Owners Edgar Gonzales and Christie Going have enjoyed traveling together, cooking, and great conversations sideby-side for a decade. By day, she’s knee-deep in the world of Graphic Design, but she trades her design hat for an apron by night. Randi’s artistic journey started as early as she could hold a pencil, later garnering awards for drawings in high school and eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design.

Cy-Woods graduate and Lone Star College Cy-Fair alumnus Jordan Lane has always had a passion for music. Now, he is living his dream as the vocalist and guitarist of up-and-coming rock band Lucid Illusions. Lane has played instruments from a young age. In high school, he sang in the Cy-Woods choir as well as played in other bands. He said he is inspired by his grandmother who was also a successful musician. “I have always played music and I feel like it’s just my turn to do it,” Lane said. Lucid Illusions includes two other band members, drummer Donovan Hanson and bassist Conner Graham. their fathers developed a friendship. Lane said his dad used to listen to and call-in traffic reports to a radio station where Hanson’s dad was the host. When they discovered both of their sons were musicians, they set up a meeting between Hanson and Lane. “I found them in the weirdest way, and we just started making music together and it took off,” Lane said. Often described as “blues-punk,” the band has opened for national acts such as Bush, Papa Roach, Seether, Saliva, and Warrant, among others. They have also played at renowned venues and festivals, including Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, South by Southwest in Austin, and Buzzfest at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The band released their first fulllength album in 2019. Lane recounts recording their second album “Something New” in a makeshift studio in Hanson’s house during the height of COVID-19. However, they eventually had the chance to finish recording at a studio in Nashville before the album was released in December 2022. Recently named Best Local Band by the Houston Chronicle in 2022 and 2023, Lucid Illusions has received various kinds of local recognition. In addition to performing at several local venues and events, their single “Move Along” has played on Houston’s 94.5 The Buzz, a radio station Lane often listened to growing up. “I remember listening to The Buzz in the car and I would go to Buzzfest whenever I was younger,” he said. “To not only be able to play it but also have my music sung on the radio is crazy.”

The band keeps itself busy with at least two gigs or more each month, along with receiving more opportunities to perform outside of Houston. Most recently, the band performed at a New Year’s celebration at BFE Rock Club in Houston and at 602 Brewing Company in Bastrop. “I wouldn’t say that it truly means that we’re the best, but I also like to think that it means that we’re doing something right,” Lane said. While the music industry is often competitive and unpredictable, Lane said the band aims to continue working hard to get noticed by the right people. “At the end of the day, we just want to be able to pay the bills, make music and love what we do,” he said. It’s a plain and simple fact, some things are just meant to work together, and the recent collaboration between country star Parker McCollum and Lucchese boots is certainly a winner. Both quintessentially Texan, their beginnings over 100 years apart, the range of “Parker's Picks” has evolved from his long-time admiration for Lucchese bootmakers. McCollum, who has amassed around 50 pairs of cowboy boots to date, has his own select line of favorites. You can “shop his look” on the Lucchese website for a style which is comfortable yet tough, with more artistry than you can shake a stick at, and McCollum wears them from the stage to the ranch, and everywhere in between!

“I STARTED HAVING FUN DESIGNING BOOTS AND HAD A COUPLE OF CRAZY REQUESTS AT FIRST TO SEE WHAT THEY’D PULL OFF.” - PARKER MCCOLLUM The Lucchese story began in 1868 when Salvatore Lucchese disembarked from a ship in Galveston on which he had sailed from Sicily. Utilizing skills he had learned from his shoemaker father, he opened his first boot making business in San Antonio in 1883. Originally making boots for the cavalry, the military and later cowboy boots. Today’s boots have retained many of the original cuts and styles which make them a design classic, using an organic method the boots are handcrafted and created by accomplished artisans, who pass their skills down through the family of employees. These boots are a work of art and pass through 180 – 200 hands from start to finish.

McCollum has worked with Lucchese to create custom boots of his own, “I started having fun designing boots and had a couple of crazy requests at first to see what they’d pull off. I wanted blue king crocodile and they said, “Let’s do it!”, they’re awesome boots and I wear them all the time”. McCollum’s custom boots all have his signature embroidered on the pull tab, one of Lucchese’s many unique finishing touches. The McCollum/Lucchese collaboration brings together parallel core principles and practices, McCollum explains “Nothing’s rushed or forced, it all happens very organically – they’re extremely authentic, extremely genuine, their custom handmade boots which have been made the same way

for over one hundred years, they’re really aware of their brand and what they stand for, that’s really important for me, that’s how I run my career”. Lucchese uses an extensive range of exotic skins “the final coloration would be based on a series of dyes, burnishing and finishing of the boots to get that final color, so they’re all a little bit different” Doug Hogue, VP of brand and product for Lucchese tells me. “There is an interesting secondary market for Lucchese boots, in particular boots that were made in San Antonio in our original location”. McCollum says, “They look even better the more you wear them”, the quality materials and exquisite workmanship make these boots timeless. Lucchese are now being worn by entire bridal parties at weddings, creating the perfect heirloom to be passed down through generations. There are four Lucchese stores in the Houston area, “We like to meet our clients and our customers where they are” explains Angela Hahn, director of retail stores for Lucchese, “a lot of that involves events like The National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, The Houston Rodeo and different events that pop up like Round Top”. 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. Dark Chocolate Truffles what you need 1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting

what you do 1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate.
