LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor There’s something special about gathering around the table. Whether it’s dinner at a favorite local restaurant, a family recipe passed down through generations or the excitement of discovering a new local spot with friends, food has a way of bringing us together. That’s what makes our annual Food & Drink Issue one of my favorites each year. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the flavors, creativity and people behind the dining experiences that make our community so deliciously unique. You’ll meet Jody Lane, whose love of charcuterie became the foundation for an unexpected new chapter. What began with a collection of 60 boards has grown into Bountiful Boards—a Cypress storefront rooted in creativity, connection and the courage to build something entirely her own. For a taste of wine country without the long drive, Restivo Family Cellars is bringing the experience closer to home. Owners Andy and Jessica Restivo have transformed a passion for winemaking into a Hockley destination rooted in family, community and a desire to showcase just how good Texas wine can be. You’ll also meet Emma Grace Elsner, the artist behind Brushed by EG, who turns life’s special moments into one-of-a-kind works of art. Through colorful, handpainted banners and thoughtful custom creations, she’s helping local families celebrate milestones with personal touches designed to become treasured keepsakes. We’re also taking you behind the hidden doors of Aye Candy, a speakeasy-style lounge where mystery, elevated cocktails and a little glamour make for a memorable night out. And with a new “speakeasy within a speakeasy” opening this fall, there’s even more waiting to be discovered. This month, we invite you to pull up a chair and explore some of the incredible restaurants, dishes and local culinary talent right here in our own backyard. There’s plenty to savor in our Editor's Picks—and perhaps a few new places to add to your must-try list in Cypress! So come hungry, Cypress. This issue is served especially for you.

Candy

COU NTER A hidden speakeasy blending mystery, elevated cocktails, and neighborhood charm

There is something undeniably exciting about discovering a hidden gem, especially one tucked behind an unassuming storefront with a little mystery built into the experience. In an era where travel often feels aspirational, exploring a little closer to home can uncover just as much intrigue, charm and novelty as a getaway. That spirit of discovery is exactly what makes speakeasies so appealing. Originating during the era of Prohibition in the 1920s, speakeasies were hidden establishments where patrons secretly gathered to enjoy alcoholic beverages when the sale of alcohol was outlawed in the United States. Often concealed behind unmarked doors, basements or seemingly ordinary storefronts, these underground bars thrived on secrecy and exclusivity. Guests were sometimes required to know a password or “speak easy,” quietly and discreetly, to gain entry, giving rise to the now-famous name. Today, modern speakeasies recreate that same sense of hidden adventure, though without the legal risk, of course. From concealed entrances to carefully curated ambiance and inventive cocktails, they offer guests more than just a drink—they create an experience. The fun lies in the reveal, the feeling that you have stumbled upon a secret worth sharing. That is exactly the atmosphere awaiting guests at Aye Candy— one of the Greater Houston area’s newest hidden-gem cocktail destinations, tucked discreetly behind a vintage-inspired candy shop façade.

16

H OT SP OT | FO O D + BEVE RAGE

At first glance, visitors might think they’re stepping into a nostalgic sweets store lined with colorful jars of candy, but beyond the playful entrance lies an intimate, upscale cocktail bar designed to feel like an escape from the everyday. Inspired by the hidden cocktail lounges of Mexico City, Aye Candy blends mystery, elegance, and fun into one distinctive nightlife experience. Located at 1849 Bingle Road in Spring Branch, the speakeasy opened in June 2024 and quickly gained attention for bringing a more polished cocktail culture to the area. The concept was created by Cypress locals, the Velasco family, who transformed a longtime family-owned property into a stylish, adults-only lounge. “We wanted to create a sophisticated place where guests could dress up, unwind and enjoy elevated cocktails—something that feels intentionally removed from the ordinary Houston bar scene,” owner Cristia Velasco said. “Aye loosely translates to ‘wow’ in Spanish, and that’s exactly the feeling we want guests to have when they step through the hidden entrance.” Inside, Aye Candy offers a moody, intimate atmosphere with velvet seating, dim lighting, curated music, and an aesthetic built around glamour and escapism. Live music is played on Saturday nights, giving the lounge more energy on weekends while still maintaining an upscale feel. The venue is geared toward adults seeking a stylish spot for date night, a girls’ night out, or an elevated evening with friends, and guests are encouraged to follow a smart-casual dress code to preserve the ambiance.

The centerpiece of the experience is the craft cocktail menu. Signature drinks include the Aye Candy Gin & Tonic, made with butterfly pea syrup and botanicals; the Watermelon High, featuring tequila and fresh watermelon; and the tropical-inspired Cocosol. Beyond cocktails, the lounge also offers wine, charcuterie boards, happy hour specials during the week, and private event packages for birthdays, corporate gatherings, and celebrations. The space can accommodate both semi-private and fullvenue rentals, making it as much an event venue as a nightlife destination. Aye Candy is currently expanding to add Aye Candy Hidden Cellar, a “speakeasy within a speakeasy” set to open this fall, adding another layer of mystery to the experience. Open Tuesday through Saturday evenings, Aye Candy has quickly become known as a stylish, fun escape— equal parts hidden experience, cocktail destination, and conversation-worthy night out. ayecandyhtx.com

One Brushstroke

at a Time

Some of life's most meaningful moments don't come from extravagant gestures—they come from the thoughtful details that make someone feel truly seen. For Emma Grace Elsner, owner and artist behind Brushed by EG, those details begin with a paintbrush. Every banner, gift bag, card, and custom creation is painted entirely by hand, transforming ordinary celebrations into deeply personal memories that families treasure long after the party is over. What started as a creative outlet quickly became something much more. "I realized

there was something really special about creating pieces that became part of some of life's sweetest memories, and I fell in love with being a small part of those moments," Elsner says. That passion shines through in every piece she creates. Rather than relying on printed designs or mass production, Elsner carefully hand-paints each order, ensuring no two creations are exactly alike. Every brushstroke reflects the personality, story, and occasion of the person receiving it. Her signature creations are custom celebration banners, but her creativity doesn't stop there. "My most popular product is custom hand-painted banners for all kinds of celebrations, but I also love thinking outside the box!" she says. "I've hand-painted gift bags, wrapping paper, note cards, and other custom pieces. If it can be painted, I’m usually willing to give it a try!" Whether it's welcoming a new baby, celebrating a birthday, honoring a graduate, or marking another milestone, each project is thoughtfully designed to capture the spirit of the occasion. The result isn't just party décor—it's artwork that many families choose to save as a keepsake after the celebration is over. In an age of quick online orders and generic decorations, Elsner is offering something refreshingly different. Every piece carries the unmistakable character that only hand-painted artwork can provide. Tiny details, vibrant colors, and personalized touches come together to create something that feels authentic because it truly is. For Elsner, the relationships she builds with her clients are just as rewarding as the artwork itself. Learning about the people she's creating for allows her to infuse every design with meaning, ensuring each piece reflects the joy and individuality of the celebration it represents. That commitment to craftsmanship and personal connection has helped Brushed by EG grow through word of mouth, as happy customers return for life's next milestone and enthusiastically recommend her work to friends and family.

As her business continues to flourish, Elsner remains committed to preserving the qualities that made people fall in love with her work in the first place. "Right now, my biggest goal is simply to continue growing while staying true to what makes my business special—the personal, hand-painted touch," she says. It's a philosophy that resonates in every custom order she completes. While trends may change and celebrations evolve, the value of something created by hand— made with care, intention, and artistry—never goes out of style. For families looking to make birthdays, baby showers, weddings, holidays, graduations, or everyday milestones feel even more meaningful, Brushed by EG offers more than beautiful décor. Elsner creates one-of-a-kind keepsakes that become part of a family's story— pieces that celebrate not only the occasion itself but the love, joy, and memories shared within it. Because sometimes, the most unforgettable part of a celebration isn't just the event—it's the thoughtful, hand-painted details that remind us how special the moment truly was. instagram.com/brushed.by.eg

CHEERS to Cypress ROOTS How Andy and Jessica Restivo brought a taste of Hill Country charm to Hockley ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUNNY RAJABI

Tucked just outside Cypress in Hockley, Restivo Family Cellars is proof that a hobby, a little wanderlust, and a lot of heart can turn into something the whole community gets to enjoy. The winery's story starts with homebrewing. Owner Andy Restivo spent nearly a decade brewing beer as a serious hobbyist, winning competitions along the way before his curiosity carried him into winemaking. Everything shifted into focus in 2021, when Andy and his wife and co-owner, Jessica, took a trip to Napa Valley. The couple fell in love with the multi-generational family feel of some of the smaller wineries there, and the trip sparked a desire to do something similar back home in Texas. With deep roots already planted in the Cypress community, the Restivos set their sights closer to home. Rather than making the three-hour drive to Fredericksburg for a Hill Country wine experience, they wanted to bring that same charm and handcrafted quality to their own backyard. They found a property in Hockley, planted a two acre vineyard across 2023 and 2024, and opened the outdoor space to the public in late 2024. "We want to highlight just how good Texas wines are," Andy said. "We are not trying to copy what California or France are doing but focusing on an approach to winemaking that highlights the unique aspects of Texas grapes."

24

M UST SE E | FO O D + BEVE RAGE

That approach shows up in the glass. The winery ferments its red wines at cooler temperatures than a typical California Cabernet, preserving delicate fruit flavors and giving the wines a lighter, fruit-forward balance suited to Texas weather. While the Restivos are slowly incorporating grapes from their own vineyard, they also partner with growers in the Texas High Plains, a panhandle region that supplies roughly 80 percent of the grapes grown in the state and shares a climate similar to Italy's. Varietals like Sangiovese and Dolcetto thrive there, and the Restivos say sourcing from the region is a way to spotlight the work of Texas farmers. Being family owned shapes more than just the wine. "Being completely family owned gives us the ability to really focus on one thing, and that is serving our community," Jessica said. "We are not beholden to outside influences or short term targets." Visitors can feel that community focus from the moment they arrive. The outdoor only venue sits beneath sprawling, century old oak trees overlooking the vineyard, with plenty of room for kids to play. Most Saturdays bring a rotating lineup of food trucks serving everything from pizza to barbecue to Puerto Rican fare, alongside live music about once a month and periodic vendor markets. A tasting flight of four wines is the best way to sample the lineup, with bold reds like Primitivo and Sangiovese popular in winter and crisp whites and sangria favored in the warmer months. The road here hasn't been without its detours. "We did not anticipate just how difficult developing rural property would be," Jessica said. "We still want to get to the same destination; we are just taking a much different path to it." That patience paid off this year with the winery's first full scale harvest, a bountiful 1.5 tons of white grapes and 1.7 tons of red, now fermenting into next year's releases. Looking ahead, the Restivos have five new wines on the horizon, including bold reds, an oak aged white, and their first sparkling wine made from estate grown grapes. They're also developing an indoor space inside a World War II era barn on the property, with plans to show up more often at local farmers markets and community events in the meantime. For Andy and Jessica, it all comes back to the same idea that started this journey in Napa: good wine is best enjoyed with good company, close to home.

Award-Winning Sips Restivo Family Cellars is making its mark on the Texas wine scene, with wines earning impressive recognition at both the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) and Lone Star International Wine Competition. The honors span the winery’s lineup, from crisp whites to bold, Texas-grown reds. Malvasia Bianca earned Bronze at HLSR 2025 and Gold and Best in Show at Lone Star in 2024, while Cuvée Blanc received Gold at both competitions. Dolcetto took Silver at Lone Star, and Sangiovese earned Bronze at HLSR. Primitivo proved a standout at HLSR 2025, taking Gold along with Class Champion and Texas Class Champion honors. Together, the awards offer another reason to raise a glass to Texas wine—and to a local winery helping showcase just what Texas-grown grapes can do.

Wedding Cakes by Tammy proves the sweetest part of saying “I do” can look just as incredible as it tastes

Sweetly Ever After Vanilla and chocolate are classic options for a wedding cake, but with the help of a gourmet cake designer, couples can opt for a flavor with more personality. Cutting into the cake and sharing it with loved ones is a special moment during a wedding. Having a unique taste adds to those shared memories. Flavors like Texas Melon, Butter Grand Marnier, Pineapple Almond Amaretto and Cinnamon Roll are some of local cake artist Tammy Allen’s specialties.

28

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | LOCAL SE RVICE S

In her youth, Allen was surrounded by excellent bakers and cooks who introduced her to food that was full of flavor. By teaching her the value of exceptional food, her friends and family ultimately inspired her to leave corporate America after 20 years and start her own business. It was not until she discovered ways to incorporate her artistic abilities into cake making that Allen knew wedding cake designing would be her next career path. Utilizing her artistic eye, Allen blends “intricate craft techniques, bold textures, custom colors, and personalized details to match a couple’s exact vision.” With her creative expertise, couples do not have to compromise on design. “My vision of providing brides with the best of both worlds—deliciously flavored cakes and exquisite designs—has been a gamechanger,” says Allen. However, Wedding Cakes by Tammy Allen prioritizes quality just as much as visual aesthetics. “We use high-quality ingredients, ensuring rich flavors, exceptional moisture, and taste,” remarks Allen. Unlike corporate wedding cake businesses, she takes a customized approach to each client rather than relying on mass production. Without worrying about a quota, Allen and her team can focus on providing the best they can for customers. Their motto is “a cake should taste just as incredible as it looks.” To begin the order process, “couples experience a personalized appointment designed to align taste preferences with event styling,” says Allen. Each consultation lasts around 45 minutes and includes cake sampling, event logistics, collaborative design, pricing and quote finalization. “Beyond custom cake creation, we offer services including curated private tastings, design consultations, grooms’ cakes, dessert tables, and professional delivery and setup,” adds Allen.

For couples unable to meet for a full consultation, Sweet Cake Boxes are available for purchase and in-person pickup. These are only available for sameday pick up on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and customers must also call at least an hour ahead to provide time for the box to be put together. These boxes include some of Allen's most popular cakes so customers can get a feel for their distinct flavor profiles before committing to an order. Following the at-home tasting, Zoom consultations are then offered to work out the logistics of placing an order and discussing any preferred designs. To accommodate customers who may have questions, anyone can submit inquiries on their official website. Allen’s favorite part of her job is hearing from couples who were able to relax, enjoy their cake and savor the moment knowing every detail had been thoughtfully taken care of. For Allen, making wedding cakes is about more than profit—it’s about creating a memorable experience for couples and adding a little extra sweetness to their special day. weddingcakesbytammyallen.com

BUILDING SOMETHING BOUNTIFUL When Jody Lane found herself stepping into an entirely new chapter three years ago, she wasn’t sure exactly where it would lead—but the answer was sitting around her home. After 25 years of marriage and raising five children, Lane was navigating life independently following a divorce, entering a world where she would have to discover what she was capable of on her own.

FINDING STRENGTH, CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY ALONG THE WAY

Then she looked around at her collection of approximately 60 charcuterie boards. Lane had always loved them. She loved the wood, the different shapes and the character of each piece she collected during her travels. She had casually made charcuterie boards for friends’ showers, parties and celebrations over the years, but never thought of it as a business. Now, those boards gave her somewhere to put all the creativity and energy she was carrying. “It was just sort of like this thing that came to me that could channel all my energy, all the different things that I was creative in, into this one tangible thing,” Lane said. She began researching, experimenting and learning. She took a job at a middle school while building Bountiful Boards on the side, eventually going to school to learn the business skills she needed to turn her growing passion into a career. And along the way, Lane discovered something about herself. “I knew more than I thought I knew,” she said. For someone who had never worked outside the home or managed the financial and business responsibilities of a household, building a company required Lane to learn quickly. She figured out loans, insurance, commercial kitchen requirements and the many moving pieces that come with entrepreneurship.

For three years, Bountiful Boards operated from Lane’s home, growing primarily through word of mouth. Friends brought friends. Customers returned. Orders multiplied. Eventually, Lane decided to take another leap of faith. She secured an SBA loan, moved into a commercial kitchen and, this May, opened the doors to Bountiful Boards’ first storefront in Cypress. Today, the space offers charcuterie boards, grab-and-go lunch boxes, gifts and workshops. But for Lane, the business is about much more than arranging meat and cheese. “I love creating,” she said. Her boards are built visually, with Lane examining her creations for colors, textures and balance. For special events, she incorporates personal touches—photographs, baby toys and other details that make the display specific to the person being celebrated. That creative process has become a way for Lane to reconnect with a part of herself she had always carried. Building Bountiful Boards has also given her the confidence that comes from realizing she can learn, adapt and create something entirely her own. “To go from nothing to managing an entire life and business and loans … it’s so edifying,” she said. But perhaps the most meaningful part of what Lane has built is the community surrounding it. At the storefront, Lane hosts mahjong nights, family nights, craft activities, book swaps and workshops for children, women and couples. “Community is my first love,” she said. “I love bringing people together.” These events offer another way for Lane to channel her love of community, creating opportunities for people to gather, create and connect. In establishing Bountiful Boards, Lane has found more than a business. She has found a new sense of independence, rediscovered her creativity and built a community of her own. “My life is completely unrecognizable today for the better,” Lane said. What began with 60 boards collected from places she had traveled has become something much bigger: a business, a creative outlet and proof that sometimes the most unexpected new chapters can bring you closer to yourself. bountifulboardscharcuterie.com

A Lifetime of Service CY-FAIR FIRE CHIEF AMY RAMON EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR LEADERSHIP, SERVICE AND A CAREER DEDICATED TO HER COMMUNITY

When Amy Ramon joined the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department at just 20 years old, she simply wanted to serve her community. Thirty-six years later, that commitment has earned her one of the fire service’s highest individual honors. Ramon, chief of the Cy-Fair Fire Department, has been named a 2026 International Association of Fire Chiefs Career Fire Chief of the Year. The prestigious national award recognizes exceptional leadership, innovation, integrity and contributions to the fire service throughout a chief’s career. “This recognition belongs to every member of this department who shows up and does the work every day,” Ramon says. “I’m grateful to our commissioners, our Cy-Fair members, our union partners, and this community for the trust they’ve placed in us.” Ramon’s career has evolved alongside the community she serves, rising through the ranks from volunteer firefighter and paramedic to station officer, board member and assistant chief of EMS. Following a national search, the Harris County Emergency Services District No. 9 Board of Commissioners hired her as fire chief in July 2014. Since then, Cy-Fair has experienced extraordinary growth—and so has its fire department. When Ramon became chief, only four of the department’s 13 stations had 24-hour fire suppression coverage. Today, all 13 operate around the clock, staffed by a combination of full-time, part-time and volunteer personnel. The department now serves more than 600,000 residents and responds to approximately 46,000 emergency incidents annually. Plans call for eight additional stations over the next decade to keep pace with the growing community.

“Chief Ramon has led our organization through some of the roughest waters a chief executive will ever have to navigate,” Assistant Chief of Administration Mike Clements wrote in her nomination praising her steady leadership, sound judgment, and clear vision for the future. Ramon brings an unusual breadth of expertise to the position. In addition to being a credentialed Chief Fire Officer and Certified Fire Executive, she is a licensed attorney with a Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law. Her leadership has emphasized not only operational excellence and fiscal responsibility, but also the well-being of the people behind the uniform. Under Ramon, the department implemented a comprehensive mental health program offering counseling and proactive support for firefighters and their families, reaching more than 54 percent utilization among personnel. She has also championed cancer-screening initiatives addressing firefighters’ elevated occupational risks. Despite leading a large and increasingly complex organization, colleagues say Ramon remains remarkably connected to its people. “The Chief’s door is always open,” Clements notes. Ramon makes a point to know members by name and remember details about their families, hobbies and lives. “In an organization our size, this takes intentionality.” Her influence extends throughout Texas. Ramon serves in leadership roles with the Harris County and Texas Fire Chiefs Associations, teaches developing fire service leaders and advocates on issues ranging from firefighter wellness to public safety. In 2024, her peers named her Texas Fire Chief of the Year. Michael Glynn, 11th District Vice President of the International Association of Fire Fighters, praised Ramon’s dedication to improving the fire service, saying that she strives to “leave it better than she found it.” For a career that began with a young volunteer looking for a way to serve, that may be the most fitting recognition of all. cyfairfd.org

SLEEK CREPERIE + CAFE

Made Fresh and Crave-Worthy

If you can eat just one thing at Connie’s Frozen Custard, make it the Cookie Butter Biscoff. A favorite at the Towne Lake location, this decadent treat starts with velvety vanilla custard, made fresh that day, then hand-blended with creamy, spiced cookie butter and crunchy Biscoff cookies. The result is an irresistible mix of buttery caramelized cookie flavor, cool, silky custard and crave-worthy crunch in every spoonful. That signature richness starts with Connie’s custard, made fresh daily in small batches and served directly from the machines for an exceptionally smooth, creamy texture. Each flavor is handblended to order, ensuring every bite tastes freshly made. And for longtime Connie’s fans, the beloved pecans remain a must. Their buttery crunch shines in classics like the Butter Pecan Concrete and Texas Turtle Sundae, two favorites that prove some indulgences never go out of style. There’s some history behind that custard, too. Connie’s roots stretch back to Leon’s, the legendary Milwaukee custard stand that helped shape the tradition beginning in the 1940s. Today, Connie’s still uses Leon’s original recipe, which dates back more than 80 years, along with a Leon’s custard machine built in 1950—a delicious connection to the old-school craftsmanship that started it all. Connie’s opened its Towne Lake location in January, introducing its longtime frozen custard traditions to a new group of fans in Towne Lake and Bridgeland. The shop is already getting involved in its new community, too, hosting “FudgeRaisers”—Connie’s take on school spirit nights—to support local CFISD schools.

A Sweet Spot for Indulgence

If you must pick just one sweet indulgence at Sleek Creperie in Fairfield, make it the Signature Dubai Chocolate Pistachio Crepe, an irresistibly decadent take on the café’s freshly made crepes. Delicate and warm, each crepe is generously filled with luscious Dubai chocolate pistachio cream and silky milk chocolate, then drizzled with rich pistachio sauce. A finishing sprinkle of crushed pistachios adds a satisfying crunch, creating layers of creamy, nutty and chocolatey goodness in every bite. Rich without sacrificing texture, it’s the kind of indulgence made for lingering over—or sharing, if you can bring yourself to. Beyond its signature crepes, Sleek brings together a luxury chocolate shop, coffee bar and artisan creperie under one roof, with handcrafted desserts and globally inspired flavors rounding out the experience. From a morning coffee or leisurely brunch to an afternoon sweet treat, the menu offers plenty of reasons to stop in. The café also regularly introduces new and seasonal creations, experimenting with different flavors and unexpected combinations to give customers something new to discover throughout the year. Sleek began its journey in Houston in 2014, with the Fairfield location opening in 2020 and marking the start of the brand’s franchising journey. Since then, the Fairfield café has become a local breakfast and brunch destination while building connections within the Cypress community through school donations, catering and local events—making it a neighborhood spot that offers a little something for just about every craving. sleekchocolate.com

CREEKWOOD GRILL Good Food, Good Times, Fresh Upgrades

For the bite you’ll still be thinking about after you leave Creekwood Grill, order the Pollo Borracho. This juicy half chicken is injected with beer, dry-marinated in the restaurant’s special rub and smoked low and slow for three to three-and-a-half hours. The result is fall-offthe-bone tender chicken with a beautifully seasoned exterior and loaded with bold, smoky, barbecue flavor. Served with a baked potato or your choice of two sides, it’s hearty, flavor-packed comfort in every bite. here’s even more to look forward to at Creekwood Grill with the addition of Executive Chef Timothy J. Lewis to the culinary team. Most recently serving members at Houston Oaks Country Club, Chef Lewis also brings experience from several of Houston’s higher-end restaurants. He is already putting his touch on the menu, refining longtime favorites and revamping the dessert offerings with a house-made cobbler and cheesecakes now baked in-house. This fall, diners can also look forward to a few tempting new additions, including a hearty pork shank and broiled scallops served over Cajun maque choux, bringing fresh flavors and a few new reasons for longtime guests to revisit the menu. The changes extend beyond the kitchen. Creekwood Grill made several improvements over the summer, including expanding its upstairs private event space, the Saloon, which can now accommodate up to 80 guests—or 120 when using the entire upstairs. The additional space makes it an even more versatile option for celebrations, private parties and larger gatherings. Outdoors, the new Marquee brings a commercial-grade shade structure to the expansive outdoor space, with 100 percent of the picnic tables now covered. Families can settle in more comfortably while enjoying the turf lawn, big-screen LED TV and playground, making the outdoor area an inviting place to enjoy a meal while the kids have room to play. With a refreshed culinary direction, new dishes on the way and expanded spaces designed for gathering, Creekwood Grill continues to build on what has made it a Cypress favorite while giving regulars something new to discover.

SOTO’S CANTINA Where Family Tradition Meets Fresh Flavor

At Soto’s Cantina, Chef Carlos Gomez turns up the flavor with the Steak de Otoño, a beautifully seared 10-ounce skirt steak served over rich, vibrant pipián rojo. Roasted sweet potato and seasonal squash bring a touch of earthy sweetness, while toasted pumpkin seeds add a satisfying crunch and fresh pomegranate provides a bright, juicy finish. Savory, smoky and subtly sweet, each bite delivers layers of flavor in a colorful dish inspired by the warmth of the season. It’s a plate that balances familiar comfort with unexpected flavors, making it an especially tempting choice as fall arrives. Soto’s Cantina is a family-owned, award-winning Mexican restaurant known for fresh, flavorful dishes rooted in generations of family recipes. Whether guests stop in for a weeknight dinner, gather over margaritas and fajitas or celebrate a milestone with family and friends, the emphasis remains on good food and genuine hospitality. There’s even more reason to celebrate at Soto’s Cantina! The family-owned restaurant recently received the prestigious “Sello M” distinction, an honor promoted by Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Mexican Academy of Gastronomy. The recognition celebrates the quality of Soto’s culinary offerings and its contribution to promoting Mexican gastronomy throughout the Houston community—a meaningful honor for the Soto family, who have spent years sharing authentic family recipes, Mexican flavors and warm hospitality with their guests. The newest honor gives Soto’s plenty to toast, and fortunately, they know a thing or two about celebrating. Consider this your invitation to experience what earned Soto’s Cantina the recognition: come hungry, bring your favorite people and leave plenty of room for a margarita—or two. sotoscantina.com CONTINUED >

LOCAL TA B L E A Place to Gather, A Menu to Love

When you’re craving something memorable, Local Table’s Baked Goat Cheese deserves a spot at the table. From Executive Chef Sue Nowamooz, this dish brings together creamy, sweet and spicy flavors in one warm, shareable dish. A blend of cheeses, with creamy goat cheese taking center stage, is seasoned with spices and a touch of cayenne, then baked until warm, melty and perfect for spreading. Dried apricots and crushed red pepper finish the dish, adding natural sweetness, texture and a gentle kick of heat that balances the richness of the cheese. Served alongside freshly toasted baguette slices from a local bread vendor, the crisp edges and soft interior offer the perfect contrast to the creamy cheese. Each bite delivers a satisfying combination of rich, tangy cheese, subtle heat, sweet apricot and toasted crunch, making this flavorful appetizer a Local Table favorite. The Baked Goat Cheese fits right in with Local Table’s approach to dining: familiar, approachable food with fresh ingredients and thoughtful touches that make each dish feel a little special. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Local Table has grown from its first location in 2016 to six Houston-area restaurants, each reflecting the character of its neighborhood while staying true to the brand’s welcoming spirit. The concept continues to evolve while maintaining its commitment to fresh ingredients, inviting flavors and creating a place where guests feel at home. At the Cypress location, that means an easygoing atmosphere and a wide-ranging menu with something for just about everyone at the table. Shareable starters and fresh salads lead into sandwiches, wraps and hearty entrées, making Local Table equally suited for a casual lunch, weeknight dinner or leisurely meal with friends and family. Whether you’re gathering around the table for dinner or simply stopping in for a bite, the Baked Goat Cheese is a flavorful place to begin—just be prepared to negotiate over that last baguette slice. eatatlocaltable.com/locations/cypress

R+ R CRAFTHOUSE Where Big Flavor Meets Good Times

There is plenty to tempt you at R+R Crafthouse, but the Cajun Club Po’ Boy takes the classic club sandwich and gives it an irresistible Louisiana twist. It starts with a warm, toasted New Orleans-style po’ boy from Gambino’s Bakery, piled high with savory ham, turkey and tender roast beef, then layered with melty provolone, American and Swiss cheeses. Crisp lettuce and zesty jalapeño mayo add the perfect bite, while a generous pour of rich, house-made beef gravy soaks into the bread, bringing every savory layer together. Hearty, messy and deliciously over-the-top in all the right ways, it’s a two-handed feast served with a pile of crispy, hand-cut fries. The Cajun Club Po’ Boy fits right in with R+R Crafthouse’s approach to comfort food—familiar favorites served with plenty of personality and a few unexpected twists. The menu is built for those moments when you’re craving something hearty and satisfying, whether that means settling in over a casual dinner, meeting friends for drinks or sharing a meal with the family. Generous portions and bold flavors are part of the appeal, with a neighborhood atmosphere that keeps the experience relaxed and approachable. And soon, there will be another place to enjoy it. This Cypress favorite is expanding to Katy, with its second location anticipated to open this November at 6845 Peek Road. The new restaurant will bring R+R’s signature neighborhood hospitality along with a mix of longtime favorites and exciting new menu items, giving regulars plenty they’ll recognize while adding a few fresh reasons to make the trip. The Katy location will also introduce weekend brunch, adding a new way to experience R+R. And for anyone who saves room for dessert, there’s another surprise in the works: a new creation currently being tested that may just give the beloved Jeanne’s White Chocolate Bread Pudding some serious competition. crafthousegrill.com CONTINUED >

“I put off replacing our roof for as long as I could. I was concerned about how we would be able to afford a new roof as well as the amount of damage ripping off the old roof would do to my cherished garden. After years of research, I knew if we were to replace the roof, we would only go with Telge Roofing. We called Roy and after discussing all the details and financing, we scheduled our new roof build. These guys were so thorough, [adding] a mesh layer 15 feet from the rooftop to the grass to keep my garden beautiful! I almost cried with gratitude. Lupe, our project manager, was amazing, communicating each step and setting expectations. Roy stopped by to make sure everything ran smoothly. We had a beautiful new roof by 4 pm the same day. The next day, we had our 6-inch copper gutters put on. The new roof and gutters made my house look new again! I have never replaced a roof and I spent so many years dreading it. But let me tell you, after this experience, I will only be singing the highest of praises for Telge Roofing! Roy and his daughter made the transaction smooth and easy. Take it from me, a very passionate gardener and proud homeowner, if you want the best, you want Telge Roofing!!’ - Kyle & Kristana Sipila
