HOUSTON METHODIST LEADING CARE WHERE

Letter from the Editor

August has a way of reminding us what matters most. Before schedules fill with school drop-offs, sports practices, and packed calendars, there is still time for muddy paws, backyard adventures, neighborhood bike rides, and the simple joy of being together.

This month, we celebrate two of life's greatest sources of unconditional love and endless entertainment: kids and pets. They keep us laughing, teach us patience, inspire us to slow down, and remind us to see the world through curious eyes. Whether they have two legs or four, they have a remarkable way of bringing families and communities together.

Learn how Lightbridge Academy owner Arturo Neto is working to shape the next generation through a family-centered approach by creating a child care center built on partnership, community, and a commitment to putting children and families first.

You'll also meet pet photographer Jill Garrett, whose animal portraits preserve more than a moment—they celebrate the special bond between people and the animals they love.

We also shine a light on All Ears! Center, a remarkable nonprofit helping children who are deaf or hard of hearing find their voice through life-changing technology, early intervention, and unwavering support for families across Southeast Texas.

Our feature on 2026 Cy-Ranch grad Seana Burris celebrates a young woman who refuses to let others define her limits. Seana is inspiring her community and making an extraordinary impact.

Get to know the four-legged officers and dedicated handlers of the Cy-Fair ISD Police Department whose unique bond, rigorous training, and unwavering commitment make them invaluable members of local law enforcement—and true heroes in our community. You'll get an inside look at the important work these teams do every day. We even sat down with the K9s of Courage—Zeke, Marley, Rita, Koa and Loki—for a special interview, offering a fun glimpse into the personalities behind the badges!

At the heart of every story in this issue is a simple reminder: the relationships we build—with our children, our pets, our neighbors, and our community—are what make Cypress such a special place to call home.

One more thing before you turn the page. For the first time ever, we’re putting something special in your hands. We are thrilled to announce the first-ever Cypress Lifestyle Readers’ Choice Awards! Nominate the businesses and local favorites that make Cypress home. Nominations are open now through August 31. Head to our social media to nominate your faves and help celebrate the very best of Cypress!

WHERE LEARNING TAKES ROOT

LOCALLY OWNED LIGHTBRIDGE ACADEMY IS CHANGING WHAT CHILD CARE LOOKS LIKE IN CYPRESS, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME

When Arturo Neto and his family moved to Cypress, he encountered the same challenge facing so many parents in this fast-growing pocket of northwest Houston: finding child care that felt like genuine partnership rather than just a place to drop off your kids. After years of watching what was available in communities like Towne Lake, Bridgeland, and Copperfield, and noticing a gap between what families needed and what most programs offered, he decided to do something about it.

Lightbridge Academy Owner, Arturo Neto

Lightbridge Academy of Cypress, located at 8742 Barker Cypress Road, is led by owner Arturo Neto and Center Director Suzanne Ellen Jacobs. The academy serves children from infancy through pre-kindergarten, and it is built around a philosophy Neto takes seriously in every aspect of how the center runs.

That philosophy is called the Circle of Care, and it frames child development as a shared responsibility among owners, staff, parents, and the surrounding community. "It recognizes that a child's success depends on strong partnerships between families, teachers, caregivers, and the broader community," Neto says.

In practice, that means open communication with parents, teachers who take time to understand each child's personality and developmental needs, and a genuine effort to show up beyond the classroom walls. Neto says he noticed early on that many area preschools had limited community presence, understandable given how demanding it is to run a center and keep classrooms staffed and focused. But he made visibility a priority.

"Hopefully, our neighbors are seeing us, meeting us, meeting our center administrators, and getting to know our incredible teachers," he says.

The Circle of Care also plays out in quieter, unexpected ways. Neto recalls a staff member who encouraged and offered feedback to a parent who was launching their own business. "We became a sounding board, the guinea pigs, if you will," he says. It was outside the typical scope of a child care center, but it reflects exactly the kind of family-centered culture he set out to build.

For working parents, peace of mind is built into the daily structure. Families are greeted by familiar faces who know their child by

name. A secure facility and consistent routines help children settle in. Throughout the day, parents can check in via ParentView cameras and receive updates through the academy's communication platform.

"They can watch all day if they'd like," Neto says. And when parents return the next morning with stories about something their child did at home that they learned at school, he says that is the most rewarding feedback his team can receive.

The curriculum spans every stage of early childhood, and rather than anchoring to a single educational framework, Lightbridge Academy draws on five distinct learning methodologies. "Every child learns differently," Neto says. "Our teachers are trained on how to apply what works best for each child, not to try to fit a child's learning into a rigid structure."

That approach shows up in outcomes: 95 percent of Lightbridge Academy graduates are assessed as kindergarten-ready by the time they reach elementary school. But Neto is equally focused on what cannot be measured on an assessment. He wants children to leave believing that questions are encouraged, that challenges are opportunities, and that learning is genuinely exciting.

What sets this location apart from a corporate franchise is simple: Neto and his family live here. His daughter graduated from Rennell Elementary, attends Anthony Middle School, and will head to Cy-Ranch in a few years. "We're not simply operating a business," he says. "We're building relationships with families and helping shape the next generation of Cypress children. Every decision we make is guided by one simple question: Is this what's best for the children and families we serve?"

Jill Garrett captures the heart, humor and soul of the animals we love most Photography by:

A LIFE IN FOCUS

For Jill Garrett, pet photography has never been about teaching animals to pose. It's about allowing them to be exactly who they are. Based in nearby Brenham, Garrett has spent more than three decades studying animal behavior, a passion that has shaped both her life and her work behind the camera. Her ability to understand animals on their terms allows her to capture the fleeting expressions, quirks and moments that pet owners recognize instantly— the head tilt, the mischievous grin, the soulful gaze that makes a beloved companion unforgettable. "I photograph pets the way their people already see them," Garrett says. "All the silliness, the soul, and the small unrepeatable moments that make animals impossible not to love."

Her journey into photography began with a childhood love of animals. As a young girl, Garrett dreamed of becoming a large-animal veterinarian. Over time, however, she realized photography offered another way to preserve the creatures she adored. "There's so much loss and mistreatment in the world," she says. "I wanted to make them live forever instead through photography."

She began photographing horses at shows and creating equine portraits before eventually shifting her focus to pets. The change came after Chloe, her beloved Staffordshire Bull Terrier, entered her life. Chloe became Garrett's muse, patiently sitting beneath studio lights while she refined her craft. More importantly, Chloe taught her how to connect with animals in a way that translates through every image she creates.

Chloe lived to the remarkable age of 17 before passing away this spring. Her influence remains woven into Garrett's work and inspired her ongoing involvement with animal advocacy. Today, Garrett serves as a board member of HeARTs Speak, a national organization that connects artists with animal rescues and shelters to help increase pet adoptions and awareness.

The key to successful pet photography, Garrett says, is simple: meet animals where they are. "Animals can feel your emotions and energy," she explains. "You have to learn how to speak their language, not yours." Consent is a cornerstone of her work. Props, costumes and accessories are always optional. "If the dog says no, then no it is," Garrett says.

That philosophy guides every session. Rather than forcing a pet into uncomfortable poses, Garrett focuses on building trust. She allows animals to settle into their environment and reveal their personalities naturally. Whether a dog prefers to sit, stand, play or simply observe, she adapts her approach accordingly.

This patience often leads to the images owners treasure most— authentic portraits that feel less like photographs and more like memories frozen in time.

Today, Garrett shares her home with four dogs and a cat, drawing daily inspiration from the animals that sparked her passion decades ago. Through every session, she hopes to create more than a beautiful portrait. She hopes to create a lasting reminder of a bond that never truly fades.

Because for Garrett, the best pet photographs don't simply document a pet's life—they allow that life to live on forever.

THE SOUND ofHOPE

All Ears! Center offers affordable, life-changing care for families of children with hearing loss

When a child is born deaf or hard of hearing, finding the right resources to support their growth and development is often an overwhelming and challenging journey for parents.

According to the World Health Organization, 95.1 million children between the ages of five and nine years old live with hearing loss worldwide. A local non-profit organization, All Ears! Center, has made it their mission to make a difference in the lives of children who are deaf through early diagnosis, advanced technology, and family-centered care without the financial burden.

“The most important thing we want families to know is this: a hearing loss diagnosis is not the end of your child's story—it's the beginning of a journey filled with hope and possibility,” said Lee Rech, Executive Director of All Ears! Center.

Hearing loss can affect a child’s growth in spoken language, social interaction, literacy, and brain development. However, early intervention and new hearing technology has allowed providers to transform the outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. In 2022, All Ears! Center implemented a diagnostic pediatric audiology service to its specialized Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) program to accommodate the growing number of newborns and children needing an early diagnosis.

“With the right support, children can develop spoken language, succeed in school, thrive, and pursue their dreams,” Rech said.

According to the All Ears! Center website, hearing children acquire 90% of the words they know by overhearing conversations in their environment. The organization’s LSL program allows children with

hearing loss to have the same access to those “overheard” conversations through evidence-based educational strategies that support optimal listening and spoken language and literacy development.

“The goal was to fill a critical gap for families by creating a place where children who are deaf or hard of hearing could receive comprehensive, family-focused early intervention and family support as they journey toward school readiness, literacy, and lifelong independence,” Rech said.

The organization partners with families and encourages them to actively participate throughout their child’s treatment plan. Their audiology and family services specialists assist parents as their children navigate mainstream classrooms and learn alongside their hearing friends, Rech explains.

“Families receive education, coaching, and practical strategies they can use at home to help their child develop listening and spoken language skills in everyday situations,” she said. “Our team works collaboratively to ensure each child receives coordinated, family-centered care.”

Since every child’s journey is unique, Rech said appointments are personalized based on the patient’s age and needs. All Ears! pediatric services include comprehensive hearing evaluations, diagnostic testing, hearing aid fittings and programming, cochlear implant services, LSL therapy, and monitoring to ensure hearing technology meets the child’s needs.

Hearing loss treatments for infants and children can cost up to thousands of dollars. All Ears! Center aims to remove

financial barriers by providing more affordable care for families to ensure that their children receive hearing services during the pivotal years of brain and language development.

“Early intervention is essential for language development, yet many families face delays due to insurance challenges, financial barriers, or limited access to specialized care,” Rech said.

The organization funds their pediatric mission through their services for adult patients. A full-service audiology clinic serves patients of all ages, providing hearing evaluations, hearing aids, cochlear implant programming, bone-conduction devices, tinnitus management, and assistive hearing technology.

“Every adult hearing evaluation or hearing aid fitting helps support a child on their journey to hearing, speaking, reading, and thriving,” Rech said.

Based in The Woodlands, All Ears! Center serves families across 40 counties and 234 zip codes throughout Southeast Texas. The organization provides care to more than 3,000 patients, including 1,400 children from birth to age five and 300 infants and toddlers from birth to age three.

The All Ears! team also hold a variety of community and fundraising events to support their mission. The annual Sporting Clays Tournament is one of their major fundraisers that brings together businesses, community leaders, and outdoor enthusiasts to support children with hearing loss.

“Our purpose is simple and powerful: Every child deserves the opportunity to hear, communicate, learn, and reach their full potential, regardless of a family's financial circumstances,” Rech said.

Making Waves

A trailblazing athlete, dedicated volunteer and aspiring teacher inspires others to dream bigger

“I want people to focus on what I can do. Not what they think I can’t,” says Seana Burris, a recent high school graduate from Cypress Ranch High School. Throughout Burris’s life, having Down syndrome has impacted how others perceive her ability to accomplish things compared to her peers. “I know what I’m capable of. I believe I can do anything I set my mind to. It might take me longer sometimes, but that doesn’t mean I can’t get there.”

At eight years old, Burris began making waves with Special Olympics and later joined the summer swim team with her friends, where her love for swimming flourished. When the time came to try out for the Cy-Ranch swim team, Burris had already spent years training to qualify. In sixth grade, her mother, Shannon Burris, reached out to the coach and gathered information on the team’s expectations. Using this knowledge, in the 2022 swim tryouts during Seana’s freshman year, she landed a spot on the team thanks to her dedication. Burris made history as she became the first student-athlete with Down syndrome to make the Cy-Ranch swim team. “I was really proud of myself.

I knew it meant something bigger than just me,” says Burris.

After joining the team, she began to train year-round. When balancing her high school and Special Olympics swim meets proved challenging, Burris’s work ethic prevailed as she continued to show up for long early morning practices and never gave up. Her hard work paid off when she was selected in June of 2025 to represent Team Texas in swimming at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis. Burris competed at Games this past June, where she earned a bronze medal in the 50-meter breaststroke, a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke, and another silver medal in the 100-meter individual medley (IM), an event in which swimmers compete using all four strokes in a single race.

LIFE OUT OF WATER

Despite the success Burris has had with swimming, she notes that her biggest struggle in life has nothing to do with the sport at all. People often see her diagnosis instead of who she is as a person, especially throughout her time in school. “Once I had a diagnosis, people wanted to

put me in a box. They decided what they thought I could do before I had the chance to show them.”

However, this never stopped Burris from being a positive, active member of the Cypress community. For more than ten years, Seana has volunteered with Sky High for Kids and currently serves on the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Junior Rodeo Committee. During her time in high school, she also served as a member of the Rowdies, Cy-Ranch’s spirit team, where she helped people feel welcome and unified students through school pride.

Her love for giving back is what inspired her career goal of becoming a teacher who helps special needs students. “I want to inspire them. I want them to know they can chase their dreams too,” remarked Burris. She hopes to receive an education for this through the Aggie ACHIEVE program at Texas A&M University. "Seana has continually proven that determination and opportunity matter far more than limitations,” added her mother. “Her story is one of perseverance, inclusion, and the power of believing in possibilities.”

My favorite part of the job is to find illegal contraband and get rewarded with my Kong and knowing that I’m making the schools and community safer.

A message from Officer Olivares: One thing I would like to let the readers know is the time and effort Loki and I put into training to assure that the students, staff, and community are safe.

Officer P. Hindman

Officer Paul Hindman began his law enforcement career in 1992 as a Deputy Constable in Corpus Christi. Throughout his career, he has worked in drug interdiction, corrections, and patrol operations with several agencies. Officer Victor Magallanes.

My favorite part of the job is seeing the kids smile while I’m walking the hallways. I love meeting students and helping them feel safe every day.

They work long hours, train continuously, and are always ready when called upon. Being a successful K-9 team takes commitment from both the handler and the dog. It is truly a partnership built on trust, loyalty, and teamwork. These dogs give their all without hesitation, and they become much more than working partners. They become family. K-9s like Marley are a true example of why dogs are known as man’s best friend.

PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT PORTRAITS

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.

• Trim trees and bushes so branches don’t take down power lines or damage your roof.

• Stock a three-day supply of food, water, flashlights, batteries, and medications.

• Keep important documents like insurance policies, medical records, and financial paperwork in a waterproof bag.

• Build a “go bag” you can grab in 15 minutes if evacuation is necessary.

• Learn how to safely operate a generator: always outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows and doors.

“I put off replacing our roof for as long as I could. I was concerned about how we would be able to afford a new roof as well as the amount of damage ripping off the old roof would do to my cherished garden. After years of research, I knew if we were to replace the roof, we would only go with Telge Roofing. We called Roy and after discussing all the details and financing, we scheduled our new roof build. These guys were so thorough, [adding] a mesh layer 15 feet from the rooftop to the grass to keep my garden beautiful! I almost cried with gratitude. Lupe, our project manager, was amazing, communicating each step and setting expectations. Roy stopped by to make sure everything ran smoothly. We had a beautiful new roof by 4 pm the same day. The next day, we had our 6-inch copper gutters put on. The new roof and gutters made my house look new again! I have never replaced a roof and I spent so many years dreading it. But let me tell you, after this experience, I will only be singing the highest of praises for Telge Roofing! Roy and his daughter made the transaction smooth and easy. Take it from me, a very passionate gardener and proud homeowner, if you want the best, you want Telge Roofing!!’
