Stockton Foundation Inc. has announced their purchase of a 165acre tract of land that will be used for the Harris County Fair and Rodeo. With plans to focus on engaging youth, agricultural education and development, entertainment, and events in a family-friendly environment. Plans also include salvaging a lot of interior elements while they reconstruct the old Tin Hall which was built in the late 1800s in Cypress, TX, and has been closed since 2014.

When people think of purchasing second hand items, auction houses may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, licensed auctioneer Tina Murphy, and owner of Magnolia Gardens Auction House in Hockley, shares the benefits of an auction and how her business has grown over the years. “You’re getting antiques, and you’re getting one of a kind,” she said. “You’re getting
things that you won’t find in a store. That’s the beauty of an auction house.”
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Magnolia Gardens began hosting auctions via Facebook Live. The change from in-house-only auctions has allowed them to reach more buyers and showcase a wider variety of pieces.

On Saturdays, buyers have the option to join online or visit the auction house in person. Tina is a captivating auctioneer; attending her auctions is an unforgettable and fun experience. Saturday auctions provide more high-end pieces, such as antiques, jewelry, rugs, and furniture. “The auction is beautiful because there is such a variety
of merchandise,” Murphy said. “All under one house. All under one roof.”
With the steady increase in retail prices, shopping second hand has recently grown in popularity. Murphy explains that attending an auction gives people an opportunity to purchase quality pieces at reasonable prices. “For someone in their 30s or 40s who are buying homes or just starting out, this is great furniture,” Murphy said. “This is something that I would have in my house, and because I am pretty picky about what comes in, it’s not going to be junky.”
Since Magnolia Gardens collects new merchandise each week, Murphy carefully curates each event to ensure bidders receive a unique experience at every auction, regardless of one’s price range.
Murphy said those who are interested in bidding are welcome to stop by the auction house to view items in person whenever their doors are open. She also posts tutorials and photos of items on Facebook. Bidders must register at least one hour before an auction by calling the auction house, but once registered, Murphy said they are registered for all auctions.
“It doesn’t matter if you spend $25 a week, or you spend $5,000 with me,” Murphy said. “Every single person is important. Every single bid is important. And everybody is treated the same. That $25 bid is just as important as the $5,000 bid.”

“First and foremost, I’m inspired by my wonderful parents who took the leap of faith to move from the Philippines to America for me and my four sisters.” Elita shares. “Daily, I’m inspired by these women I work with. I have a great boss, Wendy Granato who is the General Manager of our station. She’s paved the way for so many of us. She found me in LA at the perfect time, and took a chance on me.” Elita recalls, “She told me, ‘It’s gonna work. There are more little girls who look like you and they need someone like you to represent them.’ I hope I am just as brave as her if I’m ever in the place to make those decisions!”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
“Not to worry so much, and enjoy the journey a little more! I tell the high school and college students whom I mentor the same things, and don’t worry if you don’t get the first job or first internship! There is so much time and more opportunities ahead!”
HOW DO YOU FIND A HEALTHY WORK/LIFE BALANCE?
Elita credits her husband Ryan for the reason she’s been able to pursue her dreams. “He’s the CEO of the family,” Elita shares, “to be at the studio for morning weather and be fresh for the day I have a 12:45 am alarm. I’m at work at 2 am; analyzing and forecasting till the morning news starts at 4 am. Together for 25 years and married for 13, Ryan keeps the stability at home with our twelve-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter.” Elita says, “We are a team, and that’s how we get it done!”
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SENSE OF STYLE?
“Classic and tailored. For TV I stick to solids, nothing distracting when I’m standing next to a map or graphic. I honestly love finding a good deal and choosing clothing to suit my shape and style.”
WHO IS YOUR STYLE INSPIRATION?
“I love women like Ginger Zee, she’s fashion-forward but follows a similar rulebook as I do. Also, Robin Roberts, and Sara Haines–I love the classic simplicity of their looks!”
Wardrobe: “Invest in a good pair of comfortable, stylish shoes! It is worth it!” She still has her first pair of “red-bottomed” pumps in her shoe collection and they’ve lasted year after year. “You can replace or repair the bottoms, but this investment will take you places!” Elita says.
Makeup: Opting against lash extensions, and instead sticking with her long-time staple, Ardell Wispies, Elita recommends pairing simple lashes with a good eye-liner and eye-shadow to achieve her classic look. “For eye-shadow, I like to use a dark brown eye-shadow in the crease with a little sparkle in the inner lid. Just like a wardrobe, keep it simple, classic, nothing distracting.”
Hair: Choose a style to suit your face. “I have a wider face frame, so you’ll always see me with longer hair.” Layers and face-framing highlights are a favorite option too, “Here in Texas you can change your hair color with every season because the weather is always changing. “I love a subtle change in my hair color, along with every season!”

Have you ever pieced together an outfit for a special event or placed a collection of items on a shelf and then stood back and found that the pieces you pulled together totally worked or completely did not work? I used to think that I either needed a whole lot of talent or a bit of luck when it came to styling something beautifully. Turns out, there is no talent or luck about it at all. It all starts with a math formula. This formula is known as The Golden Ratio of 1.618. Discovered in the ancient world by mathematicians, this pattern can be found all over in the world of nature. This ratio creates patterns that can be found on the spines of a pinecone, seeds on a sunflower head, spirals on seashells, even the human form, to name only a few. And our eyes love to see it. Why our eyes like this particular pattern may remain a mystery but how to achieve it is no mystery at all. Fashion designers, interior designers, architects, photographers and artists have all been using this formula for centuries in order to achieve visually appealing compositions. And so can you!
In interior styling, a vignette is a small, curated collection of objects grouped together to create a smaller picture within a larger space in a room. Chances are, at some point you’ve put together a vignette without knowing it was one. What makes the difference between a purposefully styled vignette and a cluttered collection is all in the composition. The composition is most appealing when this amazing Golden Ratio is applied.
To get started on styling a vignette, first decide on the space you’ll place it. It could be an empty shelf, bedside table, or coffee table. Next, collect a few of your very favorite things that could be styled there. These objects could be a few books, a vase with flowers, a candle, a small clock, a plant, a few apples, the list is endless. Now that you have your space and objects to style, it’s time to assemble your vignette.
In grid form, the Golden Ratio shows designers exactly where to place the most important objects in the composition for the greatest visual appeal. Known as Phi, this grid splits the space that you’re working with into thirds vertically and horizontally. Place the most important objects on the correlation grid lines. Even better, place on the points where the lines intersect. This will be more appealing to the eye than if the important objects are in the center of the frame or far to the sides.
How
In number form, the Golden Ratio helps us to know how many items to use when styling a vignette. This form is known as the Fibonacci Sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.). The sequence grows as it adds together the prior two numbers to get a new number (for example, 3+5=8 and 5+8=13, etc) and repeats. Amazingly, all the numbers that you achieve by doing this are the exact same numbers of petals that are found on flowers. How amazing is that! To apply to styling a vignette, choose a number in the Fibonacci Sequence for the number of items you will use to style. Typically 3 or 5 objects work great for small vignettes.
What
The eye loves to see odd numbers. Odd numbers stop our brain from categorizing items into pairs which are less visually interesting. When styling a vignette, build a triangle shape of 3 points with the objects you are styling. To achieve this, vary the heights of objects to make a stepping down effect. If your items are of similar height then use books or a small object to lift one higher so that it appears taller than the others. To start, place the tallest piece in the back, medium piece in front and slightly to the side of the tall piece, then the smallest piece in front to create a stepping down effect. The Golden Triangle has angles of 72 and 36 degrees but any triangle here will do!
