' newest gathering places. In an age of online shopping, Callahan's is proving that people still crave something more: connection. Discover how owner Sydnee Gee is building a boutique where community, hospitality and genuine relationships are always in fashion. Meet Sandee June, the nurse who spent nearly three decades caring for others before following an unexpected calling to the stage. Her journey to becoming one of Texas Country's rising stars is a reminder that it's never too late to embrace the dream that's been waiting for you. We also visited Closets by Design, where owner Brandon Hansen is helping homeowners create spaces that bring a little more order—and a little more peace—to everyday life. His work is proof that thoughtful design isn't just about what others see, but about creating a home that works beautifully for the people who live in it. For local mom and entrepreneur Lauren Oakes, celebrating life's little moments has become her calling. Through Celebrate Forward, she creates curated birthday experiences that help families make memories and remind every child just how loved they are. But the heart of her business may be the celebrations happening behind the scenes. Thanks to local instructor and event coordinator Michelle Tinney, a centuries-old game is finding new life in Cypress. She's proving Mahjong's greatest reward isn't winning—it's the community built around the table. Discover how this timeless tradition is bringing neighbors together, creating lasting friendships and showing it's never too late to learn something new. As you enjoy this issue, don't forget to mark your calendar—Readers' Choice voting opens September 15! We can't wait to see our community rally around the local businesses! Cast your vote and help recognize the people, places, and businesses that make our community so special. L AU R A SA N C H E ZQ UA N , M A N AG I N G E D I TO R @CYPRESSLIFESTYLE

BUILDING MORE THAN A BOUTIQUE FASHION, FRIENDSHIP AND COMMUNITY IN THE HEART OF CYPRESS ARTICLE BY MEGAN EWING | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUNNY RAJABI

T R E N D SE T T E R | SHO P P IN G
When Sydnee Gee opened the doors to Callahan’s, she wasn’t just introducing another boutique to Cypress—she was creating the kind of place she had always hoped existed: one where shopping feels personal, families feel welcome and neighbors become friends. “It’s the most fun job,” Gee said. “I get to talk to people, hear their stories and get to know them.” That sense of connection is at the heart of Callahan’s, a locally owned boutique offering women’s clothing, gifts, home décor, children’s items, men’s products and locally inspired game day apparel. But the shop’s story begins long before its first customers walked through the doors. A Baylor University graduate with a degree in kinesiology, Gee originally envisioned a career as a physical education teacher. Instead, she found herself teaching first grade before stepping away from the classroom to stay home with her growing family. Today, she and her husband are raising two young sons and are expecting a daughter. CONTINUED >

The idea for Callahan’s emerged in late 2024 during a season of change. While her husband was reevaluating his career path, Gee proposed something entirely unexpected. “I’ve always loved fashion and helping people,” she said. “I just thought, ‘What if we do this?’” The answer from her husband was simple: “Okay, I trust you.” That leap of faith set a whirlwind year in motion. After months of paperwork, searching for the right location and transforming an empty space into the boutique they had imagined, Callahan’s opened just before the start of the school year. Gee admits opening day came with plenty of nerves. “I was so scared,” she said. “I kept thinking, ‘What if no one comes?’” Instead, the boutique was welcomed with enthusiastic support from the Cypress community. Friends, family and first-time shoppers filled the store, affirming that the risk had been worth taking. “It was just the coolest thing to see that we brought something people wanted here,” she said.

Today, Callahan’s reflects the values that inspired its creation. Gee describes the boutique as family-friendly and faith-centered, with thoughtful touches throughout the store. Children can play in a dedicated area while parents browse, toys are available in fitting rooms to keep little ones occupied, and wide aisles accommodate strollers. Faith also quietly shapes the atmosphere. Christian gifts are displayed throughout the boutique, uplifting music fills the space and encouraging Bible verses are posted in the employee area. “My faith has been the root of all of this,” Gee said. “There have been so many times where I’ve thought, ‘I don’t know how we’re going to get through this,’ but every time, we’ve been provided for.” That welcoming environment extends beyond shopping. Callahan’s regularly hosts events including needlepoint and Mahjong classes, along with summer story times for
children—transforming the boutique into a gathering place as much as a retail store. “We want people to come, bring the people they love and have a good time,” Gee said. “We want them to leave happy.” Even selecting merchandise comes down to creating that experience. While women’s apparel remains the boutique’s most popular category, Gee carefully curates items she believes customers will genuinely enjoy, balancing fresh finds with products shoppers continue to request. Still, she says the relationships matter more than the sales. Whether she’s remembering a customer shopping for her daughter’s graduation or hearing someone say they found their new favorite store, those everyday conversations are reminders that she is on the right path. shopatcallahans.com S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . T HE A R T OF OR G A NI Z AT ION LOCALLY OWNED CLOSETS BY DESIGN BRINGS CUSTOM ORGANIZATION AND FIRST-CLASS SERVICE TO CYPRESS HOMES
ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE PARNELL

M UST SE E | HO ME + DESIGN
For Cypress homeowners drowning in cluttered closets, overstuffed garages, or laundry rooms with a single sad cabinet, help is closer than they think. Closets by Design, the largest custom closet and home organization company in North America with more than 65 locations across the US and Canada, has found a natural fit in the Cypress area, according to owner Brandon Hansen.
"With so many homes in Cypress, new and not as new, there is a high demand for our custom systems," Hansen said. New homes will often have large closets and laundry rooms but very basic buildouts, he explained, while older homes tend to have sagging hang rods and shelves. "Many people have unique storage needs. And pretty much everyone wants to get more out of the space they have." Hansen said the client experience is designed to feel effortless from the very first call. "When you call, you talk to a real person, usually after just one ring!" he said. A design consultant visits the home within a day or two, and the entire process happens in that single visit. "Everything is custom and priced separately. The client chooses what is in and what is out; they are in full control of the investment amount." Before the visit ends, paperwork is finalized, a deposit is collected, and installation is scheduled. "No waiting around for a quote!" The company also offers flexible financing, including what Hansen calls "a fantastic Wells Fargo partnership" with no interest for 12 to 18 months. Installation day typically arrives about a month later, and clients can count on seeing familiar faces. "Our installers are all employees, no subcontractors," Hansen said. "They arrive in a company van, wear identification, and are polite, professional, and clean." Every completed system comes with a lifetime warranty. "If anything happens to their system down the line, we come and address it at no cost!"
Asked what sets Closets by Design apart from other custom storage companies, Hansen didn't hesitate. "No one else has our value, our combination of quality and pricing," he said, pointing to steel rods, shelf pins, and industrial-grade engineered wood as standard materials. Being part of a large franchise network gives the company leverage with suppliers, he said, savings that get passed on to clients, "and our clients get the customer service experience of a small business." Everything is manufactured locally. "We manufacture right here, locally, and only Closets by Design employees step foot in our clients' homes." Most clients, Hansen said, share one of two struggles: not enough space, or space that isn't organized well. He discussed familiar scenes: oversized primary closets with just a couple of rods, garages so full the cars sit outside, and home offices "pieced together with folding tables." He emphasized that the fix is always collaborative. "It's essential that we are with the client helping them the entire time. We do not abandon them to try and figure out an emailed quote on their own!" CONTINUED >

With nearly 100 projects completed monthly across North Houston, standout transformations are plentiful, Hansen said, from a custom teacup display to a home library finished in the company's signature indigo blue and a closet island built around a client's own hardware. Looking ahead, Hansen said the company is introducing new finishes through its Curate accessory line and simply keeping pace with demand. "We are just adding more vans to keep up." houston.closetsbydesign.com

Meet Country Artist Sandee June For most of her adult life, Sandee June's uniform consisted of scrubs, comfortable shoes and long shifts caring for others. Today, the lifelong Texan is more likely to be found wearing handcrafted boots, a carefully chosen stage outfit and a guitar slung over her shoulder. It's a remarkable second act. Born in Galveston and raised in Santa Fe, Texas, June spent nearly three decades as a registered nurse, specializing in cardiothoracic surgery before later moving into recovery room nursing. Music had always lived quietly in her heart, but it wasn't until her children were grown and her grandchildren arrived that she finally gave herself permission to try something new. "I actually did everything backwards," June said with a laugh. "I started my family first, then went back to nursing school with four children. Then, after I turned 50, I decided to learn to play guitar." She taught herself to play guitar through YouTube videos, took online vocal lessons, started attending open mic nights and eventually released her first single during the pandemic. What began as a personal challenge has evolved into one of Texas Country's most inspiring success stories. Over the past year alone, she has celebrated three consecutive No. 1 songs on the Texas charts, culminating with her latest charttopper, "June's Honky Tonk Moon." She also earned New Female Vocalist of the Year honors at the 2026 Texas Regional Radio Music Awards.
26
I NSP IR E D BY | ENTERTAIN ME N T
During her award acceptance speech, June made a point of mentioning that she began her music career later in life – a message she hopes resonates with anyone who's convinced they've missed their opportunity. "My mama always said, 'Honey, don't die with your music still inside,' and my daddy always said, 'I don't care how old you get, don't ever stop learning something new,'" she said. "I really want to inspire other people. I don't know where this journey is taking me, but I'm just going to let God open whatever door He sees fit, and I'm going to walk right through it." That authenticity extends far beyond her music. June's stage wardrobe reflects the same grounded confidence that has become her trademark. Rather than chasing flashy trends, she prefers timeless country style that feels genuine. "I like to stand out, but still be conservative," she explained. "I like to stay classy and stylish and true to country." Once she chooses the outfit, the accessories follow. One piece is always with her – a delicate cross necklace given to her years ago by her husband, Ed. "It just gives me comfort," she added. "If I'm not wearing it, I usually put it in my pocket. It gets rid of any nerves." She also carries another treasured keepsake – a worn guitar pick she's used since teaching herself to play. "I've used that same guitar pick for every single show I've ever done," added June.
While fans know June for her performances, her creativity is equally evident inside her home, where her music room has become both a sanctuary and a source of inspiration. Filled with warm lighting, rich colors, vintage treasures and meaningful family heirlooms, the room feels less like a studio and more like a place where stories come alive. "I love warm colors and lots of lamps," she said. "It creates a moody, really nice vibe. The ambiance sets the tone for music and creating." Nearly every piece carries a memory. A velvet tie-dye artwork her mother created when June was just five years old serves as the room's focal point. "If it could speak," she said, "the stories it would tell, and the music it's heard." Those personal touches, much like June herself, blend Texas roots with heartfelt authenticity. For a woman who once hung up her scrubs thinking one chapter had ended, life has revealed something unexpected: sometimes the most meaningful calling arrives after you've already lived an entire career. And for Sandee June, that new chapter is only getting started. sandeejunemusic.com

Pass the
Party Forward For Lauren Oakes, every child deserves to feel celebrated. That simple belief is at the heart of Celebrate Forward, a locally owned business dedicated to creating personalized birthday celebrations that allow families to slow down, make memories, and focus on what matters most. The inspiration for Celebrate Forward began at home. "After becoming a mom, I wanted to celebrate every milestone in my son's life," Oakes says. "When his first birthday came around, I planned a celebration that was over the top in the best way and I haven't stopped creating ever since."
Lauren with husband Kevin, and son Hampton

Her love of creativity, combined with 13 years working in education, shaped a business with a purpose beyond party planning. "One thing I've learned is that every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated," she says. That philosophy led Oakes to create her signature party boxes—beautifully coordinated kits filled with themed décor that make it easy for families to host memorable celebrations, regardless of their budget or schedule. Celebrate Forward also offers custom party favors, personalized decorations, and full-service party planning that includes design, setup, and vendor coordination, giving parents the opportunity to enjoy the celebration right alongside their child. No matter the package, personalization is always the priority. "I don't believe celebrations should feel generic. Every child has their own personality, interests, and story, and I love bringing those details to life," Oakes says. From favorite characters and colors to custom banners, cake toppers, family photos, and meaningful keepsakes, she thoughtfully designs each celebration to reflect the child at its center. It's those intentional details that transform a birthday party into a cherished family memory. Celebrate Forward also offers plushie parties, a fun, interactive experience that's become a favorite for families. Each party includes a stuffed animal of the child's choice, stuffing, a heart insert, a T-shirt to decorate for their new furry friend, and an adoption-style birth certificate. With a wide variety of plush animals to choose from, children can create a keepsake that's uniquely their own. Optional addons, including pet carriers, custom collars, and costumes, make the experience even more memorable. One of the most meaningful parts of her business happens quietly behind the scenes—providing donated party boxes to families in need so every child has the chance to experience the joy of a special celebration; one of Celebrate Forward's most impactful initiatives.
Celebrate Forward brings creativity, thoughtful details, and generosity together to make birthdays truly unforgettable PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI MATULA AND ROCCO MINNITTE
Through donated party boxes, gently used decorations from previous celebrations are collected, refreshed, and thoughtfully repackaged for families facing financial hardship. Decorations that might otherwise be discarded are given new life, reducing waste while spreading joy throughout the community. It's a mission that reflects the heart behind Celebrate Forward: ensuring every child feels loved, valued, and worthy of celebration, regardless of circumstance. For Oakes, the greatest success isn't measured by perfectly coordinated décor or picture-perfect tablescapes. It's found in the smiles of children, the traditions families build together, and the memories they'll carry long after the candles have been blown out. Because every celebration tells a story—and thanks to Celebrate Forward, more children have the chance to know theirs is worth celebrating. instagram.com/celebrateforwardco S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Chinese Tradition Hits the Suburbs How Mahjong is bringing Cypress residents together one tile, one friendship, and one game at a time A game that dates back to nineteenth-century China has recently grown in popularity in the Cypress community. Acting as both an intellectually stimulating pastime and a social outlet, residents are seeking out Mahjong more than ever. Michelle Tinney, a local Mahjong event coordinator and teacher, says the biggest misconception about Mahjong is that “most people believe it’s simply a matching game that can be found on an app.” In reality, it is a complex game with different regional variations as a result of Mahjong spreading worldwide over the years. The game’s growing popularity stems from the welcoming community. Mahjong players create a space for genuine connection by inviting friends, family, and anyone interested in it. Whether playing for leisure or competitively, there is a place for everyone to enjoy the game. American Mahjong is a “four-player game with 152 tiles that each have their own names and complicated rule system guided by a standard annual card,” explains Tinney. In order to win, one has to collect the right pairs and groups of matching tiles before their opponents do. Throughout the game, tiles are passed around and discarded as everyone searches for the right combinations. Players must simultaneously collect discarded tiles for their own matches while blocking others from doing so. Having a sharp memory is crucial for using offensive and defensive strategies to secure needed tiles.

WHERE TO START
From an outsider’s perspective, Mahjong can appear intimidating, leading many to become discouraged before even starting. “It is often referred to as learning a new language,” Tinney notes. Before joining organized events, it is highly recommended for beginners to have a formal lesson to become familiar with the basics. Whether taught by a friend or an American Mahjong instructor, in-person lessons are considered more beneficial to learners instead of online videos. Having one-on-one instruction provides new players the opportunity to ask questions early on and eliminate any confusion. The basic gear beginners need in order to play includes a set of tiles, a mat, a rack, a National Mah Jongg League card, and a pair of dice. Once a player knows the rules and has the proper equipment, they can play almost anywhere.
Michelle Tinney | Cypress Mahjong
Michelle Tinney runs several Mahjong events under her group Cypress Mahjong. Since February of 2025, Tinney has been an avid player and delights in sharing her passion with her community. She holds open games scheduled every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at World of Beer in Towne Lake. Other places to play include the Richard & Meg Weekley Community Center and local Mahjong meetups that can be found through Facebook. While Mahjong originated in China, it has become a beloved game globally that relieves stress, builds community, and strengthens memory. “Like all new experiences, drop your guard and give it a try,” shares Tinney. “I love to see the light bulb moment for a new player when they achieve their first Mahjong. It feels like you have conquered Mount Everest.” cypressmahjong.com

Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 Honeycrisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.

5th Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk – Cypress/Northwest Houston
GAME DAY SAFETY TIPS EVERY TAILGATER SHOULD KNOW Football season means tents in the parking lot and hot links on the grill. It also means open flames, crowded spaces, and distracted cooks. Stay safe and keep the celebration going with these tips: • Set up grills on a flat, stable surface at least three feet from vehicles, tents, and garages. • Let coals cool completely (24 hours is preferred) before disposing of them in a metal container with a lid. • Keep a fully charged fire extinguisher nearby. Early action is key! • Drink water throughout the day. Texas heat doesn’t take a bye week. • Never drink and drive. Line up a designated driver or rideshare before kickoff.
Play it safe out there. If things get too hot, CFFD is here to intercept.

“I put off replacing our roof for as long as I could. I was concerned about how we would be able to afford a new roof as well as the amount of damage ripping off the old roof would do to my cherished garden. After years of research, I knew if we were to replace the roof, we would only go with Telge Roofing. We called Roy and after discussing all the details and financing, we scheduled our new roof build. These guys were so thorough, [adding] a mesh layer 15 feet from the rooftop to the grass to keep my garden beautiful! I almost cried with gratitude. Lupe, our project manager, was amazing, communicating each step and setting expectations. Roy stopped by to make sure everything ran smoothly. We had a beautiful new roof by 4 pm the same day. The next day, we had our 6-inch copper gutters put on. The new roof and gutters made my house look new again! I have never replaced a roof and I spent so many years dreading it. But let me tell you, after this experience, I will only be singing the highest of praises for Telge Roofing! Roy and his daughter made the transaction smooth and easy. Take it from me, a very passionate gardener and proud homeowner, if you want the best, you want Telge Roofing!!’ - Kyle & Kristana Sipila
